Can Research Philosophy Actually Change the Question You Ask?
Researchers often learn a sequence that appears straightforward: choose a topic, formulate a research question, and then select a methodology. Research philosophy may appear much later, perhaps as a subsection of the methodology chapter.
That sequence can make philosophy look like something added after the research question has already been decided. Yet the way a question is formulated already reflects assumptions about the phenomenon and the kind of knowledge the researcher wants.
Asking whether an intervention causes an improvement, how participants experience the intervention, why its effects differ across contexts, or how the intervention reproduces inequalities does more than change the wording. Each question foregrounds different aspects of reality and seeks a different kind of answer.
Philosophical assumptions can therefore influence research questions, although the relationship is usually more iterative than a simple rule in which philosophy comes first and mechanically generates the question.

The Wording of a Research Question Reveals What Kind of Knowledge You Seek
A Research Topic Does Not Determine a Research Question
Consider the topic “generative AI in higher education.” It identifies an area of interest but says almost nothing about what the researcher actually wants to know.
From that topic, researchers could ask:
- Does access to generative AI affect students' writing performance?
- What factors predict students' adoption of generative AI?
- How do students experience using generative AI while writing?
- How do students construct boundaries between legitimate assistance and academic misconduct?
- Why does the same AI intervention produce different outcomes across educational contexts?
- How do institutional AI policies affect students with different levels of technological access?
These questions concern the same broad topic but conceptualize the problem differently. They seek effects, predictors, experiences, meanings, explanations, or consequences involving power and inequality.
The shift from topic to question therefore requires more than narrowing the subject. It involves deciding what kind of knowledge is worth pursuing.
Ontology Can Influence What the Question Treats as Real
Ontology concerns what exists and the nature of the phenomenon being investigated. Research questions can contain ontological assumptions because their wording presupposes that certain entities, properties, experiences, relationships, or mechanisms are meaningful objects of inquiry.
Consider a question asking, “What is the relationship between student engagement and academic performance?” The question treats engagement and academic performance as concepts that can be defined sufficiently to investigate a relationship between them.
Now compare it with, “How do first-year students construct meanings of academic engagement during their transition to university?” Here, engagement is approached partly through meaning-making and context.
The questions do not simply require different methods. They conceptualize what is being investigated differently.
Epistemology Can Influence What Kind of Answer the Question Seeks
Epistemology concerns what can be known and how knowledge claims can be justified. This becomes visible in the kind of answer a research question demands.
Questions asking “how much,” “how often,” “to what extent,” or “what is the relationship” commonly seek knowledge that can be represented through measurement or systematic comparison, although wording alone never establishes a complete epistemological position.
Questions asking “how do participants experience,” “what meanings do participants attribute,” or “how is a phenomenon understood” seek a different form of knowledge, often requiring interpretive attention to participants' perspectives and contexts.
Questions asking “what mechanisms explain” may require reasoning about processes or structures that are not reducible to observed correlations alone.
The important point is not that particular question words belong permanently to particular philosophies. It is that the form of the question reflects what the researcher believes a useful answer could look like.
Axiology Can Influence Which Questions Researchers Consider Worth Asking
Research questions also reflect priorities. Researchers, institutions, funders, communities, and disciplines make decisions about which problems deserve attention and which outcomes matter.
Axiology directs attention to these value dimensions.
Suppose a university introduces automated proctoring. One study asks whether the technology reduces detected examination misconduct. Another asks whether it affects students' privacy, anxiety, or sense of surveillance. A third examines whether facial recognition errors affect demographic groups differently.
None of these questions is automatically superior. Each foregrounds particular consequences. Choosing among them partly involves judgments about what matters enough to investigate.
Axiology does not mean the desired answer should determine the findings. It means values can influence the questions researchers decide are worth asking.
Different Philosophical Orientations Can Direct Attention to Different Problems
Research worldviews provide broad orientations toward inquiry, although their classification varies across methodological literature.
A postpositivist-oriented inquiry might emphasize empirical testing of explanations, measurement, relationships, or effects while recognizing the provisional and fallible character of knowledge.
A constructivist-oriented inquiry might focus on how people develop meanings through experience and social interaction, leading toward questions about interpretations and context.
A transformative inquiry may foreground power, inequality, marginalization, participation, or social change.
A pragmatic inquiry may begin with a practical problem and ask what knowledge would be useful for addressing it, potentially drawing on multiple forms of inquiry.
These are broad tendencies, not question-generating formulas. A researcher cannot identify a complete philosophical worldview from one interrogative phrase.

