Research paradigms can seem unnecessarily philosophical, but their practical purpose is straightforward: they make assumptions about knowledge and inquiry more explicit. Learn what researchers actually need to understand without turning methodology into a philosophy course.

01 · The Question

What Does a Research Paradigm Actually Mean?

You open a methodology textbook and suddenly encounter positivism, postpositivism, interpretivism, constructivism, pragmatism, critical realism, transformative paradigms, ontology, epistemology, axiology, and methodology. Different authors classify them differently. Some call them paradigms, others call them worldviews or philosophical positions. Before long, choosing a research paradigm can feel like choosing a philosophical identity before you are allowed to collect any data.

That is where researchers can lose sight of the practical issue.

A research paradigm is useful because research rests on assumptions about reality, knowledge, evidence, and how knowledge can reasonably be produced. Those assumptions can influence the questions you ask, the evidence you regard as meaningful, how you investigate a phenomenon, and what kinds of conclusions you believe your evidence can support.

You do not need to become a philosopher to understand this. You do need enough philosophical awareness to recognize the assumptions underlying your research and to make methodological choices that you can defend coherently.

A Research Paradigm Is a Framework of Assumptions About Inquiry

A research paradigm is a broad framework of assumptions about reality, knowledge, and inquiry that helps shape how researchers understand what can be studied, what counts as knowledge, and how that knowledge can be produced.

Paradigms such as postpositivism, constructivism or interpretivism, pragmatism, critical realism, and transformative or critical approaches differ in important ways, but the terminology and classifications are not completely standardized across the methodological literature. What matters most is not memorizing a taxonomy. It is understanding the assumptions relevant to your study and ensuring that your research question, methodology, methods, and claims can be justified together.

03 · What You Need to Know

Understanding Research Paradigms Without Getting Lost in Philosophy

Start With the Basic Idea: Research Is Built on Assumptions

Imagine two researchers studying the same phenomenon: students' experiences of artificial intelligence in higher education.

One researcher might ask whether AI use predicts academic performance across a large student population. Another might ask how students understand what responsible AI use means within their courses. A third might investigate how institutional AI policies distribute power, opportunities, and risks among different groups of students.

These differences are not merely choices between a survey, an interview, and some other method. The researchers may be approaching the phenomenon with different assumptions about what is important to know, what constitutes convincing evidence, how knowledge is produced, and what research is supposed to accomplish.

A research paradigm provides one way of articulating these underlying assumptions.

Why Is the Word "Paradigm" So Confusing?

There is no single classification of research paradigms that every discipline and methodology textbook follows. The word itself has been used in different ways, and methodological traditions have developed their own terminology.

In applied research literature, a paradigm commonly refers to a broad philosophical framework that organizes assumptions about knowledge and inquiry. Other authors use terms such as research worldview, philosophical worldview, philosophical position, or philosophical assumptions in overlapping ways. Research philosophy and research paradigm are also sometimes treated as interchangeable and sometimes distinguished.

This variation matters because two textbooks can organize essentially related ideas under different labels. One may discuss positivism, interpretivism, and critical theory. Another may emphasize postpositivism, constructivism, transformative approaches, and pragmatism. Still another may include critical realism as a major alternative.

That does not necessarily mean one list is correct and the others are wrong. Paradigm taxonomies reflect different intellectual histories and methodological traditions.

Watch Out

Do not assume that every textbook uses "paradigm," "worldview," "philosophy," "positivism," "constructivism," or related terms in exactly the same way. When terminology matters to your thesis or article, define how you are using it and ground that usage in the methodological literature relevant to your field.

Four Questions Help Make the Philosophy Concrete

One influential way of discussing research paradigms is to examine their assumptions about ontology, epistemology, methodology, and sometimes axiology. These terms can initially sound more intimidating than the ideas they represent.

