Where Does a Conceptual Framework Actually Come From?

A conceptual framework is not simply taken from one theory or copied from a previous study. It is constructed by the researcher from relevant concepts, theories, empirical research, and reasoned connections that fit the research problem.

01 · The Question

If You Have to Create the Framework, Where Do Its Ideas Come From?

You know that your study needs a conceptual framework, but then comes the less obvious question: where are you supposed to get it?

Researchers sometimes search for a ready-made framework that matches their topic. Others assume that the framework must come from a single established theory. Still others draw boxes for their variables, connect them with arrows, and only afterward look for literature that might justify the diagram.

Each approach misses something important. A conceptual framework is constructed, but that does not mean it is invented freely. Its concepts and proposed connections should have defensible intellectual sources.

The more useful question, therefore, is not simply “Where can I find a conceptual framework?” It is “What sources should inform the framework I construct for this particular research problem?”

02 · The Short Answer

A Conceptual Framework Is Usually Constructed From Several Sources

In Brief

A conceptual framework usually comes from the researcher's synthesis of relevant theory, established concepts, previous empirical research, and reasoned understanding of the research problem rather than from a single source that is simply copied into the study.

Which sources matter most depends on the study. Some frameworks are strongly theory-informed, while others emerge primarily from patterns in previous research or from several bodies of literature brought together for a particular problem.

03 · What You Need to Know

The Main Sources That Can Inform a Conceptual Framework

There is no universal recipe stating that a conceptual framework must contain a particular proportion of theory, empirical evidence, and researcher reasoning. Different methodological traditions also use the term conceptual framework somewhat differently.

A useful starting point is to think of framework development as synthesis. Jabareen, for example, describes a conceptual framework as a network of interlinked concepts and presents its development as a process of theorization rather than the simple accumulation of concepts. His method begins by mapping relevant multidisciplinary literature and progressively identifying and integrating concepts. This illustrates an important principle: frameworks are constructed through intellectual work on relevant knowledge, not retrieved intact from a source.

1. The Research Problem Gives the Framework Its Direction

Before deciding which theories or studies belong in a framework, begin with the problem the research is trying to understand. The problem does not by itself provide evidence for a relationship, but it determines what kinds of concepts and explanations are relevant enough to investigate.

Suppose you are studying why university instructors differ in their willingness to use generative AI for teaching. That problem immediately directs attention toward concepts that might help explain adoption: perceived usefulness, confidence, institutional support, concerns about risk, disciplinary norms, or other relevant factors. It does not establish that all of those concepts belong in the final framework. It tells you where to begin looking.

This is one reason a framework should not be assembled by collecting interesting variables from unrelated papers. The framework needs a center of gravity, and that center is the phenomenon or problem your study is designed to investigate.

2. Formal Theories Can Supply Concepts and Proposed Relationships

An established theory may provide concepts, mechanisms, propositions, or expected relationships that help explain the research problem. When a theory closely matches what you are investigating, it can provide substantial structure for the framework.

For example, a researcher examining technology adoption might encounter an established theory containing constructs relevant to how people evaluate and adopt technology. Rather than starting with an empty page, the researcher can consider whether those constructs and relationships meaningfully apply to the population, technology, and context being studied.

But theory is a possible source, not automatically the sole source. A conceptual framework may draw on one theory, combine compatible ideas from several theoretical perspectives, or be constructed without adopting a single formal theory as its organizing foundation. The question of whether a formal theory is necessary therefore requires a more nuanced answer than simply “yes” or “no.”

3. Previous Empirical Research Can Show Which Concepts and Relationships Matter

Published empirical studies are another important source. They show what researchers have already investigated, how concepts have been defined or operationalized, which relationships have received empirical support, where findings conflict, and which factors may have been overlooked.

This is not the same as copying the framework from a previous paper. A study conducted in another population or context may contain useful evidence without providing an appropriate framework for your own research.

Instead, you synthesize across studies. If several relevant studies repeatedly identify a particular construct, that recurrence may provide a reason to consider it. If studies report a relationship between two concepts, those findings may help justify examining that relationship. Contradictory findings can also be informative because uncertainty itself may provide a reason for further investigation.

A framework can therefore be substantially grounded in previous empirical research rather than a single formal theory, provided that the synthesis is intellectually coherent and appropriate to the research question.

4. Established Concepts Can Come From Different Bodies of Literature

Your research problem may sit at the intersection of several literatures rather than inside one established theoretical tradition.

Imagine a study of doctoral students' use of generative AI when writing dissertations. Relevant concepts might come from research on self-regulated learning, academic integrity, AI literacy, research self-efficacy, supervisory practices, and institutional policy. No single source necessarily contains the exact conceptual combination needed by the study.

This is especially relevant for interdisciplinary problems. Jabareen's conceptual framework analysis explicitly treats multidisciplinary bodies of knowledge as material from which concepts can be identified, categorized, synthesized, and integrated into a framework.

The resulting framework is not a random mixture of concepts. Each inclusion needs a rationale connected to the phenomenon being investigated.

