What If the Research Exists Under a Different Name?
You search for your topic using the terminology that seems most natural. Very few studies appear. The result looks promising: perhaps you have found an underexplored problem.
Then you encounter a paper using a different term for something remarkably similar. You search that term and suddenly discover an entire literature.
This is not unusual. Academic concepts do not always have one stable label. Different disciplines may name similar phenomena differently. Terminology can also change over time, vary across countries, or reflect competing theoretical traditions. If your search follows only one label, existing research can become practically invisible.
The question is therefore not merely whether researchers have used your term . It is whether they have already investigated the underlying concept .

How Terminology Can Hide Relevant Research
A keyword is not the same thing as a concept
A concept is the phenomenon, construct, population, intervention, outcome, or relationship you are trying to investigate. A term is one way that concept is expressed in language.
Confusing the two can produce a false gap.
Term absent
Previous papers do not use the particular word or phrase you searched.
Concept absent
Previous research does not adequately investigate the underlying idea represented by that term.
Only the second condition can meaningfully contribute to a research-gap argument. Novel vocabulary is not necessarily novel knowledge.
One concept may have several legitimate names
Terminological variation can arise for many reasons. Authors may use synonyms, abbreviations, spelling variants, broader or narrower terms, historical labels, theoretical constructs, or discipline-specific expressions. A concept that is familiar under one label in education may be described differently in psychology, medicine, communication, information systems, or another field.
This is why robust literature searches commonly combine free-text terms with controlled vocabulary where the database provides it. Controlled vocabularies such as Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) group records under standardized subject concepts, while free-text searching captures words used by authors in titles, abstracts, and other searchable fields. Neither approach is sufficient in every circumstance, so combining them can improve retrieval.
Terminology changes over time
New terminology often emerges around phenomena that are not entirely new. Technologies are renamed, diagnostic categories change, educational practices acquire new labels, and theoretical constructs are refined or repackaged.
Suppose a contemporary term became common only five years ago. Searching that phrase across twenty years of literature will predictably produce few older results. Yet older researchers may have examined closely related phenomena using the vocabulary available at the time.
This does not mean the new concept is always identical to its predecessors. Sometimes a new term reflects a genuinely different phenomenon. The point is that you must establish the difference rather than infer it from vocabulary alone.
Different disciplines can develop parallel vocabularies
Terminology becomes particularly consequential when a research problem crosses disciplinary boundaries. Fields can develop partly separate conceptual traditions around similar human behaviors, organizational processes, technologies, or social problems.
A researcher searching only the language of one field may therefore encounter what looks like a sparse literature even though another field has investigated the phenomenon extensively. Cross-disciplinary search research has identified specialized language as a particular challenge when evidence must be integrated across disciplinary boundaries.
When alternative terminology appears to lead into another scholarly tradition, ask whether research from another discipline already addresses the underlying question .
Population terminology can create the same problem
Sometimes the apparent gap concerns not the main phenomenon but the population. The same or substantially overlapping group may be described through educational level, occupation, age, clinical category, employment status, administrative classification, or another label.
Searching one population term can therefore fragment the evidence. Before claiming that a population has not been studied, examine whether different labels describe substantially the same population .
Definitions matter more than labels
Finding two papers that use different terminology does not automatically mean they study the same thing. Conversely, finding two papers using the same term does not guarantee that they define it identically.
Read how authors conceptualize and operationalize the construct. Examine definitions, theoretical frameworks, measurement instruments, inclusion criteria, and the actual variables or behaviors studied.
Watch Out
Do not solve terminological variation by collapsing every vaguely related concept into one category. Two labels may overlap without being interchangeable. The objective is to determine conceptual equivalence or meaningful overlap, not merely collect synonyms.
If the literature uses the same language but assigns materially different meanings to it, the issue may instead concern differences in how previous studies define the concept .
Known relevant papers can help you discover the vocabulary
You do not need to invent every possible search term before opening a database. Literature searching is often iterative.
Start with terminology you know, then inspect highly relevant papers. What keywords do the authors use? Which subject headings are assigned to the records? What terms appear in their titles and abstracts? How do they describe the concept in their theoretical framework? What terminology appears in papers they cite?
Those discoveries can be fed back into the search. This process can reveal terminology that would have been difficult to anticipate from your own disciplinary perspective.
A terminology test should challenge your gap, not protect it
Once you suspect a gap, there is a subtle temptation to keep searching with terms that reproduce the same sparse results. A better approach is adversarial: search for terminology most likely to uncover research that would weaken your claim.
If alternative terms reveal studies that already answer the question, the gap should change. If those studies address only adjacent concepts, you may still have a defensible gap, but you can now explain precisely why the existing evidence does not resolve it.
This is one way of distinguishing a substantive gap from an apparent gap produced by the literature search itself .
04 · A Practical Example
How One New Search Term Can Transform the Literature
Hypothetical Example
Searching for "AI dependency" among university students
Suppose a researcher wants to study university students becoming excessively dependent on generative AI. The initial searches repeatedly use the phrase "AI dependency." Few directly relevant studies appear, so the researcher begins drafting a proposal around an apparent lack of research.
Initial concept Excessive dependence on generative AI
Initial terminology "AI dependency" → sparse literature
Vocabulary expansion Relevant papers introduce terms such as overreliance, reliance, cognitive offloading, automation bias, technology dependence, and related constructs.
Conceptual checking The researcher reads definitions and measures to determine which terms genuinely overlap with the intended phenomenon.
Revised conclusion The broader phenomenon has been studied more extensively than the original search suggested, although a narrower unanswered question may remain.
The researcher should not automatically treat all of these concepts as equivalent. For example, cognitive offloading may capture only part of what the researcher means by dependency. Automation bias may concern inappropriate reliance on automated recommendations rather than generative AI use generally.
That conceptual comparison is precisely the point. The gap cannot be established by counting papers containing the phrase "AI dependency." It requires determining what earlier studies actually investigated.
06 · What This Means for You
Search the Concept Before You Declare the Concept Missing
When a proposed gap depends heavily on the absence of one phrase, treat that as a reason to investigate further rather than as evidence of novelty.
A simple decision framework
If very few studies use your exact term
Identify synonyms, related constructs, abbreviations, broader and narrower concepts, and historical terminology.
If the database provides controlled vocabulary
Inspect relevant subject headings and combine appropriate subject terms with free-text searching.
If terminology varies across fields
Search the vocabulary used in each relevant discipline rather than translating every field into your preferred terminology.
If alternative terms retrieve many studies
Compare their definitions and operationalizations before deciding whether they fill, narrow, or merely border the proposed gap.
If alternative terminology still reveals no adequate evidence
Your gap claim becomes stronger, although it should still be tested against other possible explanations for the apparent absence.
The objective is not to produce the longest possible keyword list. It is to build a conceptual map of how the phenomenon has been named and studied. That map often improves both the literature review and the eventual theoretical framing of the study.

Before Treating Terminology as Evidence of a Gap
Before concluding that the concept has not been studied, check:
Have I distinguished the underlying concept from the particular term I currently use for it?
Have I searched appropriate synonyms, abbreviations, spelling variants, broader terms, narrower terms, and closely related constructs?
Have I examined terminology used in highly relevant papers and their reference lists?
Have I checked relevant controlled vocabulary or subject headings where available?
Have I considered historical terminology if the phenomenon existed before the current label became common?
Have I considered terminology used by neighboring disciplines?
Have I compared definitions and operationalizations rather than assuming that similar terms are equivalent?
Would my gap still exist if the strongest conceptually related studies used completely different terminology?
