Each Section Answers a Different Question
A useful way to choose your starting point is to stop thinking of article sections merely as places in a sequence. Instead, think of them as different sources of information.
Research-reading guidance emphasizes precisely this relationship between purpose and reading strategy. Carey and colleagues recommend identifying your reading goal because different intentions may require different priorities within the same article. Guidance from StatPearls similarly notes that what comes after an initial title-and-abstract screening depends on factors such as prior knowledge, reading goals, available attention, and interest.

Those functions overlap somewhat, and article structures vary across disciplines. Still, the distinction gives you a practical principle: start with the section most likely to answer your immediate question, after obtaining enough orientation to understand what you are looking at.
Start with the abstract when you need orientation
If this is your first encounter with a paper, the abstract is often the most efficient entry point. It can tell you the study's broad purpose, approach, principal findings, and conclusions without requiring an immediate commitment to the full article.
This is particularly useful during literature searching. A keyword match does not guarantee that a paper actually addresses your question. Screening the title and abstract can help you determine whether further reading is justified before you spend time on methodological or analytical detail.
That makes the abstract a good starting point, but not necessarily a good stopping point.
Watch Out
An abstract is a compressed representation of a study. Do not use its convenience as a reason to assume that you understand the evidence well enough to evaluate or cite a substantive finding. Important details may only become apparent in the full methods, results, limitations, figures, tables, or supplementary materials.
If you are still deciding what to read when you first open a research paper, orientation is usually more useful than immediately attempting a detailed critique.
Start with the methods when your question is about how the study was done
Suppose you found a paper because it uses an instrument you are considering for your own research. Perhaps you need to know how participants were recruited, how an intervention was implemented, how a construct was operationalized, how qualitative data were coded, or which statistical model was fitted.
In those situations, there is little reason to work through several pages of background before locating the methodological information you actually need.
The methods are also central when your purpose is critical appraisal. Results acquire meaning through the procedures that produced them. A statistically impressive association may be much less persuasive if the design cannot support the inference being made. A useful-looking intervention may not transfer easily to your context if the original sample or implementation conditions differ substantially.
Starting with the methods therefore makes particular sense when the validity, reproducibility, applicability, or adaptation of the research procedure is your main concern.
That does not mean methods should always be read first. During initial screening, detailed methods may be unnecessary. The better principle is to know when methodological detail becomes important enough to require close reading.
Start with the results when you want to see the evidence before the interpretation
If your main question is "What did they actually find?", the results section is the obvious place to investigate. This is where empirical papers typically report the observations, estimates, comparisons, statistical tests, themes, models, or other analytical outputs that constitute the study's findings.
Carey and colleagues emphasize examining figures and tables closely and asking what the results show. Their broader argument is that active reading should distinguish the reported evidence from the authors' subsequent interpretation of it.
For some papers, starting with figures and tables can provide a particularly efficient route into the results. A graph may reveal the major pattern, a table may show the size and direction of an association, or a qualitative results table may organize themes and illustrative material. You can then read the accompanying results text to understand how the authors report those findings.
But reading the results first creates its own questions. What exactly was measured? Who contributed the data? What does the comparison group represent? Was this analysis planned? What assumptions underlie the model?
Those questions send you back to the methods. That movement is not evidence that you chose the wrong starting point. It is how active reading often works.
Start with the discussion when you need the authors' interpretation quickly
The discussion can be useful when your immediate goal is to understand what the authors believe their study contributes. It commonly interprets the principal findings, relates them to earlier research, considers possible explanations, discusses implications, and acknowledges limitations.
If you are surveying a field or returning to a paper you already know, reading the discussion early may quickly remind you why the paper matters. It may also help you identify the larger scholarly conversation into which the authors place their findings.
The risk is that the discussion can frame your interpretation before you have examined the evidence yourself.

How the authors interpret those findings and position their meaning.
The distinction is essential. Authors may offer plausible explanations, theoretical interpretations, practical implications, or causal language that extends beyond what a particular design can firmly establish. That does not make the discussion untrustworthy. It means its claims should be evaluated in relation to the evidence.
If an interpretation matters to your own argument, the next question is not merely whether it sounds convincing but whether the authors' interpretation is adequately supported.
The introduction is still important even if you do not start there
The title of this guide emphasizes the abstract, methods, results, and discussion, but the introduction should not disappear from your reading strategy. It typically establishes the research problem, summarizes relevant prior scholarship, develops the rationale for the study, and leads toward the research objective, question, or hypothesis.
If you are unfamiliar with the topic, theoretical framework, terminology, or disciplinary debate, the introduction may need early attention. A specialist may be able to skim material that a newcomer needs to read carefully.
Conversely, if you already understand the background and are looking for one methodological detail, reading the entire introduction first may add little to your immediate task.
This is another reason rigid reading sequences are difficult to defend. What counts as necessary context depends partly on what the reader already knows.
A good starting point does not lock you into a fixed sequence
Research reading is often recursive rather than linear. You may begin with the abstract, inspect a figure, move to the methods to understand it, return to the results, read the discussion, and then revisit the introduction because the authors invoke a theory you now realize is important.
That may look untidy compared with reading from page one to the references, but it reflects the structure of inquiry. Each answer generates another question.
Question What is this paper about?
Abstract It appears relevant, but one reported finding is especially important.
Results What exactly does the evidence show?
Methods How was that outcome measured and analyzed?
Discussion Does the authors' interpretation fit what I now understand about the evidence?
This question-driven movement is compatible with broader strategies for reading research papers efficiently. Efficiency does not require a universal reading order. It requires directing attention toward information that serves your purpose.
Your first pass and your deep reading do not need the same order
A further distinction helps resolve much of the disagreement about where to start: the best sequence for screening a paper does not have to be the best sequence for critically evaluating it.
S. Keshav's well-known three-pass approach makes a similar distinction by increasing reading depth across successive passes. The first pass is designed to obtain an overall sense of the paper and decide whether further reading is warranted. Later passes involve progressively closer engagement.
Likewise, you might initially read an abstract and discussion to determine whether a paper matters to you, then return later and work carefully through the methods, figures, and results because the paper has become central to your research.
There is no contradiction. You are performing two different reading tasks.
Not every paper follows the same architecture
The familiar introduction-methods-results-discussion structure is common in empirical scientific research, but it is not universal. Qualitative papers may integrate findings and discussion. Some journals combine results and discussion. Theoretical papers may be organized around arguments rather than empirical sections. Review articles, methodological papers, humanities scholarship, registered reports, brief reports, and other publication types may require different routes.
Before applying any reading-order advice mechanically, identify what kind of paper you have opened and how it is organized.
Even the best map is less useful when you are holding a different map. Academia occasionally permits such excitement.