5. Context Can Influence What Belongs in the Framework

A relationship observed in one setting may operate differently in another. Institutional policies, resources, cultural expectations, regulatory environments, disciplinary practices, socioeconomic conditions, or technological infrastructure can alter how a phenomenon unfolds.

Context therefore matters when determining which concepts deserve attention. A study of online learning participation in a well-resourced metropolitan university, for instance, may require a different set of contextual considerations from a study conducted in institutions where connectivity and device access remain substantial constraints.

Context should not become an excuse to add every demographic or environmental characteristic imaginable. The researcher still needs to determine which contextual or background factors belong in the conceptual framework and which are merely descriptive characteristics of the study.

6. Researcher Reasoning Connects the Sources

This part is easy to overlook because researchers are often told that everything in a framework must “come from the literature.” The statement is partly right but can be misunderstood.

The literature supplies evidence, concepts, theoretical propositions, definitions, and prior interpretations. It does not usually hand you the exact framework required for your study. You still have to decide what is relevant, what can reasonably be combined, what should be excluded, and how the pieces relate to the research question.

That synthesis involves researcher judgment.

Judgment, however, is not the same as unsupported opinion. The reasoning should be visible enough that another researcher can understand why the selected concepts and relationships belong together. Jabareen similarly treats conceptual framework construction as an iterative analytical process involving movement between concepts and evidence rather than mechanical extraction from texts.

Evidence supplies the intellectual basis Theories, concepts, prior studies, and relevant contextual knowledge provide reasons for including particular elements or relationships.

The Sources Do Not All Have to Contribute Equally

Frameworks can differ substantially in where their intellectual weight lies.

A theory-driven study might derive much of its framework from an established theoretical model and use empirical literature mainly to establish its relevance. Another study may find no theory that adequately captures the problem and instead synthesize concepts and findings across several research traditions.

Neither approach is inherently stronger. What matters is whether the framework has a defensible relationship with the research problem and the knowledge on which it claims to build.

Every Element Should Have a Reason for Being There

Once you understand that frameworks can draw from multiple sources, another problem can appear: the temptation to include everything you encounter.

A concept should not enter the framework merely because it appeared in the literature review. Similarly, a relationship should not be represented merely because it seems plausible.

For each element, ask two different questions:

  • Relevance: Does this concept help represent or explain the phenomenon my study addresses?
  • Support: What theoretical reasoning, empirical evidence, conceptual argument, or contextual justification supports its inclusion?

This distinction becomes particularly important when deciding which concepts should actually appear in the framework. Your literature review will almost always discuss more ideas than your conceptual framework needs to represent.

The same scrutiny should be applied to relationships. Putting an arrow between two boxes makes a substantive claim about how those concepts are connected. The precise evidentiary expectations depend on what the arrow represents, but researchers should be able to explain the reasoning behind each relationship represented in the framework.

04 · A Practical Example

How Several Sources Can Become One Coherent Framework

Hypothetical Example

Explaining university instructors' adoption of generative AI

Suppose a researcher wants to investigate what influences university instructors' intention to use generative AI for teaching. After reviewing the literature, the researcher finds several potentially relevant sources rather than one ready-made framework.

Research problem Faculty members appear to differ considerably in whether and how they intend to incorporate generative AI into their teaching.
Theoretical literature Technology-adoption literature suggests that instructors' perceptions of a technology's usefulness and usability may help explain adoption intentions.
Empirical research Studies of educational technology adoption repeatedly identify institutional support and individual confidence as potentially relevant factors.
Contextual literature Research and institutional discussions surrounding generative AI raise concerns about academic integrity, reliability, privacy, and appropriate pedagogical use that may be especially salient for this technology.
Researcher synthesis The researcher selects the concepts that most directly address the research question, specifies which relationships will actually be examined, and explains why those relationships are reasonable given the theoretical and empirical literature.
Result The resulting framework is specific to the study. It is informed by existing knowledge, but it is not simply reproduced from any one source.

Notice what happened. The researcher did not begin by drawing five boxes because five variables seemed manageable. Nor did the researcher search for a published diagram that could be copied unchanged. The framework emerged through a sequence of selection and synthesis.

The final structure should then be checked against the research questions, measures or data collection strategy, and intended analysis. A framework containing relationships that the study never intends to investigate may create expectations the research design cannot satisfy. This is why it is useful to distinguish between relationships that provide broad conceptual background and relationships the study actually plans to examine.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About Where Frameworks Come From

Misconception

You Need to Find an Existing Framework That Matches Your Study

You may find an existing framework that is highly relevant, but framework development does not require locating a diagram that somebody else has already created. Your task is to construct a defensible conceptual organization for your research problem. Existing frameworks can inform that work without dictating the final result.

Misconception

A Conceptual Framework Must Come From One Formal Theory

Some frameworks are closely derived from a particular theory, but conceptual frameworks can also synthesize multiple theoretical perspectives, established concepts, and empirical findings. Whether this is appropriate depends on the research problem and methodological approach.

Misconception

If a Variable Appears in Several Studies, It Automatically Belongs in Your Framework

Frequency in the literature can signal relevance, but it is not sufficient by itself. A concept should also make sense for your research question, population, context, and design. Otherwise, the framework can become a catalogue of everything previous researchers happened to measure.

