If Your Study Is Qualitative, Should You Write a Hypothesis?
You have chosen interviews, focus groups, observations, documents, or another qualitative source of evidence. Your study seeks to understand how people experience a phenomenon, what something means to them, how a process unfolds, or why participants interpret an issue in particular ways. Then a familiar research template asks for your hypothesis.
Should you formulate one anyway?
In many qualitative studies, a formal hypothesis to be tested is neither necessary nor particularly compatible with the purpose of the inquiry. Qualitative research commonly begins with open research questions precisely because the researcher wants participants' accounts, observations, or other evidence to inform what is learned rather than restrict the inquiry to a predetermined prediction.
That does not mean qualitative researchers enter a study without prior knowledge, theoretical commitments, assumptions, or expectations. The more useful distinction is between having ideas about what you might encounter and organizing the study around a hypothesis that you intend to test.

Why Qualitative Inquiry Usually Begins With Questions Rather Than Predictions
Qualitative Research Often Asks Open Questions
Qualitative research commonly investigates questions about meaning, experience, interpretation, context, interaction, and process. Rather than beginning with a narrowly specified prediction about variables, the researcher may ask what is happening, how participants understand it, or how a phenomenon develops within a particular setting.
For example:
How do university instructors experience the introduction of generative AI into their assessment practices?
The question deliberately leaves several possibilities open. Faculty members might describe changes in assessment design, concerns about academic integrity, increased experimentation, uncertainty about institutional rules, or issues the researcher did not anticipate at all.
That openness is not a defect waiting to be repaired with a hypothesis. In many qualitative designs, it is part of the methodological logic.
A Hypothesis Does Something Different
A conventional research hypothesis states an expected empirical pattern before the relevant evidence is evaluated. For example:
Instructors with more experience using generative AI will express more positive attitudes toward its use in assessment.
This prediction may be perfectly reasonable in a study designed to examine an expected relationship. But it changes the nature of the inquiry. Instead of primarily asking how instructors experience a phenomenon, the researcher is now specifying what pattern is expected.
This distinction follows the broader difference between a research question and a research hypothesis. The former identifies what the study seeks to understand; the latter commits the researcher to an expected result.
Why Formal Hypothesis Testing Often Fits Poorly With Qualitative Purposes
Many qualitative approaches are designed to preserve openness to meanings, categories, mechanisms, explanations, or interpretations that cannot be specified adequately before engaging deeply with the evidence.
If a researcher studying first-generation university students begins with the hypothesis that "financial difficulty is the primary cause of academic stress," that expectation could prematurely narrow attention. Participants might instead emphasize family expectations, belonging, unfamiliar institutional practices, language, commuting, employment, or interactions among several circumstances.
A broad qualitative question allows those possibilities to emerge and be examined in context.
This does not mean qualitative inquiry is free from assumptions. Researchers make decisions about the phenomenon, participants, theoretical perspective, interview questions, analytical strategy, and interpretation. Qualitative rigor therefore depends partly on making relevant assumptions and interpretive positions visible rather than pretending that the researcher arrived as a perfectly blank slate, an achievement available mostly to unused notebooks.

Qualitative Research Is Not Simply Hypothesis-Free Research
It would be equally misleading to define qualitative research merely by the absence of hypotheses. Qualitative methodologies differ substantially in their epistemological assumptions, theoretical commitments, analytical procedures, and aims.
Some qualitative inquiry is strongly informed by existing theory. Researchers may enter the field with sensitizing concepts, conceptual frameworks, prior findings, or expectations. In other approaches, propositions can emerge during analysis and become progressively refined as researchers compare them with additional evidence.
The important question is what role those ideas play. A concept that guides attention is not necessarily a hypothesis being formally tested. An expectation disclosed for reflexive purposes is not automatically a prediction that participants' accounts are expected to verify.
Can Qualitative Research Generate Hypotheses?
Yes. This is one of the important ways qualitative and subsequent quantitative or confirmatory inquiry can complement one another.
Suppose interviews reveal that students repeatedly associate perceived instructor support with their willingness to disclose their use of generative AI. That recurring pattern might lead researchers to propose a hypothesis for a later study:
Students who perceive greater instructor support will be more willing to disclose their use of generative AI for academic work.
The qualitative evidence helped generate the hypothesis. A subsequent study could then be designed specifically to evaluate it.
The distinction is temporal as well as methodological. A proposition developed from the evidence should not be presented as though it predicted the evidence from which it emerged.
What About Grounded Theory?
Grounded theory provides a particularly useful illustration because its purpose is not normally to begin with a fixed hypothesis and determine whether participants confirm it. Instead, researchers develop theoretical understanding through systematic engagement with data and iterative analysis.
The specific procedures and philosophical assumptions vary among grounded theory traditions. Still, forcing a predetermined hypothesis onto a study whose purpose is theory generation could work against the methodological rationale for selecting grounded theory in the first place.
Other qualitative approaches have different aims. Phenomenological research, ethnography, case study research, narrative inquiry, qualitative content analysis, and other traditions should therefore not be collapsed into a single procedural rule.
What About Theory-Driven Qualitative Research?
Using theory does not automatically turn a qualitative study into hypothesis testing.
A theoretical framework may help identify concepts worth examining, inform sampling or interview questions, sensitize the researcher to particular processes, or provide a lens through which findings are interpreted. The researcher can still remain open to evidence that complicates, extends, or contradicts that framework.
The relevant distinction is between using theory to inform inquiry and using a predetermined proposition as a claim that the study is specifically designed to test.
Researchers Can Have Expectations Without Pretending They Do Not
A qualitative researcher may reasonably expect certain patterns based on professional experience, previous literature, pilot work, or theoretical commitments. The methodological response need not be to suppress those expectations from the report.
Depending on the qualitative tradition, reflexive practice may instead require researchers to examine how their assumptions, positions, and expectations influence the questions they ask and the interpretations they construct.
Recent methodological discussion has even proposed "qualitative hypotheses" as a way of disclosing prior expectations without treating them as predictions that must be tested. This remains distinct from conventional hypothesis testing and should not be assumed to be a standard requirement across qualitative research.
Prior expectation
Something the researcher anticipates or suspects before engaging fully with the evidence.
Testable research hypothesis
A prediction deliberately formulated for empirical evaluation against specified evidence.
Mixed Methods Research May Legitimately Contain Both
A mixed methods study can make the distinction especially visible. Its qualitative component may use open research questions, while its quantitative component may evaluate hypotheses.
For example, researchers could first interview students to understand why they disclose or conceal their use of generative AI. Findings from those interviews could inform constructs and hypotheses for a subsequent survey. Alternatively, quantitative results could be followed by qualitative interviews designed to help explain an unexpected pattern.
There is no contradiction in using questions and hypotheses differently across components when each serves the logic of that component.
