Can a Conceptual Framework Be Based on Previous Research Instead of a Theory?

Previous research can provide a substantial foundation for a conceptual framework when studies collectively identify relevant concepts and relationships. The key is synthesis rather than copying variables from individual studies.

01 · The Question

Can Previous Studies Provide the Foundation for Your Framework?

Sometimes the literature surrounding a research problem is rich in empirical studies but does not converge on one formal theory. You may find that previous researchers have repeatedly examined the concepts that matter to your study, and their findings provide plausible evidence for relationships you want to investigate.

Can those studies become the basis of your conceptual framework, or must you keep searching until you find a theory?

Previous research can indeed provide substantial intellectual support for a conceptual framework. The important qualification is that a framework should emerge from a reasoned synthesis of the evidence, not from collecting variables from published studies and arranging them into a new diagram.

Yes, Previous Research Can Provide the Framework's Empirical Foundation

In Brief

Yes. A conceptual framework can be based substantially on previous research when the literature provides a coherent empirical and conceptual basis for the concepts and relationships relevant to your study.

You still need to synthesize the evidence, evaluate its relevance and limitations, and explain why the resulting framework fits your research problem. Previous studies should inform the framework rather than function as a pile of citations attached to boxes and arrows.

03 · What You Need to Know

How Previous Research Can Become a Conceptual Framework

One Previous Study Is Not the Same as a Body of Evidence

Suppose you find a published study with variables almost identical to yours. It may be tempting to reproduce its framework and change only the population or setting.

That can sometimes be justified if your study is explicitly replicating, extending, or testing that framework in another context. But a single paper should not automatically become the intellectual foundation of a new study simply because its diagram is convenient.

A stronger approach is to examine the wider literature. Ask whether other studies support the same concepts and relationships, whether contradictory evidence exists, whether definitions are consistent, and whether findings differ across populations or settings.

The framework then represents your synthesis of a body of knowledge rather than your dependence on one convenient article.

Empirical Studies Can Identify Concepts Worth Considering

Previous studies can reveal which factors have repeatedly been associated with the phenomenon you are investigating.

Imagine that you are studying university instructors' adoption of generative AI. Across the literature, you find studies examining AI literacy, perceived usefulness, institutional support, perceived risk, self-efficacy, workload, and disciplinary differences.

Those findings create a pool of potentially relevant concepts. They do not establish that every concept belongs in your framework.

You still need to ask whether each one addresses your particular research question and whether your design can meaningfully examine it. This distinction prevents the literature review from becoming an automatic variable-selection machine.

Previous Studies Can Support Proposed Relationships

Empirical literature is particularly useful when a conceptual framework proposes relationships between concepts.

If multiple relevant studies report an association between institutional support and instructors' technology adoption, for example, that evidence may help justify representing a relationship between those concepts in your framework.

The strength of that justification depends on what the studies actually establish. Cross-sectional correlations, qualitative accounts, longitudinal evidence, experiments, and systematic reviews do not support identical claims.

Watch Out

Do not turn association into causation when translating previous findings into a framework. If studies show that two variables are correlated, an arrow labeled or interpreted as a causal effect requires additional justification. The graphical simplicity of an arrow can conceal a surprisingly large inferential claim.

This is why the researcher should know both what an arrow in the framework is intended to represent and what evidence supports that relationship.

Conflicting Findings Can Be Useful Rather Than Inconvenient

Researchers sometimes assume that only consistent findings can support a framework. In reality, disagreement in the literature may provide a particularly strong reason to investigate a relationship.

Suppose some studies report that AI literacy predicts responsible AI use while others find weak or context-dependent relationships. You should not select only the positive findings to make the framework look established.

Instead, the framework can represent the relationship as one that warrants examination precisely because the existing evidence remains unsettled. Your accompanying explanation should make that uncertainty clear.

A conceptual framework does not have to pretend that the literature already knows the answer to the question your study is designed to investigate.

Context Determines How Far Previous Findings Can Travel

Evidence does not move automatically from one population or setting to another.

A relationship observed among undergraduate students in one country may not operate identically among university instructors elsewhere. Findings about technology adoption before widespread generative AI use may not map perfectly onto decisions involving systems with different pedagogical, ethical, privacy, and reliability concerns.

When evaluating previous studies, examine the population, institutional setting, discipline, technology, measurement approach, and other contextual conditions that could matter.

