Abstract, Methods, Results, or Discussion: Where Should You Start?

There is no single best section to start with in every research paper. The abstract is useful for orientation, but your next move should depend on whether you need context, methodological detail, evidence, or interpretation.

01 · The Question

Which Section Should You Read First?

A conventional empirical research paper seems to offer an obvious route: introduction, methods, results, discussion. That is the order in which the paper is presented, but it does not necessarily have to be the order in which you read it.

You might have heard advice to start with the abstract, jump immediately to the results, inspect the figures before reading anything else, or even read the discussion first so you know what the paper is trying to say. Each strategy can make sense in a particular situation. None is automatically best for every reader or every paper.

The more useful question is: What do you need to know first? Once you can answer that, choosing between the abstract, methods, results, and discussion becomes much easier.

02 · The Short Answer

There Is No Universal Best Section to Start With

In Brief

For a paper you have never seen before, the abstract is usually a practical starting point for orientation, but the best section to read next depends on your purpose: methods for how the study was conducted, results for what was found, and discussion for how the authors interpret those findings.

Reading order and evidential importance are different things. You may read the discussion early to understand the paper's argument, for example, but still need the methods and results before deciding whether that argument is convincing.

03 · What You Need to Know

Each Section Answers a Different Question

A useful way to choose your starting point is to stop thinking of article sections merely as places in a sequence. Instead, think of them as different sources of information.

Research-reading guidance emphasizes precisely this relationship between purpose and reading strategy. Carey and colleagues recommend identifying your reading goal because different intentions may require different priorities within the same article. Guidance from StatPearls similarly notes that what comes after an initial title-and-abstract screening depends on factors such as prior knowledge, reading goals, available attention, and interest.

Those functions overlap somewhat, and article structures vary across disciplines. Still, the distinction gives you a practical principle: start with the section most likely to answer your immediate question, after obtaining enough orientation to understand what you are looking at.

Start with the abstract when you need orientation

If this is your first encounter with a paper, the abstract is often the most efficient entry point. It can tell you the study's broad purpose, approach, principal findings, and conclusions without requiring an immediate commitment to the full article.

This is particularly useful during literature searching. A keyword match does not guarantee that a paper actually addresses your question. Screening the title and abstract can help you determine whether further reading is justified before you spend time on methodological or analytical detail.

That makes the abstract a good starting point, but not necessarily a good stopping point.

Watch Out

An abstract is a compressed representation of a study. Do not use its convenience as a reason to assume that you understand the evidence well enough to evaluate or cite a substantive finding. Important details may only become apparent in the full methods, results, limitations, figures, tables, or supplementary materials.

If you are still deciding what to read when you first open a research paper, orientation is usually more useful than immediately attempting a detailed critique.

Start with the methods when your question is about how the study was done

Suppose you found a paper because it uses an instrument you are considering for your own research. Perhaps you need to know how participants were recruited, how an intervention was implemented, how a construct was operationalized, how qualitative data were coded, or which statistical model was fitted.

In those situations, there is little reason to work through several pages of background before locating the methodological information you actually need.

The methods are also central when your purpose is critical appraisal. Results acquire meaning through the procedures that produced them. A statistically impressive association may be much less persuasive if the design cannot support the inference being made. A useful-looking intervention may not transfer easily to your context if the original sample or implementation conditions differ substantially.

Starting with the methods therefore makes particular sense when the validity, reproducibility, applicability, or adaptation of the research procedure is your main concern.

That does not mean methods should always be read first. During initial screening, detailed methods may be unnecessary. The better principle is to know when methodological detail becomes important enough to require close reading.

Start with the results when you want to see the evidence before the interpretation

If your main question is "What did they actually find?", the results section is the obvious place to investigate. This is where empirical papers typically report the observations, estimates, comparisons, statistical tests, themes, models, or other analytical outputs that constitute the study's findings.

Carey and colleagues emphasize examining figures and tables closely and asking what the results show. Their broader argument is that active reading should distinguish the reported evidence from the authors' subsequent interpretation of it.

For some papers, starting with figures and tables can provide a particularly efficient route into the results. A graph may reveal the major pattern, a table may show the size and direction of an association, or a qualitative results table may organize themes and illustrative material. You can then read the accompanying results text to understand how the authors report those findings.

But reading the results first creates its own questions. What exactly was measured? Who contributed the data? What does the comparison group represent? Was this analysis planned? What assumptions underlie the model?

Those questions send you back to the methods. That movement is not evidence that you chose the wrong starting point. It is how active reading often works.

Start with the discussion when you need the authors' interpretation quickly

The discussion can be useful when your immediate goal is to understand what the authors believe their study contributes. It commonly interprets the principal findings, relates them to earlier research, considers possible explanations, discusses implications, and acknowledges limitations.

