A Research Paper Contains Several Layers That Should Not Collapse Into One
Research papers do not contain only "facts." They contain research questions, observations, measurements, analyses, findings, interpretations, explanations, limitations, implications, and arguments. Your notes add another layer: your evaluation and synthesis.
Good source use therefore requires more than attaching a citation to a sentence. You need to preserve the relationship between what the source actually supports and what you are claiming on the basis of it.
First Separate What the Study Found From What the Authors Think It Means
In an empirical paper, results and interpretation are related but not identical.
Consider a hypothetical study reporting that students in an intervention group achieved higher post-test scores than students in a comparison group.
The finding might be recorded as:
Reported result: The intervention group had higher post-test scores than the comparison group under the study's specified analysis.
The authors might then argue:
Authors' interpretation: The intervention may have improved learning because it provided more frequent opportunities for formative feedback.
The first statement concerns the reported evidence. The second concerns what the authors believe may explain or mean that evidence.
Reported evidence or finding
What the study observed, measured, estimated, identified, or otherwise reported from its analysis.
Authors' interpretation
What the authors argue, infer, propose, explain, or conclude on the basis of that evidence.
The distinction matters because an interpretation may extend beyond what the study directly demonstrates. Authors may propose mechanisms that were not measured, discuss implications beyond the sampled population, or connect findings to theoretical explanations that remain open to alternatives.
That does not make the interpretation inappropriate. It simply means you should not silently transform an interpretive claim into an empirical result.
Then Separate Both of Those From Your Own Interpretation
You are not limited to repeating the authors' interpretation. Critical literature reviewing requires you to evaluate and connect evidence yourself.
After reading the same hypothetical study, you might write:
My interpretation: The difference may reflect feedback frequency, but the intervention also changed task structure, so the study does not isolate feedback frequency as the mechanism.
That is your analytical observation. It may be well reasoned, but the authors should not be made responsible for saying it if they did not.
Your notes therefore benefit from at least three conceptual layers:

