Can You Modify or Extend an Existing Theory for Your Study?

You can modify or extend an existing theory, but changing a theory requires more than adding a convenient variable to its diagram. A defensible extension identifies a genuine explanatory limitation and shows how the proposed change improves theoretical understanding.

01 · The Question

Are You Allowed to Change an Established Theory?

You find a theory that explains most of your research problem remarkably well. There is just one difficulty: something important appears to be missing.

Perhaps the theory does not account for a contextual condition that seems central to your setting. A relationship may operate differently for particular groups. Two constructs that the original theory treats together may need to be distinguished. Or existing studies may consistently show a relationship without explaining the mechanism that produces it.

Can you modify the theory?

Potentially, yes. Theories are not museum pieces that researchers may observe but never touch. Theoretical development often occurs because scholars identify limitations in existing explanations and propose more precise constructs, relationships, mechanisms, sequences, or boundary conditions.

But changing a theory is also a theoretical claim. Adding something to a diagram is easy. Demonstrating why the theory needs that change, what the change means, and whether evidence supports it is considerably harder.

Yes, but the Modification Needs a Theoretical Reason

In Brief

Yes. Researchers can modify, elaborate, or extend an existing theory when there is a defensible reason to believe that its constructs, relationships, mechanisms, sequence, or boundary conditions require refinement to explain the phenomenon more adequately.

The change should address an identifiable theoretical limitation rather than simply improve statistical fit or accommodate variables available in your dataset. Clearly distinguish the original theory from your proposed modification and match the strength of your theoretical claim to the evidence your study actually provides.

03 · What You Need to Know

Theory Extension Is About Improving Explanation

Theories are expected to develop

An established theory represents a scholarly explanation at a particular stage of development. Subsequent research may identify contexts in which its propositions behave differently, constructs that need greater precision, mechanisms that were underspecified, or empirical observations that the original explanation cannot adequately accommodate.

That is not necessarily evidence that the theory has failed completely. It may indicate that the explanation can be refined.

Fisher and Aguinis describe theory elaboration as an approach that begins with existing conceptual ideas or a preliminary model and develops new theoretical insights by contrasting, specifying, or restructuring constructs and relationships to account for empirical observations. Their framework illustrates an important point: theoretical advancement can occur between simply testing an unchanged theory and attempting to invent an entirely new one.

Applying a theory is different from extending it

Researchers sometimes describe a study as a theoretical extension merely because an established theory is being used with a new population, technology, country, or institution.

That is not automatically an extension.

If you apply the original constructs and relationships without changing the explanation, you are primarily applying or testing the theory in another setting. Such research can still be valuable, especially when the new context provides a meaningful test of generalizability or boundary conditions.

An extension makes a stronger contribution. Something about the theoretical explanation itself is being added, refined, distinguished, restructured, or bounded.

Theory application Uses an existing theoretical explanation to understand or investigate a phenomenon without substantively changing that explanation.
Theory extension or elaboration Develops the existing explanation by refining its constructs, relationships, mechanisms, sequence, scope, or boundary conditions.

Being precise about whether you test, apply, extend, or build theory prevents a modest contextual application from being presented as a larger theoretical contribution than it is.

Adding a new construct can extend a theory, but not automatically

Suppose an established theory proposes that A influences B. You believe C also matters, so you add C to your research model.

Have you extended the theory?

Perhaps, but the answer depends on what C contributes theoretically.

If C explains why A influences B, specifies when the relationship occurs, changes the meaning of an existing construct, or accounts for observations the theory could not previously explain, then the addition may contribute to theoretical elaboration.

If C is included only because previous empirical studies found that it predicts B, you may simply have expanded an empirical model.

The difference lies in explanatory reasoning. A variable becomes theoretically consequential when its inclusion changes what the theory allows us to understand.

You can refine the meaning of a construct

Theoretical development does not always require adding something.

