Should Every Concept in Your Study Appear in the Conceptual Framework?

A conceptual framework should represent the concepts needed to explain or organize the study, not every concept mentioned in the manuscript. Inclusion should be driven by the research question, conceptual logic, and the role each concept actually plays.

01 · The Question

If a Concept Matters to Your Study, Does It Belong in the Framework?

A research project can contain many concepts. Some appear in the research questions. Others arise in the literature review. You may collect demographic characteristics, control variables, contextual information, methodological variables, and additional factors needed to describe the sample or interpret the findings.

Should all of them appear in the conceptual framework?

Usually, no. A conceptual framework is selective. Its purpose is to make the conceptual logic of the study visible, not to inventory everything the researcher knows, measures, mentions, or collects.

The difficult part is deciding where to draw the boundary.

Include Concepts That Are Necessary to Represent the Logic of the Study

No. Not every concept mentioned, measured, or discussed in your study needs to appear in the conceptual framework; include the concepts that are necessary to represent the phenomenon, relationships, or explanatory structure that the framework is intended to organize.

A concept may still matter elsewhere in the research without belonging in the framework. The decision depends on its role in the research question and conceptual argument, not simply on whether you collected data about it.

03 · What You Need to Know

How to Decide Which Concepts Actually Belong in the Framework

Conceptual frameworks are used differently across research traditions, so there is no universal rule specifying exactly what every framework must contain. Jabareen characterizes a conceptual framework as a network of interlinked concepts that collectively provide an understanding of a phenomenon, while methodological discussions in education emphasize making terminology and the connections among concepts explicit. These formulations point toward selection and organization rather than exhaustive inclusion.

Start With What the Framework Is Supposed to Explain or Organize

The first question is not “What variables do I have?” It is “What conceptual structure does the reader need to understand this study?”

In a quantitative study, that structure may center on an outcome and the predictors, mediators, moderators, or other factors hypothesized to relate to it. In qualitative research, the framework may instead organize sensitizing concepts, processes, perspectives, or contextual dimensions that guide inquiry and interpretation.

The precise form varies, but the same principle applies: a concept belongs because it performs a meaningful role in the framework's account of the study.

Concepts Central to the Research Questions Usually Deserve Strong Consideration

If a concept is explicitly central to a research question or hypothesis, omitting it from the framework may create a mismatch between what the framework says matters and what the research actually investigates.

Suppose your study asks whether perceived usefulness and AI self-efficacy are associated with instructors' intention to use generative AI. Those concepts are not peripheral details. They constitute the relationship being investigated and would ordinarily be represented in a framework intended to map that relationship.

This does not mean that every noun appearing in a research question becomes a separate box. The framework should represent concepts at the level needed to communicate the study's logic.

A Concept Can Matter Without Being a Focal Concept

Researchers often collect information that is important but conceptually peripheral.

Consider age, academic rank, years of teaching experience, discipline, institution type, and previous AI training. These characteristics may be needed to describe participants. Some may also be included in statistical models or used to examine subgroup differences.

That alone does not require each one to appear prominently in the conceptual framework.

The deciding issue is the role assigned to the concept. If academic rank is simply reported to describe the sample, it may remain outside the framework. If the study proposes that academic rank systematically changes the relationship between AI self-efficacy and adoption intention, it has acquired a conceptual role and may warrant representation.

Being Measured Does Not Automatically Make Something Conceptual

This distinction becomes particularly important in quantitative research.

Your dataset may contain twenty variables while your conceptual framework contains five major constructs. There is nothing inherently inconsistent about that. Some variables may operationalize a broader construct, some may be controls, and others may describe the sample.

For example, a construct such as institutional support might be measured through several questionnaire items. The framework ordinarily represents the construct, not every survey item used to measure it.

Similarly, including age as a covariate in a regression model does not necessarily mean that age belongs alongside the central constructs in the conceptual framework.

