Your Framework Looks Relevant, but Does It Actually Help With the Question?
Researchers often choose a theory or conceptual framework because it is well known in their field, appears frequently in related studies, or contains concepts that resemble the variables or phenomena they intend to investigate. Those are reasonable starting points. They are not, by themselves, evidence that the framework fits the study.
The harder question is what happens after the framework has been selected. Does it influence what you ask? Does it clarify what the central concepts mean? Does it suggest relationships, mechanisms, processes, or perspectives that matter to the inquiry? Does it inform what evidence you collect or how you interpret what you find?
If the framework can be removed from the study without changing any important research decision, it may be present only nominally. A genuinely useful framework should perform identifiable intellectual work.
03 · What You Need to Know
Ask What the Framework Allows You to See, Explain, or Investigate
A framework is sometimes treated as an obligatory section of a thesis rather than as part of the reasoning of the study. That can produce an odd pattern: several pages carefully explain a theory, a diagram presents boxes and arrows, and then the research questions, methods, analysis, and discussion proceed almost as if the framework had never appeared.
That is precisely the situation an alignment check is meant to expose.
First clarify what kind of framework you are using
The terms theoretical framework and conceptual framework are not used identically across disciplines or methodological traditions. Some authors distinguish them sharply. Others use the terms more flexibly or treat conceptual frameworks as capable of incorporating theories alongside empirical literature, prior findings, assumptions, and study-specific concepts.
For example, Grant and Osanloo describe theoretical frameworks as structures that can guide choices across dissertation research, including research questions and analysis. More recent guidance in health professions education similarly treats a conceptual framework as a researcher-developed argument that can connect the knowledge gap, research question, methodology, data collection, and analysis.
Rather than assuming that one definition applies universally, establish how your field and methodological tradition use the term. Then evaluate the framework according to the role you claim it performs.
A useful framework should illuminate something central to the question
Start with the research question rather than the framework's reputation.
What phenomenon, process, construct, relationship, experience, mechanism, or outcome does the question ask you to investigate? Then ask what the framework contributes to understanding it.
A useful framework might:
- define or distinguish important constructs;
- propose relationships among constructs;
- identify mechanisms through which an outcome might occur;
- direct attention toward particular dimensions of a phenomenon;
- provide concepts for interpreting participants' experiences or social processes;
- suggest conditions under which relationships may differ;
- help organize the evidence or findings.
These roles are not interchangeable, and a framework need not perform all of them. The point is that you should be able to identify what it contributes.
Trace concepts from the question into the framework, but do not rely on keyword matching
Suppose your question asks whether students' confidence in performing a task influences their persistence when encountering difficulty. A framework that explicitly theorizes beliefs about capability and their relationship to persistence has an obvious conceptual connection.
But alignment requires more than locating similar nouns. You need to examine whether the construct in the framework means what you intend it to mean.
For example, engagement, motivation, acceptance, self-efficacy, satisfaction, and intention may overlap in ordinary language while representing distinct constructs theoretically. Replacing one with another because they sound related can alter the conceptual logic of the study.
Terminological match
The framework and research question use similar words.

The constructs and relationships used in the question correspond to what the framework actually defines, proposes, or helps explain.
Ask whether the framework shapes the question or helps make sense of it
The relationship between theory and research questions can work in different directions. In some studies, theory precedes and substantially shapes the question. In others, researchers begin with a substantive problem and later identify theoretical resources that help sharpen or interpret the inquiry. Qualitative research can be particularly iterative in this respect. Agee notes that theory may shape research questions and methodological decisions as a study develops rather than functioning as a purely mechanical starting point.
What matters is that the relationship can be explained.
If your framework predicts or explains a relationship, a question may test, examine, refine, or extend that proposition. If the framework provides an interpretive lens, the question may concern a phenomenon that the framework helps you understand. If the framework organizes several concepts drawn from the literature, it may clarify what dimensions of the phenomenon deserve investigation.
Different roles can be legitimate. An unexplained role is the problem.
The framework may influence more than the wording of the research question
Framework-question alignment becomes easier to evaluate when you follow the framework beyond the question itself.
