Why Do We Spend So Much Time Doing Research?
Research can demand months or years of work. It consumes money, attention, equipment, institutional resources, and sometimes the goodwill of participants who agree to give us their time. Researchers formulate questions, collect evidence, analyze data, defend interpretations, revise manuscripts, and occasionally discover that the result is much less tidy than they had hoped.
So there is a deceptively simple question underneath the entire enterprise: why do research at all?
A common answer is that research produces new knowledge. That is certainly part of the answer, but it is not the whole of it. Research may help us understand a phenomenon, test an explanation, challenge an assumption, solve a practical problem, evaluate an intervention, improve professional practice, inform a decision, or establish a foundation that somebody else may use years later.
Understanding these purposes matters because the value of a study cannot always be judged by asking whether it produced an immediately useful product or a dramatic discovery. Different research questions are worth pursuing for different reasons.
03 · What You Need to Know
Research Can Serve Several Legitimate Purposes
Research helps us understand what we do not yet understand
At its most fundamental level, research is a way of asking questions about phenomena for which our existing understanding is incomplete. We might want to know why something happens, how two phenomena are related, what people experience, how a process develops, or what conditions influence an outcome.
This purpose does not require an immediate practical application. The OECD, for example, defines basic research as experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge about the foundations of phenomena and observable facts without a particular application or use in view.
That distinction is important. A researcher does not necessarily need to know in advance what every finding will eventually be used for. Some questions deserve investigation because understanding the phenomenon itself matters. This is one reason the purposes served by research cannot be reduced to a single kind of contribution .
Research allows us to examine what we think we already know
Research does not begin only where knowledge is completely absent. Sometimes the important question is whether an accepted explanation, finding, assumption, or practice continues to hold when examined more carefully or under different conditions.
A claim may have substantial supporting evidence and still deserve further investigation. Findings can depend on populations, settings, measurements, historical conditions, or analytical choices. Replication, extension, comparison, and critical re-examination are therefore legitimate contributions to knowledge.
This is one reason novelty should not be interpreted simply as discovering something nobody has ever considered. A study may contribute by testing the boundaries of existing knowledge, providing stronger evidence, resolving conflicting findings, or determining whether an established conclusion travels to another context.
Research can address specific practical problems
Some research begins with a concrete problem. A hospital may want to understand why patients miss follow-up appointments. A university may investigate why students withdraw from a particular program. An organization may test whether a new process reduces errors. A community may need evidence about a local environmental or social concern.
Here, research is directed toward understanding a problem well enough to support action. The OECD distinguishes this kind of applied research from basic research: applied research still seeks new knowledge, but it is directed primarily toward a specific practical aim or objective.
That does not make applied research inherently more valuable than research without an immediate application. It simply reflects a different purpose. Curiosity-driven and problem-driven research can contribute in different ways, and productive research systems generally have reasons to support both.
Research can reduce uncertainty without eliminating it
Many decisions must be made before certainty is possible. Should an institution adopt a new intervention? Which population appears to be at greatest risk? Does a program seem to work under the conditions in which it will actually be implemented? What unintended consequences should decision-makers anticipate?
Research can provide evidence relevant to these questions. It may estimate effects, identify patterns, compare alternatives, uncover mechanisms, or document experiences that would otherwise be poorly understood.
But research rarely transforms uncertainty into certainty. Evidence can be incomplete, measurements imperfect, findings context-dependent, and future conditions different from those observed in a study. A more realistic purpose is therefore to make decisions under uncertainty better informed , while remaining explicit about what the evidence cannot establish.
Research gives us a systematic way to question assumptions
People acquire knowledge from many sources. Experience matters. Professional expertise matters. Communities preserve valuable knowledge through tradition, and experts can provide judgments that would be foolish to ignore.
The difficulty is that these sources can also be incomplete. Personal experience may represent a narrow set of cases. Traditions may persist after the circumstances that produced them have changed. Authorities may disagree. Intuition can be persuasive even when it is mistaken.
Research adds a different form of inquiry: questions and claims can be examined through explicit methods and evidence that others can scrutinize. This does not make research infallible. Poorly designed research can mislead, and even strong studies remain open to criticism and revision. Its distinctive value lies partly in making the basis for a conclusion examinable rather than asking others simply to accept it. The difference becomes clearer when considering research alongside experience, tradition, and authority rather than treating these sources of knowledge as interchangeable.
Research creates resources that others can build upon
The usefulness of research is not confined to what the original investigators do with their findings. A dataset may enable another analysis. A conceptual distinction may change how later researchers formulate a problem. A methodological improvement may make future studies more reliable. A finding that seems modest on its own may become important when combined with a larger body of evidence.
This cumulative character helps explain why the consequences of research are sometimes difficult to predict at the beginning of a project. The researcher controls the study more readily than its eventual intellectual or practical trajectory.
