Think of Scope as the Study's Investigative Territory
A research topic can usually support far more questions than a single study can answer. "Artificial intelligence in higher education," for example, could lead to research on student learning, faculty practices, assessment, academic integrity, institutional policy, accessibility, administrative work, or dozens of other concerns. It could be studied internationally or within one classroom, across decades or during one semester.
The scope tells readers which portion of that larger territory your study occupies.
Research questions themselves often become empirically meaningful by identifying the variables, relationships, populations, situations, experiences, or other phenomena being investigated. Researchers also have to consider whether a question is feasible given constraints such as time, resources, technical capability, and access to participants. The resulting study therefore has boundaries rather than encompassing the entire topic.
Population or participants: Who or what does the study concern?
For research involving people, the scope often identifies the population or participant group relevant to the research question. A population is the broader group about which the researcher is interested in drawing conclusions, while a sample is the subset actually studied.
Suppose the topic is student use of generative AI. "Students" may still be too broad to describe the study accurately. Does the research concern senior high school students, first-year university students, doctoral candidates, or students enrolled in a particular discipline?
The appropriate population boundary should follow from the research question rather than from a desire to make the study sound comprehensive. If the inquiry concerns first-year adjustment to university, first-year students may be the relevant population. Adding students from every year level merely enlarges the study unless their inclusion serves the research purpose.
Watch Out
Do not use population and sample as though they were interchangeable. The population identifies the larger group of interest; the sample consists of the cases actually selected or observed from that population. Your methodology should explain the sampling process in the detail appropriate to your design.
Setting or place: Where does the inquiry occur?
Place can define the scope when location or setting matters to the phenomenon. This may be geographical, such as a country, province, city, or community, but it can also be institutional or organizational: a university, hospital, school system, workplace, online community, or another bounded environment.
A setting is not merely an address. Context may influence what is observed. Research conducted within one private university, for instance, occurs within institutional conditions that may differ from those of public universities or other educational systems.
Not every study requires a narrow geographic boundary. A secondary-data study may analyze records drawn from several countries. A systematic review may not have a single research site at all. An online study may be bounded by a platform or community rather than a physical location.
Timeframe: What period does the study cover?
Some research questions require an explicit temporal boundary. A study may investigate events during one semester, policies introduced between specified years, publications within a defined period, or participant experiences during a particular stage of an intervention.
The relevant timeframe is the period covered by the phenomenon or evidence, not automatically the months during which the researcher happens to work on the project.
For example, if you analyze university policies issued from 2023 through 2026 but conduct the analysis in 2027, the substantive scope concerns the 2023–2026 policy period. "January to May 2027" may describe your research schedule, but it does not necessarily define what the study investigates.
Variables, constructs, or relationships: What exactly are you examining?
In many quantitative studies, scope is partly defined by the variables or constructs being investigated and the relationships among them. A variable is a characteristic or quantity that can vary across people or situations.
Consider a study of academic performance. That phrase alone leaves enormous room for interpretation. A focused investigation might examine the relationship between self-regulated learning and academic performance, or test whether a particular instructional intervention affects a specified learning outcome.
Defining these substantive boundaries prevents readers from assuming that the study investigates every plausible factor related to the outcome.
This does not mean the scope section should reproduce operational definitions, instruments, statistical models, or the complete analysis plan. Those details belong where your reporting format places the methodology. Scope identifies what is substantively inside the inquiry; methodology explains how the inquiry is conducted.
Phenomenon or experience: Qualitative scope may not revolve around variables
Variables are not the organizing unit of every research approach. A qualitative study may instead be bounded around an experience, process, practice, culture, event, case, interaction, or meaning-making phenomenon.
An interview study might explore how novice teachers experience the adoption of generative AI in lesson planning. An ethnographic inquiry might examine technology practices within a particular learning community. A case study might investigate the implementation of a digital-learning initiative within a bounded institutional case.
Trying to force such studies into a "variables" template can misrepresent the methodology. The scope should use concepts appropriate to the research approach.
Context: Under what conditions is the phenomenon being studied?
Sometimes population and place still do not tell readers enough. The study may be bounded by an educational level, organizational environment, policy condition, technological platform, disciplinary context, program, event, or other circumstance that materially shapes the inquiry.
For example, "faculty members at universities in Manila" describes a population and location. "Faculty members using institutionally approved generative AI tools for undergraduate assessment" introduces a more specific substantive context.
Context should be included when removing it would materially change what the research question means.
Unit of analysis: What exactly is being analyzed?
Not all research studies analyze individual people. Depending on the question, the units being analyzed might be classrooms, schools, organizations, countries, publications, policies, social-media posts, recorded interactions, documents, or other entities.
Identifying the relevant unit can be important when readers might otherwise misunderstand what the findings describe. A bibliometric study of research articles, for example, has a fundamentally different scope from a survey of the researchers who wrote those articles.
Evidence or source boundaries: What material counts as part of the inquiry?
Studies based on documents, archives, databases, media, or existing records may need to specify what kinds of evidence fall within scope.
A content analysis might examine peer-reviewed journal articles in a defined database and period. A policy study might analyze official national policy documents while excluding institutional guidelines. An archival study might define the particular collection or type of historical record being examined.
These evidence boundaries can be as important as participant boundaries in primary empirical research.
Not every study needs every possible scope element
A common mistake is to treat population, place, time, variables, and context as five mandatory boxes that every scope statement must fill. They are better understood as questions that help researchers identify relevant boundaries.

A useful scope contains enough information to establish the study's territory without becoming a catalogue of every methodological decision. A more detailed treatment of population, place, time, variables, and context can help when deciding which of these commonly encountered boundaries needs to be stated explicitly.
Scope is not the same as methodology
Because scope describes what a study covers, researchers sometimes begin placing the entire research plan inside it. That usually obscures rather than clarifies the boundary.
Scope
Defines the territory being investigated: the relevant population, phenomenon, setting, period, variables, context, cases, or evidence.
Methodology
Explains how the research is designed and conducted, including procedures for sampling, measurement or data generation, analysis, and other methodological decisions.
There can be overlap because some methodological choices establish substantive boundaries. Still, the distinction is useful. Saying that the study concerns first-year nursing students defines part of its scope. Explaining how those students were recruited, how many participated, which instrument they completed, and which statistical procedures were used belongs primarily to the methodology.
Scope is also different from delimitations and limitations
Scope describes what is inside the study. Delimitations concern boundaries deliberately established by the researcher, while limitations concern weaknesses, constraints, or methodological conditions affecting what the evidence can support.
The concepts can intersect. If researchers intentionally restrict a study to first-year students, that population forms part of the scope and the deliberate restriction is also a delimitation. If recruitment problems then produce a sample that inadequately represents important segments of the intended population, that may create a limitation.
Keeping scope, delimitations, and limitations conceptually separate prevents the scope from turning into a list of weaknesses or exclusions.
Your research question should determine the important boundaries
The strongest way to determine scope is to work outward from the research question. Ask what evidence would actually be needed to answer it and what population, phenomenon, setting, period, variables, cases, or context the answer refers to.
If an element has no meaningful connection to the question, adding it merely because a template mentions it can make the scope unnecessarily mechanical.
The reverse problem is more serious. If your research question concerns a population, context, or period that your study cannot realistically cover, the scope and question are misaligned. At that point, the issue may be whether you need to narrow the study to a feasible and defensible territory.