A well-integrated framework may influence the selection of constructs, hypotheses, cases, measures, interview prompts, observations, coding categories, analytical comparisons, or interpretation of findings. Guidance from the University of Melbourne, for example, describes conceptual frameworks as lenses that may guide a research question and may also help researchers analyze and discuss their data.
Likewise, contemporary methodological discussions emphasize connections among conceptual frameworks, research questions, methodological choices, and methods.
This does not mean every method must be dictated by theory. It means that when you claim a framework organizes the inquiry, readers should be able to see evidence of that influence somewhere in the design or interpretation.
Ask whether the framework explains too little
A framework may be relevant but insufficient.
Suppose your research question investigates both individual beliefs and institutional conditions affecting faculty adoption of an educational technology. A framework concerned almost exclusively with individual intention may illuminate part of the question while providing little conceptual support for institutional policy, infrastructure, workload, or organizational culture.
That does not automatically make the framework unusable. You might narrow the question, explain the framework's intentionally limited role, extend the conceptual model using well-supported constructs, or combine theoretical perspectives when doing so is conceptually justified.
The mistake is claiming that one framework explains the entire inquiry when substantial parts lie outside its conceptual territory.
A framework can also be too large for the question
The reverse problem occurs when researchers reproduce an entire theory even though their study investigates only a small portion of it.
A theory may contain numerous constructs, stages, propositions, or contextual conditions. Your study does not necessarily need to examine all of them. What matters is whether you can justify which parts are relevant to your question and whether using only those parts preserves the meaning of the framework.
This issue becomes especially important when deciding which parts of a conceptual framework the study actually needs to examine. Selective use can be defensible, but silent omission of theoretically important components may distort the theory.
The framework should not dictate findings in advance
Alignment does not mean forcing the data to agree with the framework.
A theory provides expectations, concepts, or interpretive possibilities. Empirical findings may support those expectations, complicate them, reveal boundary conditions, or conflict with them. A qualitative analysis may also surface important patterns that were not anticipated by the initial framework.
This is especially important when researchers use frameworks deductively. If every observation is forced into predetermined categories, theoretically unexpected evidence can disappear from the analysis. Conversely, claiming to use an inductive approach while imposing a comprehensive a priori framework may require careful methodological justification.
A framework earns its place by helping researchers think, not by guaranteeing what they will find.
The framework must fit the research tradition as well as the topic
Two studies can investigate the same topic while using frameworks differently because their purposes differ.

These are illustrative possibilities rather than a universal taxonomy. Framework use varies considerably among disciplines, paradigms, and methodologies.
Watch Out
Do not choose a framework simply because it has been used frequently in studies on your topic. Prior use establishes relevance worth considering, not automatic fit. Read the original theory or authoritative accounts closely enough to understand its constructs, assumptions, scope, and intended explanatory role before building your study around it.
06 · What This Means for You
Use the “Removal Test” to See Whether Your Framework Matters
One useful diagnostic is surprisingly simple: mentally remove the framework from the study.
Would anything important change?
If your research question would be identical, your constructs would be defined the same way, your measures or data collection would be unchanged, your analysis would proceed identically, and your interpretation would make no reference to the framework's concepts, then its contribution may be largely decorative.
The removal test is not an absolute methodological rule. Some frameworks exert their strongest influence at particular stages rather than throughout every component. Still, it forces you to articulate what the framework actually contributes.
A simple framework-question fit test
If the framework defines central constructs
Check whether the question uses those constructs consistently with their theoretical meanings.
If the framework proposes relationships
Determine whether the question or hypotheses actually investigate relevant relationships.
If the framework provides an interpretive lens
Explain how its concepts will inform what you attend to or how you make sense of the evidence.
If large parts of the question lie outside the framework
Narrow the question, limit the framework's claimed role, extend the conceptual foundation, or justify another perspective.
If removing the framework changes nothing important
Reconsider whether it genuinely belongs in the study.
This is one connection within broader research alignment. Even an excellent conceptual fit does not guarantee that your methods can generate the evidence required by the question. Framework, question, evidence, methods, and analysis still need to work together.