A construct may be too broad, ambiguously defined, or treated as one dimension when empirical observations suggest meaningful distinctions. Fisher and Aguinis identify construct specification and construct splitting among the ways researchers can elaborate theory.

Imagine that an existing theory treats “institutional support” as a single construct. Further investigation might suggest that technical support and policy support operate through different mechanisms. Distinguishing them could improve the explanatory precision of the theory if the distinction is conceptually defensible and empirically meaningful.

Splitting constructs merely because a factor analysis produces several dimensions, however, is not enough by itself. The theoretical meaning of those distinctions still needs explanation.

You can specify a mechanism

Sometimes a theory predicts that two constructs are related but provides only a limited explanation of how that relationship occurs.

A researcher might propose an intervening mechanism that explains the process connecting them. In empirical models this is often represented through mediation, although statistical mediation and theoretical mechanism are not synonymous.

The theoretical contribution comes from explaining the process.

For example, suppose a theory predicts that institutional support increases instructors' technology use. A researcher might propose that support influences use partly because it increases perceived capability. The important theoretical question is why institutional support should alter perceived capability and why that change should affect behavior.

Simply inserting a mediator into a structural model does not answer those questions.

You can identify boundary conditions

A theory may explain a relationship well under some circumstances but poorly under others.

Identifying those circumstances can refine its scope.

A boundary condition specifies when, where, for whom, or under what circumstances a theoretical proposition is expected to hold. Empirically, such conditions are often investigated through moderators, subgroup differences, contexts, or temporal conditions, although boundary conditions are fundamentally theoretical rather than merely statistical.

For instance, a relationship between perceived usefulness and technology adoption might differ when technology use is mandatory rather than voluntary. If the original theory implicitly assumes volitional choice, studying mandatory use could expose an important boundary.

This is more theoretically informative than saying simply that “context matters.”

You can restructure relationships among existing constructs

Theory elaboration can also involve changing how existing constructs are connected.

A relationship assumed to be direct may operate through another process. A supposedly linear relationship may be nonlinear. Two constructs thought to operate independently may interact. Relationships may be reciprocal rather than unidirectional.

Fisher and Aguinis explicitly identify the structuring of specific, sequential, and recursive relationships as routes to theoretical elaboration.

These changes are consequential because they alter the explanatory architecture of the theory rather than merely expanding its list of variables.

You can clarify temporal sequence

Many theories imply processes that unfold over time even when empirical studies test them using cross-sectional data.

Research may reveal that the sequence of constructs matters. A causes B only after C occurs, or a relationship that appears reciprocal may actually unfold through alternating stages.

Clarifying temporal ordering can therefore constitute theoretical refinement.

It also creates methodological obligations. A proposed temporal process cannot be strongly evaluated using a design incapable of observing temporal change. Theory and method need to develop together.

Context can justify modification, but novelty of context is not enough

Researchers frequently propose adding a variable because their study occurs in a “unique context.”

Sometimes that is defensible. Context may expose assumptions that were invisible in the setting where the theory was developed. Cultural norms, regulatory structures, institutional arrangements, technological affordances, or resource constraints may alter how a theoretical mechanism operates.

But a new country, university, profession, or technology does not automatically require theoretical modification.

You need to explain why the contextual difference should alter a construct, relationship, mechanism, or boundary. Otherwise, the study may simply be an application of the existing theory in another setting.

Modification should begin with a limitation, not with available variables

A common workflow runs backward: researchers inspect their dataset, notice several variables that predict the outcome, and then add those variables to an established theory.

The resulting model may predict well, but prediction alone does not establish theoretical extension.

A stronger process begins by identifying an explanatory limitation. What does the theory currently fail to explain? Why might that limitation exist? What theoretical change would address it? What evidence would allow that proposed change to be evaluated?

Existing explanation Establish what the original theory actually claims.
Explanatory limitation Identify an unresolved observation, mechanism, boundary, construct, or relationship.
Proposed elaboration Explain how a modification addresses that limitation.
Empirical implication Specify what evidence should be observed if the proposed elaboration is useful.