For the same reason, the absence of an immediate practical application does not automatically make research pointless . Knowledge can acquire uses as theories, technologies, institutions, and social needs change.
Research can contribute beyond the research literature
Research findings may eventually inform professional practice, organizational decisions, public policy, technological development, education, community initiatives, or further investigation. UNESCO's Recommendation on Open Science, for example, explicitly connects scientific knowledge with benefits for science and society and emphasizes wider participation in the creation and circulation of knowledge.
These broader effects should not be assumed merely because a study has been published. Publication makes research available; it does not guarantee that anyone will use it or that its use will produce beneficial consequences.
Research output
Something produced through the research process, such as a paper, dataset, method, model, or report.
Research contribution
What the research adds to understanding, evidence, methods, theory, practice, or another area of inquiry.
Research impact
Changes or effects that occur when research or research-based knowledge influences scholarship, practice, policy, society, the economy, or other domains.
Keeping these concepts separate prevents a common mistake: treating the completion or publication of a study as proof that the study has already produced meaningful change.
04 · A Practical Example
One Research Question Can Create Several Kinds of Value
Hypothetical Example
Why are students leaving an online course?
Imagine a university notices that a substantial number of students stop participating in one of its online courses. Administrators could rely on informal impressions about why this happens. Instead, a research team investigates the issue systematically.
Question The researchers ask which academic, technological, instructional, and personal factors appear to be associated with students' disengagement.
Evidence They collect appropriate data from students and course records, using methods suited to the research questions and relevant ethical requirements.
Understanding The study provides evidence about patterns and experiences that were previously based largely on assumptions.
Action The university can use the findings, together with other relevant considerations, when deciding whether and how to modify the course or student-support system.
Further research Other researchers may test whether similar patterns occur in different courses, institutions, populations, or educational systems.
The same project can therefore serve several purposes. It may improve understanding, challenge assumptions, support an institutional decision, generate new questions, and provide evidence for later studies.
Notice, however, what the study does not automatically do. It does not guarantee that the university will make the right decision, that an intervention will work, or that the findings apply to every online course elsewhere. Research contributes evidence to a problem; it does not magically remove the need for interpretation, judgment, and contextual knowledge.
06 · What This Means for You
Start With the Contribution Your Research Could Make
If you are planning a study, asking "Why am I doing this?" should lead to something more substantive than "because I need to publish" or "because research is required."
Try to identify what would become better understood if the study were conducted. Perhaps an important phenomenon remains poorly explained. Existing findings may conflict. A local problem may lack adequate evidence. An accepted practice may never have been evaluated under the conditions in which it is being used. A promising idea may need testing. A neglected population may be missing from the evidence base.
The answer does not need to promise world-changing impact. In fact, exaggerated claims of future impact often make a research rationale less credible rather than more convincing.
A simple way to think about research purpose
If we genuinely do not understand an important phenomenon
Research may be worthwhile because better understanding itself is a meaningful contribution.
If an important claim is uncertain, contested, or insufficiently tested
Research may strengthen, qualify, or challenge the available evidence.
If people must make a consequential decision with inadequate evidence
Research may reduce relevant uncertainty and clarify possible options or consequences.
If a practical problem is poorly understood
Research may identify contributing factors, evaluate possible responses, or generate knowledge needed for action.
If the immediate application is unknown but the question is intellectually important
The study may still be justified by its contribution to fundamental understanding and its potential to support future inquiry.
The harder question is not merely whether research can produce some benefit. Almost any project can be described in grand language if one tries hard enough. The more useful question is whether the expected contribution is important enough to justify the time, resources, risks, and opportunity costs involved. That is ultimately part of deciding what makes a particular research project worth doing .
Watch Out
A strong rationale explains a plausible contribution; it does not promise outcomes the study cannot deliver. A small study may inform understanding without transforming policy. A local study may be useful without being universally generalizable. A basic study may matter without producing an immediate application. Match the claim of significance to what the research can reasonably support.

Before You Decide a Study Is Worth Pursuing
Ask whether the proposed research can:
Address a question for which the existing understanding or evidence is genuinely incomplete.
Clarify what the study would contribute rather than simply stating that the topic is important.
Explain who might reasonably learn from, use, test, or build upon the resulting knowledge.
Distinguish an intellectual contribution from an immediate practical application when the two are not the same.
Avoid claiming societal, policy, professional, or economic impact that the proposed study cannot realistically demonstrate.
Consider whether the expected contribution justifies the resources, participant burden, risks, and opportunity costs involved.
Ask whether a different research question or method would produce evidence that is more useful for the underlying purpose.
Be able to explain why the question remains worth answering even if the eventual findings are unexpected, inconclusive, or contrary to your initial expectations.