Concept Practical question What it concerns
Ontology What is the nature of the reality I am investigating? Assumptions about what exists and what reality is like.
Epistemology What can I know about it, and how can that knowledge be justified? Assumptions about knowledge and the relationship between the knower and what is known.
Methodology How should I investigate it? The logic, strategy, or approach through which knowledge is generated.
Axiology What role do values play in the research? Assumptions about values, ethics, purposes, and the researcher's relationship to inquiry.

Not every framework gives these concepts equal prominence, and not every paradigm can be neatly reduced to four boxes. Pragmatist scholars, for example, have challenged approaches that make metaphysical questions the primary organizing basis for social research. Still, ontology and epistemology remain useful vocabulary because they expose questions that researchers otherwise tend to leave implicit.

Ontology Asks What Kind of Reality You Think You Are Studying

Ontology concerns the nature of reality or what exists.

Suppose you study student engagement. Is engagement a phenomenon that exists independently and can be approximated through observable indicators? Is its meaning constructed through students' interactions and contexts? Are there real mechanisms generating engagement that may not be directly observable? Might the phenomenon also need to be understood in relation to social structures and power?

Your answer influences what you think there is to discover.

This does not mean that every researcher must write several pages explaining the nature of reality. The point is to recognize that apparently simple research concepts can carry assumptions about what kind of phenomenon they represent.

Epistemology Asks What Counts as Knowledge About That Reality

Epistemology concerns knowledge: what can be known, how knowledge can be justified, and how the researcher relates to what is being investigated.

A researcher may emphasize systematic observation and measurement as ways of developing fallible but increasingly reliable knowledge. Another may argue that understanding a social phenomenon requires interpreting meanings produced within particular contexts. Another may focus on identifying underlying causal mechanisms rather than only observable regularities.

These are not merely preferences for different data-collection tools. They involve different accounts of what constitutes warranted knowledge.

Methodology Connects Philosophical Assumptions to the Logic of Inquiry

Methodology concerns the rationale and strategy through which a research problem is investigated. It should not be confused with individual techniques such as questionnaires, interviews, observations, experiments, or statistical tests.

The relationship matters because philosophical assumptions can influence what kind of inquiry makes sense. If your goal is to estimate a causal effect, you need a design capable of supporting that type of inference. If your goal is to understand how people construct meaning around an experience, a methodology centered only on estimating population averages may leave the central question unanswered.

This is why the relationship between paradigm and methodology deserves attention. Alignment does not mean following a rigid philosophical recipe. It means being able to explain why your way of investigating the problem makes sense given the knowledge claims you intend to make.

Axiology Draws Attention to Values and Purposes

Axiology concerns values and, depending on the philosophical framework, questions about ethics and the purposes of inquiry.

Researchers differ in how they understand the role of values. Some traditions emphasize procedures intended to reduce the influence of researchers' preferences on findings. Interpretive traditions may treat the researcher's situated role as part of the knowledge-production process. Critical and transformative approaches may explicitly connect inquiry with questions of power, inequality, participation, and social change.

The existence of values does not mean evidence becomes optional. Rather, different paradigmatic traditions conceptualize the relationship among researchers, values, evidence, and knowledge differently.

What Are the Major Research Paradigms?

There is no universally authoritative list, but several positions recur throughout contemporary social, behavioral, educational, and applied research literature. The comparison below is deliberately introductory. Each position has a more complicated intellectual history than can be captured in a few sentences.

Positivism Knowledge grounded in observation, empirical regularities, and systematic scientific inquiry. Measurement, explanation, prediction, and the search for regularities or relationships.
Postpositivism An external reality may be investigated, but human knowledge of it is fallible, provisional, and open to correction. Empirical testing, critical scrutiny, probabilistic claims, and attempts to reduce error and bias.
Interpretivism / Constructivism Understanding meanings, experiences, interpretations, and socially or historically situated realities. Contextual understanding and interpretation of how people make sense of phenomena.
Pragmatism Inquiry oriented toward problems, consequences, action, and the usefulness of different ways of knowing for addressing the problem at hand. Methodological pluralism and selecting forms of inquiry appropriate to the research problem.
Critical Realism Reality exists independently of our knowledge, but observable events may be generated by deeper structures and causal mechanisms. Explaining how mechanisms operate within particular contexts to produce outcomes.
Transformative / Critical Knowledge and inquiry are examined in relation to power, inequality, marginalization, justice, and possibilities for change. Research that attends explicitly to power relations, participation, social structures, and transformation.

