Knowledge, evidence, methodological, and contextual gaps describe different ways existing research can fall short. Learn what each term means, where they overlap, and how to identify the gap your study actually addresses.

01 · The Question

What Is the Difference Between These Types of Research Gaps?

You review the literature and find that something is missing. But what kind of research gap have you found?

You may encounter labels such as knowledge gap, evidence gap, methodological gap, and contextual gap. These labels can help describe why the existing literature cannot adequately answer a question, but their meanings are not standardized across all disciplines or research-gap frameworks. Some classifications overlap substantially, and the same limitation can reasonably fit more than one category.

The useful question is therefore not simply which label sounds correct. It is what, specifically, the existing research cannot establish and why.

02 · The Short Answer

The Four Research Gaps Differ in What Is Missing or Inadequate

In Brief

A knowledge gap concerns something important that remains unknown; an evidence gap concerns missing, insufficient, inconsistent, or inadequate evidence for a conclusion; a methodological gap arises when limitations in existing methods prevent an important question from being answered adequately; and a contextual gap concerns uncertainty about whether existing knowledge applies in a materially different population, setting, place, or other context.

These categories are useful analytical labels rather than universally standardized boxes. Definitions vary among research traditions, and gaps can overlap: a methodological limitation can produce weak evidence, while a contextual limitation can leave both an evidence gap and a knowledge gap.

03 · What You Need to Know

How Knowledge, Evidence, Methodological, and Contextual Gaps Differ

There Is No Universal Taxonomy of Research Gaps

Before comparing the four terms, it is important to recognize a limitation in the terminology itself. Research-gap categories are not governed by a single universal taxonomy.

A scoping review published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology examined methods used to identify, prioritize, and display gaps in health research. It found numerous definitions and organized them broadly around missing, inadequate, and insufficient information. The definitions reported in that review included knowledge, evidence, methodological, empirical, population, and other types of gaps.

Other authors have proposed taxonomies containing different categories or have used the same terms somewhat differently. For example, one commonly cited seven-gap taxonomy distinguishes evidence, knowledge, practical-knowledge, methodological, empirical, theoretical, and population gaps.

That means you should not assume that every textbook, supervisor, discipline, or journal uses “evidence gap” or “knowledge gap” in precisely the same way. Use definitions appropriate to your field and, more importantly, describe the underlying limitation clearly enough that the argument remains understandable even without the label.

What Is a Knowledge Gap?

A knowledge gap describes something relevant that is not adequately known or understood. In one taxonomy reported in the literature, the knowledge or “knowledge void” gap is described as a situation in which the desired research findings do not exist. The scoping review of research-gap methods likewise identified this formulation among the definitions used in the literature.

In practice, the term can be used somewhat more broadly to describe an unresolved question in what a field understands. Perhaps an important relationship has not been investigated, a mechanism remains unexplained, or researchers do not know whether a proposed phenomenon occurs under specified conditions.

Hypothetical Example

A Knowledge Gap

Researchers understand several short-term consequences of a newly introduced work practice, but its long-term effects on employee skill development have not been established. The unresolved knowledge concerns what happens to skill development over longer periods.

The important feature is not the phrase “no studies.” It is the unresolved knowledge. You should still verify that the apparent absence is real before claiming that the desired findings do not exist.

What Is an Evidence Gap?

An evidence gap concerns the evidence available to support an answer or conclusion. Depending on the framework, the term may refer to missing evidence, contradictory evidence, inadequate evidence, or insufficiently robust evidence.

This variation is important. Some taxonomies use “evidence gap” specifically for situations in which findings contradict one another. The seven-gap taxonomy, for example, describes an evidence gap in terms of results that support conclusions individually but conflict when considered together.

Other evidence-synthesis literature uses research or evidence gaps more broadly. The scoping review found definitions encompassing missing evidence as well as evidence bases that inadequately address key questions or provide insufficient information.

More recent proposed frameworks likewise use “evidence gap” to describe a lack of sufficiently robust or high-quality evidence for decisions or interventions.