Contextual Factors Need a Conceptual Reason for Inclusion

Context can be essential to understanding a phenomenon. Institutional resources, disciplinary norms, national policy, socioeconomic conditions, or technological infrastructure may shape how relationships operate.

When such factors form part of your explanation, representing them may substantially improve the framework. When they merely describe where the study took place, placing them in the framework can add visual complexity without adding conceptual meaning.

The relevant distinction is explored more fully when deciding whether contextual or background factors belong in the framework.

Not Everything in the Literature Review Belongs in the Framework

A literature review normally has broader coverage than a conceptual framework. It may explain competing theories, historical developments, related findings, methodological disagreements, contextual evidence, and concepts that help establish the research gap.

The framework distills that broader scholarship into the conceptual structure needed for the present study.

This is why the literature and other scholarly sources can inform the framework without every idea encountered during the review becoming part of it.

Relevant to the literature review The concept helps establish what is known, disputed, missing, or important about the broader research problem.
Necessary in the conceptual framework The concept performs a specific role in representing the logic, relationships, boundaries, or phenomenon that orient the present study.

Every Additional Concept Creates Conceptual Obligations

Adding a box is easy. Explaining what that box means is more demanding.

Once a concept enters the framework, readers can reasonably ask why it is there, how it is defined, where it came from, how it relates to the other concepts, and what role it plays in the research.

If it is connected by an arrow, further questions arise. What does that relationship mean? Is it association, influence, sequence, mediation, moderation, feedback, or something else? What supports it?

Consequently, unnecessary concepts do more than make a diagram crowded. They enlarge the intellectual argument the researcher must defend.

Parsimony Does Not Mean Making the Framework Artificially Small

Selection should not become oversimplification.

If a study genuinely examines a complex phenomenon operating across individual, institutional, and environmental levels, representing only two variables for the sake of a clean diagram may misrepresent the study.

The aim is therefore not minimalism for its own sake. It is conceptual economy: include enough to represent the study faithfully, but not so much that the framework loses explanatory focus.

When the number of concepts begins to interfere with interpretation, the issue becomes one of how complex the conceptual framework actually needs to be.

04 · A Practical Example

Separating Study Variables From Framework Concepts

Hypothetical Example

A study of faculty adoption of generative AI

Suppose a researcher investigates whether perceived usefulness, AI self-efficacy, and institutional support are associated with instructors' intention to use generative AI for teaching.

The survey also records age, sex, academic rank, discipline, years of teaching experience, employment status, and previous generative AI training.

Identify the focal outcome Intention to use generative AI is the phenomenon the proposed relationships are intended to explain.
Identify the main explanatory concepts Perceived usefulness, AI self-efficacy, and institutional support are explicitly part of the study's conceptual explanation and therefore belong in the framework.
Examine the background variables Age, sex, rank, discipline, and teaching experience are collected to characterize the sample. Unless the study assigns them an explanatory, moderating, contextual, or other conceptual role, they need not become separate framework elements.
Consider previous AI training If previous training is merely reported descriptively, it can remain outside the framework. If the researcher hypothesizes that training influences AI self-efficacy or adoption intention, it now has a conceptual function and may belong.
Check alignment The resulting framework shows the concepts needed to understand the proposed explanation without reproducing the entire questionnaire as a diagram.

This distinction can make a framework substantially easier to interpret. It also forces the researcher to decide what each variable is actually doing in the study rather than assuming that measurement automatically establishes conceptual importance.

Common Mistakes When Deciding What to Include

Misconception

Every Variable in the Questionnaire Needs a Box

A questionnaire operationalizes the study and may collect descriptive, control, screening, or measurement information beyond the focal concepts. The conceptual framework represents conceptual logic, not the questionnaire's table of contents.

Misconception

All Demographic Variables Should Appear in the Framework

Demographic characteristics do not automatically have conceptual roles. Include them when the framework makes a substantive claim about their relevance, such as a proposed explanatory, moderating, or contextual function. Otherwise, they can simply be reported as participant characteristics.

