Your Problem and Question Both Look Reasonable, but Do They Investigate the Same Thing?
A research problem can be clearly written. A research question can also be focused, researchable, and interesting. Yet those two strengths do not necessarily mean that they belong together.
This becomes particularly important when a proposal develops over several rounds of revision. You may refine the research questions after reading more literature, change the population because of feasibility, narrow the setting, or become interested in a different relationship. The problem statement, however, may remain largely unchanged. Eventually, the study can contain individually plausible components that no longer describe the same inquiry.
The practical test is therefore not whether the problem and question use similar terminology. It is whether answering the research question would actually help resolve, explain, describe, or otherwise investigate the problem you established .
03 · What You Need to Know
Trace the Logic From “Why This Study?” to “What Must We Find Out?”
The research problem and research question perform different functions. The problem establishes why an investigation is warranted. The question specifies what the investigation will attempt to find out.
That distinction also explains their required relationship. A research question should not merely concern the same broad topic as the problem. It should operationalize the inquiry intellectually by identifying what must be investigated in order to address some meaningful aspect of that problem.
Start by identifying the actual problem, not just the topic
A topic is an area of interest: artificial intelligence in higher education, teacher burnout, online learning, vaccine hesitancy, or academic writing. A research problem is more specific. It identifies something about that topic that is insufficiently understood, unresolved, contradictory, problematic, or in need of investigation.
For example, “generative AI in university assessment” identifies a topic. A problem might instead be that an institution has introduced guidance permitting certain forms of generative AI use, but little is known about how instructors interpret the boundary between permitted assistance and academically inappropriate use when designing assessments.
Once the problem is that specific, the research question has somewhere to go.
Ask what knowledge the problem makes necessary
A useful way to move from problem to question is to identify what is currently unknown and what kind of knowledge would reduce that uncertainty.
If the problem is that little is known about how instructors interpret a policy , a question about instructors' interpretations may fit. If the problem is that two teaching approaches have uncertain comparative effects on student achievement, a comparative question may fit. If the problem concerns mechanisms explaining why an intervention works differently across contexts, simply asking whether participants liked the intervention probably does not fit.
This is where research alignment becomes more than terminological consistency . The question should represent an investigative response to the problem rather than merely remain within the same subject area.
Compare the substantive elements of the problem and question
When checking alignment, examine the major elements carried by each statement. Depending on the study, these may include the phenomenon, constructs or variables, population, context, relationships, processes, outcomes, and time frame.

Not every element must appear verbatim in both places. Some contextual details can be established elsewhere in the study. What matters is that the substantive meaning remains compatible.
The strongest test is consequential: what would the answer accomplish?
Imagine that the study has been completed and the research question has been answered convincingly. Return to the problem statement.
Does the new knowledge address the uncertainty or issue that justified the study?
If yes, there is a plausible problem-question connection. If not, you may have discovered a mismatch.
This counterfactual test is useful because superficial alignment can survive word-by-word comparison. Two passages may mention the same population and constructs while seeking fundamentally different knowledge.
Topical similarity
The problem and question concern the same general subject.
Substantive alignment
The knowledge requested by the question responds to the specific uncertainty or issue established by the problem.
Watch for changes in the type of claim being pursued
One subtle source of mismatch occurs when the problem establishes one kind of uncertainty but the question asks another kind of question.
Suppose the problem argues that little is known about why students disengage from an online course. A question asking, “What percentage of students complete the course?” provides descriptive information, but it does not explain why disengagement occurs.
Likewise, if the problem concerns whether two variables are associated, a purely descriptive question about their individual levels does not directly investigate that relationship. If the problem concerns effectiveness, a question about perceptions of usefulness is not automatically equivalent.
Words such as what , how , why , relationship , difference , effect , and experience signal different evidentiary demands. The precise formulation of the question therefore matters.
A question can be too broad or too narrow for its problem
Alignment also involves scope. A narrowly established problem cannot automatically justify a sweeping question.
If the literature establishes an unresolved issue among first-year engineering students at one type of institution, a question about all university students may require a broader rationale. Conversely, an expansive problem concerning institutional adoption of a technology may not be adequately addressed by a question limited to one minor procedural feature unless the rationale explains why that feature is consequential.
Neither breadth nor narrowness is inherently wrong. The issue is whether the scope of the question follows defensibly from the scope of the problem.
Several research questions can legitimately arise from one problem
Alignment does not require one problem statement for every research question. A sufficiently complex problem may generate several related questions examining different dimensions of the same inquiry.
For instance, a problem concerning faculty adoption of a new educational technology might justify questions about patterns of adoption, factors influencing adoption, and how instructors describe barriers to implementation. The questions differ, but they may collectively investigate the established problem.
The danger arises when secondary questions accumulate because the researcher has access to additional variables or finds other topics interesting. Every added question expands the study's intellectual obligations. If you cannot explain how a question contributes to investigating the problem, it may not belong.
Watch Out
Do not manufacture a problem statement merely to justify a question you have already decided to ask. Working backward can be legitimate during iterative research design, but the resulting problem must be supported by the literature and context. A convenient question does not create evidence that a corresponding research problem exists.

Test the Connection Before You Move Deeper Into Research Design
Read the problem and research questions together, preferably without the intervening pages of literature review. Then try to explain their connection in ordinary language.
A simple problem-question alignment test
If the problem says something important is unknown
Identify exactly which question will generate knowledge about that unknown.
If the problem concerns a relationship, process, experience, difference, or effect
Check whether the question investigates that same type of phenomenon rather than a nearby one.
If the population or context changes between the two
Determine whether the change is justified or whether the study has drifted.
If answering a question would not materially address the established problem
Revise, remove, or justify the question rather than keeping it merely because it is interesting.
Once that connection is defensible, continue along the alignment chain. A question that fits the problem can still fail if the study cannot generate the evidence required to answer it . Problem-question alignment is therefore necessary, but it is only one connection within the larger architecture of the study.

Do Your Research Problem and Research Question Pass the Alignment Test?
Before finalizing your research questions, check:
Can you state the actual research problem without describing only the broad topic?
Can you identify the specific uncertainty, gap, contradiction, or issue that requires investigation?
Does each research question request knowledge that contributes to investigating that problem?
Are the central concepts, population, context, and scope compatible where those elements matter?
Does the type of question match the type of uncertainty established by the problem?
If you answered every research question completely, would the findings meaningfully address the problem?
Can you justify every secondary question as part of the same inquiry rather than as an interesting addition?
If the question has changed during development, have you revisited the problem statement and supporting literature?
