If You Have to Create the Framework, Where Do Its Ideas Come From?
You know that your study needs a conceptual framework, but then comes the less obvious question: where are you supposed to get it?
Researchers sometimes search for a ready-made framework that matches their topic. Others assume that the framework must come from a single established theory. Still others draw boxes for their variables, connect them with arrows, and only afterward look for literature that might justify the diagram.
Each approach misses something important. A conceptual framework is constructed, but that does not mean it is invented freely. Its concepts and proposed connections should have defensible intellectual sources.
The more useful question, therefore, is not simply “Where can I find a conceptual framework?” It is “What sources should inform the framework I construct for this particular research problem?”

The Main Sources That Can Inform a Conceptual Framework
There is no universal recipe stating that a conceptual framework must contain a particular proportion of theory, empirical evidence, and researcher reasoning. Different methodological traditions also use the term conceptual framework somewhat differently.
A useful starting point is to think of framework development as synthesis. Jabareen, for example, describes a conceptual framework as a network of interlinked concepts and presents its development as a process of theorization rather than the simple accumulation of concepts. His method begins by mapping relevant multidisciplinary literature and progressively identifying and integrating concepts. This illustrates an important principle: frameworks are constructed through intellectual work on relevant knowledge, not retrieved intact from a source.
1. The Research Problem Gives the Framework Its Direction
Before deciding which theories or studies belong in a framework, begin with the problem the research is trying to understand. The problem does not by itself provide evidence for a relationship, but it determines what kinds of concepts and explanations are relevant enough to investigate.
Suppose you are studying why university instructors differ in their willingness to use generative AI for teaching. That problem immediately directs attention toward concepts that might help explain adoption: perceived usefulness, confidence, institutional support, concerns about risk, disciplinary norms, or other relevant factors. It does not establish that all of those concepts belong in the final framework. It tells you where to begin looking.
This is one reason a framework should not be assembled by collecting interesting variables from unrelated papers. The framework needs a center of gravity, and that center is the phenomenon or problem your study is designed to investigate.
2. Formal Theories Can Supply Concepts and Proposed Relationships
An established theory may provide concepts, mechanisms, propositions, or expected relationships that help explain the research problem. When a theory closely matches what you are investigating, it can provide substantial structure for the framework.
For example, a researcher examining technology adoption might encounter an established theory containing constructs relevant to how people evaluate and adopt technology. Rather than starting with an empty page, the researcher can consider whether those constructs and relationships meaningfully apply to the population, technology, and context being studied.
But theory is a possible source, not automatically the sole source. A conceptual framework may draw on one theory, combine compatible ideas from several theoretical perspectives, or be constructed without adopting a single formal theory as its organizing foundation. The question of whether a formal theory is necessary therefore requires a more nuanced answer than simply “yes” or “no.”
3. Previous Empirical Research Can Show Which Concepts and Relationships Matter
Published empirical studies are another important source. They show what researchers have already investigated, how concepts have been defined or operationalized, which relationships have received empirical support, where findings conflict, and which factors may have been overlooked.
This is not the same as copying the framework from a previous paper. A study conducted in another population or context may contain useful evidence without providing an appropriate framework for your own research.
Instead, you synthesize across studies. If several relevant studies repeatedly identify a particular construct, that recurrence may provide a reason to consider it. If studies report a relationship between two concepts, those findings may help justify examining that relationship. Contradictory findings can also be informative because uncertainty itself may provide a reason for further investigation.
A framework can therefore be substantially grounded in previous empirical research rather than a single formal theory, provided that the synthesis is intellectually coherent and appropriate to the research question.
4. Established Concepts Can Come From Different Bodies of Literature
Your research problem may sit at the intersection of several literatures rather than inside one established theoretical tradition.
Imagine a study of doctoral students' use of generative AI when writing dissertations. Relevant concepts might come from research on self-regulated learning, academic integrity, AI literacy, research self-efficacy, supervisory practices, and institutional policy. No single source necessarily contains the exact conceptual combination needed by the study.
This is especially relevant for interdisciplinary problems. Jabareen's conceptual framework analysis explicitly treats multidisciplinary bodies of knowledge as material from which concepts can be identified, categorized, synthesized, and integrated into a framework.
The resulting framework is not a random mixture of concepts. Each inclusion needs a rationale connected to the phenomenon being investigated.
5. Context Can Influence What Belongs in the Framework
A relationship observed in one setting may operate differently in another. Institutional policies, resources, cultural expectations, regulatory environments, disciplinary practices, socioeconomic conditions, or technological infrastructure can alter how a phenomenon unfolds.
Context therefore matters when determining which concepts deserve attention. A study of online learning participation in a well-resourced metropolitan university, for instance, may require a different set of contextual considerations from a study conducted in institutions where connectivity and device access remain substantial constraints.
Context should not become an excuse to add every demographic or environmental characteristic imaginable. The researcher still needs to determine which contextual or background factors belong in the conceptual framework and which are merely descriptive characteristics of the study.
6. Researcher Reasoning Connects the Sources
This part is easy to overlook because researchers are often told that everything in a framework must “come from the literature.” The statement is partly right but can be misunderstood.
The literature supplies evidence, concepts, theoretical propositions, definitions, and prior interpretations. It does not usually hand you the exact framework required for your study. You still have to decide what is relevant, what can reasonably be combined, what should be excluded, and how the pieces relate to the research question.
That synthesis involves researcher judgment.
Judgment, however, is not the same as unsupported opinion. The reasoning should be visible enough that another researcher can understand why the selected concepts and relationships belong together. Jabareen similarly treats conceptual framework construction as an iterative analytical process involving movement between concepts and evidence rather than mechanical extraction from texts.
Evidence supplies the intellectual basis
Theories, concepts, prior studies, and relevant contextual knowledge provide reasons for including particular elements or relationships.
Researcher synthesis creates the framework
The researcher determines how relevant pieces of knowledge can be organized into a coherent representation of the particular problem being studied.
The Sources Do Not All Have to Contribute Equally
Frameworks can differ substantially in where their intellectual weight lies.

A theory-driven study might derive much of its framework from an established theoretical model and use empirical literature mainly to establish its relevance. Another study may find no theory that adequately captures the problem and instead synthesize concepts and findings across several research traditions.
Neither approach is inherently stronger. What matters is whether the framework has a defensible relationship with the research problem and the knowledge on which it claims to build.
Every Element Should Have a Reason for Being There
Once you understand that frameworks can draw from multiple sources, another problem can appear: the temptation to include everything you encounter.
A concept should not enter the framework merely because it appeared in the literature review. Similarly, a relationship should not be represented merely because it seems plausible.
For each element, ask two different questions:

Relevance: Does this concept help represent or explain the phenomenon my study addresses?

Support: What theoretical reasoning, empirical evidence, conceptual argument, or contextual justification supports its inclusion?
This distinction becomes particularly important when deciding which concepts should actually appear in the framework. Your literature review will almost always discuss more ideas than your conceptual framework needs to represent.
The same scrutiny should be applied to relationships. Putting an arrow between two boxes makes a substantive claim about how those concepts are connected. The precise evidentiary expectations depend on what the arrow represents, but researchers should be able to explain the reasoning behind each relationship represented in the framework.
