How Can Research Improve Professional Knowledge and Practice?

Research can strengthen professional practice by testing assumptions, evaluating interventions, identifying risks, explaining variation, and giving practitioners evidence to consider alongside expertise and local knowledge.

01 · The Question

How Does Research Actually Change What Professionals Know and Do?

Professionals accumulate substantial knowledge through education, training, experience, observation, colleagues, institutional procedures, and repeated encounters with real problems. A teacher learns from students. A nurse learns from patients. An engineer learns from systems that succeed and fail. A manager learns what tends to happen inside an organization.

Why, then, is research necessary for professional practice?

One reason is that experience tells us what we have encountered, while research can systematically investigate whether the patterns we think we see are supported by broader evidence. It can compare alternatives, test explanations, evaluate interventions, identify harms, and reveal conditions under which an apparently effective practice performs differently.

Yet the relationship is not as simple as "research discovers the answer and professionals follow it." Research evidence must be interpreted, evaluated for relevance, combined with contextual knowledge, and translated into decisions made under real constraints.

Research Gives Professional Practice a More Systematic Evidence Base

Research can improve professional knowledge and practice by systematically examining what works, what does not, for whom, under what conditions, with what risks, and why, giving professionals stronger evidence for evaluating and improving their decisions and practices.

Research evidence should not be applied mechanically. Professional expertise, local conditions, available resources, stakeholder preferences, feasibility, ethics, and other contextual factors may affect what should be done in a particular situation. Evidence-informed practice therefore integrates research with judgment rather than replacing judgment.

03 · What You Need to Know

Research Can Strengthen Both What Professionals Know and How They Act

Research can test practices that seem effective

Professionals naturally learn from experience. If an approach repeatedly appears to work, it becomes reasonable to consider whether the approach contributes to the outcome.

But observation alone may not distinguish the effect of the practice from other explanations. Outcomes may have improved because the population changed, another intervention occurred simultaneously, conditions improved, or the cases in which the practice failed were less memorable.

Research can investigate such claims more systematically. Depending on the question, researchers may compare alternatives, control or account for competing explanations, collect evidence across larger populations, or examine the same practice under different conditions.

This is why research and professional experience should complement rather than simply compete with each other.

Research can reveal that established practice needs revision

A professional practice may be common without being optimal.

Research can show that an intervention produces less benefit than assumed, that risks were underestimated, that outcomes differ among groups, or that another approach performs better under particular conditions.

This corrective function matters because professional knowledge can otherwise become self-reinforcing. If everybody learns a practice because everybody already uses it, widespread adoption can be mistaken for evidence of effectiveness.

Research provides a mechanism through which established assumptions can be questioned.

Research can identify what works for whom and under what conditions

"Does it work?" is often too simple a professional question.

An intervention may have an average positive effect while producing different outcomes across populations. A procedure effective in a well-resourced organization may be difficult to implement elsewhere. A teaching strategy may depend on learner characteristics, subject matter, instructor preparation, or technological infrastructure.

Research can investigate this variation.

For practitioners, knowing the conditions under which an intervention is more or less likely to help can be more useful than a universal claim that it simply "works."

Research can identify harms and unintended consequences

Professional decisions often involve trade-offs. An intervention may improve one outcome while worsening another. A new technology may increase efficiency but create accessibility or privacy concerns. A policy intended to support one population may inadvertently disadvantage another.

Research can examine outcomes that informal experience might overlook, particularly harms that are uncommon, delayed, unevenly distributed, or difficult to attribute to a particular practice.

Professional improvement therefore involves more than maximizing intended benefits. It also requires understanding risks and unintended effects.

Research can improve diagnosis and understanding of professional problems

Not every professional problem should begin with the question, "Which intervention should we use?" Sometimes the problem itself is poorly understood.

An organization may observe high staff turnover but misunderstand its causes. A school may see declining attendance without knowing which factors matter most. A health service may experience low uptake despite assuming that access is adequate.

Research can characterize the problem before solutions are selected. Qualitative studies may illuminate experiences and processes. Quantitative studies may identify patterns, distributions, associations, or trends. Mixed approaches may address complementary aspects of a complex problem.

A better diagnosis can prevent professionals from implementing elegant solutions to the wrong problem, a phenomenon with a surprisingly robust presence in institutional life.

Research can evaluate innovations before they become routine

New does not necessarily mean better.

Organizations and professions continually encounter new technologies, programs, procedures, instructional approaches, and management strategies. Enthusiasm can encourage adoption before adequate evidence exists.

Research can evaluate whether an innovation produces its intended outcomes, whether benefits justify costs and risks, how implementation affects results, and whether effects persist beyond initial adoption.

This evaluative role becomes increasingly important when decisions affect large populations or require substantial resources.

Research can make professional knowledge cumulative

Individual practitioners eventually leave their positions. Organizations change personnel. Without systematic documentation and research, valuable lessons can remain trapped in personal experience.

Research allows observations to become part of a shared evidence base. Other professionals can examine the methods, compare findings with their own settings, replicate the work, and integrate results with additional studies.

Professional knowledge can therefore accumulate beyond what any one practitioner has personally experienced.

