Does a Conceptual Framework Have to Be a Diagram?

A conceptual framework is fundamentally an organized account of the concepts and relationships that orient a study, not simply a diagram. A visual representation can be valuable, but whether one is needed depends on the framework, research tradition, and reporting requirements.

01 · The Question

If There Is No Diagram, Is It Still a Conceptual Framework?

For many researchers, the phrase conceptual framework immediately brings to mind boxes and arrows. Variables sit inside rectangles. Lines connect them. Somewhere beneath the figure appears a caption announcing that this is the study's conceptual framework.

That familiar format can make it seem as though the diagram itself is the framework.

But what if your framework is easier to explain in prose? What if your study is qualitative and the concepts do not form a neat predictor-outcome model? What if the relationships are sufficiently complex that forcing them into boxes actually makes the argument less clear?

A diagram can represent a conceptual framework, but the conceptual framework is the underlying intellectual structure, not merely its visual form.

No, a Conceptual Framework Is Not Defined by Having Boxes and Arrows

In Brief

No. A conceptual framework does not inherently have to be a diagram; it can be articulated through a coherent narrative that identifies and explains the concepts, assumptions, relationships, and boundaries that orient the study.

A diagram is often useful because it makes structure visible quickly, but it should complement rather than substitute for conceptual explanation. Requirements vary across disciplines, institutions, supervisors, and journals, so a diagram may still be expected in a particular research context.

03 · What You Need to Know

The Framework Is the Conceptual Argument; the Diagram Is One Way to Represent It

Conceptual Frameworks Are Broader Than Visual Models

Methodological literature does not define conceptual frameworks simply as diagrams. Jabareen describes a conceptual framework as a network of interlinked concepts that together provide an understanding of a phenomenon. Ravitch and Riggan similarly treat a conceptual framework as an argument about the importance of a research problem and the appropriateness of the researcher's approach to studying it.

These formulations emphasize conceptual organization and reasoning. A visual model can communicate some of that organization, but the framework exists at the level of the intellectual argument.

This distinction also explains why a framework is constructed from scholarly and conceptual sources rather than produced simply by drawing a figure.

A Diagram and a Conceptual Framework Are Not Synonyms

Conceptual framework The organized conceptual structure through which the researcher understands, bounds, and approaches the research problem.
Conceptual framework diagram A visual representation of some or all of that conceptual structure.

This difference matters because a polished diagram can exist without a well-developed framework. Boxes may have labels, arrows may connect them, and the entire figure may still lack a defensible explanation of why those concepts were selected and why the relationships make sense.

The opposite is also possible. A researcher may articulate a coherent conceptual framework in prose without translating it into a conventional diagram.

What a Diagram Does Particularly Well

Visual representations are useful when the spatial arrangement of concepts helps readers understand the framework more quickly.

A diagram can make focal concepts visible, distinguish predictors from outcomes, show pathways, identify contextual levels, represent mediation or moderation, and reveal the overall architecture of a model at a glance.

For a framework proposing several specific relationships among constructs, a figure can therefore reduce the cognitive burden of repeatedly reconstructing those relationships from prose.

The benefit is communicative rather than ceremonial. You do not need a diagram merely so the thesis contains something labeled “Figure 1.”

What a Narrative Does Better

Diagrams are good at compression. Compression is also their limitation.

An arrow cannot easily explain why a relationship is expected, how strong the evidence is, what assumptions underlie it, where contradictory findings exist, or what qualifications apply.

Likewise, a box containing “institutional context” cannot explain which institutional conditions matter or why.

The narrative surrounding the framework can provide definitions, theoretical reasoning, empirical support, boundary conditions, uncertainties, and distinctions that would make a diagram unreadable if placed inside it.

This is why the prose should explain what the relationships represented visually actually mean. A diagram summarizes reasoning; it does not replace it.

Some Frameworks Are Easier to Represent Visually Than Others

A quantitative study with a small number of hypothesized relationships often lends itself naturally to a diagram.

For example:

AI self-efficacy → adoption intention

Perceived usefulness → adoption intention

Institutional support → adoption intention

A visual model can communicate those relationships efficiently.