If you are surveying a field or returning to a paper you already know, reading the discussion early may quickly remind you why the paper matters. It may also help you identify the larger scholarly conversation into which the authors place their findings.

The risk is that the discussion can frame your interpretation before you have examined the evidence yourself.

Results What the study reports finding from its data and analyses.
Discussion How the authors interpret those findings and position their meaning.

The distinction is essential. Authors may offer plausible explanations, theoretical interpretations, practical implications, or causal language that extends beyond what a particular design can firmly establish. That does not make the discussion untrustworthy. It means its claims should be evaluated in relation to the evidence.

If an interpretation matters to your own argument, the next question is not merely whether it sounds convincing but whether the authors' interpretation is adequately supported.

The introduction is still important even if you do not start there

The title of this guide emphasizes the abstract, methods, results, and discussion, but the introduction should not disappear from your reading strategy. It typically establishes the research problem, summarizes relevant prior scholarship, develops the rationale for the study, and leads toward the research objective, question, or hypothesis.

If you are unfamiliar with the topic, theoretical framework, terminology, or disciplinary debate, the introduction may need early attention. A specialist may be able to skim material that a newcomer needs to read carefully.

Conversely, if you already understand the background and are looking for one methodological detail, reading the entire introduction first may add little to your immediate task.

This is another reason rigid reading sequences are difficult to defend. What counts as necessary context depends partly on what the reader already knows.

A good starting point does not lock you into a fixed sequence

Research reading is often recursive rather than linear. You may begin with the abstract, inspect a figure, move to the methods to understand it, return to the results, read the discussion, and then revisit the introduction because the authors invoke a theory you now realize is important.

That may look untidy compared with reading from page one to the references, but it reflects the structure of inquiry. Each answer generates another question.

Question What is this paper about?
Abstract It appears relevant, but one reported finding is especially important.
Results What exactly does the evidence show?
Methods How was that outcome measured and analyzed?
Discussion Does the authors' interpretation fit what I now understand about the evidence?

This question-driven movement is compatible with broader strategies for reading research papers efficiently. Efficiency does not require a universal reading order. It requires directing attention toward information that serves your purpose.

Your first pass and your deep reading do not need the same order

A further distinction helps resolve much of the disagreement about where to start: the best sequence for screening a paper does not have to be the best sequence for critically evaluating it.

S. Keshav's well-known three-pass approach makes a similar distinction by increasing reading depth across successive passes. The first pass is designed to obtain an overall sense of the paper and decide whether further reading is warranted. Later passes involve progressively closer engagement.

Likewise, you might initially read an abstract and discussion to determine whether a paper matters to you, then return later and work carefully through the methods, figures, and results because the paper has become central to your research.

There is no contradiction. You are performing two different reading tasks.

Not every paper follows the same architecture

The familiar introduction-methods-results-discussion structure is common in empirical scientific research, but it is not universal. Qualitative papers may integrate findings and discussion. Some journals combine results and discussion. Theoretical papers may be organized around arguments rather than empirical sections. Review articles, methodological papers, humanities scholarship, registered reports, brief reports, and other publication types may require different routes.

Before applying any reading-order advice mechanically, identify what kind of paper you have opened and how it is organized.

Even the best map is less useful when you are holding a different map. Academia occasionally permits such excitement.

04 · A Practical Example

The Best Starting Section Changes With Your Question

Hypothetical Example

Four researchers open the same paper

Imagine an empirical study examining whether a particular form of digital feedback improves university students' writing performance. Four researchers find the same paper, but they need different things from it.

Researcher A: Is this relevant to my review? The abstract is the sensible starting point. The immediate task is screening rather than critical appraisal.
Researcher B: Can I adapt this intervention? After basic orientation, the methods become the priority. The researcher needs to know what the intervention actually involved and whether it could be implemented in another context.
Researcher C: Did the intervention improve performance? The results and relevant tables or figures deserve early attention. The researcher then needs methodological information to interpret those findings appropriately.
Researcher D: Why do the authors think the intervention worked? The discussion provides the authors' explanation, but the researcher should compare that explanation with the reported results and study design before accepting it.

The paper is identical in all four cases. What changes is the reader's question. Asking for the universally correct section to start with therefore removes the very information needed to choose intelligently.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Misconception

You should always start with the abstract

The abstract is an excellent orientation tool when a paper is new to you, but "always" is too strong. If you return to a familiar paper specifically to examine a sampling procedure, statistical model, or result, going directly to that material is entirely reasonable.

Reading the results first can help you form an interpretation before encountering the authors' explanation, which is valuable during critical appraisal. But someone initially mapping a literature or checking how authors position a contribution may legitimately inspect the discussion earlier. The important issue is not pretending that the discussion substitutes for examining the evidence when the evidence matters.

