Scope vs. Delimitations vs. Limitations: What’s the Difference?

Scope describes what your study covers, delimitations are boundaries you deliberately set, and limitations are constraints or weaknesses that affect what your study can establish. Learn how to tell them apart without treating every boundary as a flaw.

01 · The Question

Why Are Scope, Delimitations, and Limitations So Easy to Confuse?

A study focuses on university students from one institution, excludes postgraduate students, uses self-reported survey data, and obtains fewer responses than expected. Which of these describes the scope? Which is a delimitation? Which is a limitation?

The confusion is understandable because all three concepts concern the boundaries of research. They do not, however, describe the same kind of boundary. Scope tells readers what the study covers. Delimitations identify boundaries deliberately established through research decisions. Limitations identify constraints, weaknesses, or conditions that may affect what can reasonably be concluded from the study.

The distinction matters because describing an intentional design choice as a limitation can make a defensible study appear unnecessarily weak. The reverse problem is more consequential: presenting a genuine methodological limitation as though it were simply an intentional boundary can obscure something readers need to consider when interpreting the findings.

02 · The Short Answer

The Difference Comes Down to Coverage, Choice, and Constraint

In Brief

Scope is what your study covers; delimitations are the boundaries you deliberately set when deciding what the study will and will not cover; limitations are weaknesses, constraints, or conditions that may affect the study or the conclusions you can draw from it.

A useful starting question is whether you are describing the study's coverage, a deliberate research decision, or a constraint affecting the research. The categories can be closely related, so the reason a boundary exists often matters more than the boundary itself.

03 · What You Need to Know

How Scope, Delimitations, and Limitations Describe Different Parts of the Same Study

Scope describes the territory your study actually covers

The scope defines the extent and coverage of the research. It tells readers what falls inside the study rather than everything that could conceivably be investigated about the topic.

Depending on the research question and methodology, the scope may specify the population or participants, setting, geographical area, time period, phenomena or variables, and contextual boundaries relevant to the inquiry. Exactly what the scope needs to specify depends on the study rather than on a universal checklist.

Suppose you are examining the relationship between academic self-efficacy and online learning engagement among first-year university students at one institution during a particular academic year. Those parameters describe the territory occupied by the study. They tell readers what was investigated, among whom, where, and within what context.

Scope is therefore primarily descriptive. It answers a question such as: What exactly does this research cover?

Delimitations are boundaries created by deliberate research decisions

A delimitation arises when researchers deliberately draw a boundary around the inquiry. Delimitations are built into the conceptual or methodological design of the study. They may concern which population to investigate, which variables or phenomena to include, which setting to examine, which period to cover, or which theoretical perspective to adopt.

For example, researchers might decide to investigate only first-year students because the research question concerns adjustment to university. Postgraduate students are therefore outside the study, not because researchers accidentally failed to reach them, but because they were never part of the population relevant to the question.

This is why a delimitation is not automatically a weakness. Research requires selection. A study that deliberately focuses on one theoretically relevant population may be methodologically stronger than a study that includes several poorly justified populations simply to appear broader. The important issue is whether the boundary is coherent with the research question and whether its consequences are acknowledged.

When the exclusion itself requires further justification, the central issue is whether the researcher can defend excluding a population or variable methodologically, rather than merely asserting that it was outside the study.

Limitations affect what the study can establish or how confidently findings can be interpreted

A limitation is a weakness, constraint, or condition that affects the research and may qualify the strength, precision, credibility, transferability, generalizability, or interpretation of its findings. Limitations may arise from circumstances beyond the researcher's control, but they can also be inherent in a chosen design or method.

That last point deserves emphasis because the popular rule that "delimitations are controllable and limitations are uncontrollable" is useful for beginners but can become too simplistic. A researcher may deliberately choose a self-report survey, for example. Choosing the survey is a methodological decision. Yet susceptibility to recall error or social desirability bias may still be a limitation of the resulting measurement. Similarly, choosing a cross-sectional design is intentional, but the design's inability to establish temporal ordering may constrain causal interpretation.

The better distinction is therefore not simply choice versus no choice. Ask what the statement is doing. A delimitation explains where and why the researcher drew a boundary. A limitation explains what constrains the evidence or what readers should keep in mind when interpreting it.

Scope The coverage of the study: what is being investigated and within what boundaries.
Delimitation A boundary deliberately established through the study's conceptual or methodological choices.
Limitation A weakness, constraint, or condition that may restrict the evidence, interpretation, or reach of the findings.

The same feature can appear in more than one discussion

This is where the terminology becomes more interesting than the tidy definitions suggest. Consider a study conducted at one university.

The study's scope may state that the research covers undergraduate students at that university. The decision to restrict the investigation to that institution may also be a delimitation if the researchers intentionally selected a single institutional context. Later, when interpreting the results, the authors may acknowledge that evidence from one institution provides a limited basis for extending the findings to students in substantially different institutional settings.