Other frameworks may involve concepts whose relationships are recursive, interpretive, developmental, multilevel, or deliberately provisional. A conventional box-and-arrow model can sometimes imply a degree of linearity or certainty that the researcher's conceptual argument does not actually contain.

In such cases, narrative explanation may carry more of the framework's meaning, with a diagram used only if it genuinely helps.

Qualitative Conceptual Frameworks Do Not Need to Pretend to Be Variable Models

Qualitative researchers may use conceptual frameworks to identify sensitizing concepts, orient attention, establish interpretive perspectives, or identify processes that warrant exploration.

Those concepts do not necessarily function as independent and dependent variables.

Forcing them into a left-to-right causal diagram can distort the methodology by making an exploratory or interpretive framework resemble a hypothesis-testing model.

A qualitative framework can still be represented visually, but the visual vocabulary should match its purpose. Concepts might be organized around a phenomenon, arranged across levels, represented as interacting processes, or explained primarily through prose.

A Diagram Cannot Rescue an Underdeveloped Framework

Researchers sometimes begin by drawing boxes and then search for literature to justify them afterward.

This reverses the intellectual sequence.

The framework should emerge from engagement with the research problem, relevant theory or conceptual literature, empirical research, and researcher synthesis. The figure comes later as a representation of that reasoning.

If you cannot explain why a concept belongs in the framework without pointing at the box containing its name, the problem is conceptual rather than graphical.

A Diagram Can Reveal Problems You Did Not Notice in Prose

Although diagrams are not mandatory in principle, trying to draw the framework can be analytically useful.

Once concepts are placed on a page, ambiguities become visible. You may discover that two constructs overlap, that the direction of a relationship is unclear, that a contextual factor has no obvious role, or that several relationships cannot be connected coherently.

Diagramming can therefore function as a thinking tool even if the resulting figure never appears in the final manuscript.

Researchers occasionally discover, after drawing the framework, that what looked perfectly sensible across six pages of prose has developed a rather alarming number of arrows. That is useful information.

The Diagram Should Not Contain Everything the Narrative Contains

Trying to make the figure completely self-sufficient can produce excessive visual complexity.

A diagram usually needs the concepts, relationships, boundaries, and distinctions necessary to understand the framework's structure. Definitions, extensive citations, qualifications, methodological details, and lengthy explanations generally belong in the surrounding text.

If the diagram becomes difficult to interpret because every nuance has been encoded visually, reconsider whether the framework has become too complicated or merely too complicated to display in one figure.

Institutional and Publication Requirements Still Matter

Even though a diagram is not conceptually required in every framework, your local requirements may say otherwise.

A university dissertation manual may prescribe a graphical conceptual framework. A supervisor or committee may expect one. A journal may have conventions that make a visual model useful or customary.

Those are reporting requirements rather than universal definitions of what makes something a conceptual framework.

Check the applicable requirements before deciding that the absence of a methodological necessity means you can omit the figure from a thesis that explicitly requires one.

If You Use a Diagram, Explain It

A conceptual framework figure should not simply appear between paragraphs without interpretation.

Explain what the major concepts represent, what the connections mean, which relationships are focal to the study, and any visual conventions readers need to understand.

If solid and dotted lines mean different things, define them. If an arrow represents a hypothesized directional relationship rather than causality, say so. If contextual factors surround the focal model but are not directly examined, make that distinction explicit.

The goal is for the narrative and visual representation to reinforce each other.

The Same Framework in Narrative and Visual Form

Hypothetical Example

Faculty adoption of generative AI

Suppose a researcher proposes that faculty members' AI self-efficacy, perceived usefulness of generative AI, and institutional support are associated with their intention to use generative AI for teaching.

Narrative framework The researcher defines each concept, synthesizes the literature supporting its relevance, explains why each is expected to relate to adoption intention, and specifies the boundaries of the proposed relationships.
Visual representation A diagram places AI self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, and institutional support on one side, with directional connections toward adoption intention.
What the figure adds The reader can see immediately that three focal explanatory concepts converge on the same outcome.
What the narrative adds The prose explains what the constructs mean, why the relationships are proposed, what evidence supports them, and whether the arrows represent prediction, influence, or another relationship.
Combined result The diagram provides structural compression while the narrative supplies the conceptual reasoning that the graphic cannot contain efficiently.

