Research Question vs. Hypothesis: When Do You Need Each?

A research question states what your study seeks to find out, while a hypothesis predicts what you expect to find. Learn when research requires one, the other, or both.

Should Your Study Have a Research Question, a Hypothesis, or Both?

You know what you want to investigate, but then comes an unexpectedly awkward part of designing the study: should you write a research question, formulate a hypothesis, or include both?

The terms are sometimes treated as if they were interchangeable ways of stating the same idea. They are not. A research question asks what the study will investigate. A hypothesis goes further by stating an expectation that can be examined against evidence. That distinction matters because the appropriate choice depends on what you are trying to learn, what is already known, and how the study is designed.

In some studies, a research question is sufficient. In others, hypotheses are appropriate. A study can also legitimately contain both, provided each has a clear methodological purpose.

The Difference Comes Down to Asking Versus Predicting

In Brief

A research question states what you want to find out, whereas a research hypothesis states what you expect to find and makes that expectation testable against empirical evidence.

You generally use research questions when the inquiry is descriptive, exploratory, qualitative, or otherwise does not require an advance prediction. Hypotheses are particularly useful when a study tests predicted differences, associations, or effects. Depending on the design and reporting convention, a quantitative or mixed methods study may use both.

How Research Questions and Hypotheses Serve Different Purposes

What Is a Research Question?

A research question expresses the specific question that the study is designed to answer. It translates a broader research problem into something that can be investigated systematically.

For example:

What is the relationship between students' academic self-efficacy and their engagement in online courses?

This question identifies what the researcher wants to examine without specifying in advance what the relationship will look like. The evidence collected and analyzed during the study provides the basis for answering it.

Research questions can serve many purposes. They may ask what exists, how participants experience a phenomenon, whether groups differ, whether variables are associated, or how a process unfolds. Their form therefore depends heavily on the methodological approach.

What Is a Research Hypothesis?

A research hypothesis is a specific, empirically examinable prediction about an expected pattern, difference, relationship, or effect. It normally arises from prior evidence, theory, or a defensible line of reasoning rather than from an arbitrary guess.

The previous research question might therefore be accompanied by this hypothesis:

Students with higher academic self-efficacy will report higher levels of engagement in online courses.

The difference is subtle but consequential. The research question leaves the relationship open. The hypothesis commits the researcher, before evaluating the relevant results, to a particular expectation.

A useful hypothesis must also be capable of being evaluated using the study's data and design. A prediction that cannot meaningfully be confronted with evidence does not become a good hypothesis merely because it sounds scientific. The characteristics that make such statements empirically examinable are considered more closely when determining whether a hypothesis is actually testable.

A Hypothesis Is Not Simply a Research Question Rewritten as a Statement

Changing punctuation does not create a hypothesis.

Consider the research question:

Is there a relationship between academic self-efficacy and online learning engagement?

Rewriting it as "There is a relationship between academic self-efficacy and online learning engagement" creates a prediction, but whether that prediction is scientifically justified is another matter. A defensible hypothesis should have a rationale grounded in relevant theory, prior research, preliminary evidence, or another reasonable evidentiary basis.

This is why the process of deciding where a hypothesis comes from matters. A hypothesis should not be added simply because a thesis template has a blank space labeled "Hypothesis."

When Is a Research Question Usually Enough?

A research question may be sufficient when the purpose is to describe a phenomenon, explore an underdeveloped area, understand experiences or meanings, or investigate something for which an advance prediction is neither necessary nor well justified.

Suppose you want to know how university instructors experience the introduction of generative AI into their assessment practices. If the objective is to understand their experiences, concerns, adaptations, and interpretations, an open research question is more congruent with that purpose than predicting beforehand what those experiences must be.

This is especially relevant to qualitative inquiry, where research questions commonly orient an open investigation of a phenomenon rather than specify variable-based predictions. Whether formal hypotheses have a role depends on the methodological tradition and purpose, which is why the question of whether qualitative research needs hypotheses deserves separate treatment.

When Does a Hypothesis Make Sense?

A hypothesis becomes useful when you have a sufficiently grounded expectation that the study is designed to evaluate. This commonly occurs in confirmatory quantitative research involving predicted relationships, group differences, or effects.

For instance, imagine that theory and previous studies give you reason to expect retrieval practice to produce better delayed test performance than rereading. If your experiment is specifically designed to test that expectation, stating it as a hypothesis makes the prediction explicit before the relevant evidence is interpreted.

