What If Another Field Has Already Answered Your Research Question?
You search the literature in your discipline and find surprisingly little. The gap seems clear. Researchers in your field have barely examined the problem.
But research questions do not respect departmental boundaries.
A problem framed as educational technology might overlap with human-computer interaction. A question in management might already have a substantial organizational psychology literature. Researchers in communication, information systems, public health, sociology, computer science, or another field may investigate similar phenomena using their own theories, terminology, methods, and publication venues.
This raises a consequential question: if another discipline already provides relevant evidence, do you still have a research gap?

Why Disciplinary Boundaries Can Create Apparent Research Gaps
Academic disciplines organize scholarship, but phenomena often cross them
Disciplines are useful intellectual structures. They develop specialized theories, methods, terminology, journals, professional communities, and standards of evidence. Those structures help researchers build cumulative knowledge.
They can also divide literatures that address overlapping problems.
Consider a researcher interested in why people accept incorrect recommendations from artificial intelligence. Depending on the framing, relevant research might appear under automation bias, algorithm aversion, decision support, human-AI interaction, trust in automation, cognitive reliance, or related concepts. Those literatures may be distributed across psychology, computer science, human factors, information systems, medicine, communication, and other areas.
If the researcher searches only journals and databases familiar to one discipline, part of the intellectual landscape may remain invisible.
"Not studied in my field" is different from "not studied"
Disciplinary gap
A question has received insufficient attention within a particular disciplinary tradition.
Broader evidence gap
Available research across relevant fields does not adequately answer the question.
These are not equivalent claims.
A disciplinary gap can still matter. Perhaps a field has not incorporated a theory that could change how it understands an important problem. Perhaps researchers elsewhere have produced useful evidence, but its implications have not been examined in the disciplinary context you care about.
Yet "researchers in our field rarely discuss this" is not sufficient grounds for saying "little is known about this." The second claim requires a broader view of the evidence.
Different disciplines may study the same phenomenon using different terminology
Cross-disciplinary searching is difficult partly because vocabulary changes at disciplinary boundaries. A term central to one field may be uncommon in another, even when researchers are examining similar phenomena.
Recent work on cross-disciplinary literature searching identifies differences in specialized language, research approaches, and disciplinary emphases as challenges to retrieving relevant evidence across fields. A search built entirely from one discipline's vocabulary may therefore have low sensitivity outside that field.
This makes terminological variation particularly important when evaluating an apparent gap . Finding another discipline often requires learning how that discipline names the problem.
Databases reinforce disciplinary visibility
Database selection also shapes what appears to exist. Some bibliographic databases are broad and multidisciplinary, while others emphasize particular subject areas. Specialized databases can provide important coverage of literature that may not be retrieved as effectively through sources associated with another field.
PRISMA-S, a reporting guideline for literature searches in systematic reviews, explicitly recognizes broad disciplinary, specialized, and regional databases as different categories of information sources. Search platforms themselves can also differ in field codes, phrase searching, truncation, and other retrieval functions.
The implication for gap identification is straightforward: if your research problem plausibly crosses disciplines, your search strategy should not be confined automatically to the database you habitually use.
Finding related research elsewhere does not automatically fill the gap
Cross-disciplinary relevance should not be determined by superficial similarity. The fact that another field studies something with a similar name does not establish that its evidence answers your question.
Compare the external literature with your proposed problem along dimensions that actually matter.

Studying the same phenomenon with a different outcome may not answer your question.
Theoretical framing
Does another field conceptualize the problem differently?
The difference may reveal either existing knowledge or a legitimate opportunity for theoretical integration.
Method and evidence
How directly and convincingly does the evidence address the claim?
A large adjacent literature can coexist with an important evidential limitation.
Contextual differences need an argument, not an assumption
Researchers sometimes preserve a gap by narrowing the setting once broader evidence appears: "Yes, this has been studied elsewhere, but not in my country, city, institution, profession, or type of university."
Sometimes that restriction is justified. Context can matter enormously. But geographic or institutional specificity is not self-validating. You need a reason to expect the context to change the phenomenon, relationship, mechanism, implementation, or practical decision.
If studies from another discipline also come from different settings, ask whether evidence from comparable contexts changes the apparent geographic gap .
Another discipline can do more than destroy your gap
Discovering a mature literature elsewhere may initially feel inconvenient because it complicates a simple novelty claim. Intellectually, however, it can improve the study.
Another discipline may provide a theory you had not considered, validated instruments, competing explanations, established methodological approaches, boundary conditions, or findings that conflict with assumptions in your own field.
The contribution may then shift from "nobody has studied this" to a more interesting question: what happens when two previously separated bodies of knowledge are brought into conversation?
That is not a consolation prize. In some cases, it is a stronger scholarly contribution than rediscovering a phenomenon because disciplinary boundaries prevented you from seeing that someone else had already named it.
Cross-disciplinary evidence may narrow rather than eliminate the gap
Imagine that psychology has established a robust relationship between two constructs, while education has barely examined it. It would be difficult to claim that the relationship itself is unknown. But meaningful questions might remain about whether the mechanism operates similarly in educational settings, whether educational conditions moderate it, or whether established measures capture the construct appropriately in that context.
The revised gap is narrower but more defensible.
This is why the objective should be to test the gap before building an entire study around it , including against evidence located outside the disciplinary boundaries where the idea originated.
06 · What This Means for You
Test Your Gap Beyond the Borders of Your Own Field
If your topic plausibly overlaps another discipline, ask what researchers in that field would call the phenomenon, where they would publish it, and which theories they would use to explain it.
A simple decision framework
If another discipline studies essentially the same question in comparable conditions
Treat the broad gap as weakened or potentially filled and reassess what remains genuinely unknown.
If another discipline studies the same phenomenon but asks different questions
Use that literature as relevant background while identifying precisely what its evidence does not resolve.
If external studies use substantially different populations or contexts
Determine whether those differences provide a theoretically or practically credible reason to expect different findings.
If another field offers a mature theoretical explanation
Engage with that theory rather than presenting the phenomenon as conceptually unexplored.
If relevant fields use unfamiliar terminology
Learn their vocabulary and revise the search before drawing conclusions from sparse results.
If no relevant external evidence emerges after a defensible search
The broader gap claim becomes more credible, subject to the other limitations of your literature search.
A strong literature review is therefore not merely a review of what your discipline says about the problem. When the question itself crosses intellectual boundaries, the search should be capable of crossing them too.

Before Claiming a Gap Within Your Discipline
Before concluding that the problem is understudied, check:
Which other disciplines could plausibly study the same phenomenon or underlying mechanism?
What terminology would researchers in those disciplines use for the concepts in my question?
Have I searched appropriate multidisciplinary and subject-specific databases rather than relying only on sources familiar to my field?
Have I followed references and citations from papers that connect my topic with neighboring fields?
Does external research actually examine the same phenomenon, population, outcome, relationship, or mechanism?
If the external evidence comes from another context, do I have a substantive reason to expect my context to produce different knowledge?
Does another field already provide theories or measures that my proposed study should engage with?
After considering the external literature, can I state precisely what remains unanswered without relying merely on disciplinary boundaries?
