Can a Research Gap Exist Only Because Previous Studies Use Different Definitions?

Different definitions can create a meaningful research gap when conceptual inconsistency prevents studies from being compared, synthesized, or interpreted confidently. But variation in wording alone is not enough.

01 · The Question

What If Researchers Study the Same Concept but Do Not Mean the Same Thing?

You review a literature and find plenty of studies on your topic. At first, there seems to be no obvious gap.

Then you start comparing what the studies actually mean by the central concept.

One paper defines it broadly. Another treats only one dimension as the entire construct. A third uses the same label but applies a substantially different definition. Several studies measure the concept differently enough that their findings are difficult to compare.

In this situation, the problem is not necessarily that research is missing. The problem may be that researchers are producing evidence about differently defined versions of what appears, on the surface, to be the same thing. That conceptual inconsistency can sometimes constitute a meaningful research gap.

02 · The Short Answer

Can Conflicting Definitions Create a Genuine Research Gap?

In Brief

Yes. Different definitions can create a meaningful research gap when conceptual inconsistency makes it difficult to determine whether studies are investigating the same construct, compare findings, accumulate evidence, develop valid measures, or draw coherent conclusions.

However, definitional variation is not automatically a gap. Different definitions may reflect legitimate distinctions among constructs, contexts, disciplines, or theoretical perspectives. The research problem emerges when the variation creates consequential uncertainty that the existing literature does not resolve.

03 · What You Need to Know

When Different Definitions Become a Knowledge Problem

The same label can conceal different concepts

Academic terminology can create an illusion of consistency. Two studies may both claim to investigate "engagement," "AI literacy," "resilience," "digital competence," "well-being," or another construct while defining it differently.

One study might conceptualize a construct as primarily behavioral. Another may include cognitive and emotional dimensions. A third may operationalize it through a single proxy that captures only part of the broader concept.

The studies share a label, but whether they share a construct requires closer examination.

Terminological consistency Studies use the same or similar words for a concept.
Conceptual consistency Studies define the construct in sufficiently compatible ways that their evidence can reasonably be interpreted as addressing the same underlying concept.

The first does not guarantee the second.

Different labels and different definitions are separate problems

This distinction is easy to miss.

Researchers may use different terms for substantially the same concept. That is primarily a terminology problem. Alternatively, researchers may use the same term for substantively different concepts. That is a definitional problem.

If different labels are hiding an otherwise coherent literature, first investigate whether terminological variation is creating an apparent gap.

Definitional inconsistency becomes more consequential when reading the studies reveals that researchers disagree about the construct's boundaries, dimensions, essential attributes, or relationship to neighboring concepts.

Conceptual definitions matter because measurement depends on them

A conceptual definition specifies what a construct means and what belongs within its domain. This is not merely a preliminary writing exercise.

Methodological scholarship on construct development has argued that clear conceptual definitions are foundational to theory building and measurement. Wacker, for example, links formal conceptual definition to the development of meaningful measures, while Podsakoff and colleagues emphasize that conceptual clarity supports scientific communication and cumulative knowledge.

If researchers disagree about what a construct is, their measures may capture different attributes while appearing to measure the same variable.

That creates a basic interpretive problem: when two studies report different findings, are they genuinely contradicting each other, or did they measure different versions of the construct?

Conceptual and operational definitions should not be confused

Conceptual definition Specifies what the construct means and the domain it is intended to represent.
Operational definition Specifies how the construct is observed, measured, classified, or otherwise represented empirically in a particular study.

Two studies can share a conceptual definition while operationalizing it differently. That does not automatically mean they study different constructs. Multiple measures can sometimes provide complementary evidence about the same concept.

The more serious problem occurs when operational differences arise because researchers conceptualize the underlying construct differently, or when a measure captures only a restricted part of the construct while conclusions are stated about the whole.

Not all definitional disagreement should be eliminated

Conceptual plurality can be intellectually productive. Different theoretical traditions may emphasize different aspects of a phenomenon for defensible reasons. A construct may also need context-sensitive specification rather than one universal definition.

Forcing every study to adopt one definition can erase meaningful distinctions.

Watch Out

Do not treat conceptual standardization as an automatic objective. The research problem is not simply that multiple definitions exist. It is that the differences create unresolved consequences for interpretation, measurement, comparison, theory, or application.

Ask whether the definitions are competing, complementary, or merely different in wording

When definitions vary, compare their substantive content.

The useful question is therefore not "How many definitions did I find?" It is "What consequences follow from the differences among them?"

Definitional inconsistency can make contradictory findings difficult to interpret

Suppose one group of studies finds that a construct predicts an outcome while another finds little relationship. If the construct is defined differently across those studies, treating the results as straightforward replication failures may be misleading.

The apparent inconsistency could partly reflect conceptual heterogeneity.

A meaningful gap might therefore concern whether findings depend on how the construct is defined or which dimensions are included. Research could compare conceptualizations, examine dimensional structure, test alternative measures, or determine which definition best serves a particular theoretical or practical purpose.

A new definition is not automatically a contribution

Discovering conceptual inconsistency does not give researchers license to invent another definition and add it to the pile.

A proposed definition should clarify rather than further fragment the literature. It should specify the construct's essential attributes and boundaries, distinguish it from related concepts, and explain why the proposed conceptualization improves interpretation or theory.

Sometimes the better contribution is not a new definition at all. It may be a synthesis showing how existing definitions relate, a taxonomy distinguishing separate constructs, or empirical work examining whether competing conceptualizations lead to different conclusions.

