Can You Simply Rewrite Your Research Question as an Objective?
You already have a research question:
How do university students use generative AI when writing academic assignments?
Now you need an objective. The obvious solution seems to be:
To examine how university students use generative AI when writing academic assignments.
Sometimes that is perfectly reasonable. A focused research question may translate quite naturally into an objective. But simply replacing the interrogative form with “to examine” does not guarantee that you have written a useful objective.
The real task is to identify what the study must accomplish in order to answer the question. That requires preserving the question's substantive meaning while making the intended research accomplishment explicit.
03 · What You Need to Know
A Research Objective Should Preserve the Logic of the Question
Start by Asking What Kind of Answer the Question Requires
Before choosing an action verb, determine what intellectual task is embedded in the research question.
Is the question asking you to describe something? Compare groups? Examine an association? Explore experiences? Evaluate an intervention? Estimate prevalence? Develop something? Explain a process?
That underlying task is more important than the surface wording.
If the question asks...
The objective may need to...

What characteristics or patterns exist?
Describe or characterize them

How do two groups differ?

Are two variables related?
Examine their association or relationship

These verbs are possibilities rather than a universal dictionary. The appropriate wording depends on the methodology, disciplinary convention, and claim the study is actually capable of supporting.
Preserve the Core Elements of the Research Question
When converting a question, identify the substantive elements that should survive the transformation. Depending on the study, these may include:
the population or unit being studied;
the phenomenon, construct, exposure, intervention, or variables of interest;
the comparison or relationship, when relevant;
the context or setting when it materially defines the study;
the type of knowledge or inference being sought.
For example:
Question: Is frequency of generative AI use associated with academic writing self-efficacy among undergraduate students?
A closely aligned objective would be:
Objective: To examine the association between frequency of generative AI use and academic writing self-efficacy among undergraduate students.
The population, variables, and relational structure remain intact.
Do Not Accidentally Strengthen the Claim
One of the most consequential errors occurs when the objective implies a stronger form of inference than the question or design supports.
Suppose your question is:
What is the relationship between students' generative AI use and their academic writing performance?
An objective such as:
To determine the effect of generative AI use on academic writing performance.
is not necessarily equivalent. Relationship or association does not automatically mean effect . The latter may imply a causal interpretation that requires an appropriate design and assumptions.
Watch Out
Changing the verb can change the scientific claim. Do not convert “associated with” into “causes,” “predicts,” “influences,” or “affects” unless the research question, design, data, and analytical strategy justify that stronger inference.
Do Not Accidentally Narrow the Question Either
The reverse can also happen. Imagine asking:
How do doctoral students experience the use of generative AI throughout the dissertation-writing process?
Then writing:
To identify the generative AI tools doctoral students use when drafting dissertation chapters.
This objective addresses only one portion of the original question. It narrows the inquiry from experiences across the dissertation-writing process to tool use during drafting.
That may be a legitimate specific objective, but it does not by itself represent the whole question. Additional objectives may be needed, or the original question may need to be narrowed.
Question Words Do Not Determine the Objective Verb Mechanically
There is no reliable rule that every what question becomes “to identify,” every how question becomes “to examine,” and every why question becomes “to determine.”
Consider:
What factors are associated with students' adoption of generative AI?
The question begins with what , but the intellectual task concerns association. “To examine factors associated with students' adoption of generative AI” may therefore communicate the purpose better than mechanically choosing “to identify.”
Verb choice should follow the analytical intent rather than the first word of the question.
The Objective Should State an Accomplishment, Not a Procedure
Another common conversion error is moving from the question directly to the method.
Question: How do students perceive university policies on generative AI?
Weak conversion: To interview students about university policies on generative AI.
The interview is a method. The objective is what the interviews are intended to accomplish:
Better: To explore students' perceptions of university policies on generative AI.
The methods section can then explain why interviews are appropriate, how participants will be selected, and how the data will be analyzed.
Not Every Question Requires Exactly One Objective
A narrowly focused question may map neatly onto one objective. A broader question may require several objectives because answering it involves several distinct research accomplishments.
Likewise, related questions may sometimes be addressed by overlapping objectives. The relationship should be conceptually defensible rather than mechanically symmetrical.
The issue of whether every research question needs a corresponding objective therefore cannot be settled by simply counting the statements.
The Objective Must Remain Achievable
Conversion is not complete until you check feasibility.
Suppose the question asks:
How does generative AI use affect the long-term development of university students' writing ability?
You can easily turn that into a grammatically elegant objective. But if your study consists of a one-time cross-sectional survey asking students how often they use AI, the design may not be capable of establishing long-term developmental effects.
That is why the final test is not linguistic. You must determine whether the objective can actually be achieved by the study design .
How Specific Should the Converted Objective Become?
The objective should usually be specific enough that a reader can understand the intended research accomplishment and determine what kind of evidence would be relevant. It need not contain every sampling criterion, instrument, analytical technique, or procedural detail.
If the question itself is too broad, converting it faithfully may simply reproduce that problem. In such cases, the appropriate solution is not to make the objective artificially precise while leaving the question untouched. Refine the underlying inquiry first.
The appropriate level of specificity for a research objective depends partly on what information is necessary to distinguish the intended accomplishment from adjacent questions.