Direct Quotations Need the Clearest Possible Provenance
If you copy the exact words of a source into your notes, mark them unmistakably as a quotation immediately.
Do not rely on remembering later that a sentence was copied verbatim.
Record the page number when stable pagination is available. For sources without conventional page numbers, preserve another useful locator when possible, such as a section, paragraph, table, figure, or other identifiable location.
The Publication Manual guidance provided by the American Psychological Association distinguishes direct quotations from paraphrases and requires authors to reproduce quoted material accurately and provide source location information appropriate to the source. Even if you eventually decide to paraphrase rather than quote, preserving the location while reading makes later verification much easier.
Watch Out
Do not paste source language into ordinary notes without quotation marks or another unmistakable marker. After enough editing and time, copied wording can become indistinguishable from your own prose, increasing the risk of accidental unattributed quotation.
A Paraphrase Is Still Source-Derived
Changing the wording does not make an idea yours.
If you restate an author's argument in your own words, the proposition still originates from that source and should remain attributed accordingly.
For example:
Source claim: The authors argue that students' ability to evaluate generated content should be treated as part of AI literacy.
Your paraphrase may use entirely different wording, but it remains a representation of the authors' argument.
This is why your note-taking system should identify provenance according to the origin of the idea, not according to whose vocabulary appears in the sentence.
Summary Also Requires Attribution
A summary compresses a larger part of a source into a shorter account. It is written in your words, but the ideas being summarized still belong to the source.
This distinction becomes particularly important in literature reviews because you may summarize an entire theoretical position, methodological argument, or sequence of findings in only a sentence or two.
Your note should therefore make clear that the summary represents your condensed account of the source rather than an independent claim you developed.
Your Evaluation Is Different From Your Interpretation of What the Authors Said
Another useful distinction is between understanding the source and evaluating it.
Suppose an author argues that a particular intervention is scalable because it requires little instructor involvement.
You might record:
Author claim: The intervention may be scalable because instructor involvement is limited.
Then:
My evaluation: The study did not examine implementation cost or institutional support, so scalability is suggested rather than demonstrated.
Your evaluation is not a paraphrase of the paper. It is your assessment of the relationship between the authors' claim and the evidence available to support it.
Preserving this distinction lets you engage critically without accidentally presenting your criticism as something acknowledged by the source.
Distinguish Author-Reported Limitations From Limitations You Identify
This issue appears frequently when researchers build literature matrices.
A column labeled simply Limitations may contain two quite different types of information:
- limitations explicitly acknowledged by the authors; and
- limitations you identify while evaluating the study.
Those should not silently merge.
Author-reported limitation
A constraint, weakness, or qualification explicitly acknowledged in the source.
Researcher evaluation
A limitation or concern you identify through your own critical appraisal of the study.
You may therefore find separate matrix fields such as Authors' limitations and My appraisal more useful than one ambiguous limitations column.
Keep Your Questions Separate Too
Not every thought you record needs to be a conclusion.
Useful analytical notes often contain questions:
Question: Would the same result appear if the comparison group received instructor feedback rather than no feedback?
Question: Are these two studies actually measuring the same construct?
Question: Could the apparent contradiction reflect differences in the population?
Marking these as questions prevents a tentative thought from gradually hardening into a claim simply because you wrote it in declarative prose.
Cross-Source Synthesis Is Another Distinct Layer
Once you compare several papers, you may reach an interpretation that appears in none of them individually.
Suppose:
- Study A reports a positive effect compared with no feedback;
- Study B reports no clear advantage compared with instructor feedback;
- Study C finds benefits primarily among lower-performing students; and
- Study D reports immediate improvement but not delayed retention.
You might synthesize:
Cross-source synthesis: The evidence suggests that the effectiveness of the intervention may depend on what it is compared against, which learners receive it, and which outcome or time point is examined.
No individual study necessarily says that. It is a proposition generated by comparing the evidence.
This is exactly the kind of intellectual contribution a literature review should make. But your notes should identify it as synthesis rather than quietly attributing it to one of the constituent papers.
Your Interpretation Should Remain Connected to the Evidence That Produced It
Labeling something My interpretation is useful, but it is not enough if you later forget why you reached that interpretation.
Connect analytical notes to the relevant source evidence.
For example:
My synthesis: Differences in comparison condition may explain some apparently inconsistent findings.
Basis: Studies A and B use no-feedback controls; Studies C and D compare the intervention with active instructor feedback.
Now the interpretation remains auditable. You can return to the underlying studies, verify the comparison conditions, and revise the synthesis if later evidence changes the pattern.
Use Simple Labels Consistently
You do not need an elaborate coding language. A small vocabulary may be enough:

QUOTE: exact wording from the source;

FINDING: evidence reported by the study;

AUTHOR: interpretation or argument made by the authors;

ME: your interpretation or evaluation;

SYNTHESIS: your interpretation across multiple sources; and

QUESTION: something you need to investigate further.
You can rename these labels. The important requirement is that you use them consistently enough that their meaning remains obvious months later.
A Literature Matrix Can Preserve These Layers Explicitly
If you use a matrix, avoid collapsing everything into one large Notes column.
You might instead maintain fields such as:

This builds the distinction directly into the structure of your literature matrix rather than depending on memory.
The Distinction Becomes More Important When Notes Are Organized by Idea
Paper-level notes naturally preserve some source context because everything in the note belongs to the same paper.
Idea-level notes remove that protection. A note about Trust in AI feedback might eventually contain material from fifteen papers alongside your own interpretation.
This is why a system that connects paper-level evidence with idea-level synthesis needs especially clear provenance markers.
Every source-derived entry should retain its citation. Important claims should retain source locators. Your own synthesis should remain visibly yours.
Do Not Confuse an Author's Citation With Evidence the Author Personally Produced
There is another provenance problem hidden inside research papers.
Suppose Paper A states:
Previous research has consistently found X.
Paper A may be summarizing Studies B, C, and D rather than reporting evidence from its own study.
If X matters to your review, determine whether you are using Paper A's synthesis or whether you need to examine the original studies themselves. Do not automatically record every claim appearing in a paper as a finding produced by that paper.
This distinction becomes especially important when you need to preserve the original source of an idea rather than allowing chains of secondary citation to obscure where the evidence originated.