Evidence does not implement itself

A study can produce convincing evidence without changing practice.

Professionals may not know the research exists. Findings may be inaccessible, difficult to interpret, inconsistent with existing workflows, expensive to implement, or poorly suited to local conditions. Organizational incentives may favor established practices. Staff may lack time, training, authority, or resources to change what they do.

This gap between producing evidence and using it is why implementation matters. Research utilization often involves synthesis, communication, professional development, organizational support, adaptation, monitoring, and continued evaluation.

Professional expertise remains necessary

Evidence-informed practice does not turn professional work into an algorithm in which the practitioner simply follows whatever the latest paper reports.

The World Health Organization's guidance on evidence-informed decision-making emphasizes identifying, appraising, and mobilizing the best available evidence while recognizing the broader context in which decisions occur.

Professionals need expertise to judge whether research is credible and relevant, how findings apply to a particular person or setting, which outcomes matter, and what constraints affect implementation.

Research can therefore improve decisions under uncertainty without pretending to eliminate professional judgment.

Professionals can also produce research

The relationship between researchers and practitioners need not be one-directional.

Professionals are often well positioned to identify important questions because they encounter problems directly. Practitioner-led or collaborative research can investigate issues emerging from real practice and generate evidence grounded in relevant contexts.

Such work still requires appropriate research design, ethical safeguards, analytical rigor, and transparent reporting. Being close to a problem provides insight, but it does not remove the possibility of bias or make systematic investigation unnecessary.

When done well, research can connect professional knowledge with broader scholarly inquiry rather than treating practice and research as separate worlds.

Research Can Turn a Professional Impression Into a Testable Question

Hypothetical Example

Does a new advising practice actually improve student retention?

Imagine academic advisers at a university believe that contacting students proactively during the first weeks of a semester improves retention.

Professional observation Advisers notice that students who receive early contact often appear more engaged and are less likely to disappear from the program.
Research question The university investigates whether proactive advising is associated with meaningful improvements in relevant student outcomes and which students appear to benefit.
Evidence The study compares appropriate outcomes, examines possible alternative explanations, and gathers information about students' experiences with the intervention.
Interpretation Researchers find that the practice appears beneficial under some conditions but requires substantial staff time and has little effect for one group of students.
Professional response Instead of simply adopting or abandoning the practice, the university modifies how it targets and implements proactive advising and continues monitoring outcomes.

The research did not replace the advisers' experience. Their observations helped identify the question. Systematic evidence then allowed the institution to examine the practice more critically and refine how professional judgment was used.

Misunderstandings About Research and Professional Practice

Misconception

Should Professionals Follow Whatever Research Says?

No. Research must be evaluated for quality and relevance, and professional decisions may also involve context, feasibility, resources, ethics, stakeholder preferences, equity, and other considerations. Evidence informs professional judgment rather than mechanically replacing it.

Misconception

If a Practice Works in Research, Will It Work Everywhere?

Not necessarily. Effects can depend on populations, settings, implementation quality, resources, and other contextual factors. Professionals should consider how closely the research conditions resemble their own and what adaptations might change the expected outcome.

Misconception

Does Professional Experience Become Irrelevant Once Research Exists?

No. Experience can help practitioners recognize contextual differences, implement interventions, interpret unusual cases, and identify questions that formal research has not addressed. The limitation arises when experience alone is treated as sufficient evidence for claims that can be investigated systematically.

Does a Statistically Significant Finding Mean Practice Should Change?

No. Statistical significance alone does not establish practical importance, effect size, certainty, feasibility, cost, acceptability, equity, or the balance between benefits and harms. Decisions about practice require a broader interpretation of the evidence.

Use Research to Question, Refine, and Strengthen Practice

If you are a professional, research is most useful when it helps you ask better questions about what you already do.

Which practices rest on strong evidence? Which are mainly inherited from convention? Which appear successful but have never been evaluated systematically? Which outcomes matter to the people affected by the practice? What happens when research findings conflict with what you observe locally?

A simple decision framework

If a practice appears effective from experience
Look for systematic evidence and ask whether alternative explanations have been adequately examined.
If research supports a practice
Assess the quality of the evidence and whether the populations, settings, outcomes, and conditions are sufficiently relevant to your context.
If evidence conflicts with local experience
Investigate whether the difference reflects research limitations, contextual variation, implementation, measurement, or features of the local population.
If evidence is incomplete
Use the best available evidence cautiously, make uncertainty explicit, and consider whether local evaluation or further research is warranted.
If a new practice is introduced
Monitor intended outcomes, unintended consequences, implementation problems, and whether benefits justify the resources required.

Research-informed professional improvement is therefore iterative. Evidence changes practice, practice generates new observations, those observations create new questions, and further research can test them.

When this process becomes part of a profession's shared knowledge rather than remaining inside individual workplaces, research can also strengthen the discipline or profession itself.

Watch Out

A research finding can be scientifically credible and still be poorly suited to a particular professional decision. Before recommending a change in practice, distinguish what the evidence establishes from the additional judgment required to determine whether, where, and how the finding should be applied.