Hypothetical Example
From Question to Objective Without Changing the Study
A researcher is developing a study of generative AI use among undergraduate students. Rather than applying one verb to every objective, the researcher first identifies the type of answer each question requires.
Descriptive question For which academic writing tasks do undergraduate students use generative AI?
Descriptive objective To identify the academic writing tasks for which undergraduate students use generative AI.
Relational question Is frequency of generative AI use associated with students' academic writing self-efficacy?
Relational objective To examine the association between frequency of generative AI use and students' academic writing self-efficacy.
Comparative question Do students with prior formal AI training differ from students without such training in their reported verification practices?
Comparative objective To compare reported verification practices between students with and without prior formal AI training.
Exploratory question How do students describe the role of generative AI in revising their academic writing?
Exploratory objective To explore how students describe the role of generative AI in revising their academic writing.
In each pair, the grammatical form changes, but the more important feature is conceptual preservation. A descriptive question remains descriptive. An association is not transformed into causation. A comparison retains its groups. An exploratory question remains open enough to investigate participants' accounts rather than forcing them into a predetermined quantitative relationship.
This is what a successful conversion should accomplish.
06 · What This Means for You
Use a Conceptual Conversion, Not a Find-and-Replace Exercise
Take each research question individually and identify the answer it requires. Then write an objective that names the corresponding research accomplishment without changing the scope or strength of the intended claim.
A simple conversion framework
If the question asks what exists or how common something is
Use an objective that describes, identifies, characterizes, or estimates the phenomenon as appropriate.
If the question asks whether groups differ
Use an objective that explicitly preserves the comparison.
If the question asks whether variables are related
State the relationship or association without automatically converting it into a causal effect.
If the question concerns experiences, meanings, or processes
Use wording appropriate to exploratory or interpretive inquiry rather than forcing quantitative language.
If the converted objective cannot be achieved with the proposed design
Revise the question, objective, design, or some combination of them until the logic is coherent.
Once you have drafted the objective, read the question and objective side by side. The distinction between research questions and research objectives should remain visible, but they should clearly belong to the same investigation.
Then examine the wording itself. Action verbs can help make an objective precise, but whether objectives need formally measurable action verbs depends partly on what “measurable” means within the methodology being used.

Before Accepting the Converted Objective
For each question-objective pair, check:
What type of answer does the research question actually require?
Does the objective preserve the population, phenomenon, variables, comparison, or relationship contained in the question?
Does the action verb accurately represent the intended research task?
Have you avoided turning an association or relationship into an unsupported causal claim?
Does the objective describe an intended research accomplishment rather than merely a method or procedural step?
Is the objective neither substantially broader nor substantially narrower than the question it represents?
Can the proposed data and analysis actually address the objective?
Does the resulting objective comply with the terminology and format required by your institution, discipline, protocol, or funder?