This does not mean evidence from a different context is useless. It means transfer requires argument rather than assumption. Relevant contextual factors can sometimes be represented explicitly when they are integral to how the phenomenon is expected to operate.

The Literature Review and Conceptual Framework Have Different Jobs

The literature review may discuss many studies, debates, theories, methodological approaches, and contextual issues. The conceptual framework is more selective.

Its job is not to display everything you learned. It identifies and organizes the conceptual elements needed to orient the study.

Literature review Examines, evaluates, and synthesizes the broader scholarly knowledge relevant to the research problem.
Conceptual framework Selects and organizes the concepts and relationships that specifically orient the present study.

Consequently, a concept can be important enough to discuss in the literature review without being important enough to appear in the framework. Deciding which concepts actually belong in the conceptual framework requires returning repeatedly to the research question.

Synthesis Is the Step That Turns Literature Into a Framework

Finding ten studies does not give you a conceptual framework. Neither does creating a table of variables used in those studies.

The intellectual work occurs when you compare the studies and ask what their combined evidence suggests.

You may discover that different papers use different names for similar concepts. Others may define the same term differently. Some relationships may have strong evidence, others tentative support. Certain findings may apply only under particular contextual conditions.

Jabareen's approach to conceptual framework analysis illustrates this broader principle by treating framework development as an iterative process of identifying, categorizing, synthesizing, and integrating concepts from relevant bodies of literature.

The result should therefore be more than an inventory. It should express your reasoned understanding of how the relevant concepts fit together around the research problem.

Theory Can Still Contribute Even When Previous Research Is the Main Basis

“Based on previous research instead of a theory” can create a false choice.

Empirical studies themselves often draw on theories. A body of previous research may also reveal that certain theoretical ideas explain some relationships even if no single theory organizes your entire framework.

You can therefore use previous empirical research as the primary foundation while drawing selectively on theoretical literature where it improves explanation.

Likewise, building a conceptual framework without adopting one formal theory does not require excluding theoretical knowledge altogether.

Match the Framework to What Your Study Will Actually Examine

A common consequence of literature-driven framework construction is overexpansion. Every newly discovered predictor becomes another box. Every reported association becomes another arrow.

Eventually, the framework may contain more relationships than the research questions, sample, instruments, or analytical strategy can realistically address.

The solution is not to stop reading. It is to distinguish between evidence that helps you understand the broader phenomenon and evidence that justifies elements your study actually needs.

This becomes especially important when deciding whether the framework should show only relationships you plan to examine.

From a Literature Review to a Study-Specific Framework

Hypothetical Example

Building a framework for faculty adoption of generative AI

A researcher wants to examine factors associated with university instructors' intention to use generative AI in teaching. No single theory captures all the educational, technological, and institutional issues relevant to the study.

Map the evidence The researcher reviews relevant empirical studies and records the concepts examined, how they were defined, the populations studied, and the relationships reported.
Look for patterns Perceived usefulness, AI self-efficacy, institutional support, and perceived risk recur across sufficiently relevant studies. Other factors appear only in settings substantially different from the target context.
Evaluate the findings Evidence for perceived usefulness is relatively consistent. Findings concerning perceived risk are mixed, while institutional support appears particularly relevant in higher-education settings.
Return to the research question The researcher removes concepts that are interesting but peripheral to the specific outcome being investigated.
Construct the framework The remaining concepts and proposed relationships are organized into a study-specific framework, with the literature used to explain why each was included and where uncertainty remains.

The researcher has not “copied the literature.” The framework is an analytical synthesis of it.

Notice also that mixed evidence does not require deleting a relationship. If the study is designed to investigate whether that relationship exists in the new context, uncertainty in previous findings may be part of the justification for examining it.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Building a Framework From Previous Studies

Misconception

If Three Studies Used a Variable, You Should Include It Too

There is no meaningful citation threshold that automatically qualifies a concept for inclusion. Relevance to your research problem, conceptual clarity, evidentiary support, and fit with the study design matter more than how many times you encountered the variable.

Misconception

You Should Copy the Framework From the Study Closest to Yours

A closely related study can provide a useful starting point, particularly for replication or extension, but similarity does not eliminate the need to examine the wider evidence base and determine whether the framework fits your population, context, questions, and methods.

