If Nobody Has Studied the Topic in Your City, Is That Enough?
You search the literature and find studies from several countries, perhaps even several cities in your own country. None, however, comes from the city where you plan to conduct your research.
The gap seems easy to state: "No previous study has investigated this issue in City X."
That may establish that the city is missing from the published evidence. It does not automatically establish that knowledge is missing.
Cities can differ in meaningful ways. Population composition, infrastructure, environmental conditions, local government, transport, housing, health services, schools, economic conditions, technology access, regulations, and cultural practices can all affect research phenomena. But a different city name is not itself an explanation for why another study is needed.
03 · What You Need to Know
When a City Becomes More Than Just a New Pin on the Map
Geographic novelty is easy to create
If a phenomenon can be studied in thousands of cities, then thousands of locations may technically remain "unstudied." Treating each unstudied location as an automatic research gap would create an almost unlimited supply of gaps without establishing that each new study contributes useful knowledge.
Local absence
No relevant study has been identified in the particular city.
Local evidence gap
Existing research does not adequately answer an important question for the city because relevant local conditions or decision needs create consequential uncertainty.
A defensible local study moves from the first statement to the second.
Ask what is different about the city that matters to the question
Every city is unique in some sense. Research justification requires a narrower argument: which differences could plausibly affect the phenomenon being studied?
If the research concerns commuting behavior, transport networks and urban form may matter. If it concerns air pollution, industrial activity, traffic, geography, and weather patterns may be relevant. If it concerns digital learning, connectivity, school resources, household access, and educational policy may matter more than municipal boundaries.
The contextual feature should be linked to the research question through a plausible mechanism rather than added as a generic statement that "every locality has a unique context."
Nearby cities are not automatically the best comparison
Researchers sometimes search only neighboring cities and conclude that their own locality is underrepresented. But physical proximity does not guarantee substantive comparability.
A nearby city may differ sharply in population density, income distribution, infrastructure, governance, industry, educational systems, or access to services. A more distant city may be much more comparable on the characteristics that influence the phenomenon.
This is why you should examine whether an apparent geographic gap disappears when comparable settings are considered .
Local evidence may be needed for local decisions
Some questions require local information even when the general phenomenon is well understood.
A city government deciding where to allocate public-health resources may need local prevalence estimates. Urban planners may require local mobility data. Schools may need information about barriers experienced by families in particular communities. Environmental decisions may depend on local exposure measurements.
Evidence from another city can inform expectations but cannot necessarily provide the local parameter needed for the decision.
In these cases, the study may be justified by a local evidence need rather than by a claim that the general phenomenon is unknown.
Descriptive local research can be useful without pretending to discover a universal phenomenon
Researchers sometimes worry that describing a local situation sounds less scholarly than claiming a broad gap. That can encourage inflated novelty statements.
Yet well-designed descriptive research can be highly useful when accurate local estimates are themselves important. The key is to match the claim to the purpose.
If the study estimates how many households in a city lack reliable access to a service, its contribution may be the estimate itself. It does not need to claim that service inequality has never been studied anywhere else.
A city can function as an informative case
Local research can also contribute beyond the locality when the city has characteristics that make it analytically informative.
Perhaps it recently implemented an unusual policy. Perhaps it experienced a rapid demographic or technological transition. Perhaps it combines conditions rarely represented together in previous research. Perhaps existing theories make different predictions under the city's circumstances.
The city then provides a case through which a broader question can be examined.
The contribution is stronger when researchers explain what can be learned from the case rather than merely pointing out that nobody has studied in the case.
City boundaries may not correspond to the phenomenon
Another issue is whether the administrative boundary used in the proposed gap is substantively meaningful.
People commute across city boundaries. Students may attend schools outside their municipality. Patients use health services across jurisdictions. Environmental exposures do not stop at a city line. Online behaviors may have little connection to municipal geography at all.
If the phenomenon operates at a metropolitan, regional, neighborhood, institutional, or household level, defining the gap by city may be arbitrary.
Watch Out
Do not assume that because data can be grouped by city, the city is necessarily the correct conceptual unit for the research question. Define the setting at the level where relevant mechanisms and decisions actually operate.
Local variation within a city can matter more than differences between cities
A single city may contain substantial socioeconomic, environmental, cultural, educational, or infrastructural variation. Treating "City X" as one homogeneous context can therefore obscure the very differences used to justify the local study.
If neighborhood-level conditions plausibly affect the phenomenon, sampling and analysis should recognize them where appropriate. Otherwise, the research risks arguing that context matters when comparing cities while assuming context does not matter within the city.
Local research can test generalizability
Existing findings may be robust across several settings but remain uncertain under conditions represented by your city. A local replication can then provide evidence about generalizability or boundary conditions.
The logic should be explicit: what feature of the city provides a meaningful test, and what would researchers learn if the previous result does or does not replicate?
This turns location from a novelty device into part of the inferential design.
Search locally before concluding that the city has not been studied
City-specific research may be especially vulnerable to incomplete searching. Relevant evidence can appear in local journals, government reports, university repositories, dissertations, planning documents, technical reports, or other sources not prominent in major international databases.
Before claiming local absence, consider whether grey literature could contain evidence missing from journal searches . In multilingual settings, also consider whether research published in another language could change the apparent gap .
A city can look surprisingly unexplored when the search strategy is optimized for international journal visibility rather than local knowledge production.

Before Claiming a City-Specific Research Gap
Before using the city as the basis of your gap, check:
Have I searched beyond major journal databases for locally produced research, reports, theses, and other relevant evidence?
Have I considered research published using local terminology or another relevant language?
Have I identified cities or settings comparable on characteristics relevant to my question rather than merely nearby locations?
Can I explain which local characteristic could plausibly change the phenomenon, mechanism, outcome, or applicability of existing evidence?
Does a local organization or decision maker genuinely require city-specific evidence?
Is the city actually the appropriate contextual unit for the phenomenon I am studying?
Have I considered important variation within the city rather than treating it as homogeneous?
Can I justify the study without relying solely on "nobody has studied this in our city"?