That prediction must be stated with enough precision to correspond to the variables, population, comparison, and analysis actually used. Developing such a statement requires more than predicting that "something will happen." A useful starting point is to develop the hypothesis from the study's conceptual and empirical rationale.

Can You Use Both a Research Question and a Hypothesis?

Yes. They can perform complementary functions.

A broad research question might ask:

Does retrieval practice affect students' delayed retention compared with rereading?

A corresponding hypothesis might predict:

Students who use retrieval practice will achieve higher delayed-test scores than students who reread the same material.

The research question identifies what the investigation seeks to answer. The hypothesis specifies the expected answer that will be evaluated. Some quantitative studies and institutional formats present these in paired form, although conventions vary across disciplines, journals, supervisors, and research traditions.

Not Every Research Question Naturally Produces a Hypothesis

This point prevents a great deal of unnecessary methodological contortion.

Consider the descriptive question:

How frequently do first-year university students use generative AI tools for academic tasks?

You could invent a prediction about the frequency, but doing so adds little unless there is a substantive reason to test that particular expectation. A descriptive study can estimate the frequency and answer the research question without needing to pretend that an advance prediction was central to the inquiry.

The broader issue of whether every study needs a hypothesis therefore cannot be settled by a universal formatting rule. The purpose and logic of the research should determine whether a hypothesis contributes anything meaningful.

Methodology Matters More Than the Label

It is tempting to adopt a simple rule such as "quantitative equals hypotheses" and "qualitative equals research questions." That shortcut is convenient, but it is too crude.

Quantitative studies can ask descriptive questions without testing substantive hypotheses. Exploratory quantitative work may also investigate patterns without strong advance predictions. Conversely, a confirmatory quantitative design may make hypotheses central to the study.

Mixed methods research can contain qualitative questions, quantitative questions or hypotheses, and questions concerned with integrating the two strands. The appropriate structure follows what each component of the design is intended to accomplish.

Hypothetical Example

Testing Retrieval Practice in an Online Course

A researcher is interested in whether retrieval practice improves students' retention of course material. Previous theoretical and empirical work provides a reasonable basis for expecting an advantage over simple rereading.

Research problem Students often forget material after completing online lessons, and the researcher wants to examine whether a particular learning strategy improves delayed retention.
Research question Do students who use retrieval practice differ in delayed-test performance from students who reread the same material?
Research hypothesis Students who use retrieval practice will achieve higher delayed-test scores than students who reread the same material.
Evidence The researcher conducts the planned comparison and estimates the difference in delayed-test performance between the conditions.
Interpretation The resulting evidence is used to answer the research question and evaluate how well the prespecified hypothesis is supported.

The question and hypothesis are related, but they are doing different jobs. The question defines the uncertainty the study addresses. The hypothesis makes the researcher's expected result explicit.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Between Questions and Hypotheses

Misconception

Every Research Study Must Have a Hypothesis

No universal methodological rule requires every study to state a formal hypothesis. Descriptive, exploratory, and many qualitative studies may appropriately be organized around research questions. What matters is whether an advance prediction is justified and useful for the study's purpose.

Misconception

Quantitative Research Always Requires Hypotheses

Quantitative research can be descriptive as well as inferential or explanatory. A survey estimating how frequently students use a technology, for example, may answer a quantitative descriptive question without requiring a substantive prediction. The issue is examined more specifically in relation to whether descriptive studies need hypotheses.

Misconception

A Research Question Is Just a Hypothesis With a Question Mark

The difference is conceptual, not grammatical. A research question identifies an uncertainty to investigate. A hypothesis states an expected outcome. Simply converting one grammatical form into another does not establish that the prediction has adequate theoretical or empirical justification.

Misconception

If You Have a Hypothesis, You Should Remove the Research Question

Not necessarily. A study can use a research question to define the inquiry and a hypothesis to specify the expected answer. Whether both should appear explicitly depends partly on disciplinary and reporting conventions, so check the requirements relevant to your study.

Misconception

A Hypothesis Must Predict a Direction

Some hypotheses predict the direction of an expected relationship or difference, while others state that a relationship or difference is expected without specifying its direction. The appropriate choice depends on the strength and nature of the prior justification. The distinction between directional and nondirectional hypotheses should therefore be made deliberately rather than treated as a formatting preference.

Misconception

A Research Question Can Be Turned Into a Hypothesis After You See the Results

You can develop new hypotheses after examining data, but those hypotheses are then informed by the observed data and should be presented transparently as such rather than portrayed as predictions specified beforehand. Exploratory findings can be valuable sources of future hypotheses. Concealing when a prediction was formulated, however, changes how readers may interpret the evidential strength of the apparent test.

