What surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observation actually give you
Before comparing techniques, remember the broader principle: you should choose a data collection method that fits the research question, rather than beginning with whichever technique is most familiar. The four methods differ not only in logistics but also in the kind of evidence they make available.

Surveys are useful when standardization and coverage matter
A survey asks participants to respond to a common set of questions or items. Because responses can be collected in a standardized form, surveys are particularly useful when researchers need comparable information across a relatively large number of participants.
A survey might ask university students to rate satisfaction with online learning, report study habits, identify technologies they use, or respond to items measuring a construct such as academic self-efficacy. Closed-ended items can facilitate quantitative analysis, while open-ended questions can produce textual responses. The presence of open-ended questions does not make a survey an interview, because respondents generally do not participate in an interviewer-led conversation in which answers can be immediately clarified or probed.
Standardization is one of the survey's major strengths, but it also creates a trade-off. Researchers must decide in advance what to ask and, for closed-ended items, which responses participants will be allowed to select. Poorly defined constructs, ambiguous questions, unsuitable response scales, weak instruments, or important omitted options can therefore undermine the evidence even when the sample is large.
Surveys are also primarily self-report methods when respondents are asked about themselves. They may be appropriate for attitudes, perceptions, experiences, intentions, and reported behaviors, but researchers should distinguish these from evidence obtained through measures that do not depend on participant self-report.
Interviews are useful when individual accounts need depth and clarification
Interviews generate data through conversation between a researcher and a participant. Depending on the study, interviews may be structured, semi-structured, or relatively open. Semi-structured interviews are common in qualitative research because they provide some consistency across participants while allowing the interviewer to pursue relevant ideas that emerge during the conversation.
Interviews are particularly useful when the research question concerns how individuals understand, interpret, experience, explain, or make sense of something. A researcher studying why early-career academics hesitate to use generative AI in teaching, for example, could ask participants to describe specific concerns, experiences, institutional expectations, and situations that shaped their decisions.
The ability to probe is important. If a participant says, “I don't trust it,” an interviewer can ask what “trust” means in that context, what experiences produced the concern, and whether the concern applies to particular uses rather than generative AI generally.
That depth comes at a cost. Interviewing, transcription or preparation of records, coding, analysis, and interpretation can require substantial time. More importantly, an interview gives access to what participants communicate in the interview context. It does not automatically establish what they actually did outside that context.
Focus groups use interaction rather than merely collecting several interviews at once
A focus group brings a small group of participants together for a facilitated discussion of a topic. Its distinctive methodological value lies in interaction. Participants can respond to one another, agree, disagree, qualify statements, introduce shared experiences, challenge assumptions, and develop ideas collectively.
Suppose researchers want to understand how faculty members discuss acceptable uses of generative AI in assessment. In individual interviews, each participant responds primarily to the interviewer. In a focus group, one faculty member's proposed boundary may prompt another to challenge it, offer an exception, or describe a competing norm. That interaction can itself become analytically informative.
This is also why a focus group should not be selected simply because interviewing several people simultaneously appears efficient. Group dynamics affect the evidence. Dominant participants may influence discussion. Less confident members may contribute less. Participants may avoid sensitive disclosures in front of colleagues. Confidentiality also requires special consideration because the researcher cannot fully control what other participants later repeat outside the group.
For highly personal, stigmatized, confidential, or power-sensitive topics, individual interviews may provide a more suitable setting, although appropriateness remains context dependent.
Observation is useful when the question concerns what happens in practice
Observation involves systematically attending to and recording behaviors, activities, interactions, events, environments, or processes relevant to the research question. The researcher may participate in the setting to varying degrees or remain more detached, depending on the methodological approach.
Observation becomes particularly valuable when there may be a difference between what people say happens and what occurs in practice, or when important activities are routine, tacit, interactional, or difficult for participants to reconstruct accurately afterward.
If the question concerns how students collaborate during laboratory activities, observing the sessions may reveal turn-taking, division of tasks, use of equipment, requests for help, and interaction patterns that would be difficult to reconstruct from a questionnaire alone.
Observation nevertheless has its own blind spots. Seeing a student remain silent during a group activity does not tell you why the student was silent. The behavior could reflect uncertainty, disagreement, concentration, exclusion, fatigue, or something else entirely. Observation may provide relatively direct evidence of observable behavior while still providing indirect evidence of underlying thoughts or motivations.
Do not reduce the choice to quantitative versus qualitative
The methods do not map neatly onto a numbers-versus-words distinction. Surveys may contain closed- and open-ended items. Observation may involve qualitative field notes or structured counts of predefined behaviors. Interviews and focus groups commonly generate qualitative material, but highly structured interview responses can also be coded quantitatively.
The form of the resulting data is therefore only part of the decision. What matters more is how the evidence was generated, what it represents, and what analytical claims it can support. Collecting numerical and textual data in the same study also does not, by itself, establish that the research is mixed methods.
Depth, breadth, standardization, and flexibility pull in different directions
A highly standardized survey can make responses easier to compare across many participants, but it offers less opportunity to pursue unexpected answers. A semi-structured interview offers considerable flexibility and depth, but collecting the same degree of information from hundreds of participants may be unrealistic. Focus groups can generate rich interaction but sacrifice some individual privacy. Observation can capture situated practices but may require prolonged access and considerable researcher time.
These differences illustrate broader trade-offs among depth, breadth, standardization, and flexibility. There is no configuration that maximizes every desirable property simultaneously. Methodological choice is partly about deciding which properties matter most for the question being asked.
You may need more than one method, but each should have a job
Some questions genuinely require different forms of evidence. A researcher studying classroom participation might observe classroom interaction and interview students afterward about how they interpreted those interactions. The two methods are not redundant: they provide evidence about different aspects of the phenomenon.
Multiple methods should therefore be justified by evidentiary need rather than the assumption that methodological quantity equals rigor. If one method already provides the evidence needed to answer the question, adding another can increase cost, participant burden, data-management demands, and analytical complexity without improving the study.
When several techniques are under consideration, it helps to distinguish using multiple data collection methods from conducting mixed-methods research. They are related possibilities, but they are not synonymous.