Misconception

You Can Draw the Framework First and Find Supporting Studies Later

Starting with tentative ideas is normal, but treating the literature as post hoc decoration is risky. If the framework makes substantive claims about concepts or relationships, the researcher should investigate whether relevant theory, empirical findings, or other defensible reasoning supports those claims.

Combining Several Sources Means You Can Combine Anything

Synthesis still requires conceptual compatibility. Concepts may have different definitions, assumptions, levels of analysis, or theoretical origins. Before combining them, determine whether they can coherently address the same research problem and explain why their integration is justified.

The More Literature You Put Into the Framework, the Stronger It Becomes

A framework is selective by design. Adding concepts can make it more comprehensive, but it can also make the framework harder to interpret and impossible to investigate adequately. Strength comes from coherence and defensible selection, not from the number of boxes, arrows, theories, or citations.

06 · What This Means for You

Build From the Problem Outward, Not From the Diagram Backward

If you are developing a conceptual framework, resist the urge to begin with boxes and arrows. Begin by identifying what the study needs to understand and then trace the intellectual sources that can help you understand it.

A simple decision framework

If an established theory closely explains your research problem
Use it as a major source and determine whether the study requires additional concepts or contextual factors.
If no single theory adequately captures the problem
Examine relevant theoretical, conceptual, and empirical literatures and determine whether a coherent synthesis can be constructed.
If previous studies repeatedly identify relevant factors or relationships
Evaluate whether those findings apply to your research question and context rather than automatically importing them.
If you want to add a concept because it seems intuitively important
Search for its conceptual or empirical basis and articulate why it is necessary for the study.
If the framework keeps expanding as you review the literature
Return to the research question and remove elements that the study does not need to represent or investigate.

Eventually, you should be able to account for the intellectual origin of the important elements in your framework without pretending that the finished arrangement existed before you constructed it.

That distinction is fundamental: the sources inform the framework; they do not necessarily supply the framework in finished form.

Once the sources and relationships are defensible, you can focus on turning that synthesis into a coherent conceptual framework appropriate to the study.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Can You Trace Where Your Framework Came From?

Before finalizing your conceptual framework, check:
Can I explain the research problem that gives this framework its focus?
Have I identified the theories, concepts, or bodies of literature most relevant to that problem?
Have I examined empirical studies that support, challenge, or qualify the relationships I am considering?
Can I explain why each major concept belongs in this study rather than merely showing that it appears somewhere in the literature?
Have I considered whether features of the research context materially affect the framework?
If I combined ideas from different sources, have I checked that their definitions and assumptions are compatible?
Can I distinguish what comes from existing scholarship from what represents my own synthesis or proposed organization?
Does every major element help answer the research question, or have I included concepts simply because they seemed interesting?

Questions About the Sources of a Conceptual Framework

Does a conceptual framework have to come from a theory?

No. A formal theory can provide a strong foundation, but a conceptual framework may also synthesize concepts, previous empirical findings, and other relevant scholarship. What matters is that the resulting framework is coherent and defensible for the research problem.

Can I create my own conceptual framework?

Yes, in the sense that researchers often construct a framework tailored to their study. “Create,” however, should not mean inventing unsupported concepts and relationships. Your framework should be informed by relevant scholarship and transparent reasoning.

Can I copy a conceptual framework from another study?

You can adopt or adapt an existing framework when it genuinely fits your study and you appropriately acknowledge its source. You should still evaluate whether its concepts, assumptions, relationships, population, and context fit your own research rather than treating similarity of topic as sufficient justification.

Can literature review findings become part of my conceptual framework?

Yes. A synthesis of previous research can reveal recurring concepts, relationships, disagreements, and contextual conditions that inform framework development. The important step is synthesis: the framework should represent a reasoned interpretation of the literature rather than a list of variables collected from previous studies.

Can concepts in the framework come from different theories?

Potentially. Researchers should first examine whether the concepts can be combined coherently. Concepts drawn from different theories may carry different definitions, assumptions, or levels of analysis, so integration requires more justification than placing them together in the same diagram.

Do all relationships in the framework need published evidence?

Relationships should have a defensible rationale, but the nature and amount of evidence may vary with the study and with what the relationship is intended to represent. A proposed relationship may sometimes be precisely what the research is intended to investigate, so lack of conclusive prior evidence does not automatically make it inappropriate.

What if I cannot find one source containing all the concepts I need?

That is not necessarily a problem. Conceptual frameworks often require synthesis across several sources or bodies of literature. The key question is whether those concepts can be integrated coherently around the research problem, not whether they appeared together in one previous publication.

Your Framework Comes From Scholarship, but Its Final Form Comes From Synthesis

The Bottom Line

A conceptual framework usually comes from a reasoned synthesis of the research problem, relevant theories and concepts, previous empirical evidence, and contextual knowledge rather than from one source that you simply reproduce.

Your responsibility is to make that synthesis defensible. You should be able to explain where the important concepts and relationships came from, why they belong in this particular study, and how your framework organizes existing knowledge to address the question you actually intend to investigate.
