If Experience and Experts Already Tell Us What Works, Why Do We Need Research?
People were making decisions long before modern research existed. Professionals learn from years of practice. Communities preserve knowledge across generations. Teachers notice which approaches seem effective with their students. Experienced managers recognize patterns that newcomers miss. Experts accumulate specialized knowledge that most people cannot reasonably acquire themselves.
These sources of knowledge matter. The problem begins when we treat any of them as sufficient simply because they are familiar or persuasive.
Experience can be selective. Tradition can preserve practices whose original justification is no longer applicable. Authorities can be mistaken or disagree with one another. Even highly experienced people can infer patterns from unusual cases, overlook alternatives, or become confident in explanations that have never been systematically tested.
Research offers another way of knowing. Rather than asking us to accept a claim primarily because someone experienced it, inherited it, or said it, research asks how the claim can be investigated systematically and what evidence supports it.
03 · What You Need to Know
Different Ways of Knowing Have Different Strengths and Limitations
Experience gives us direct knowledge of particular situations
Experience can be extraordinarily valuable. A nurse who has cared for thousands of patients may recognize warning signs that are difficult to capture in a simple checklist. An experienced teacher may notice subtle changes in classroom behavior. A community member may understand local conditions that an outside researcher could easily miss.
Experience can generate hypotheses, reveal contextual details, inform interpretation, and help identify whether a proposed intervention is realistic.
Its limitation is not that experience is inherently unreliable. The problem is that personal experience represents a particular and usually non-random collection of observations. We see some cases and not others. We may remember dramatic outcomes more readily than ordinary ones. We rarely observe what would have happened if we had made a different choice in exactly the same circumstances.
Consequently, "I have seen this work many times" can be important information without establishing how often it works, why it works, whether it causes the observed outcome, or whether it would work elsewhere.
Tradition can preserve accumulated knowledge
Practices can persist because generations of people have found them useful. Cultural and professional traditions may contain knowledge that would be irresponsible to dismiss simply because it was not originally produced through contemporary research methods.
But persistence does not itself establish effectiveness or truth.
A practice can continue because it works, because it once worked under different conditions, because institutions reward conformity, because alternatives are unfamiliar, or simply because nobody has seriously questioned it.
Research creates an opportunity to ask which explanation is better supported.
Authority helps us use knowledge we cannot independently master
No researcher, professional, or citizen can personally verify every relevant claim. We necessarily rely on people and institutions with specialized expertise.
Authority therefore has an important practical role. The relevant question is why an authority should be trusted on a particular claim.
Expertise grounded in a substantial body of evidence is different from accepting a statement merely because a prestigious person made it. Experts can interpret complex evidence, but they can also disagree, work outside their areas of expertise, or rely on outdated assumptions.
Research gives both experts and non-experts an evidentiary basis that can, at least in principle, be examined and challenged.
Research makes the method part of the claim
A major difference between systematic research and an unsupported assertion is that research should make clear how the conclusion was reached.
Who or what was studied? How were concepts measured? What evidence was collected? How was it analyzed? What alternative explanations were considered? What limitations affect the interpretation?
Those details allow other people to evaluate the reasoning rather than simply accepting the researcher's conclusion.

Research allows competing explanations to be examined
Suppose a teacher introduces a new activity and students subsequently perform better. Experience suggests the activity worked.
Perhaps it did. But other explanations are possible. The students may have become more familiar with the material. The second assessment may have been easier. Different students may have completed it. Another change in instruction may have occurred simultaneously.
Research design attempts to distinguish among plausible explanations. Different designs provide different degrees and kinds of evidence, and no design solves every inferential problem. Still, explicitly considering alternative explanations is more defensible than assuming that the most obvious story must be correct.
Research makes correction possible
Research findings are not valuable because researchers are immune to error. They are valuable partly because methods, data, analyses, and conclusions can be scrutinized, challenged, replicated, extended, or contradicted.
UNESCO's Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers emphasizes open communication of scientific results, hypotheses, and opinions as central to the scientific process and as an important safeguard for accuracy and objectivity.
A finding therefore does not become unquestionable merely because it has been published. Peer review does not guarantee correctness, and a single study rarely settles a complex question.
This openness to correction is part of what distinguishes systematic inquiry from claims maintained primarily through authority.
Research can examine whether experience generalizes
An experienced professional may be exactly right about what happens in a particular setting. The unresolved question is whether the same pattern occurs elsewhere.
Research can examine larger or deliberately selected samples, compare contexts, investigate variation, and test whether an apparent relationship persists under different conditions.
This is particularly important when decisions affect people who differ from those represented in someone's personal experience.
Research does not replace judgment
The contrast should not be exaggerated. Evidence-informed decision-making does not require decision-makers to discard professional expertise, local knowledge, stakeholder perspectives, or contextual understanding.
The World Health Organization describes evidence-informed decision-making as identifying, appraising, and mobilizing the best available evidence. Its broader guidance recognizes that evidence must be brought into decision processes rather than treated as an automatic command.
A clinician, educator, policymaker, or manager still has to judge whether research applies to the circumstances at hand. Research helps with decisions under uncertainty, but it does not remove the need for interpretation.
Research instead of experience
An unnecessarily rigid view in which formal evidence is assumed to make contextual and professional knowledge irrelevant.
Research alongside experience
A more defensible approach in which systematic evidence is considered together with relevant expertise, context, values, and practical knowledge.
The real comparison is not “research versus everything else”
Research itself depends on human judgment. Researchers choose questions, operationalize concepts, interpret results, and decide which limitations matter. Scientific communities also develop traditions and recognize authorities.
The distinctive feature is therefore not that research somehow escapes human judgment. It is that well-conducted research subjects important parts of that judgment to explicit procedures, evidence, criticism, and possible correction.
That is one reason systematic inquiry remains an important purpose of research even when people already possess substantial practical knowledge.
06 · What This Means for You
Treat Experience as Evidence to Examine, Not Evidence to Worship or Dismiss
If professional experience, local practice, or expert opinion suggests that something is true, you may already have the beginning of an important research question.
Ask what observation supports the belief. Then ask what alternative explanations could produce the same observation and what evidence would distinguish among them.
A simple decision framework
If a claim comes mainly from personal experience
Ask whether systematic evidence supports the pattern and whether it occurs beyond the cases personally observed.
If a practice is justified mainly because “we have always done it this way”
Investigate its rationale, current evidence, outcomes, and whether the conditions that originally supported it still apply.
If an expert makes an important claim
Consider the expert's relevant expertise and the quality of the evidence underlying the judgment rather than status alone.
If research conflicts with credible local experience
Examine research quality, applicability, implementation differences, and contextual factors before assuming either source must simply be discarded.
This approach avoids two extremes. One is to treat research as unnecessary because experience already provides the answer. The other is to treat published research as a superior form of knowledge regardless of quality or context.
The more productive question is what each source allows you to conclude, where its limitations lie, and what additional evidence would reduce consequential uncertainty. That is part of determining whether further research is worth doing.
Watch Out
Do not use “evidence-based” as shorthand for “ignore everyone who works in the real world.” Research may establish average patterns while practitioners and communities hold essential knowledge about implementation and context. The strongest decisions often require careful integration rather than a contest over whose knowledge counts.