The framework does not become more conceptually legitimate because it has been drawn. The diagram simply provides another way for the reader to understand its structure.

Common Misunderstandings About Conceptual Framework Diagrams

Misconception

No Diagram Means No Conceptual Framework

A framework can be articulated through a coherent conceptual argument without a conventional figure. Whether a diagram is required depends partly on disciplinary and institutional expectations.

The Diagram Is the Entire Conceptual Framework

The figure represents the framework's structure but normally cannot communicate all of its definitions, evidence, assumptions, qualifications, and reasoning. Those need explanation in the accompanying text.

Every Conceptual Framework Should Use Boxes and Arrows

Boxes and arrows work well for some relationship structures but can misrepresent others. The visual form should reflect the conceptual logic rather than force every research problem into a predictor-outcome template.

Visual complexity can disguise conceptual weakness. A useful diagram makes the underlying reasoning easier to understand rather than demonstrating how many shapes can fit on a page.

Use a Diagram When Seeing the Structure Helps the Reader

Do not begin with the assumption that you need boxes and arrows. Begin with the conceptual argument, then ask whether a visual representation improves communication.

A simple decision framework

If your framework contains several explicit relationships among clearly defined concepts
A diagram will often help readers understand the structure quickly.
If the framework is primarily interpretive, exploratory, or difficult to reduce to directional relationships
Let the narrative carry the conceptual argument and use a visual representation only if it adds clarity.
If the diagram forces you to imply relationships you do not actually claim
Redesign the visual vocabulary or rely more heavily on narrative explanation.
If the conceptual model is clear but difficult to remember from prose
A complementary figure may provide useful structural orientation.
If your institution, supervisor, or target publication explicitly requires a diagram
Provide one while ensuring that it accurately represents the framework rather than merely satisfying the format requirement.

If you do create a figure, treat it as the visual expression of the reasoning developed while building the conceptual framework, not as the framework's starting point.

Can I explain the conceptual framework coherently in prose before trying to draw it?
Would a visual representation make the major concepts or relationships easier to understand?
Does the proposed visual form accurately match the kind of relationships my framework contains?
Have I avoided implying causality or direction merely because arrows are visually convenient?
If I use a diagram, have I explained its important symbols and relationships in the text?
Am I trying to put details into the figure that would be clearer in the narrative?
Have I checked the requirements of my institution, supervisor, discipline, or target journal?

Is a conceptual framework always a diagram?

No. A conceptual framework is the organized conceptual structure that informs the study. A diagram is one possible representation of that structure.

Can I write a conceptual framework entirely in paragraph form?

Potentially, yes. A coherent narrative can articulate the concepts, relationships, assumptions, and boundaries of the framework. Check whether your institution, discipline, supervisor, or target publication separately requires a graphical representation.

Do qualitative studies need conceptual framework diagrams?

Not inherently. Qualitative frameworks may be expressed narratively or visually depending on their purpose. Avoid forcing sensitizing concepts or interpretive relationships into a conventional variable model when that representation does not fit the methodology.

Should I put citations inside my conceptual framework diagram?

Not necessarily. The surrounding text can provide the scholarly basis for the concepts and relationships. If a figure is adapted or reproduced from another source, however, appropriate attribution and any applicable copyright or licensing requirements should be addressed.

Can a conceptual framework use something other than boxes and arrows?

Yes. The visual representation can use other structures when they more accurately communicate the conceptual logic. Whatever notation you choose should remain clear, accessible, and explicitly explained when its meaning is not obvious.

Should the diagram contain every concept discussed in the framework narrative?

No. The visual representation can focus on the concepts and relationships necessary to communicate the framework's structure. Supporting definitions, contextual details, assumptions, and qualifications can remain in the narrative.

Can I develop the diagram before writing the framework?

You can sketch provisional diagrams while thinking through the framework, and doing so may reveal conceptual problems. The final figure should nevertheless emerge from and remain defensible through the literature, research problem, and conceptual reasoning rather than becoming a diagram for which support is sought afterward.

Use a visual representation when it improves understanding, and explain it with accompanying prose. If your research context requires a diagram, provide one, but do not mistake graphical form for conceptual substance.