Hypothetical Example

An Evidence Gap

Eight studies have examined whether an intervention improves a particular outcome. Several suggest improvement, others find little difference, and the estimates are imprecise. The topic has clearly been studied, but the body of evidence may still be inadequate for a confident conclusion.

This illustrates why an evidence gap does not necessarily mean an empty literature. The weakness may lie in the strength, consistency, precision, quality, or relevance of the evidence that exists.

What Is a Methodological Gap?

A methodological gap exists when the methods used in previous research leave an important question inadequately addressed and a different or improved methodological approach could generate information needed to resolve that limitation.

The research-gap literature has described this type of gap as a situation in which variation in research methods is required to produce new insights or avoid distorted findings.

For example, suppose nearly all research on an important relationship is cross-sectional. If the research question concerns how one variable changes before another over time, cross-sectional evidence may be unable to answer that temporal question adequately. A longitudinal design could address a specific limitation of the existing evidence.

Watch Out

Using a method that previous researchers have not used does not automatically establish a methodological gap. You need to explain what the existing methods prevent researchers from knowing and why the proposed method is better suited to resolving that uncertainty.

What Is a Contextual Gap?

A contextual gap is best understood as an uncertainty about whether existing findings, explanations, or evidence adequately apply in a materially different context.

“Contextual gap” is not included as a distinct category in every major research-gap taxonomy. Related concepts are sometimes classified instead as population, geographical, spatial, temporal, or applicability gaps. The scoping review, for example, reports a population gap for populations inadequately represented in existing evidence, while other research uses spatial or contextual terminology for missing evidence in particular geographical settings.

The label therefore matters less than the reasoning. A context becomes a meaningful research gap when characteristics of that context create legitimate uncertainty about whether existing findings apply.

Hypothetical Example

A Contextual Gap

An intervention has been evaluated extensively in well-resourced urban hospitals, but a researcher wants to know whether it can work in rural facilities with substantially different staffing, infrastructure, and access to specialist services. Those differences provide a substantive reason to question whether the existing evidence transfers directly.

By contrast, simply saying that “no study has been conducted in City X” does not establish a meaningful contextual gap. The researcher must explain why City X or its relevant population, institutions, conditions, or environment could plausibly change the answer.

The Four Types Can Be Compared by Asking What Is Wrong With the Current Evidence

Evidence gap What conclusion can the available evidence not adequately support? Evidence is missing, weak, insufficient, imprecise, inconsistent, or otherwise inadequate
Methodological gap What can existing methods not adequately determine? Design, measurement, data, or analytical approaches limit what can be concluded
Contextual gap Where or for whom might existing knowledge not adequately apply? Material differences in population, setting, place, time, institutions, or conditions limit applicability

Knowledge Gaps and Evidence Gaps Often Overlap

The boundary between a knowledge gap and an evidence gap can be especially difficult to draw.

If reliable evidence about a question is missing, then researchers may lack knowledge about the answer. The same underlying limitation can therefore be described from two perspectives: what is unknown and why it remains unknown.

Knowledge perspective We do not adequately know whether X is true.
Evidence perspective We lack adequate evidence to determine whether X is true.

Those statements may describe the same research problem. The distinction becomes useful when it improves precision, not when it forces an artificial separation between concepts.

A Methodological Gap Can Produce an Evidence Gap

Gap types can also have causal relationships.

Suppose every previous study of a question uses a measurement instrument with poor validity for the construct being investigated. That is a methodological limitation. Because the measurements are questionable, the resulting body of evidence may also be inadequate. The methodological gap therefore contributes to an evidence gap, which in turn leaves uncertainty in knowledge.

Methodological limitation Previous studies cannot measure the phenomenon adequately.
Evidence consequence The resulting evidence is not strong enough to support a reliable conclusion.
Knowledge consequence An important question remains unresolved.

This is one reason rigidly assigning every study to exactly one gap category can be misleading.

