Does Qualitative Research Need Hypotheses?

Most qualitative studies do not require formal hypotheses to be tested because they seek to understand meanings, experiences, processes, or phenomena through open inquiry. Expectations and emerging propositions can still have legitimate roles when handled transparently.

01 · The Question

If Your Study Is Qualitative, Should You Write a Hypothesis?

You have chosen interviews, focus groups, observations, documents, or another qualitative source of evidence. Your study seeks to understand how people experience a phenomenon, what something means to them, how a process unfolds, or why participants interpret an issue in particular ways. Then a familiar research template asks for your hypothesis.

Should you formulate one anyway?

In many qualitative studies, a formal hypothesis to be tested is neither necessary nor particularly compatible with the purpose of the inquiry. Qualitative research commonly begins with open research questions precisely because the researcher wants participants' accounts, observations, or other evidence to inform what is learned rather than restrict the inquiry to a predetermined prediction.

That does not mean qualitative researchers enter a study without prior knowledge, theoretical commitments, assumptions, or expectations. The more useful distinction is between having ideas about what you might encounter and organizing the study around a hypothesis that you intend to test.

02 · The Short Answer

Most Qualitative Studies Use Research Questions Rather Than Testable Hypotheses

In Brief

Qualitative research generally does not require a formal hypothesis to be tested. Most qualitative studies are organized around open research questions that seek to understand meanings, experiences, perspectives, contexts, or processes rather than verify a predetermined prediction.

This is not an absolute prohibition on hypotheses or prior expectations. Qualitative traditions differ, and qualitative inquiry may generate hypotheses or propositions for later investigation. Researchers may also disclose expectations or theoretical commitments without treating them as hypotheses that the qualitative data must confirm.

03 · What You Need to Know

Why Qualitative Inquiry Usually Begins With Questions Rather Than Predictions

Qualitative Research Often Asks Open Questions

Qualitative research commonly investigates questions about meaning, experience, interpretation, context, interaction, and process. Rather than beginning with a narrowly specified prediction about variables, the researcher may ask what is happening, how participants understand it, or how a phenomenon develops within a particular setting.

For example:

How do university instructors experience the introduction of generative AI into their assessment practices?

The question deliberately leaves several possibilities open. Faculty members might describe changes in assessment design, concerns about academic integrity, increased experimentation, uncertainty about institutional rules, or issues the researcher did not anticipate at all.

That openness is not a defect waiting to be repaired with a hypothesis. In many qualitative designs, it is part of the methodological logic.

A Hypothesis Does Something Different

A conventional research hypothesis states an expected empirical pattern before the relevant evidence is evaluated. For example:

Instructors with more experience using generative AI will express more positive attitudes toward its use in assessment.

This prediction may be perfectly reasonable in a study designed to examine an expected relationship. But it changes the nature of the inquiry. Instead of primarily asking how instructors experience a phenomenon, the researcher is now specifying what pattern is expected.

This distinction follows the broader difference between a research question and a research hypothesis. The former identifies what the study seeks to understand; the latter commits the researcher to an expected result.

Why Formal Hypothesis Testing Often Fits Poorly With Qualitative Purposes

Many qualitative approaches are designed to preserve openness to meanings, categories, mechanisms, explanations, or interpretations that cannot be specified adequately before engaging deeply with the evidence.

If a researcher studying first-generation university students begins with the hypothesis that "financial difficulty is the primary cause of academic stress," that expectation could prematurely narrow attention. Participants might instead emphasize family expectations, belonging, unfamiliar institutional practices, language, commuting, employment, or interactions among several circumstances.

A broad qualitative question allows those possibilities to emerge and be examined in context.

This does not mean qualitative inquiry is free from assumptions. Researchers make decisions about the phenomenon, participants, theoretical perspective, interview questions, analytical strategy, and interpretation. Qualitative rigor therefore depends partly on making relevant assumptions and interpretive positions visible rather than pretending that the researcher arrived as a perfectly blank slate, an achievement available mostly to unused notebooks.

Examine meaning What does academic success mean to first-generation university students? Predetermining the meaning could undermine the purpose of asking participants.

Qualitative Research Is Not Simply Hypothesis-Free Research

It would be equally misleading to define qualitative research merely by the absence of hypotheses. Qualitative methodologies differ substantially in their epistemological assumptions, theoretical commitments, analytical procedures, and aims.

Some qualitative inquiry is strongly informed by existing theory. Researchers may enter the field with sensitizing concepts, conceptual frameworks, prior findings, or expectations. In other approaches, propositions can emerge during analysis and become progressively refined as researchers compare them with additional evidence.

The important question is what role those ideas play. A concept that guides attention is not necessarily a hypothesis being formally tested. An expectation disclosed for reflexive purposes is not automatically a prediction that participants' accounts are expected to verify.

Can Qualitative Research Generate Hypotheses?