Misconception

Only Statistically Significant Findings Belong in the Framework

Statistical significance is not a framework-selection rule. Effect estimates, uncertainty, study design, replication, theoretical plausibility, measurement quality, and contextual relevance all matter. Mixed or null findings can also identify relationships worth investigating further.

Misconception

Enough Empirical Studies Make Theory Irrelevant

Empirical findings tell you what has been observed under particular conditions. Theory can help explain why patterns occur and under what conditions they might change. Even when no single formal theory organizes the framework, theoretical reasoning may still improve its explanatory coherence.

Every Relationship Reported in the Literature Should Become an Arrow

A study-specific framework should remain aligned with what your research intends to understand or examine. Adding every reported relationship can produce a diagram that is comprehensive in appearance but conceptually unfocused and methodologically unmanageable.

Use Previous Research as Evidence, Not as a Variable Shopping List

If empirical literature will provide the main foundation for your conceptual framework, approach it as a synthesis problem. Your task is to determine what the body of evidence collectively warrants, where it remains uncertain, and which parts are genuinely relevant to your study.

A simple decision framework

If one previous framework closely matches your study
Examine the broader literature before deciding whether to adopt, adapt, or extend it.
If a concept appears repeatedly across relevant studies
Evaluate its definition, evidentiary support, and relevance to your research question before including it.
If studies consistently report a relationship
Determine what kind of relationship their designs actually support and avoid making a stronger claim than the evidence warrants.
If findings are inconsistent
Investigate possible methodological or contextual explanations and consider whether the uncertainty itself justifies examining the relationship.
If the literature suggests more concepts than your study can reasonably address
Prioritize those most directly connected to the research question and design.

When you can explain not merely which studies mention a concept but why the accumulated evidence makes that concept relevant to your particular research problem, you have moved from literature collection toward framework construction.

That synthesis can then be translated into a coherent structure using the broader process for building a conceptual framework for a study.

Is the Evidence Strong Enough to Inform Your Framework?

Before basing your framework on previous research, check:
Have I reviewed a sufficiently relevant body of research rather than relying on one convenient study?
Have I compared how different studies define and measure the concepts I want to use?
Have I examined conflicting and null findings rather than selecting only evidence that supports my expected framework?
Do the populations and contexts of previous studies provide a reasonable basis for application to my research setting?
Am I distinguishing evidence of association from evidence that can support causal or directional claims?
Can I explain why each included concept is relevant to my research question?
Does each proposed relationship have an appropriate empirical or conceptual rationale?
Have I synthesized the evidence rather than simply listing which authors used each variable?
Does the resulting framework remain feasible for the study I actually plan to conduct?

Questions About Using Previous Research as the Basis of a Framework

How many previous studies do I need to support a conceptual framework?

There is no universal minimum number. The adequacy of the evidence depends on the research problem, maturity of the literature, nature of the proposed claims, and relevance and quality of available studies. A numerical threshold would provide false precision.

Can I use one previous study as my conceptual framework?

You can adopt or adapt an existing framework when there is a clear scholarly reason, such as replication or extension. Even then, you should normally examine the broader literature and justify why that framework remains appropriate for your study.

Do all previous studies need to agree?

No. Conflicting findings may reveal contextual differences, measurement problems, methodological variation, or genuine uncertainty. Rather than hiding disagreement, explain it and consider whether resolving that uncertainty is part of the purpose of your study.

Can systematic reviews or meta-analyses inform a conceptual framework?

Yes. When relevant and methodologically sound, evidence syntheses can be particularly useful for identifying recurring relationships and assessing the consistency of findings. You should still determine whether their populations, constructs, and scope fit your research problem.

Can qualitative studies support relationships in a conceptual framework?

Yes, depending on what the framework claims. Qualitative research can provide important evidence about processes, mechanisms, meanings, conditions, and participants' accounts of relationships. Do not treat qualitative evidence as though it necessarily establishes statistical association or causal effects.

Should I cite every study that supports each relationship?

Not necessarily. The goal is to represent the evidence accurately, not maximize citation count. Cite the most relevant and authoritative evidence and synthesize broader patterns where appropriate rather than attaching an indiscriminate citation list to every statement.

What if new evidence contradicts the framework I built from earlier studies?

That does not automatically mean the study failed. Frameworks are intellectual propositions rather than guaranteed descriptions of reality. Evidence that challenges the expected structure can require revision, reinterpretation, or qualification of the framework.
