Should Your Study Have a Research Question, a Hypothesis, or Both?
You know what you want to investigate, but then comes an unexpectedly awkward part of designing the study: should you write a research question, formulate a hypothesis, or include both?
The terms are sometimes treated as if they were interchangeable ways of stating the same idea. They are not. A research question asks what the study will investigate. A hypothesis goes further by stating an expectation that can be examined against evidence. That distinction matters because the appropriate choice depends on what you are trying to learn, what is already known, and how the study is designed.
In some studies, a research question is sufficient. In others, hypotheses are appropriate. A study can also legitimately contain both, provided each has a clear methodological purpose.

How Research Questions and Hypotheses Serve Different Purposes
What Is a Research Question?
A research question expresses the specific question that the study is designed to answer. It translates a broader research problem into something that can be investigated systematically.
For example:
What is the relationship between students' academic self-efficacy and their engagement in online courses?
This question identifies what the researcher wants to examine without specifying in advance what the relationship will look like. The evidence collected and analyzed during the study provides the basis for answering it.
Research questions can serve many purposes. They may ask what exists, how participants experience a phenomenon, whether groups differ, whether variables are associated, or how a process unfolds. Their form therefore depends heavily on the methodological approach.
What Is a Research Hypothesis?
A research hypothesis is a specific, empirically examinable prediction about an expected pattern, difference, relationship, or effect. It normally arises from prior evidence, theory, or a defensible line of reasoning rather than from an arbitrary guess.
The previous research question might therefore be accompanied by this hypothesis:
Students with higher academic self-efficacy will report higher levels of engagement in online courses.
The difference is subtle but consequential. The research question leaves the relationship open. The hypothesis commits the researcher, before evaluating the relevant results, to a particular expectation.
A useful hypothesis must also be capable of being evaluated using the study's data and design. A prediction that cannot meaningfully be confronted with evidence does not become a good hypothesis merely because it sounds scientific. The characteristics that make such statements empirically examinable are considered more closely when determining whether a hypothesis is actually testable.

A Hypothesis Is Not Simply a Research Question Rewritten as a Statement
Changing punctuation does not create a hypothesis.
Consider the research question:
Is there a relationship between academic self-efficacy and online learning engagement?
Rewriting it as "There is a relationship between academic self-efficacy and online learning engagement" creates a prediction, but whether that prediction is scientifically justified is another matter. A defensible hypothesis should have a rationale grounded in relevant theory, prior research, preliminary evidence, or another reasonable evidentiary basis.
This is why the process of deciding where a hypothesis comes from matters. A hypothesis should not be added simply because a thesis template has a blank space labeled "Hypothesis."
When Is a Research Question Usually Enough?
A research question may be sufficient when the purpose is to describe a phenomenon, explore an underdeveloped area, understand experiences or meanings, or investigate something for which an advance prediction is neither necessary nor well justified.
Suppose you want to know how university instructors experience the introduction of generative AI into their assessment practices. If the objective is to understand their experiences, concerns, adaptations, and interpretations, an open research question is more congruent with that purpose than predicting beforehand what those experiences must be.
This is especially relevant to qualitative inquiry, where research questions commonly orient an open investigation of a phenomenon rather than specify variable-based predictions. Whether formal hypotheses have a role depends on the methodological tradition and purpose, which is why the question of whether qualitative research needs hypotheses deserves separate treatment.
When Does a Hypothesis Make Sense?
A hypothesis becomes useful when you have a sufficiently grounded expectation that the study is designed to evaluate. This commonly occurs in confirmatory quantitative research involving predicted relationships, group differences, or effects.
For instance, imagine that theory and previous studies give you reason to expect retrieval practice to produce better delayed test performance than rereading. If your experiment is specifically designed to test that expectation, stating it as a hypothesis makes the prediction explicit before the relevant evidence is interpreted.
That prediction must be stated with enough precision to correspond to the variables, population, comparison, and analysis actually used. Developing such a statement requires more than predicting that "something will happen." A useful starting point is to develop the hypothesis from the study's conceptual and empirical rationale.
Can You Use Both a Research Question and a Hypothesis?
Yes. They can perform complementary functions.
A broad research question might ask:
Does retrieval practice affect students' delayed retention compared with rereading?
A corresponding hypothesis might predict:
Students who use retrieval practice will achieve higher delayed-test scores than students who reread the same material.
The research question identifies what the investigation seeks to answer. The hypothesis specifies the expected answer that will be evaluated. Some quantitative studies and institutional formats present these in paired form, although conventions vary across disciplines, journals, supervisors, and research traditions.
Not Every Research Question Naturally Produces a Hypothesis
This point prevents a great deal of unnecessary methodological contortion.
Consider the descriptive question:
How frequently do first-year university students use generative AI tools for academic tasks?
You could invent a prediction about the frequency, but doing so adds little unless there is a substantive reason to test that particular expectation. A descriptive study can estimate the frequency and answer the research question without needing to pretend that an advance prediction was central to the inquiry.
The broader issue of whether every study needs a hypothesis therefore cannot be settled by a universal formatting rule. The purpose and logic of the research should determine whether a hypothesis contributes anything meaningful.
Methodology Matters More Than the Label
It is tempting to adopt a simple rule such as "quantitative equals hypotheses" and "qualitative equals research questions." That shortcut is convenient, but it is too crude.
Quantitative studies can ask descriptive questions without testing substantive hypotheses. Exploratory quantitative work may also investigate patterns without strong advance predictions. Conversely, a confirmatory quantitative design may make hypotheses central to the study.
Mixed methods research can contain qualitative questions, quantitative questions or hypotheses, and questions concerned with integrating the two strands. The appropriate structure follows what each component of the design is intended to accomplish.

How to Decide What Your Own Study Needs
Start with the intellectual purpose of the study rather than the section headings in a template. Ask what you genuinely know before collecting or analyzing the relevant data and what kind of claim your design is intended to support.
A simple decision framework
If you want to explore a phenomenon without committing to an expected result
Use a research question.
If you want to describe the prevalence, frequency, characteristics, or distribution of something
A descriptive research question may be sufficient unless a particular prediction is substantively justified and relevant.
If prior theory or evidence supports a specific prediction that your design can evaluate
A hypothesis may be appropriate.
If the research question defines the inquiry and you also have a justified prediction
You may state both the research question and its corresponding hypothesis.
If different parts of the study serve different purposes
Use research questions and hypotheses selectively where each is methodologically appropriate.
Once you decide that a hypothesis is warranted, the next issue is not merely how to phrase it. You need to ensure that the prediction is sufficiently precise, conceptually defensible, and empirically examinable. Those requirements are central to deciding how specific a research hypothesis should be.
Watch Out
Do not invent a hypothesis solely to satisfy what you assume research is supposed to look like. An unjustified prediction does not make a study more scientific. It may instead create a mismatch among the research problem, questions, design, and analysis.

Before Finalizing Your Research Questions and Hypotheses
Before deciding what your study needs, check:
Can you state clearly what the study is trying to find out?
Does each research question correspond to something your design and data can actually address?
If you propose a hypothesis, is there a defensible reason to expect that result before examining the relevant findings?
Is each hypothesis empirically testable using the variables, observations, or comparisons in your study?
Have you avoided forcing hypotheses onto purely descriptive or open-ended questions without a substantive reason?
If you use both questions and hypotheses, does each hypothesis correspond logically to the question it helps address?
Does the wording match what your research design can legitimately establish?
Have you checked the conventions required by your discipline, institution, supervisor, journal, or reporting guideline?
