More Than One Framework Is Possible, but Coherence Still Matters
Several Theories Do Not Automatically Mean Several Conceptual Frameworks
This is the first distinction to make.
A researcher may draw on two or three theories while constructing one conceptual framework. Different theories can contribute complementary concepts or explanations to the same study-specific structure.
Similarly, a framework may synthesize theory, conceptual literature, and empirical findings from several traditions without becoming several frameworks.
The number of intellectual sources informing a conceptual framework is therefore not the same as the number of frameworks used in the study.
Multiple sources within one framework
Several theories, concepts, or empirical literatures are integrated into one coherent conceptual structure addressing the study.
Multiple conceptual frameworks
Distinct conceptual structures perform different roles for separate questions, phases, levels, or components of the research.
One Framework Is Usually Preferable When the Study Has One Coherent Conceptual Problem
If all research questions address the same phenomenon at roughly the same conceptual level, a single integrated framework is often easier to justify and communicate.
Suppose a study examines how AI self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, institutional support, and perceived risk relate to faculty adoption of generative AI. The concepts may come from different theoretical or empirical traditions, but that does not require four separate frameworks.
If they can be integrated coherently around the same research problem, one study-specific framework may provide a clearer account.
This is especially relevant when researchers assume that each framework must correspond to one formal theory. It does not.
Separate Research Questions Can Sometimes Require Distinct Frameworks
Multiple frameworks become more defensible when parts of the study ask substantively different questions that cannot be represented adequately within one conceptual structure.
For example, one component might examine individual instructors' adoption decisions, while another investigates how university governance structures develop AI policy. The first may focus on individual beliefs and behavior; the second may focus on organizational decision-making and institutional processes.
If combining both into one framework produces a sprawling model with little conceptual integration, separate frameworks may be clearer.
The researcher should still explain how the two components contribute to the overarching research problem.
Different Levels of Analysis May Justify Different Frameworks
A study may operate at individual, classroom, organizational, or system levels.
Consider research examining students' responsible AI use alongside university-level AI governance. One framework might organize individual-level concepts such as AI literacy and academic integrity beliefs. Another might organize institutional concepts such as governance structures, policy development, faculty support, and accountability.
These frameworks address related phenomena but at different levels.
An alternative is a single multilevel framework. Which option is clearer depends on how strongly the levels are conceptually connected and whether cross-level relationships form part of the study.
There is no virtue in integration merely for the sake of having one diagram. Nor is there virtue in separation merely because two levels exist.
Mixed-Methods Research Does Not Automatically Require Two Frameworks
A mixed-methods study combines quantitative and qualitative approaches, but methodological plurality does not automatically imply conceptual plurality.
Both components may address the same conceptual framework in different ways. Quantitative data might examine specified relationships, while qualitative data explore how participants understand or experience those relationships.
Alternatively, distinct phases may genuinely require different conceptual structures. An exploratory qualitative phase might identify processes that inform a subsequent quantitative model, for example.
The decision should therefore follow the conceptual purpose of each component rather than a formula such as “one framework per method.”
Sequential Studies May Allow the Framework to Develop Between Phases
In longitudinal, design-based, exploratory sequential, or other multiphase research, later stages may build on findings from earlier ones.
The initial phase might begin with a provisional conceptual framework. Evidence generated during that phase could then inform a revised or more specific framework for the next phase.
This situation is subtly different from having two unrelated frameworks simultaneously. The second may represent an evolution of the first.
Whether to present these as Framework 1 and Framework 2, an initial and revised framework, or one developing framework depends on the methodology and purpose. The crucial point is transparency about how and why the conceptual framework changed during the research.
Multiple Frameworks Need an Explicit Relationship
If two frameworks appear in the same study, readers should not have to infer why both are there.
Explain whether they:
- address different research questions;
- operate at different levels of analysis;
- guide different phases of the research;
- provide complementary perspectives on the same phenomenon; or
- represent an initial and subsequently revised conceptualization.
The relationship should be substantive, not merely organizational.
A dissertation with “Conceptual Framework A” in one chapter and “Conceptual Framework B” later, with no explanation of how they relate, risks appearing as two studies sharing a binding.
Do Not Use Separate Frameworks to Avoid Conceptual Integration
Sometimes researchers encounter theories that do not fit together comfortably and solve the problem by assigning each its own diagram.
That does not necessarily resolve the incompatibility.
If both frameworks are being used to explain the same phenomenon, ask whether their assumptions, concepts, and propositions are compatible, complementary, competing, or genuinely independent.
Separate figures can clarify conceptual differences, but they should not conceal contradictions that need discussion.
Watch Out
Multiple frameworks should not become a filing system for theories that the researcher has not integrated. If several frameworks make competing claims about the same phenomenon, explain the tension rather than placing them in separate figures and hoping nobody asks them to meet.
One Framework With Multiple Components May Be the Better Solution
Before creating separate frameworks, consider whether one overarching framework can contain distinct components.
You might separate individual and institutional levels visually, distinguish phases within the same figure, or group related concepts into coherent domains.
This approach can preserve the relationships among components while avoiding duplication.
However, integration should not produce a figure so dense that readers can no longer identify the separate conceptual arguments. At that point, the issue becomes one of whether the combined framework has become unnecessarily complex.
Separate Diagrams Do Not Necessarily Mean Separate Frameworks
A single complex conceptual framework can sometimes be presented through more than one figure.
For example, one overview figure might show the complete architecture while additional figures enlarge specific sections or pathways.
Those are multiple representations of one framework, not necessarily multiple conceptual frameworks.
This distinction matters because graphical organization should not be mistaken for conceptual organization. Just as a framework is not synonymous with its diagram, two diagrams do not automatically indicate two frameworks.
Each Framework Increases the Burden of Alignment
Every framework needs to connect appropriately to the research questions, literature, methodology, analysis, and interpretation it informs.
With two frameworks, you need to explain not only each framework individually but also their relationship.
Ask which research question each addresses, which data correspond to it, how findings from the two frameworks will be brought together, and whether their conclusions operate at compatible levels.
If those questions have no clear answers, multiple frameworks may be adding organizational complexity without conceptual benefit.
