How Knowledge, Evidence, Methodological, and Contextual Gaps Differ
There Is No Universal Taxonomy of Research Gaps
Before comparing the four terms, it is important to recognize a limitation in the terminology itself. Research-gap categories are not governed by a single universal taxonomy.
A scoping review published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology examined methods used to identify, prioritize, and display gaps in health research. It found numerous definitions and organized them broadly around missing, inadequate, and insufficient information. The definitions reported in that review included knowledge, evidence, methodological, empirical, population, and other types of gaps.
Other authors have proposed taxonomies containing different categories or have used the same terms somewhat differently. For example, one commonly cited seven-gap taxonomy distinguishes evidence, knowledge, practical-knowledge, methodological, empirical, theoretical, and population gaps.
That means you should not assume that every textbook, supervisor, discipline, or journal uses “evidence gap” or “knowledge gap” in precisely the same way. Use definitions appropriate to your field and, more importantly, describe the underlying limitation clearly enough that the argument remains understandable even without the label.
What Is a Knowledge Gap?
A knowledge gap describes something relevant that is not adequately known or understood. In one taxonomy reported in the literature, the knowledge or “knowledge void” gap is described as a situation in which the desired research findings do not exist. The scoping review of research-gap methods likewise identified this formulation among the definitions used in the literature.
In practice, the term can be used somewhat more broadly to describe an unresolved question in what a field understands. Perhaps an important relationship has not been investigated, a mechanism remains unexplained, or researchers do not know whether a proposed phenomenon occurs under specified conditions.

A Knowledge Gap
Researchers understand several short-term consequences of a newly introduced work practice, but its long-term effects on employee skill development have not been established. The unresolved knowledge concerns what happens to skill development over longer periods.
The important feature is not the phrase “no studies.” It is the unresolved knowledge. You should still verify that the apparent absence is real before claiming that the desired findings do not exist.
What Is an Evidence Gap?
An evidence gap concerns the evidence available to support an answer or conclusion. Depending on the framework, the term may refer to missing evidence, contradictory evidence, inadequate evidence, or insufficiently robust evidence.
This variation is important. Some taxonomies use “evidence gap” specifically for situations in which findings contradict one another. The seven-gap taxonomy, for example, describes an evidence gap in terms of results that support conclusions individually but conflict when considered together.
Other evidence-synthesis literature uses research or evidence gaps more broadly. The scoping review found definitions encompassing missing evidence as well as evidence bases that inadequately address key questions or provide insufficient information.
More recent proposed frameworks likewise use “evidence gap” to describe a lack of sufficiently robust or high-quality evidence for decisions or interventions.

An Evidence Gap
Eight studies have examined whether an intervention improves a particular outcome. Several suggest improvement, others find little difference, and the estimates are imprecise. The topic has clearly been studied, but the body of evidence may still be inadequate for a confident conclusion.
This illustrates why an evidence gap does not necessarily mean an empty literature. The weakness may lie in the strength, consistency, precision, quality, or relevance of the evidence that exists.
What Is a Methodological Gap?
A methodological gap exists when the methods used in previous research leave an important question inadequately addressed and a different or improved methodological approach could generate information needed to resolve that limitation.
The research-gap literature has described this type of gap as a situation in which variation in research methods is required to produce new insights or avoid distorted findings.
For example, suppose nearly all research on an important relationship is cross-sectional. If the research question concerns how one variable changes before another over time, cross-sectional evidence may be unable to answer that temporal question adequately. A longitudinal design could address a specific limitation of the existing evidence.
Watch Out
Using a method that previous researchers have not used does not automatically establish a methodological gap. You need to explain what the existing methods prevent researchers from knowing and why the proposed method is better suited to resolving that uncertainty.
What Is a Contextual Gap?
A contextual gap is best understood as an uncertainty about whether existing findings, explanations, or evidence adequately apply in a materially different context.
“Contextual gap” is not included as a distinct category in every major research-gap taxonomy. Related concepts are sometimes classified instead as population, geographical, spatial, temporal, or applicability gaps. The scoping review, for example, reports a population gap for populations inadequately represented in existing evidence, while other research uses spatial or contextual terminology for missing evidence in particular geographical settings.
The label therefore matters less than the reasoning. A context becomes a meaningful research gap when characteristics of that context create legitimate uncertainty about whether existing findings apply.

A Contextual Gap
An intervention has been evaluated extensively in well-resourced urban hospitals, but a researcher wants to know whether it can work in rural facilities with substantially different staffing, infrastructure, and access to specialist services. Those differences provide a substantive reason to question whether the existing evidence transfers directly.
By contrast, simply saying that “no study has been conducted in City X” does not establish a meaningful contextual gap. The researcher must explain why City X or its relevant population, institutions, conditions, or environment could plausibly change the answer.
The Four Types Can Be Compared by Asking What Is Wrong With the Current Evidence

Knowledge Gaps and Evidence Gaps Often Overlap
The boundary between a knowledge gap and an evidence gap can be especially difficult to draw.
If reliable evidence about a question is missing, then researchers may lack knowledge about the answer. The same underlying limitation can therefore be described from two perspectives: what is unknown and why it remains unknown.
Knowledge perspective
We do not adequately know whether X is true.
Evidence perspective
We lack adequate evidence to determine whether X is true.
Those statements may describe the same research problem. The distinction becomes useful when it improves precision, not when it forces an artificial separation between concepts.
A Methodological Gap Can Produce an Evidence Gap
Gap types can also have causal relationships.
Suppose every previous study of a question uses a measurement instrument with poor validity for the construct being investigated. That is a methodological limitation. Because the measurements are questionable, the resulting body of evidence may also be inadequate. The methodological gap therefore contributes to an evidence gap, which in turn leaves uncertainty in knowledge.
Methodological limitation Previous studies cannot measure the phenomenon adequately.
Evidence consequence The resulting evidence is not strong enough to support a reliable conclusion.
Knowledge consequence An important question remains unresolved.
This is one reason rigidly assigning every study to exactly one gap category can be misleading.
A Contextual Gap Can Also Be an Evidence Gap
Suppose strong evidence establishes an intervention's effect in one setting but little relevant evidence exists for a substantially different setting. From one perspective, this is contextual uncertainty: we do not know whether the findings transfer. From another, it is an evidence gap for the second context.
Again, both descriptions may be defensible. The more important task is to identify what feature of the context makes transfer uncertain and what new evidence would resolve that uncertainty.
Not Every Difference Deserves to Be Called a Gap
Taxonomies can tempt researchers to search for a label first and justification second. For example:
- No qualitative study exists, so there must be a methodological gap.
- No study exists in my country, so there must be a contextual gap.
- Researchers disagree slightly, so there must be an evidence gap.
- No paper uses exactly my combination of variables, so there must be a knowledge gap.
None of these conclusions follows automatically.
A genuine research gap requires a consequential limitation in what existing research can establish. The category should describe that limitation, not create it.
Do Not Confuse a Gap Type With a Study Design
A methodological gap does not mean your study must use mixed methods. A contextual gap does not mean you must conduct a case study. An evidence gap does not dictate an experiment, and a knowledge gap does not automatically require exploratory qualitative research.
First identify the unresolved question. Then determine what evidence is needed to answer it and choose a design capable of producing that evidence.
The research gap helps explain why additional knowledge is needed. The research design explains how your study intends to obtain relevant evidence.