Yes. This is one of the important ways qualitative and subsequent quantitative or confirmatory inquiry can complement one another.

Suppose interviews reveal that students repeatedly associate perceived instructor support with their willingness to disclose their use of generative AI. That recurring pattern might lead researchers to propose a hypothesis for a later study:

Students who perceive greater instructor support will be more willing to disclose their use of generative AI for academic work.

The qualitative evidence helped generate the hypothesis. A subsequent study could then be designed specifically to evaluate it.

The distinction is temporal as well as methodological. A proposition developed from the evidence should not be presented as though it predicted the evidence from which it emerged.

What About Grounded Theory?

Grounded theory provides a particularly useful illustration because its purpose is not normally to begin with a fixed hypothesis and determine whether participants confirm it. Instead, researchers develop theoretical understanding through systematic engagement with data and iterative analysis.

The specific procedures and philosophical assumptions vary among grounded theory traditions. Still, forcing a predetermined hypothesis onto a study whose purpose is theory generation could work against the methodological rationale for selecting grounded theory in the first place.

Other qualitative approaches have different aims. Phenomenological research, ethnography, case study research, narrative inquiry, qualitative content analysis, and other traditions should therefore not be collapsed into a single procedural rule.

What About Theory-Driven Qualitative Research?

Using theory does not automatically turn a qualitative study into hypothesis testing.

A theoretical framework may help identify concepts worth examining, inform sampling or interview questions, sensitize the researcher to particular processes, or provide a lens through which findings are interpreted. The researcher can still remain open to evidence that complicates, extends, or contradicts that framework.

The relevant distinction is between using theory to inform inquiry and using a predetermined proposition as a claim that the study is specifically designed to test.

Researchers Can Have Expectations Without Pretending They Do Not

A qualitative researcher may reasonably expect certain patterns based on professional experience, previous literature, pilot work, or theoretical commitments. The methodological response need not be to suppress those expectations from the report.

Depending on the qualitative tradition, reflexive practice may instead require researchers to examine how their assumptions, positions, and expectations influence the questions they ask and the interpretations they construct.

Recent methodological discussion has even proposed "qualitative hypotheses" as a way of disclosing prior expectations without treating them as predictions that must be tested. This remains distinct from conventional hypothesis testing and should not be assumed to be a standard requirement across qualitative research.

Prior expectation Something the researcher anticipates or suspects before engaging fully with the evidence.
Testable research hypothesis A prediction deliberately formulated for empirical evaluation against specified evidence.

Mixed Methods Research May Legitimately Contain Both

A mixed methods study can make the distinction especially visible. Its qualitative component may use open research questions, while its quantitative component may evaluate hypotheses.

For example, researchers could first interview students to understand why they disclose or conceal their use of generative AI. Findings from those interviews could inform constructs and hypotheses for a subsequent survey. Alternatively, quantitative results could be followed by qualitative interviews designed to help explain an unexpected pattern.

There is no contradiction in using questions and hypotheses differently across components when each serves the logic of that component.

How a Qualitative Question Can Lead to a Later Hypothesis

Understanding Why Students Disclose Their Use of Generative AI

A researcher wants to understand how university students decide whether to tell instructors that they used generative AI during an assignment.

Qualitative research question How do university students describe the factors that influence whether they disclose their use of generative AI for academic work?
Data generation The researcher conducts in-depth interviews that allow students to describe their reasoning, experiences, concerns, and contextual influences.
Emerging finding Perceived instructor support repeatedly appears in participants' accounts as one factor associated with willingness to disclose AI use.
Hypothesis generation The researcher proposes that students who perceive greater instructor support may be more willing to disclose academic use of generative AI.
Future investigation A subsequent study can operationalize these constructs and evaluate the newly generated hypothesis using independent evidence.

The qualitative study did not fail because it lacked a hypothesis at the beginning. Its open inquiry helped identify a potentially important relationship that was not treated as predetermined.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misconceptions About Hypotheses in Qualitative Research

Misconception

All Research Must Have a Hypothesis, Including Qualitative Research

No universal methodological rule requires every study to test a formal hypothesis. Many qualitative studies appropriately use research questions because their purpose is exploratory, interpretive, descriptive, or theory-generating. The broader question of whether every research study needs a hypothesis should be answered according to research purpose rather than ritual.

Misconception

Qualitative Researchers Must Enter the Study With No Expectations

Researchers are not empty vessels. Prior literature, disciplinary training, theoretical perspectives, professional experience, and personal positioning may shape what they notice and how they interpret it. Depending on the methodology, acknowledging and reflecting on those influences may be more defensible than claiming complete neutrality.

Misconception

A Theoretical Framework Means You Must Have Hypotheses

No. Theory can guide a qualitative inquiry without being converted into predictions for formal testing. It may provide sensitizing concepts or an interpretive lens while the researcher remains attentive to evidence that extends, challenges, or complicates the framework.

