Methodology Sits Between the Research Question and the Work of Doing Research
Methodology Is the Logic of Inquiry, Not Merely a List of Procedures
Research methodology concerns the rationale and overall approach through which a researcher investigates a problem. It addresses why the inquiry is structured in a particular way and how that structure allows the researcher to answer the research question.
This is broader than describing what happens during data collection.
Suppose a researcher writes: “The methodology consisted of an online questionnaire distributed to 300 students.” We know something useful about the procedure, but important questions remain unanswered. Why was a questionnaire appropriate? What exactly was being measured? Why should those measurements provide relevant evidence? What population or claims are being considered? How will the resulting evidence be analyzed and interpreted?
A methodological account connects these decisions rather than simply cataloguing them.
Methods Are the Specific Things You Do
The distinction between methodology and methods becomes clearer when they are compared directly.

The examples require some caution because methodological terminology varies. Case study, for example, may be described as a methodology, strategy, approach, or design depending on the author. Researchers should use terminology consistently with the methodological literature on which their study relies.
Research Design and Methodology Also Overlap
The distinction becomes more complicated when research design enters the discussion. Research design generally concerns the plan or structure through which a study addresses its research questions, but authors differ in how broadly they define it.
Some frameworks use research design as an umbrella connecting philosophical assumptions, strategies of inquiry, and methods. Others distinguish methodology as the rationale for inquiry from design as the more specific arrangement of procedures needed to implement it.
There is therefore little value in policing terminology without regard to disciplinary context. The more important requirement is conceptual clarity. Readers should be able to tell what philosophical assumptions inform the study, what methodological approach is being used, how the design implements that approach, and which specific methods produce and analyze the evidence.
Research Philosophy Provides Part of the Rationale Behind Methodology
Research philosophy concerns assumptions underlying inquiry. These may include assumptions about reality, knowledge, values, and what constitutes appropriate investigation.
Methodology translates such assumptions, together with the research question and theoretical commitments, into an approach to inquiry.
If a study seeks to estimate a causal effect under controlled or carefully modeled conditions, its methodology must provide a defensible basis for making that inference. If a study seeks to understand how participants interpret a lived experience, its methodology must provide a defensible basis for developing knowledge from participants' accounts and the researcher's analysis. If a study seeks to explain how underlying mechanisms generate events in particular contexts, yet another methodological logic may be needed.
The methods matter, but the methodology explains why those methods can do the intellectual work required of them.
Ontology and Epistemology Can Inform Methodological Reasoning
The philosophical connection is often explained through ontology and epistemology.
Ontology concerns what exists and the nature of the phenomenon being investigated. Epistemology concerns what can be known about that phenomenon and how knowledge claims can be justified. Methodology then addresses how inquiry should proceed given the research question and relevant assumptions.

This sequence is a useful reasoning device, not a compulsory chronological workflow. Researchers often move back and forth among these decisions as their understanding develops.
The broader relationship among ontology, epistemology, axiology, and methodology is therefore best understood through coherence rather than a rigid hierarchy.
Philosophy Informs Methodology Without Functioning as a Lookup Table
A persistent misconception is that research design can be solved through philosophical matching:
Positivism means quantitative research. Interpretivism means qualitative research. Pragmatism means mixed methods. Therefore, once the philosophy is chosen, the methodology has supposedly been decided.
That is too simplistic.
Broad associations certainly exist. Particular philosophical traditions have historically developed alongside particular forms of inquiry. But methods and methodological strategies can be used within more than one philosophical configuration, and philosophical positions themselves contain important variations.
A researcher might use interviews within an interpretive study, a critical realist investigation, a mixed-methods design, a program evaluation, or another methodological configuration. What changes is not merely the interview questions. The status of the evidence, purpose of the inquiry, analytical logic, and claims made from those interviews may differ.
Watch Out
Do not select a philosophy solely because it appears in the same row as your preferred method in a research-methods table. The philosophical position, methodology, methods, and intended claims need to form a defensible relationship rather than a convenient label match.
The Research Question Also Constrains the Methodology
Philosophy is not the only consideration. Methodological decisions also need to answer the research question.
A question about prevalence requires evidence capable of estimating how common something is in a defined population. A question about causal effects requires a design capable of supporting causal inference under appropriate assumptions. A question about lived experience requires evidence capable of illuminating that experience. A question about how a process unfolds over time may require longitudinal or process-oriented evidence.
This is why philosophical assumptions and research questions interact. Neither should be considered in isolation when developing methodology.
Methodological Labels Are Not Enough
Writing “this study uses phenomenology,” “this research adopts a case study,” or “a quantitative methodology was employed” does not automatically justify the design.
A methodological label should lead to an explanation. Why is this approach appropriate for the question? What assumptions does it make? How are participants, cases, variables, or phenomena conceptualized? What evidence is required? How will analysis proceed? What standards will be used to evaluate the findings?
The need for this explanation becomes especially important with methodologies that have multiple variants. Grounded theory, phenomenology, case study research, action research, mixed methods, and other approaches have been conceptualized differently by different scholars. Naming the family does not tell readers which version you are using.
Methodology Helps Establish the Boundaries of Your Claims
A good methodology does more than explain how evidence will be obtained. It also helps establish what the resulting evidence can and cannot support.
A cross-sectional survey may identify associations but, without additional assumptions and design features, cannot automatically establish causal relationships. An in-depth case study may produce rich contextual understanding without supporting statistical generalization to a population. An experiment may estimate an effect under specified conditions without explaining every mechanism through which participants experienced the intervention.
These are not necessarily weaknesses. Every methodology enables some forms of inference while constraining others.
Methodological rigor therefore includes knowing the limits of your design rather than treating methodological sophistication as permission to make stronger claims.
Practical Constraints Matter, but They Do Not Replace Methodological Reasoning
Real research occurs under constraints. Researchers have limited time, access, funding, equipment, sample availability, and institutional permissions. These conditions legitimately influence design.
But feasibility does not turn an unsuitable method into an appropriate one. If the evidence you can realistically collect cannot answer the question, the defensible response may be to narrow or revise the question rather than pretend that the available method is sufficient.
This is one reason methodology often develops iteratively. Questions, assumptions, evidence, and practical possibilities need to be reconciled until the resulting study is both feasible and intellectually defensible.

Hypothetical Example
Investigating Why Students Stop Using an Online Learning Platform
Imagine a researcher noticing that many students begin using a university learning platform but later stop engaging with it. “Why do students stop using the platform?” sounds like one question, but different interpretations of why can lead to different methodologies.
Possible question A Which measurable factors predict whether a student stops using the platform?
Methodological logic
Define relevant predictors and outcomes, gather appropriate observations, and use an analytical design capable of estimating their relationships while addressing relevant alternative explanations.
Possible methods
Platform records, student characteristics, questionnaires, and appropriate statistical modeling.
Possible question B
How do students explain their decisions to stop using the platform?
Methodological logic
Develop a contextual understanding of students' experiences, interpretations, expectations, and decisions.
Possible methods
In-depth interviews followed by an analytical approach consistent with the selected qualitative methodology.
The same broad problem has produced two different forms of inquiry. The difference cannot be explained simply by saying that one uses numbers and the other uses words. The questions seek different knowledge, and the methodology must justify how each form of evidence can provide that knowledge.
That is the connection between research philosophy and methodology in practice: assumptions about what can be known help shape the logic through which evidence is produced and claims are justified.
