Just Because We Can Study Something, Should We?
Almost anything can become a research topic if the question is framed cleverly enough.
Researchers can survey another group, test another variable, compare another pair of technologies, replicate an intervention in another institution, analyze another dataset, or explore another experience. Modern research tools make some forms of investigation easier than ever.
But research consumes resources. Participants give time, disclose information, accept inconvenience, or sometimes face risk. Researchers invest months or years. Institutions provide funding, supervision, equipment, infrastructure, and administrative support. Every study also carries an opportunity cost: resources devoted to one question cannot simultaneously be devoted to another.
The question before beginning a project is therefore not merely, "Can this be researched?" It is, "Is learning the answer valuable enough to justify conducting the research?"
03 · What You Need to Know
Research Value Depends on More Than Having an Interesting Topic
A worthwhile study begins with a question that matters
An unanswered question is not automatically an important question.
The scholarly literature contains countless things nobody has studied. Some are unstudied because they are difficult. Others are unstudied because few people have found them consequential enough to investigate.
Researchers therefore need to explain why reducing a particular uncertainty matters.
The reason may be intellectual. A phenomenon central to a theory remains poorly understood. Evidence may be contradictory. An influential claim may never have been replicated adequately.
The reason may instead be practical. Professionals, organizations, communities, or policymakers may face a consequential problem without adequate evidence.
Both can provide legitimate justification. As the broader discussion of why we conduct research makes clear, research serves more than one purpose.
There should be genuine uncertainty worth reducing
Research has limited value when the answer is already sufficiently established for the purpose at hand.
This does not mean researchers should never replicate existing studies. Replication can be highly valuable when confidence in an important finding remains inadequate, when boundary conditions need testing, or when previous evidence has methodological limitations.
The issue is whether additional evidence is likely to change what researchers or decision-makers can reasonably conclude.
A study that merely reproduces an established result in another convenient sample without a reason why the new evidence matters may contribute very little.
The expected contribution should be identifiable
Before collecting data, researchers should be able to explain what the study could add.
The contribution might be empirical evidence, theoretical refinement, methodological improvement, replication, synthesis, documentation of an underrepresented population, evaluation of a practical intervention, or evidence relevant to a decision.
This follows from the principle that producing something completely unprecedented is not the only legitimate research contribution.
The contribution does not need to be enormous. It does need to be more specific than "this study will add to the body of knowledge."
Potential beneficiaries and users should be plausible
Research value can depend partly on who could reasonably use or build upon what is learned.
The beneficiaries might be other researchers, professionals, students, organizations, communities, policymakers, or wider populations. Some fundamental research has no identifiable immediate end user beyond scholarship, which can still be legitimate.
The important distinction is between plausible benefit and ceremonial beneficiary lists. Research beneficiaries should be connected to credible pathways rather than named because a proposal template expects them.
Immediate practical application is not required
Worthwhile research does not have to solve a current practical problem.
Basic research can investigate fundamental phenomena without a particular application or use in view. Such research can improve understanding and establish foundations for later work whose eventual applications may be impossible to predict.
Consequently, research without immediate practical application can still be worth doing.
The absence of application, however, does not remove the need to explain intellectual significance.
The research question and method must fit each other
An important question does not justify a study incapable of answering it.
If the proposed design cannot generate evidence relevant to the claim, the expected value of the project falls substantially. A causal question cannot be answered convincingly merely because researchers have convenient correlational data. A poorly measured construct cannot support precise conclusions simply because the sample is large.
Methodological adequacy is therefore part of research value, not a technical concern that comes after significance has been established.
Feasibility matters
A theoretically excellent study may not be worth initiating if researchers cannot recruit the necessary participants, access required data, obtain appropriate equipment, complete the project within available time, or perform the required analysis competently.
Feasibility does not mean choosing only easy questions. Difficult research can be highly worthwhile.
It means having a realistic pathway from the research question to credible evidence.
A smaller study that can be conducted rigorously may contribute more than an ambitious project that cannot be completed adequately.
Ethical acceptability is part of whether research is worth doing
Research value cannot be separated from research ethics.
The Belmont Report identifies beneficence as an ethical principle involving efforts to secure well-being and describes relevant obligations in terms of not harming and maximizing possible benefits while minimizing possible harms. It also recognizes that assessment of risks and benefits affects whether research is ethically justified.
The Declaration of Helsinki likewise requires medical research involving human participants to have scientific value and importance while ensuring that research objectives do not take precedence over participants' rights and interests.