Do not silently rewrite the original theory

If you modify a theory, readers should be able to distinguish the established theory from your contribution.

State which constructs and propositions come from the original formulation, which come from later theoretical development, and which modifications you are proposing.

This is particularly important when theories have already undergone multiple revisions. What researchers casually call “the original theory” may actually refer to a later version containing constructs or relationships absent from the foundational publication.

Watch Out

Do not redraw an established theory with your own constructs added and then present the resulting diagram under the original theory's name without qualification. Readers should be able to tell where the established theory ends and your proposed extension begins.

A modified theory requires evidence proportional to the claim

One study can provide evidence consistent with a proposed extension. That is not the same as permanently revising an established theory.

Theoretical claims generally become more credible through repeated investigation, conceptual scrutiny, comparison with alternatives, and evidence across relevant conditions.

A thesis or article might therefore state that findings “suggest a possible boundary condition,” “support the proposed extension,” or “indicate that the theoretical model may benefit from distinguishing these constructs.” Such language is often more defensible than announcing that the theory has now been definitively modified.

Theory is cumulative scholarship. A diagram does not become canonical merely because it survived one structural equation model.

04 · A Practical Example

What a Defensible Theory Extension Might Look Like

Hypothetical Example

When intention does not become actual AI use

An established behavioral theory proposes that favorable beliefs contribute to intention, which subsequently contributes to behavior. A researcher studying faculty use of generative AI finds that instructors with similarly strong intentions behave very differently depending on whether their institutions permit, support, or restrict particular uses.

Identify the limitation The existing explanation accounts for intention well but appears less adequate for explaining why intention translates into behavior under substantially different institutional conditions.
Develop the theoretical argument The researcher proposes that institutional conditions affect the opportunity to enact an intention rather than merely adding “institutional support” because it predicts AI use.
Specify the extension Institutional conditions are proposed as a boundary condition affecting the relationship between intention and behavior.
Test the implication The study is designed to examine whether the intention-behavior relationship differs systematically under the specified conditions.
Interpret proportionately Evidence consistent with the prediction supports further consideration of the proposed boundary condition; it does not establish that the entire original theory has been rewritten.

The important contribution is not the extra box. It is the proposed explanation of when and why an established relationship may change.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Modifying an Existing Theory

Misconception

You can add any significant predictor to extend a theory

Statistical prediction does not automatically create theoretical contribution. The additional construct should address an explanatory limitation and have a conceptually justified relationship with the existing theory.

Misconception

Using a theory in a new country automatically extends it

A new context may test generalizability or expose boundary conditions, but contextual novelty alone does not change a theory. Explain why features of the context should alter the theoretical explanation.

Misconception

Better model fit means the modified theory is better

Improved statistical fit can result from added complexity and does not by itself demonstrate improved theoretical explanation. The modification should make conceptual sense and ideally generate implications that distinguish it from the original account.

Misconception

You must preserve every part of the original theory

Theoretical elaboration can involve distinguishing constructs, restructuring relationships, or specifying boundaries. The original theory should be represented accurately, but theoretical advancement does not require treating every component as untouchable.

Misconception

Adding another theory is the same as extending the first theory

Not necessarily. You may be using multiple theories, integrating theories, or constructing a broader conceptual framework. Claiming that Theory A has been extended requires explaining how the explanatory content of Theory A itself has been developed.

Misconception

One supportive study establishes the revised theory

A study can provide evidence for a proposed modification, but theoretical acceptance usually develops cumulatively. Alternative explanations, measurement issues, different contexts, and replication all matter.