These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable textbook definitions. Positivism has several historical forms. Postpositivism differs from classical positivism in consequential ways. Interpretivism and constructivism overlap but are not always treated as identical. Pragmatism is a substantial philosophical tradition, not simply a license to "use whatever works." Critical realism has its own account of reality, causation, and explanation. Critical and transformative traditions likewise encompass multiple intellectual lineages.

The table is therefore a map, not the territory. Methodologists do love a taxonomy, but the boxes become considerably less obedient once you read the literature behind them.

Positivism and Postpositivism

Positivism is historically associated with the pursuit of systematic, empirically grounded knowledge and the investigation of observable regularities. Its meaning has changed across intellectual traditions, so reducing it to "quantitative research" is misleading.

Postpositivism developed partly through critiques of stronger positivist accounts of scientific knowledge. In contemporary methodological discussions, postpositivist positions commonly retain a commitment to empirical investigation while emphasizing that observations and theories are fallible and that knowledge claims remain provisional and subject to criticism and revision.

This makes postpositivism a common philosophical orientation in contemporary quantitative research, but quantitative research is not required to be positivist or postpositivist.

Interpretivism and Constructivism

Interpretivism emphasizes understanding the meanings through which people experience and interpret social phenomena. Rather than assuming that social reality can always be understood adequately through measurement of externally observable variables, interpretive inquiry often examines meaning within social, cultural, and historical contexts.

Constructivist approaches similarly emphasize the ways meanings and understandings are constructed rather than simply discovered as context-free facts. The terms are frequently associated and sometimes used almost interchangeably, but their precise relationship depends on the methodological tradition being used.

They are strongly associated with qualitative research, yet it is too simplistic to assume that every qualitative study must be interpretivist or constructivist.

Pragmatism

Pragmatism has become especially prominent in discussions of mixed-methods research. Pragmatist approaches emphasize inquiry, consequences, problems, and the relationship between knowing and acting rather than treating abstract metaphysical commitments as the sole starting point for research.

David Morgan has argued for pragmatism as a broad paradigm for social research and cautioned against assuming deterministic connections between paradigms and methods. Pragmatism is therefore not merely the idea that researchers can choose whatever technique is convenient. Nor does mixed-methods research have to use pragmatism.

Critical Realism

Critical realism distinguishes what exists from what researchers can know about it and emphasizes that observable events may arise from underlying causal mechanisms operating under particular conditions.

For a critical realist, observing that two variables are associated may be insufficient. The researcher may ask what mechanism could generate the observed pattern, under what circumstances it operates, and why the outcome differs across contexts.

This orientation has become influential in fields concerned with explanation, complex interventions, organizations, policy, health, and social systems, although critical realist methodology encompasses considerable internal debate.

Transformative and Critical Paradigms

Transformative and critical approaches place questions of power, inequality, oppression, representation, participation, and social change closer to the center of inquiry.

Rather than treating research as detached from political and social structures, these approaches may ask whose knowledge is privileged, whose experiences are excluded, how institutional arrangements reproduce inequality, and whether research processes themselves can contribute to transformation.

The category includes diverse traditions, so "critical" should not be treated as the name of one homogeneous philosophy.

A Paradigm Is Not the Same Thing as a Method

One of the most consequential mistakes is to collapse paradigms into the quantitative-versus-qualitative distinction.

Researchers sometimes encounter formulas such as:

Quantitative = positivist.

Qualitative = interpretivist.

Mixed methods = pragmatic.

These associations can describe common methodological tendencies, but they are not universal rules. Morgan explicitly argues that affinities between paradigms and methods do not create deterministic links requiring particular methods to belong to particular paradigms.