The details of applicable ethical frameworks differ by discipline, jurisdiction, institution, and type of research. The broader principle is clear: exposing participants to burdens or risks for a study incapable of producing meaningful knowledge creates an ethical problem, not merely a methodological one.
Scientific quality and ethics are connected
A badly designed study can be unethical because participant burdens may produce little useful knowledge.
Imagine asking hundreds of people to disclose sensitive information using a measure that cannot answer the research question. Even if data collection procedures are respectful, the poor design weakens the justification for imposing those burdens.
Scientific rigor therefore contributes to ethical justification.
Interesting
The question attracts curiosity or attention.
Researchable
Evidence relevant to the question can realistically be generated using available methods and resources.
Worth researching
The expected value of answering the question is sufficient to justify the study's resources, effort, risks, burdens, and opportunity costs.
Opportunity cost matters even when a study is harmless
Research resources are finite.
A project may involve minimal participant risk and still consume substantial supervision, funding, researcher time, computing resources, laboratory access, or institutional support.
Choosing one project means not using those resources elsewhere. This does not require researchers to prove that their question is the single best possible use of every resource. Such a standard would make research planning impossible.
It does mean that significance should be substantial enough to justify the effort relative to plausible alternatives.
Local significance can be enough
A study does not need global impact to be worthwhile.
An organization may need evidence about its own processes. A community may face a locally important problem. A country may need research concerning a population poorly represented in international evidence.
As long as the question is meaningful and the design appropriate, local research can be valuable within an appropriately defined scope.
What researchers should avoid is inflating local significance into universal claims merely to make the study sound more impressive.
Negative or unexpected findings do not make a study worthless
A worthwhile study is not one guaranteed to produce the result researchers hope for.
If a rigorous investigation fails to support an expected relationship, that finding can constrain explanations, challenge assumptions, prevent investment in ineffective approaches, or identify new questions.
Research value lies in reducing meaningful uncertainty, not in confirming the researcher's preferred conclusion.
A worthwhile study can still produce an inconclusive answer
Research operates under uncertainty. Even a carefully designed study can produce estimates too imprecise for a definitive conclusion, encounter unforeseen limitations, or reveal that the original question was more complicated than expected.
This possibility does not necessarily make the study unjustified in retrospect.
The more appropriate question is whether the study had a reasonable prospect of producing useful evidence when it was designed and whether researchers interpreted the eventual findings honestly.
Research value can emerge over different timescales
Some studies address urgent practical problems and may become useful quickly. Others contribute methods, data, fundamental knowledge, or trained researchers whose effects appear much later.
This is why long-term and indirect research benefits should be considered without being treated as guaranteed future impact.
The expected timescale should match the type of research. Requiring every project to demonstrate immediate societal impact can distort research priorities toward outcomes that are easiest to observe rather than questions that are most important to understand.
06 · What This Means for You
Evaluate the Value of the Question Before Falling in Love With the Method
Researchers sometimes begin with what they can easily do: a dataset they already possess, a survey they can distribute, an analytical technique they want to try, or a population they can conveniently access.
Those resources can inspire useful research. But methodological convenience should not become the reason the question exists.
Begin by asking what would become better understood if the study succeeded and why that improvement matters.
A simple decision framework
If the answer is already sufficiently established
Ask whether replication, extension, or additional evidence would genuinely change confidence or understanding before proceeding.
If an important uncertainty remains
Identify precisely what evidence would reduce that uncertainty and whether your study can provide it.
If the question matters but the proposed design cannot answer it
Redesign the study, narrow the question, acquire additional capability, or reconsider the project.
If the study is feasible but contributes very little
Consider whether your time, participants, and resources would be better used on a more consequential question.
If the contribution is meaningful but risks or burdens are substantial
Assess whether they can be reduced and whether the remaining expected benefits justify the research under the applicable ethical framework.
If the project has a credible contribution, appropriate methods, ethical justification, and realistic feasibility
You have a substantially stronger case that the research is worth pursuing.
This framework does not produce a numerical score declaring a study worthwhile. Different disciplines, questions, participants, risks, and resource environments require judgment.
Its purpose is to make that judgment explicit.
Watch Out
Do not justify a weak study by inflating its potential impact. Claims that research will transform a profession, improve national development, benefit society, or revolutionize practice cannot compensate for a question whose actual contribution is unclear. Start with what the study can realistically add.