Different definitions may reveal that your original gap was poorly formulated

Suppose you initially conclude that findings about X are inconsistent. After examining definitions, you discover that one literature defines X as one phenomenon while another defines it as something substantially different.

The original gap, "research on X is inconsistent," may no longer be accurate. The better problem is that the label X aggregates distinct constructs, making the literature appear more contradictory than it really is.

In that situation, conceptual clarification can change the research question itself. This connects directly to whether a research gap disappears after the question is reformulated.

Definition problems should survive a careful literature search

Before claiming widespread conceptual confusion, make sure you have not created it through a narrow or fragmented search. Another discipline may already distinguish the concepts clearly. Older literature may contain foundational definitions. Authors may explicitly explain why their definitions differ.

A claimed definitional gap should therefore be subjected to the same discipline as other gap claims: look deliberately for evidence that could resolve it before building a study around it.

When Several Definitions Make the Literature Look More Consistent Than It Is

Hypothetical Example

What exactly counts as "AI literacy"?

Suppose a researcher reviews studies examining AI literacy among university students. Many papers exist, so an obvious absence gap is difficult to claim.

Initial impression Many studies investigate "AI literacy" → apparently mature evidence base
Definition comparison Some studies define AI literacy mainly as technical knowledge, others include critical evaluation and ethical judgment, while others incorporate practical use and communication with AI systems.
Measurement comparison The instruments reflect those differences. A student could score highly under one operationalization and considerably lower under another.
Interpretive problem Prevalence estimates and relationships with other variables cannot be compared straightforwardly because "AI literacy" does not represent the same construct across all studies.
Refined gap The unresolved issue concerns how competing conceptualizations alter measurement and conclusions about students' AI literacy.

The researcher should not simply declare that the field needs one universally correct definition. A stronger study could map the competing conceptualizations, identify their shared and distinctive dimensions, and test whether substantive conclusions change depending on how AI literacy is defined and measured.

The gap is therefore not "nobody has studied AI literacy." It is that conceptual inconsistency limits what can confidently be concluded from the studies that already exist.

Common Mistakes When Treating Different Definitions as a Research Gap

Misconception

"Different Definitions Automatically Mean the Literature Has a Gap"

No. Definitions may differ only superficially, or different definitions may appropriately represent distinct theoretical perspectives or contexts. Show what consequential uncertainty the variation creates.

Misconception

"Researchers Using the Same Term Must Be Studying the Same Construct"

A shared label can conceal substantially different construct domains. Compare the definitions, dimensions, measures, and theoretical framing rather than relying on terminology alone.

Misconception

"Different Measures Mean Different Definitions"

Not necessarily. Researchers can operationalize the same conceptual construct differently. Determine whether the measures represent a shared construct or reflect deeper conceptual disagreement.

Misconception

"The Solution Is to Invent a Better Definition"

Sometimes conceptual refinement is warranted, but another definition can increase fragmentation if it does not resolve a demonstrated problem. Clarification, synthesis, comparison, or taxonomy development may be more useful.

Misconception

"One Definition Must Eventually Win"

Not always. Multiple definitions may be legitimate when they address distinct dimensions, purposes, contexts, or theoretical traditions. The research task may be to clarify their boundaries rather than force them into one construct.

Identify What the Definition Problem Prevents Researchers From Knowing

If you find multiple definitions, resist the temptation to label the variation itself as the gap. First determine its consequences.

A simple decision framework

If definitions differ mainly in wording but share the same substantive domain
Do not exaggerate the variation into a conceptual gap.
If definitions include different dimensions or boundaries
Determine whether those differences change measurement, findings, theory, or interpretation.
If the same term refers to substantially different constructs
Consider whether conceptual clarification or differentiation is needed before further empirical accumulation.
If competing definitions produce different substantive conclusions
Frame the gap around the uncertainty those conceptualizations create.
If multiple definitions are legitimate for different purposes
Clarify when each conceptualization is appropriate rather than assuming standardization is necessary.

A useful conceptual gap should therefore be expressible as more than "researchers define this differently." Explain what we cannot compare, synthesize, measure, explain, or decide because they define it differently.

Before treating definitional inconsistency as the research gap, check:
Have I extracted the actual conceptual definitions rather than inferring them from keywords or variable names?
Do the definitions differ substantively, or mostly in wording?
Have I distinguished conceptual definitions from operational measures?
Do competing definitions include different dimensions, boundaries, assumptions, or related constructs?
Does definitional variation prevent meaningful comparison or synthesis of findings?
Could apparently conflicting findings partly reflect different conceptualizations?
Are multiple definitions legitimately appropriate for different theoretical or practical purposes?
Can I explain what knowledge problem would be resolved by clarifying, comparing, or distinguishing the definitions?

Do inconsistent definitions count as a research gap?

They can when the inconsistency creates consequential uncertainty about what is being studied, prevents comparison or synthesis, undermines measurement, or produces conflicting interpretations. Mere variation in wording is insufficient.

What is the difference between a conceptual and operational definition?

The Bottom Line

A research gap can arise from different definitions when conceptual inconsistency prevents researchers from determining what is being studied, comparing findings, developing valid measures, accumulating evidence, or reaching coherent conclusions.

Do not treat every definitional difference as a gap. Compare the substance of the definitions, distinguish conceptual variation from measurement variation, and identify the uncertainty created by the disagreement. The contribution lies in resolving a consequential conceptual problem, not simply documenting that authors use different definitions.