Misconception

The methods can wait because peer reviewers already checked them

Peer review does not remove the reader's responsibility to evaluate whether a study's design and analysis support the use you intend to make of its findings. If methodological choices matter to your interpretation, examine them yourself.

Misconception

The results tell you what the findings mean

Results report analytical outputs and observations, while meaning requires interpretation. The discussion supplies the authors' interpretation, but you should also consider what conclusions the design and evidence reasonably permit. Moving between results, methods, and discussion is often necessary.

Misconception

Jumping between sections means you are reading badly

Not if the movement is purposeful. Returning from a result to the methods, following a discussion claim back to a table, or consulting the introduction after encountering an unfamiliar theoretical concept can deepen understanding. Random jumping is distracting; question-driven navigation is different.

Let the Question Choose the Section

Instead of memorizing a universal sequence, establish your reading goal before deciding where to invest attention. This approach also prevents a common inefficiency: carefully reading sections that do not answer the question that brought you to the paper.

A simple decision framework

If the paper is new and you are checking relevance
Start with the title and abstract, then decide whether further reading is justified.
If you need to understand how the study was conducted
Prioritize the methods and any relevant supplementary methodological information.
If you need to know what the evidence shows
Prioritize the results, figures, and tables, then consult the methods needed to interpret them.
If you need the authors' explanation or implications
Read the discussion, but distinguish interpretation from the underlying results.
If the topic or theoretical context is unfamiliar
Give the introduction more attention before assuming you understand the research question or significance.
If the paper becomes important to your own research
Move beyond the question of where to start and read the relevant sections closely enough to evaluate the study as an integrated whole.

The strategy is therefore adaptive rather than arbitrary. You can move through a research paper without reading it strictly from beginning to end, provided that your eventual depth of reading matches what you intend to claim or do with the study.

Am I screening this paper, trying to understand it, or critically evaluating it?
If the paper is new to me, have I obtained enough orientation from the title and abstract?
If I need context, have I examined the introduction and research objective?
If I need to evaluate how the evidence was produced, have I examined the relevant methods?
If I need the actual findings, have I inspected the results and relevant figures or tables?
If I read the discussion early, have I kept the authors' interpretation separate from the reported evidence?
Have I changed my reading route when new questions emerged?
Does my intended use of the paper now require a deeper reading than my initial screening?

Questions About Which Research Paper Section to Read First

Should I start with the abstract or the introduction?

For a paper you have not previously read, the abstract is usually more efficient for initial orientation because it provides a compressed overview. If the paper appears relevant and you need the conceptual background, rationale, or research problem, the introduction can then receive closer attention.

Should I read the methods before the results?

Not necessarily during an initial pass. You can inspect the results first to see what the study reports and then examine the methods needed to understand how those findings were produced. If methodological validity is your primary concern, starting with the methods may make more sense.

Is it bad to read the discussion before the results?

No. It may be useful when you want a quick sense of the authors' interpretation or the paper's claimed contribution. The risk is allowing that interpretation to substitute for examining the results. If the claim matters to your research, compare the discussion with the evidence and methods.

Should I look at the figures before reading the results text?

For many empirical papers, yes, particularly when figures carry the central evidence. Read captions, axes, legends, labels, units, group definitions, and statistical annotations carefully. Then use the results text and methods to establish what the figure actually represents.

What should I read first if I am evaluating the quality of a study?

After establishing the research question and basic design, the methods and results usually require substantial attention. Study quality cannot be judged from the discussion or conclusion alone because credibility depends partly on how the evidence was generated, analyzed, and interpreted.

What if I cannot understand the methods?

First determine whether the unfamiliar method is consequential for the conclusion you need to draw. If it is, do not simply skip it and assume the analysis is appropriate. Consult methodological references, supplementary materials, explanatory resources, or someone with relevant expertise. The goal is not necessarily to become an expert in every technique, but to resolve enough of the methodological uncertainty to use the paper responsibly.

Does the same reading order work outside my discipline?

Not always. Article structures and conventions differ across fields, and unfamiliar terminology or methods may change what you need to read first. When working across disciplinary boundaries, identify the paper's structure and purpose before applying a familiar reading sequence mechanically.

09 · The Bottom Line

Start With the Information You Need, Not a Memorized Sequence

The Bottom Line

There is no universally correct choice among the abstract, methods, results, and discussion. Use the abstract to orient yourself when a paper is new, then let your purpose determine where you go next: methods for how the study was done, results for what was found, and discussion for what the authors think those findings mean.

Your route through the paper can change as new questions emerge. What matters is not whether you followed the published section order, but whether you eventually examined enough of the relevant evidence, methodology, context, and interpretation to support the way you intend to use the study.