06 · What This Means for You

Modify the Theory Only After You Can Explain What Needs Fixing

A simple decision framework

If the existing theory adequately explains your research problem
Apply or test it without manufacturing an extension simply to claim theoretical novelty.
If an important construct is missing
Explain why its absence limits the theory and how adding it changes the explanation rather than merely prediction.
If a relationship operates differently under identifiable conditions
Consider whether those conditions constitute theoretically meaningful boundaries.
If an existing relationship lacks a convincing explanation
Consider specifying the mechanism or process connecting the constructs.
If the existing theory fits very little of the phenomenon
Reconsider whether extension is sensible or whether another theoretical strategy is needed because the theory does not actually fit.

Before calling your change an extension, write two short descriptions. First describe the theory exactly as it exists in the literature. Then describe your proposed version. The difference between those descriptions is the theoretical change you need to justify.

If you cannot articulate that difference without referring to statistical coefficients or model-fit indices, the theoretical argument probably needs further development.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Modifying or Extending a Theory

Check the proposed modification:
Read the foundational and major subsequent formulations of the theory so you know what the theory currently includes.
Identify a specific explanatory limitation rather than assuming every new context requires modification.
Explain why the proposed construct, relationship, mechanism, sequence, or boundary addresses that limitation.
Distinguish theoretical reasoning from the fact that an additional variable happens to predict the outcome.
Check whether the proposed modification already appears in later versions or extensions of the theory.
Make the original theory and your proposed changes visually and textually distinguishable.
Use a research design capable of evaluating the theoretical change you propose.
Consider plausible alternative explanations for any apparent improvement produced by the extension.
Phrase the theoretical contribution proportionately to the evidence rather than claiming definitive revision from one study.
08 · Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Extending Existing Theory

Am I allowed to add a variable to an existing theory?

Yes, but adding a variable to an empirical model is not automatically a theoretical extension. Explain what theoretical limitation the construct addresses, how it relates to existing constructs or mechanisms, and what new explanatory insight follows from including it.

Do I need permission from the original author to modify a theory?

Scholarly theories are routinely criticized, tested, elaborated, and extended through research. You do not ordinarily need an author's permission to propose a theoretical modification, although you must cite the original work accurately, respect copyright when reproducing protected figures or text, and distinguish your modification from the original formulation.

Does adding a moderator count as theory extension?

It can if the moderator identifies a theoretically meaningful boundary condition and you explain why it changes the focal relationship. Adding an interaction term solely because it is statistically significant is not enough.

Does adding a mediator count as theory extension?

Potentially. A mediator can contribute theoretically when it specifies a previously unclear mechanism explaining how or why constructs are related. Statistical mediation alone does not establish that mechanism.

Can I remove a construct from an established theory?

You can use only the theoretically relevant portion of a theory when justified, but omitting constructs from a study is not necessarily equivalent to modifying the theory itself. Be explicit about whether you are testing a partial model, adapting the framework, or arguing that the theory should be revised.

Can a thesis or dissertation extend a theory?

Yes. The scope of the claim should match the study. A dissertation might provide evidence for a new boundary condition, construct distinction, mechanism, or relationship without claiming that one project has conclusively established a revised theory.

What if my proposed extension is not supported?

That does not make the study worthless. Examine measurement, design, statistical uncertainty where relevant, assumptions, alternative explanations, and whether the proposed theoretical reasoning needs revision. Evidence that fails to support an extension can help delimit which theoretical modifications are plausible.

What is the difference between extending and combining theories?

Extension develops an existing theoretical explanation by changing or adding to its constructs, relationships, mechanisms, or boundaries. Combining theories brings explanatory elements from more than one theoretical tradition together. The distinction can become blurred when an extension imports concepts from another theory, so the intellectual origin of each element should be made explicit.

A Theory Can Change, but the Change Needs to Explain Something

The Bottom Line

You can modify or extend an existing theory when the change addresses a genuine explanatory limitation and produces a more precise account of constructs, relationships, mechanisms, sequence, scope, or boundary conditions.

Do not confuse additional variables, a new research setting, or improved statistical fit with theoretical advancement. Establish what the original theory says, identify what it cannot adequately explain, justify your proposed change, and be clear about where established theory ends and your contribution begins.