The same research method can be used under different paradigmatic assumptions. Interviews, for example, can be used interpretively to understand participants' meanings, critically to examine power and marginalization, or within a mixed design for a different inferential purpose. Quantitative data can likewise appear within postpositivist, pragmatic, critical realist, transformative, and other frameworks.

Paradigm Broad assumptions about reality, knowledge, inquiry, and sometimes values and purposes.
Methodology The logic or strategy through which the research problem is investigated.
Method A specific procedure or technique used to generate, collect, or analyze evidence.

Paradigms Should Guide Reasoning, Not Become Methodological Labels

A paradigm is useful when it helps you make sense of actual research decisions. It becomes less useful when it appears only as a label in a methodology chapter.

Writing "this study adopts a constructivist paradigm" tells the reader relatively little unless the assumptions associated with that position have consequences for the study. What does constructivism imply for your research question? How does it shape your understanding of knowledge? Why is your methodology appropriate? What kinds of claims will you make from the resulting evidence?

The same standard applies to postpositivism, pragmatism, critical realism, or any other position.

A paradigm should help explain your research logic. It should not function as a philosophical password.

04 · A Practical Example

How Different Paradigms Can Change the Study of the Same Topic

Hypothetical Example

Studying AI Use Among University Students

Suppose several researchers are interested in generative AI use among university students. They share a broad topic, but their underlying assumptions and purposes lead them toward different research questions.

Postpositivist orientation A researcher asks whether frequency of AI use predicts academic performance after accounting for prior achievement and other measured variables. The study emphasizes measurement, empirical testing, uncertainty, alternative explanations, and cautious inference.
Interpretive or constructivist orientation A researcher asks how students understand the boundary between legitimate AI assistance and academic misconduct. The study focuses on participants' meanings and how those meanings are shaped by disciplinary and institutional contexts.
Pragmatist orientation A researcher asks what combination of evidence would help a university develop an effective and workable AI-support policy. Surveys, interviews, administrative data, or other methods may be combined according to the problem and the consequences of the inquiry.
Critical realist orientation A researcher asks what mechanisms explain why access to AI tools improves learning for some students but not others, and under what institutional or educational conditions those mechanisms operate.
Transformative or critical orientation A researcher investigates whether institutional AI policies disproportionately disadvantage particular groups and includes questions about power, participation, access, representation, and institutional change.

The example does not mean each paradigm mechanically generates one type of question or method. Researchers within the same broad paradigm can disagree substantially, and similar methods may appear across these studies.

What changes is the logic of inquiry: what the researcher treats as the problem, what kind of knowledge is sought, what evidence becomes important, how the researcher understands their relationship to the inquiry, and what conclusions the study is intended to support.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About Research Paradigms

Misconception

Is a Research Paradigm Just Another Name for a Research Design?

No. A paradigm concerns broad assumptions about knowledge and inquiry. A research design organizes how a particular study will answer its research question. The two can be related, but an experiment, case study, survey, ethnography, or sequential mixed-methods design is not itself equivalent to a philosophical paradigm.

Misconception

Does Quantitative Mean Positivist and Qualitative Mean Interpretivist?

Not necessarily. These pairings describe familiar historical associations, not mandatory relationships. Quantitative research can be conducted within postpositivist, pragmatic, critical realist, transformative, and other orientations. Qualitative research likewise occurs within interpretive, constructivist, critical, realist, pragmatic, and other traditions.

Misconception

Does Mixed Methods Automatically Mean Pragmatism?

No. Pragmatism has been highly influential in mixed-methods scholarship, but it is not the only philosophical foundation available. Mixed-methods researchers have debated compatibility, dialectical approaches, critical realism, transformative frameworks, and other philosophical possibilities. The philosophical rationale should fit the study rather than be inferred from the mere presence of both numerical and qualitative evidence.

Misconception

Do You Choose a Paradigm From a List and Then Follow Its Rules?