Misconception

If a Pattern Emerges, You Can Report It as Your Original Hypothesis

A proposition generated during analysis may be valuable, but its origin matters. Reporting an emergent explanation as though it had been specified before seeing the evidence obscures the difference between discovery and prediction. Researchers should state transparently when an idea emerged from the data.

Misconception

Not Testing Hypotheses Makes Qualitative Research Less Rigorous

Qualitative rigor is evaluated through criteria appropriate to the methodology and claims being made. Careful sampling, rich and appropriate evidence, systematic analysis, reflexivity, transparency, and defensible interpretation cannot be replaced by attaching a hypothesis to the study.

06 · What This Means for You

Let the Qualitative Purpose Determine Whether a Hypothesis Belongs

If you are conducting qualitative research, begin with the methodological purpose rather than asking how to retrofit a hypothesis into the proposal.

A simple decision framework

If you want to understand participants' experiences, meanings, or perspectives
Use open research questions appropriate to your qualitative methodology.
If you want to understand how a process unfolds or how participants interpret a phenomenon
Avoid narrowing the inquiry to an unsupported predicted answer merely to create a hypothesis.
If existing theory informs your inquiry
Explain how the framework guides the study without assuming that every theoretical concept must become a hypothesis.
If you already have expectations about what you may find
Consider whether your methodological tradition calls for those expectations to be disclosed or reflected upon rather than formally tested.
If qualitative findings produce a new prediction
Identify it transparently as hypothesis-generating and consider testing it with independent evidence.

If the study genuinely requires a prediction to be evaluated, ask whether the chosen qualitative design is actually intended to perform that function or whether another design would better address the hypothesis. If a formal hypothesis is appropriate, it should meet the same basic requirement as any other scientific prediction: it must be possible to evaluate it meaningfully against evidence.

Watch Out

Do not add a hypothesis solely because an institutional template contains a hypothesis heading. Methodological alignment should come first. If your program imposes a particular format, clarify with your adviser, committee, or research office how that requirement should be handled for the qualitative methodology you are actually using.

Before Adding a Hypothesis to Qualitative Research

Check the methodological logic first:
What is the qualitative study actually trying to understand?
Would an open research question better serve that purpose than a predicted answer?
Does your specific qualitative methodology normally organize inquiry around questions, propositions, sensitizing concepts, or another device?
Have you distinguished theoretical guidance from a hypothesis intended for testing?
Have you considered how your prior expectations and positioning may influence the inquiry?
If a hypothesis emerged from your analysis, have you reported it as generated from the evidence rather than predicted beforehand?
If your project is mixed methods, have you considered questions and hypotheses separately for each component?
Have you checked methodological, institutional, and publication requirements relevant to your particular qualitative approach?

Frequently Asked Questions About Qualitative Research and Hypotheses

Can qualitative research have a hypothesis?

It can, but formal hypotheses to be tested are uncommon in many qualitative approaches. Qualitative studies may instead use open research questions, theoretical propositions, sensitizing concepts, or explicitly disclosed expectations depending on their methodological tradition and purpose.

Why are research questions more common in qualitative research?

Open questions allow researchers to investigate meanings, experiences, processes, and perspectives without unnecessarily restricting the inquiry to a predetermined answer. This flexibility is particularly useful when understanding the phenomenon in context is itself the purpose of the research.

Can grounded theory research start with a hypothesis?

Grounded theory is generally oriented toward developing theoretical understanding through iterative engagement with data rather than beginning by testing a fixed hypothesis. Specific grounded theory traditions differ, so researchers should follow the methodological assumptions and procedures of the approach they have selected.

Can qualitative research generate hypotheses?

Does phenomenological research need a hypothesis?

Phenomenological studies generally seek to understand lived experience rather than test predetermined variable-based predictions. Research questions aligned with the particular phenomenological tradition are therefore usually more appropriate than conventional hypotheses.

Does having a conceptual framework mean I need hypotheses?

No. A conceptual or theoretical framework can orient a qualitative study without being converted into hypotheses. Its role should be explained in a manner consistent with the methodology and the way the researcher intends to use theory during data generation and interpretation.

What should I do if my thesis template requires a hypothesis?

Check the actual institutional requirement and discuss it with your adviser or research committee. A generic template may cover several methodological traditions and may not mean that every qualitative study is expected to manufacture a formal hypothesis.

Qualitative Inquiry Usually Needs a Good Question More Than a Predicted Answer

The Bottom Line

Most qualitative research does not require a formal hypothesis to be tested. Open research questions are usually more appropriate when the purpose is to understand experiences, meanings, perspectives, contexts, or processes without predetermining what the evidence should reveal.

That does not require researchers to deny their prior knowledge or expectations. Theory and expectations may inform qualitative inquiry, and qualitative findings can generate hypotheses for later investigation. What matters is being clear about whether an idea guided the inquiry, emerged from the evidence, or was genuinely specified in advance for testing.
