Where Should Your Attention Go First?
You open a research paper and face a familiar choice. Do you begin with the abstract? Jump to the conclusion? Look at the figures? Read the introduction to understand the background? Or go directly to the results because that is where the findings are reported?
There is no universally correct sequence. Research articles are structured so that different sections answer different questions, and your reason for opening the paper should influence where you direct your attention.
Still, you need somewhere to begin. For most empirical papers, a sensible first task is not deep reading at all. It is orientation: identify what the study is about, what question it addresses, what kind of study it appears to be, and whether it deserves more of your attention.
03 · What You Need to Know
The Best Starting Point Depends on What You Need From the Paper
Begin with orientation, not interpretation
When you first encounter a paper, you usually do not yet know whether it deserves twenty minutes, two hours, or no further reading at all. That makes orientation the most useful first task.
The title gives you an initial indication of the topic, population, variables, method, relationship, intervention, or finding the authors chose to emphasize. Titles vary considerably in how informative they are, so treat the title as a signpost rather than evidence.
The abstract then provides a compressed account of the study. In empirical articles, it commonly summarizes some combination of the background or objective, methods, principal results, and conclusions. This makes the title and abstract useful for determining whether the paper is sufficiently relevant to warrant closer examination. Guidance on reading scientific manuscripts similarly identifies the title and abstract as useful starting points for screening relevance.
Your first pass should therefore answer a few basic questions: What is this paper about? What did the researchers try to find out? What did they do? What do they say they found? Does any of that matter for the reason I opened the paper?
If the answer to the last question is no, stopping may be the correct decision. You do not need to turn every search result into a reading assignment.
The abstract is a map, not the destination
Abstracts are designed to condense a study into a small amount of space. A well-constructed abstract can tell you a great deal quickly, but compression necessarily removes detail. The full methods, complete results, qualifications, analytical decisions, and limitations cannot all be represented adequately in a few hundred words.
This distinction matters because reading an abstract can answer one question reasonably well: Does this paper appear relevant enough to investigate further? It is much less reliable for answering another: Does the evidence in this paper justify the conclusion I want to draw from it?

This is one reason you do not have to read a research paper from beginning to end. After orienting yourself, you can move deliberately to the parts that answer your next question.
After the abstract, your purpose should determine what comes next
There is no single section that every researcher should always read second. Different sections perform different functions. Research-reading guidance accordingly varies in its recommended sequence, and some authors explicitly argue that reading goals should determine which parts receive priority.

Think of this as question-driven reading. Instead of asking, "What section comes next?" ask, "What do I need to know next?"
If you are unfamiliar with the topic, the introduction may deserve early attention
Researchers already familiar with a field can sometimes move quickly through introductory material because they recognize the theoretical context, terminology, and major debates. Someone entering the field may need that context before the methods or findings make much sense.
The introduction usually explains the research problem, situates it within prior scholarship, and leads toward the study's objective or research question. Guidance on scientific manuscript reading suggests that readers with limited background knowledge may benefit from reading the introduction after the title and abstract, whereas readers already familiar with the topic may be able to move more quickly to the study objective.
That does not mean accepting the introduction as a complete or neutral history of the field. Authors necessarily select which literature to emphasize when constructing the rationale for their study. For initial comprehension, however, the section can provide the conceptual scaffolding needed to understand what follows.
If you care about the evidence, look at the results rather than only the conclusion
If your question is "What did this study find?", the authors' concluding statements should not be your only source of information. The results section, together with its figures and tables, is where the reported evidence is presented.
For many empirical papers, inspecting the figures and tables relatively early can be particularly informative. They may reveal the major comparisons, patterns, effect estimates, distributions, or relationships before you work through every paragraph of the results. Some scientific-reading approaches explicitly prioritize figures and tables because understanding the presented data is central to understanding the study.
But figures are not self-interpreting. Read axes, labels, captions, legends, units, group definitions, sample sizes where provided, and statistical annotations. You may then need to move backward to the methods to understand how the displayed data were generated.
If you need to judge credibility, the methods cannot remain optional
A finding does not become convincing simply because it appears in a results section. How participants were selected, how constructs were operationalized, how data were collected, what comparisons were made, how missing data were handled, and which analyses were used can materially affect what conclusions are justified.
You may therefore postpone detailed methods during initial screening, but you cannot necessarily skip them when evaluating evidence. The more heavily your own research depends on a study's findings, the more important it becomes to understand how those findings were produced.
This is where your reading often becomes recursive. A surprising result sends you to the methods. A methodological choice sends you to supplementary material. An unfamiliar measure sends you to a cited paper. You return to the result with a better understanding of what it represents.
Knowing when the methods section requires close reading is therefore more useful than treating methods as something you must either always read first or always leave until the end.
Do not let the discussion do all of your thinking for you
The discussion is valuable because the authors interpret their findings, relate them to previous scholarship, discuss implications, and often acknowledge limitations. But interpretation is precisely what it is: interpretation.
One active-reading approach recommends examining and independently interpreting the results before comparing your interpretation with the authors' discussion. This can reduce the tendency to encounter the evidence only through the explanatory frame supplied by the authors.
You do not need to turn every paper into an adversarial exercise. You should, however, preserve a distinction between what the study reports and what the authors believe those findings mean.
That distinction becomes especially important when deciding whether to accept the interpretation offered in the discussion.
Different kinds of papers may require different starting strategies
The familiar introduction-methods-results-discussion structure is common in empirical research, but not every scholarly article follows it. Review articles, theoretical papers, qualitative studies, methodological articles, humanities scholarship, brief reports, registered reports, and other publication types may organize their arguments differently.
Even within empirical research, journals may combine sections or place methods elsewhere. A rigid rule such as "always read the results second" therefore travels poorly across disciplines and article types.
The more general strategy is more durable: orient yourself first, identify what kind of paper you are dealing with, clarify what you need from it, and then locate the part of the document most likely to answer that need.
04 · A Practical Example
One Paper, Three Different Starting Routes
Hypothetical Example
A study of AI-assisted feedback in university writing
Suppose you find an empirical paper examining whether AI-assisted feedback influences students' academic writing. The paper appears relevant, but what you should read after the title and abstract depends on why you found it.
If you are mapping the literature After the abstract, inspect the introduction to understand the problem being addressed and how the authors position their study relative to earlier research. Then determine whether the paper warrants deeper reading.
If you want to know whether the intervention worked After orienting yourself, move toward the results, figures, and tables. Identify the relevant outcomes and comparisons, then consult the methods to understand how those outcomes were measured and analyzed.
If you want to adapt the intervention for your own study The methods quickly become central. You need to know what the intervention actually involved, who received it, under what conditions, what comparison was used, and how outcomes were assessed.
If you want to cite the paper as evidence Do not stop with the abstract. Examine the parts of the methods and results necessary to determine whether the evidence supports the precise claim you intend to make, then consider the discussion and limitations.
Nothing about the paper itself changed across these situations. Your research purpose changed, and therefore the most useful route through the paper changed with it.

Your First Few Minutes With a Research Paper
When you first open a paper, check:
What does the title tell me about the topic, population, variables, method, or main claim?
What research question, objective, or problem does the abstract indicate the study addresses?
What kind of study or scholarly paper am I looking at?
Does the abstract indicate that the paper is genuinely relevant to my current purpose?
What do I need to know next: context, methods, evidence, or interpretation?
Which section, table, figure, or supplementary material is most likely to answer that question?
Am I treating the abstract and discussion as summaries and interpretations rather than substitutes for examining the underlying evidence?
Has the paper become important enough that I should move from screening to deeper reading?