These statements are not necessarily contradictory. They answer different questions about the same design feature.

For this reason, trying to classify every sentence by looking for a particular noun such as "population," "location," or "sample" does not work very well. You need to understand why the feature exists and what claim is being made about it.

A deliberate exclusion is not automatically a limitation

Suppose a study investigates teachers' experiences with generative AI but deliberately excludes students because the research question concerns teachers' professional decision-making. The exclusion of students is a delimitation. It defines the inquiry.

Calling that exclusion a limitation simply because "students were not included" misses the methodological rationale. A study does not become deficient merely because it does not investigate every population connected with its topic. Indeed, knowing what to deliberately leave outside a study is part of designing a coherent research project.

However, if the manuscript subsequently claims to explain how all members of the university community experience generative AI, the problem changes. The evidence no longer supports the breadth of the claim. The issue is not that the original delimitation was inherently defective. The interpretation has simply travelled beyond the study's evidential boundary.

A limitation is not necessarily a mistake

Limitations are sometimes written as confessions: the sample was small, the study was short, the instrument was imperfect, and so forth. That framing can encourage researchers to treat a limitations section as an academic apology.

A more useful approach is analytical. Identify the relevant constraint, explain why it matters, and specify its likely consequence for interpretation. If appropriate, explain what was done to reduce its effect.

For example, "The study used self-reported engagement" is merely a description. A more informative limitation explains that self-reported engagement may differ from observed behavior or platform-recorded activity, so the findings concern participants' reported engagement rather than an objective behavioral measure.

Watch Out

Do not assume that every narrow feature of a study is evidence of poor research. A focused population, setting, timeframe, or set of variables may be a defensible delimitation. The relevant question is whether the boundary is justified and whether the conclusions remain inside it.

Terminology and placement can vary

Universities, disciplines, journals, and methodology texts do not always organize these concepts identically. Some theses combine "Scope and Delimitations" in one section. Others discuss limitations separately, often later in the manuscript. Some institutional templates use "scope and limitations" more broadly even when they also describe deliberate exclusions.

That variation means you should follow the terminology and structure required by your institution, department, supervisor, or target journal while preserving the underlying conceptual distinction. A heading cannot rescue muddled reasoning, unfortunately, however much academics may wish headings possessed such powers.

If you are preparing the section itself rather than simply distinguishing the terminology, the next task is to define the scope and delimitations clearly and justify the important boundaries.

04 · A Practical Example

How the Three Concepts Look in One Research Project

Hypothetical Example

A study of generative AI use among university students

Imagine a researcher investigating the relationship between generative AI use for academic tasks and self-regulated learning among first-year undergraduate students at one private university. The study uses an online questionnaire administered during one semester.

Scope The study covers first-year undergraduate students at the selected university, their reported use of generative AI for academic tasks, and measures related to self-regulated learning during the specified semester.
Delimitation The researcher deliberately excludes postgraduate students and students from other institutions because the study is specifically concerned with the experiences of students transitioning into undergraduate university study within one institutional context.
Limitation The study relies on self-reported generative AI use. Participants may not remember their use precisely or may report behavior differently because the topic concerns academically sensitive practices. The measure therefore may not perfectly represent actual AI-use behavior.
Interpretation The researcher can draw conclusions about the relationships observed within the defined study and measurement conditions, but should not automatically treat those findings as evidence of actual platform-recorded AI use or assume that the same pattern applies to postgraduate students or students in substantially different institutions.

Notice that the single-institution setting is part of the study's scope and can reflect a deliberate delimitation. The potential measurement problem created by self-report is different: it affects how confidently the measured behavior can be interpreted. That is why classification depends on the function of the statement, not merely on the feature being discussed.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Distinguishing These Research Boundaries

Misconception

Are Scope and Delimitations Just Two Words for the Same Thing?

No. They are closely connected, which is why they are frequently presented together, but they perform different functions. Scope describes the coverage of the study. Delimitations explain boundaries created by deliberate decisions about that coverage. Saying that a study covers one city describes its scope; explaining why the inquiry was intentionally restricted to that city identifies a delimitation.

Misconception

Is Everything Excluded From the Study a Limitation?

No. Research necessarily excludes possibilities. A variable, population, location, method, or theoretical perspective deliberately excluded to maintain a coherent inquiry may be a delimitation rather than a limitation. Researchers should explain consequential exclusions when their rationale matters, but exclusion alone does not establish methodological weakness.

Misconception

Are Limitations Only Things Completely Outside Your Control?

Not always. The distinction is often taught that way because it separates unplanned constraints from intentional boundaries neatly. In practice, limitations can also arise from properties of a method or design the researcher knowingly selected. A cross-sectional design can be chosen deliberately while still limiting conclusions about temporal sequence. What matters is the consequence of the methodological feature for the evidence and its interpretation.

Misconception

Does a Narrow Scope Mean the Study Has Serious Limitations?