The table illustrates why research philosophy matters before methodology is selected. The questions themselves already imply different conceptions of the problem and different evidentiary requirements.
Question Words Do Not Determine Philosophy
Students are sometimes given formulas suggesting that “what” questions are qualitative, “does” questions are quantitative, or “how” questions indicate interpretivism. Such shortcuts can be useful for elementary question construction but are unreliable as philosophical classifications.
“How much does the intervention reduce error?” is clearly different from “How do participants experience the intervention?” despite both beginning with how.
Likewise, “What proportion of students use generative AI?” and “What does responsible AI use mean to students?” both begin with what but seek different forms of knowledge.
Watch Out
Do not identify a research philosophy from the first word of a research question. Examine what the question conceptualizes, what kind of knowledge it seeks, what evidence would answer it, and what claims the researcher intends to make.
A Philosophical Position Should Not Be Chosen Merely to Justify a Prewritten Question
Another common sequence is to write a question, choose methods, and then search for a philosophical position that appears compatible with both. This can turn philosophy into retrospective decoration.
A more defensible process is iterative. As you clarify the phenomenon and what you want to know, you may discover assumptions that need examination. Engaging with philosophical and methodological literature can then expose ambiguities in the question.
Perhaps you have asked whether a phenomenon “causes” an outcome without a design capable of causal inference. Perhaps you have asked about “experience” but intend to use only administrative records. Perhaps your question assumes a construct is universally defined when the literature shows substantial contextual variation.
Philosophical reflection can therefore improve the question rather than merely provide terminology for defending it.
The Research Question and Methodology Need to Develop in Conversation
Methodology provides the broader logic through which a research question is investigated. A good question therefore needs to be answerable through a defensible methodology.
This can require revision in both directions. A philosophical or methodological commitment may reveal that a question is framed inappropriately. Conversely, a compelling research problem may lead researchers to reconsider whether their initial philosophical assumptions are adequate.
The relationship is better understood as iterative alignment than as a one-way sequence.
Philosophical Coherence Does Not Mean Every Question Has Only One Correct Philosophy
A question does not usually carry a hidden label identifying the one worldview permitted to investigate it.
Researchers from different traditions can sometimes investigate similar questions while differing in how they conceptualize constructs, produce evidence, analyze observations, or interpret findings. Conversely, subtle changes in the wording of a question can signal substantial changes in what kind of knowledge is being sought.
The relevant test is whether the assumptions, question, methodology, evidence, and interpretation form a defensible whole.

Starting With the Topic of Student Use of Generative AI
Imagine a researcher beginning with a broad interest in university students' use of generative AI. The researcher has not yet selected a methodology. Different assumptions and purposes can transform that topic into very different questions.
If the concern is prevalence What proportion of students use generative AI for particular academic tasks?
If the concern is prediction
Which student and course characteristics are associated with frequent generative AI use?
If the concern is experience
How do students experience using generative AI while completing academic work?
If the concern is meaning
How do students distinguish legitimate AI assistance from academic misconduct?
If the concern is inequality
How do differences in access to paid AI tools shape students' opportunities to use generative AI for academic work?
If the concern is practical improvement
What combination of institutional guidance and AI-literacy support helps students use generative AI responsibly and effectively?
The researcher has not merely rewritten the same question six times. Each version defines the problem differently and requires different evidence to answer it.
This is where philosophical assumptions become practical. They help researchers notice that formulating a research question is already an intellectual decision about what kind of phenomenon matters and what kind of knowledge would constitute a useful answer.