A Contextual Gap Can Also Be an Evidence Gap

Suppose strong evidence establishes an intervention's effect in one setting but little relevant evidence exists for a substantially different setting. From one perspective, this is contextual uncertainty: we do not know whether the findings transfer. From another, it is an evidence gap for the second context.

Again, both descriptions may be defensible. The more important task is to identify what feature of the context makes transfer uncertain and what new evidence would resolve that uncertainty.

Not Every Difference Deserves to Be Called a Gap

Taxonomies can tempt researchers to search for a label first and justification second. For example:

  • No qualitative study exists, so there must be a methodological gap.
  • No study exists in my country, so there must be a contextual gap.
  • Researchers disagree slightly, so there must be an evidence gap.
  • No paper uses exactly my combination of variables, so there must be a knowledge gap.

None of these conclusions follows automatically.

A genuine research gap requires a consequential limitation in what existing research can establish. The category should describe that limitation, not create it.

Do Not Confuse a Gap Type With a Study Design

A methodological gap does not mean your study must use mixed methods. A contextual gap does not mean you must conduct a case study. An evidence gap does not dictate an experiment, and a knowledge gap does not automatically require exploratory qualitative research.

First identify the unresolved question. Then determine what evidence is needed to answer it and choose a design capable of producing that evidence.

The research gap helps explain why additional knowledge is needed. The research design explains how your study intends to obtain relevant evidence.

04 · A Practical Example

One Topic Can Contain Several Different Research Gaps

Hypothetical Example

Remote Work and Early-Career Employee Development

Imagine that researchers have published numerous studies about remote work, but you are interested specifically in its relationship with professional development among employees at the beginning of their careers.

Possible knowledge gap Researchers have not adequately established how sustained remote work affects the development of informal professional networks among early-career employees.
Possible evidence gap Several studies examine professional development outcomes, but the findings are inconsistent and the available evidence does not support a clear conclusion.
Possible methodological gap Most studies rely on one-time self-report surveys, making it difficult to examine how professional networks develop or deteriorate over time.
Possible contextual gap Most evidence comes from large technology companies, while little is known about whether the same patterns apply in organizations where remote-work infrastructure and mentoring practices differ substantially.

These are not four interchangeable ways to make the same study sound novel. Each points to a different limitation and potentially a different research question.

A longitudinal study might directly address the methodological limitation. A study in a materially different organizational setting might investigate contextual applicability. A synthesis of existing studies could help clarify an apparent evidence gap. The appropriate response depends on what the literature actually shows.

Common Mistakes When Classifying Research Gaps

Misconception

Every Research Gap Fits Neatly Into One Category

Gap categories overlap. A methodological weakness can create inadequate evidence, which can leave an important knowledge gap. A contextual limitation can simultaneously mean that evidence is missing for a particular population. Choose labels that clarify the reasoning rather than pretending the categories are mutually exclusive.

Misconception

A Knowledge Gap Means Absolutely No Research Exists

Some taxonomies do define a knowledge-void gap in terms of desired findings not existing. But terminology varies, and researchers may use “knowledge gap” more broadly for an important unresolved area of understanding. State what is unknown instead of relying on the label alone.

Misconception

An Evidence Gap Simply Means There Are Few Studies

The number of studies is not enough to characterize an evidence base. Evidence can remain inadequate because studies are weak, imprecise, inconsistent, biased, or poorly suited to the question. Conversely, a small number of rigorous studies may sometimes provide useful evidence.

Misconception

Using a Different Method Automatically Fills a Methodological Gap

Novelty of method is not sufficient. A methodological gap requires an explanation of why existing approaches leave a consequential question unresolved and how the proposed approach improves the evidence.

Misconception

A Different Country Automatically Creates a Contextual Gap

A new geographical location matters when contextual differences plausibly affect the phenomenon, mechanism, intervention, measurement, or applicability of existing findings. Otherwise, the study may simply reproduce existing work somewhere else. Whether a different country creates a research gap therefore depends on substantive reasoning, not geography alone.

