If Someone Published a Similar Review Last Year, Should You Abandon Yours?
You develop what appears to be an important review question, run a preliminary search, and discover a systematic review with almost the same topic. Worse, it was published recently.
Has your project just disappeared?
Possibly, but not necessarily.
The age of an existing review is only one part of the decision. You need to determine whether it actually answers your question, whether it was conducted well enough to trust, when its literature search ended, whether important new evidence has appeared, and whether changes in methods, concepts, interventions, or context could alter the answer.
A review published six months ago can already be incomplete in a fast-moving field. A review several years old can remain sufficiently current when little relevant evidence has changed. There is no universal expiry date for evidence synthesis.

How to Decide Whether Another Review Is Actually Needed
First Determine Whether It Is Really the Same Question
Two reviews can have similar titles without answering the same question.
Compare the population, concept or intervention, comparator where relevant, outcomes, context, eligible study designs, time period, and intended synthesis. A review of artificial intelligence in higher education is not automatically equivalent to a review of generative AI feedback on university students' writing outcomes. A review of healthcare professionals may not answer a question about nursing students.
Differences should be substantive rather than manufactured. Narrowing the age range slightly or changing one search term does not necessarily create a meaningful new research question.
Check the Search Date, Not Just the Publication Date
This is one of the most important practical checks.
Systematic reviews take time to conduct, write, peer review, revise, and publish. A paper appearing in 2026 may have completed its final database search in 2024 or earlier. The review's publication year therefore does not tell you exactly how current its evidence base is.
Cochrane treats a systematic review as a snapshot of the evidence incorporated through its latest search and recommends considering new evidence when deciding whether an update is warranted.
When evaluating an existing review, find the date of its last search. Then investigate what has appeared since that date.
Publication date
When the completed review became publicly available.
Search date
The point through which the review attempted to identify eligible evidence. This is usually more informative when judging the currency of its evidence base.
There Is No Universal Expiry Date
You may encounter informal claims that systematic reviews should automatically be updated after a particular number of years. Current methodological guidance supports a more contextual decision.
Cochrane's updating framework emphasizes whether the review question remains important, whether new methods or evidence have appeared, and whether those developments are likely to affect the findings or credibility of the review.
Research on review-type selection similarly notes that currency depends on factors such as the pace of development in the field, importance and urgency of the question, and uncertainty in the existing evidence.
A mechanical age threshold is therefore a poor substitute for assessing what has actually changed.
Ask Whether New Evidence Could Change the Answer
The existence of one newly published study does not automatically justify a new systematic review. Neither does the existence of ten new papers if they are irrelevant, methodologically weak, or unlikely to alter the existing conclusions.
The stronger question is whether new evidence is sufficiently relevant and consequential that incorporating it could affect the review findings, certainty, applicability, or credibility.
Garner and colleagues' consensus guidance recommends considering whether new studies, new information from existing studies, or new methods are likely to influence the review enough to justify updating it.
Evaluate the Existing Review's Methodological Quality
A recent review is not automatically a good review.
Inspect whether the authors used appropriate eligibility criteria, searched suitable information sources, reported the search sufficiently, selected studies systematically, used appropriate appraisal methods, synthesized evidence defensibly, and interpreted the findings within their limitations.
If a recent review is seriously methodologically compromised, a new review may be justified even without a large volume of new primary evidence. The contribution is then not "the previous review is old" but "the available synthesis cannot reliably answer the question."
That claim should be demonstrated rather than asserted. Criticizing an earlier review simply to create publication space for another one is not much of a research gap.
Consider Whether an Update Is Better Than Starting Again
If a high-quality systematic review already answers the question but important new evidence has accumulated, an update may be more appropriate than pretending the earlier review does not exist.
Consensus guidance on systematic-review updating notes that updating is generally more efficient than starting the entire process again when new evidence emerges.
Whether you can formally update another team's review depends on practical and publication circumstances, but conceptually the distinction remains useful. Your project should acknowledge the existing synthesis and explain what has changed since it was conducted.
A Different Review Type Can Be Justified by a Different Question
Finding a recent systematic review does not necessarily eliminate a scoping review, qualitative evidence synthesis, or umbrella review if the new project asks a genuinely different question.
For example, a systematic review may estimate whether an intervention improves academic performance. A qualitative evidence synthesis might examine students' experiences of that intervention. A scoping review might map how the intervention has been implemented and studied across disciplines.
Those are not duplicate reviews merely because they concern the same intervention. Their objectives and evidence requirements differ.
Choosing among different review methodologies should therefore follow the question rather than a desire to evade an existing review.
A Broader Question May Call for an Umbrella Review
Sometimes the problem is not that one review already exists but that many systematic reviews do.
If several high-quality reviews address related aspects of a broader question, conducting yet another primary-study systematic review may duplicate substantial work. An umbrella review or overview of reviews may provide a more useful higher-level synthesis when review-level evidence is the appropriate unit of analysis.
Guidance on review-type selection likewise recognizes that an overview can be appropriate when multiple relevant systematic reviews collectively provide sufficiently comprehensive coverage.
Fast-Moving Fields Need a Different Concept of Currency
Evidence can age at very different rates. A mature theoretical topic may change slowly. A new medical intervention, emerging infectious disease, rapidly changing technology, or policy area may generate important studies within months.
This is one reason living systematic reviews have developed. A living systematic review continually incorporates newly emerging evidence and is particularly relevant when a question is important to decision-makers, new evidence is likely to appear frequently, and that evidence may affect the review's findings.
If a credible living review already covers your question and is being maintained appropriately, the justification for a parallel conventional review may be particularly weak unless your project has a substantively different purpose.
Novelty Can Come From Methods, but Methodological Novelty Needs a Reason
You might find a recent meta-analysis and believe another is warranted because you intend to use a different statistical model, risk-of-bias tool, search strategy, or inclusion criterion.
That can be legitimate when the methodological difference addresses an important limitation and could materially change interpretation. It is less persuasive when the change is merely cosmetic.
A new analysis should explain why the methodological difference matters scientifically. "We used newer software" is rarely enough. "The previous review treated multiple dependent effect sizes as independent, which could distort precision" is a substantive methodological concern.
Replication Can Be Legitimate, but Say That Is What You Are Doing
A deliberately independent replication of an important review can have scientific value, particularly when conclusions are consequential or methodological choices are contestable.
But replication is a different justification from novelty. If the objective is to test whether another review's findings are robust to an independently conducted evidence synthesis, state that purpose directly.
Do not manufacture a superficial research gap to disguise deliberate replication as an entirely unexplored question.

Watch Out
Do not justify a new review solely by writing that "no recent review has been published in the last five years." The meaningful question is whether the existing synthesis still provides a trustworthy and sufficiently current answer. Age can signal a need to investigate currency, but age alone does not establish a research gap.