Not necessarily. Breadth is not a measure of research quality. A deliberately narrow scope can improve conceptual coherence, feasibility, measurement, and depth when it is aligned with the research question. The more relevant question is whether the study is narrow enough to be answerable without becoming unnecessarily restrictive.

Misconception

Should You List Every Possible Limitation?

No. A useful limitations discussion identifies constraints that materially affect how the methods, findings, or conclusions should be understood. Generic statements such as "the researcher had limited time" add little unless the time constraint actually affected recruitment, data collection, measurement, analysis, or another consequential part of the study.

How to Decide Whether Something Is Scope, a Delimitation, or a Limitation

When you encounter a boundary in your own research, resist the temptation to classify it by vocabulary alone. Instead, ask what the statement tells the reader.

A simple decision framework

If the statement explains what the study investigates, among whom, where, when, or within what substantive boundaries
Treat it primarily as part of the scope.
If the statement explains a boundary deliberately established through the research design, conceptual framing, inclusion criteria, or exclusion criteria
Treat it primarily as a delimitation and explain the rationale when it is consequential.
If the statement identifies a weakness, constraint, source of uncertainty, or methodological condition that affects what the evidence can support
Treat it primarily as a limitation and explain its consequence for interpretation.

You may occasionally find that the same design feature needs to be discussed from more than one perspective. That is acceptable. What matters is conceptual clarity. A geographic boundary can define the scope, result from a deliberate delimitation, and have consequences for how broadly findings can be applied.

The distinctions also help when a project begins to expand. If new populations, variables, or questions keep appearing, the problem may no longer be terminology but whether the study is trying to answer too much. Defining the boundaries explicitly makes such drift easier to recognize before it becomes embedded in data collection.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Check Whether You Have Classified Your Study Boundaries Correctly

Before finalizing your scope, delimitations, and limitations, check:
Can a reader tell exactly what population, phenomenon, variables, setting, period, or context your study covers where these are relevant?
Have you distinguished descriptions of the study's coverage from explanations of why particular boundaries were deliberately chosen?
For each claimed delimitation, can you explain the methodological, conceptual, or practical reason for drawing that boundary?
Have you avoided calling every excluded population, variable, location, or method a limitation?
For each important limitation, have you explained how it may affect measurement, validity, credibility, precision, generalizability, transferability, or interpretation as appropriate to your methodology?
Have you avoided listing generic weaknesses that have no meaningful consequence for the study?
Do your conclusions remain within the boundaries established by the study rather than extending to populations, settings, variables, or claims your evidence did not address?
Have you checked your institution's, department's, or target journal's requirements for where and how scope, delimitations, and limitations should be reported?

Frequently Asked Questions About Scope, Delimitations, and Limitations

What is the simplest difference between scope, delimitations, and limitations?

Scope tells readers what the study covers. Delimitations are boundaries deliberately established through research choices. Limitations are constraints, weaknesses, or methodological conditions that may affect the evidence or how the findings should be interpreted.

Is sample size a delimitation or a limitation?

It depends on why the sample has that size and what claim you are making about it. A deliberately defined sampling boundary may form part of the study design, while an unexpectedly small sample or inadequate statistical precision may constitute a limitation. Do not classify sample size automatically without considering its origin and methodological consequence.

Is studying only one school or university a delimitation or a limitation?

It can be discussed in more than one way. The institution is part of the study's scope, and deliberately restricting the study to that institution may be a delimitation. If the single-site context meaningfully restricts how broadly the findings can be applied, that consequence may also need to be acknowledged when discussing limitations or the boundaries of inference.

Is excluding a variable a limitation?

Not automatically. If the variable was deliberately excluded because it falls outside the research question or conceptual framework, the exclusion is generally a delimitation. It becomes methodologically concerning when omitting it creates a consequential problem for the analysis or the claims being made.

Are delimitations weaknesses of a study?

No. Delimitations are intentional boundaries, and all research requires boundaries. A delimitation may have consequences that deserve discussion, but a well-justified boundary can improve focus and methodological coherence rather than weaken the study.

Can a researcher's methodological choice create a limitation?

Yes. Choosing a method deliberately does not eliminate the method's constraints. Researchers may intentionally use self-report measures, a cross-sectional design, or a particular sampling strategy while still acknowledging the limitations those choices create for measurement or interpretation.

Do scope, delimitations, and limitations have to appear in separate sections?

No universal structure applies across all institutions and publication formats. Some documents combine scope and delimitations, while limitations may appear separately in the methodology or discussion. Follow the required format while keeping the underlying concepts clear.

The Bottom Line

Scope defines what your research covers, delimitations explain boundaries you deliberately establish around that inquiry, and limitations identify weaknesses, constraints, or conditions that affect what your evidence can support.

Do not classify a feature solely by whether it sounds restrictive. Ask why the boundary exists and what the statement is telling the reader. A narrow boundary may be a perfectly defensible delimitation, while even an intentional methodological choice can create limitations that should be acknowledged when interpreting the findings.