Misconception

You Need an Impressive-Sounding Gap Label

A precise explanation is more valuable than specialized terminology. “Previous studies were cross-sectional, so they cannot establish how the outcome changes over time” tells the reader more than simply announcing “a methodological gap exists.”

06 · What This Means for You

How to Identify Which Type of Research Gap You Have

Start with the unresolved research question, not the taxonomy. Describe what the literature already establishes and then identify exactly why it cannot provide the answer you need.

A simple decision framework

If the needed understanding or finding is genuinely absent
You may be dealing primarily with a knowledge gap.
If studies exist but the body of evidence cannot support a sufficiently reliable conclusion
An evidence gap may be the most useful description.
If the uncertainty persists because existing designs, measurements, data, or analytical approaches are inadequate
You may have a methodological gap contributing to the unresolved question.
If strong evidence exists elsewhere but important differences make its applicability uncertain
A contextual gap, population gap, or related applicability gap may be the most precise description, depending on the terminology used in your field.
If several descriptions apply
Explain their relationship rather than forcing the study into a single category.

Then ask a second question: does the gap matter? Classification does not establish importance. A perfectly identifiable methodological or contextual gap can still be trivial.

Before designing a study, determine whether resolving the gap would make a worthwhile contribution.

Classify Your Research Gap Without Forcing the Label

Before naming your research gap, check:
State the exact question or conclusion that remains unresolved.
Establish what the existing literature already tells you before describing what it lacks.
If you claim a knowledge gap, identify precisely what remains unknown or insufficiently understood.
If you claim an evidence gap, explain why the existing evidence cannot support an adequate conclusion.
If you claim a methodological gap, identify the limitation of existing methods and what information a better approach could provide.
If you claim a contextual gap, explain why the new population, setting, place, time, or conditions could plausibly change the answer.
Check whether the terminology you are using has a specific definition in your discipline, institution, or methodological framework.
Allow overlapping gap types when they describe different parts of the same underlying limitation.
Verify that the gap still exists in recent literature before building the study around it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Types of Research Gaps

Is a knowledge gap the same as an evidence gap?

Not necessarily, although the terms overlap and are sometimes used broadly. A useful distinction is that a knowledge gap describes what remains unknown, while an evidence gap describes a limitation in the evidence needed to support a conclusion. Missing evidence can therefore produce a knowledge gap.

Can one study address more than one type of research gap?

Yes. For example, inadequate methods may have produced weak evidence, leaving an important question unresolved. A better-designed study could therefore address a methodological limitation while strengthening the evidence and reducing a knowledge gap.

Is a population gap the same as a contextual gap?

They can overlap, but the terms are not universally defined. A population gap specifically concerns underrepresented or insufficiently studied populations in some taxonomies. “Contextual gap” can be used more broadly for uncertainty involving populations, geographical settings, institutions, time periods, or other materially different conditions.

Does using qualitative research after quantitative studies create a methodological gap?

Not automatically. The qualitative approach should address something the previous methods could not adequately establish, such as processes, experiences, meanings, or mechanisms relevant to the research question. Simply using a different method does not prove that a methodological gap exists.

Are conflicting findings a knowledge gap or an evidence gap?

They can be described from either perspective depending on the framework. Some taxonomies explicitly classify contradictory findings as an evidence gap. The disagreement can also leave a knowledge question unresolved. Explain the inconsistency and its consequence rather than relying entirely on the category name.

Is studying an under-researched population a contextual gap?

Potentially. The case is strongest when there is a substantive reason existing findings may not apply adequately to that population. Simply identifying a group absent from previous samples does not establish that studying it will materially improve knowledge.

Which type of research gap is best?

None is inherently better. The appropriate gap is the one supported by the literature and relevant to an important unresolved question. A consequential evidence gap may matter more than a completely unexplored topic, while a methodological or contextual gap may be important only when it changes what can reasonably be concluded.

These categories overlap and are not standardized across all research traditions. Use them to make your reasoning clearer, not to manufacture novelty. First establish what the literature cannot adequately tell you and why; then choose the gap label that most accurately describes that limitation.