Misconception

Anything Discussed in the Literature Review Must Appear

The literature review establishes the broader scholarly context. The framework is necessarily more selective. A concept can help explain the research gap or contextualize the problem without becoming part of the study's focal conceptual structure.

A More Detailed Framework Is Automatically More Rigorous

Detail can improve precision when it represents meaningful distinctions. It can also obscure the central argument. Rigor depends on conceptual clarity, justification, and alignment, not the number of shapes displayed.

If a Concept Is Important, It Must Be Shown Visually

Conceptual frameworks do not always have to communicate every relevant qualification through the diagram itself. Some distinctions, assumptions, and contextual boundaries may be explained more accurately in the accompanying narrative. The visual representation should not be asked to carry more information than it can communicate clearly.

Give Every Concept a Job Before Giving It a Place in the Framework

For every concept you are considering, identify what it contributes to the conceptual argument. If you cannot describe its function, that is a useful signal that it may not belong.

A simple decision framework

If the concept is central to a research question, hypothesis, or phenomenon being explained
It will usually need representation in the framework.
If the concept explains, mediates, moderates, or meaningfully conditions a focal relationship
Consider including it and make its role explicit.
If the concept merely describes the sample
Keep it outside the framework unless the study assigns it a substantive conceptual role.
If it is a measurement item or operational detail
Usually explain it in the methods rather than representing it as a separate conceptual element.
If removing the concept does not change the explanation communicated by the framework
Ask whether it is genuinely necessary.

This selection process is part of constructing the conceptual framework itself. The finished framework should make the study easier to understand, not require a guided tour through every variable in the dataset.

Does Each Concept Earn Its Place?

For every concept you plan to include, check:
Can I explain its specific role in the conceptual logic of the study?
Is it directly relevant to a research question, hypothesis, or central phenomenon?
Can I define the concept clearly enough to distinguish it from related concepts?
Is its inclusion supported by relevant theory, empirical evidence, conceptual literature, or a defensible contextual rationale?
If it is connected to another concept, can I explain what that connection means?
Am I including it because it is conceptually important rather than merely because I measured it?
Would removing it materially change what the framework communicates?
Does the overall framework remain understandable after all necessary concepts are included?

Questions About Which Concepts Belong in a Conceptual Framework

Should all variables in my study appear in the conceptual framework?

No. Variables used only for sample description, screening, statistical control, or operational purposes may not need to appear. Include those that play a meaningful role in the conceptual structure the framework is intended to communicate.

Should demographic variables appear in a conceptual framework?

Only when they have a meaningful conceptual role. If age or academic rank merely describes the participants, it may remain outside the framework. If the study proposes that it influences or modifies a focal relationship, inclusion may be appropriate.

Do all concepts in my research questions need to appear?

Concepts central to the questions the framework is intended to organize will usually need representation. However, how they are represented depends on the type and purpose of the framework, so there is no mechanical one-question-one-box rule.

Should control variables appear in the conceptual framework?

Not automatically. A variable can be statistically controlled without being central to the conceptual argument. Include it when its role is substantively important to understanding the proposed relationships or when omitting it would misrepresent the model.

Can a concept be discussed in the paper without appearing in the framework?

Yes. Many concepts may be needed to establish background, explain previous findings, describe the context, justify methods, or interpret results without being focal elements of the conceptual framework.

Is there an ideal number of concepts for a conceptual framework?

No universal number applies. The framework should contain enough concepts to represent the study accurately while remaining interpretable and aligned with the research questions and design. The appropriate level of complexity depends on the phenomenon and purpose of the framework.

Your Framework Should Show the Study's Logic, Not Everything in the Study

The Bottom Line

Not every concept, variable, demographic characteristic, or measurement in your study belongs in the conceptual framework; include the concepts necessary to communicate the conceptual logic that actually orients the research.

Give every proposed concept a clear function. If it does not help represent the phenomenon, explain a focal relationship, establish an important boundary, or otherwise contribute to the framework's purpose, it may belong elsewhere in the study rather than in the framework.