How to Decide What Your Own Study Needs

Start with the intellectual purpose of the study rather than the section headings in a template. Ask what you genuinely know before collecting or analyzing the relevant data and what kind of claim your design is intended to support.

A simple decision framework

If you want to explore a phenomenon without committing to an expected result
Use a research question.
If you want to describe the prevalence, frequency, characteristics, or distribution of something
A descriptive research question may be sufficient unless a particular prediction is substantively justified and relevant.
If prior theory or evidence supports a specific prediction that your design can evaluate
A hypothesis may be appropriate.
If the research question defines the inquiry and you also have a justified prediction
You may state both the research question and its corresponding hypothesis.
If different parts of the study serve different purposes
Use research questions and hypotheses selectively where each is methodologically appropriate.

Once you decide that a hypothesis is warranted, the next issue is not merely how to phrase it. You need to ensure that the prediction is sufficiently precise, conceptually defensible, and empirically examinable. Those requirements are central to deciding how specific a research hypothesis should be.

Watch Out

Do not invent a hypothesis solely to satisfy what you assume research is supposed to look like. An unjustified prediction does not make a study more scientific. It may instead create a mismatch among the research problem, questions, design, and analysis.

Before Finalizing Your Research Questions and Hypotheses

Before deciding what your study needs, check:
Can you state clearly what the study is trying to find out?
Does each research question correspond to something your design and data can actually address?
If you propose a hypothesis, is there a defensible reason to expect that result before examining the relevant findings?
Is each hypothesis empirically testable using the variables, observations, or comparisons in your study?
Have you avoided forcing hypotheses onto purely descriptive or open-ended questions without a substantive reason?
If you use both questions and hypotheses, does each hypothesis correspond logically to the question it helps address?
Does the wording match what your research design can legitimately establish?
Have you checked the conventions required by your discipline, institution, supervisor, journal, or reporting guideline?

Frequently Asked Questions About Research Questions and Hypotheses

Can a study have both research questions and hypotheses?

Yes. A research question can state what the study seeks to answer, while a corresponding hypothesis specifies the expected result. Studies may also use questions for some objectives and hypotheses for others. The appropriate arrangement depends on the study design and disciplinary conventions.

Does every research question need a corresponding hypothesis?

No. Some research questions are descriptive, exploratory, or qualitative and do not require an advance prediction. A hypothesis should be included because it serves the logic of the study, not simply to create a one-to-one pair with every research question.

Which comes first, the research question or the hypothesis?

Conceptually, the research problem and purpose usually establish what needs to be investigated, and research questions articulate that inquiry. Where sufficient theory or evidence supports a prediction, a hypothesis can then express the expected answer. Actual proposal and article structures vary, however, and some studies present hypotheses without separately stated corresponding questions.

Can I use a hypothesis in exploratory research?

Possibly, but the role of the hypothesis needs to fit the exploratory purpose. If little is known and there is insufficient basis for a strong prediction, open research questions may be more appropriate. Exploratory analyses can also generate hypotheses for later confirmatory testing. The distinction is considered more fully when examining whether exploratory research can have hypotheses.

Does qualitative research use research questions or hypotheses?

Qualitative studies are commonly organized around open research questions that explore meanings, experiences, processes, or phenomena. Formal variable-based hypotheses to be statistically tested are generally not the organizing device used in many qualitative designs, although methodological traditions differ and qualitative inquiry can contribute to developing propositions or hypotheses.

Is a null hypothesis the same as a research question?

No. A research question asks what the study seeks to determine. A null hypothesis is a statistical statement, commonly specifying no difference, association, or effect in the population under a particular model. It should not be treated as another name for the research question. The relationship becomes clearer when distinguishing the null and alternative hypotheses.

Can one research question have several hypotheses?

Yes. A sufficiently broad research question may imply several distinct predictions, particularly when multiple variables, groups, mechanisms, or outcomes are involved. Each hypothesis should nevertheless have a clear rationale and analytical role rather than multiplying hypotheses unnecessarily.

Use a Question to Define the Inquiry and a Hypothesis to State a Prediction

The Bottom Line

A research question tells readers what you are trying to find out; a research hypothesis tells them what you predict the evidence will show. You may need a question, a hypothesis, or both depending on the purpose and design of the study.

Do not choose between them mechanically. If you are exploring or describing something without a justified advance prediction, a research question may be enough. If theory or prior evidence supports a testable prediction, a hypothesis can make that expectation explicit. When both serve useful purposes, they can work together.