That approach can turn philosophy into a classification exercise. Paradigms are intellectual traditions containing debates, variations, and sometimes competing interpretations. Start with the assumptions and purposes of your research, then determine which philosophical framework most coherently expresses them. A label is useful only if you understand what you mean by it.

Misconception

Do You Need to Explain Every Philosophical Concept in Your Methodology?

No. The amount of philosophical explanation should be proportionate to the study, disciplinary expectations, and the role those assumptions play in your methodology. A thesis with an explicitly interpretive or critical methodology may require substantial philosophical justification. Another empirical study may need considerably less. The goal is methodological clarity, not demonstrating that you have read every branch of epistemology.

Misconception

Is One Paradigm More Scientific Than All the Others?

That question assumes a single uncontested definition of science and knowledge. Paradigms differ partly because they make different philosophical claims about what can be known and how inquiry should proceed. They should therefore be evaluated in relation to the research problem, knowledge claims, methodology, and standards of the relevant scholarly tradition rather than arranged on a simple hierarchy of seriousness.

How Much Should Your Research Paradigm Actually Influence Your Study?

Begin with your research problem rather than with a favorite philosophical label. Ask what you are trying to know, what kind of phenomenon you think you are investigating, what evidence could reasonably address the question, and what claims you hope to make.

Then examine the assumptions underneath those answers.

This approach avoids two extremes. The first is ignoring philosophical assumptions entirely. The second is spending so much time classifying yourself as a positivist, constructivist, pragmatist, realist, or something else that the actual research problem disappears beneath the terminology.

A simple decision framework

If your methodology explicitly depends on particular philosophical assumptions
Identify and justify those assumptions clearly enough for the reader to understand how they shape the study.
If your discipline or thesis guidelines expect a paradigm or research philosophy
Use terminology recognized in that literature and explain how the position relates to your actual methodological decisions.
If several paradigms appear compatible with your methods
Look beyond the methods. Compare their assumptions, purposes, logic of inquiry, and the kinds of claims each would support.
If you are using quantitative and qualitative methods together
Do not assume pragmatism by default. Consider the philosophical rationale for integration and whether paradigmatic compatibility is relevant to your particular design.
If you cannot explain how the paradigm affects anything in your study
Reconsider whether the label is necessary, whether you understand it sufficiently, or whether your methodological explanation should focus on more consequential assumptions.

You also do not necessarily need to choose a paradigm before choosing every research method. Research planning can be iterative. Questions, theory, philosophical assumptions, methodological strategy, feasibility, and methods can inform one another as the design develops.

What ultimately matters is coherence. Your philosophical position should not promise one conception of knowledge while your methodology quietly operates according to another without explanation.

Before naming or explaining your research paradigm, check:
Can I explain what I am trying to know without relying on philosophical jargon?
What assumptions am I making about the phenomenon or reality I am investigating?
What do I regard as credible knowledge or evidence for answering this research question?
How do my philosophical assumptions relate to the methodology and methods I intend to use?
Am I treating quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods as though each automatically belongs to one paradigm?
Have I checked how authoritative methodological literature in my discipline defines the paradigm I am using?
Can I explain why this philosophical position fits my study rather than merely define it?
Are my research question, knowledge claims, methodology, methods, and interpretation reasonably coherent with one another?
Have I explained only the philosophical concepts that readers genuinely need to understand my research?

Whether a substantive change in research paradigm is coherent depends on what has already been designed or conducted and whether the resulting methodology and claims remain defensible.

How much research philosophy should I explain in a thesis?

Explain enough to justify the assumptions that materially shape your research. The appropriate depth varies by discipline, methodology, and institutional expectations. A useful philosophy section connects assumptions to methodological decisions rather than becoming a detached history of philosophical schools.

You do not need to memorize every philosophical school or force your study into a rigid paradigm-method pairing. Learn enough philosophy to recognize the assumptions that matter, use terminology carefully because classifications vary across the literature, and make those assumptions explicit when they genuinely help readers understand why your research was conducted the way it was.
