What Should You Do When No Existing Theory Fits Your Research Problem?

If no existing theory fits your research problem, do not force one into the study. First determine why existing theories fall short, then decide whether the study needs a conceptual framework, theoretical extension, multiple perspectives, or genuine theory development.

01 · The Question

What If You Cannot Find a Theory That Actually Fits?

You have searched the literature. Several theories seem vaguely related to your topic, but none quite explains the phenomenon you want to investigate. One omits an important contextual condition. Another was developed for a substantially different problem. A third contains familiar keywords but rests on assumptions that do not match your study.

At this point, researchers sometimes conclude that they must choose whichever theory comes closest. After all, the proposal needs a theoretical framework.

That can be a serious mistake.

The absence of a well-fitting theory may indicate several different things. Your search may be too narrow. The phenomenon may already be theorized under different terminology or in another discipline. An existing theory may require extension rather than rejection. Several theories may provide complementary explanations. Or the phenomenon may genuinely be undertheorized, creating an opportunity for exploratory or theory-building research.

The correct response is therefore not “find any theory.” It is to diagnose why the available theories do not fit.

02 · The Short Answer

Do Not Force a Theory Merely Because You Think You Need One

In Brief

If no existing theory adequately fits your research problem, do not distort the problem or misrepresent a theory simply to create a theoretical framework. First broaden and verify your search, then identify precisely what existing explanations fail to capture.

Depending on that diagnosis, you might use a conceptual framework, apply an existing theory within acknowledged limits, extend or modify a theory, use multiple theoretical perspectives, or conduct research intended to develop new theoretical explanation. “No theory fits” can be a legitimate scholarly starting point, but it requires evidence rather than assumption.

03 · What You Need to Know

First Find Out Why No Theory Seems to Fit

Do not confuse “I have not found a theory” with “no theory exists”

This distinction is fundamental.

A researcher may search for the exact terminology used in the research question and conclude that the phenomenon has no theoretical foundation. Yet another discipline may study the same underlying process using different language.

A researcher investigating reluctance to use generative AI, for example, might search only for “generative AI resistance theory.” Relevant explanations may instead appear in literatures concerning technology adoption, innovation resistance, trust, risk, professional identity, organizational change, self-efficacy, or institutional practice.

Theory searching therefore requires conceptual searching, not merely keyword matching.

Before declaring a theoretical gap, identify the underlying phenomenon, mechanism, actors, level of analysis, and outcome you are trying to explain. Search those concepts across neighboring literatures and disciplines.

Start with the phenomenon, not the fashionable theory

Researchers sometimes reverse the process. They identify a theory that is widely used in their field and then attempt to translate every research problem into its constructs.

A better starting point is the explanatory need.

What exactly remains unexplained? Is the problem about individual decision-making, learning, identity, social interaction, institutional constraint, organizational change, diffusion, motivation, power, or another process?

Once you can articulate what requires explanation, you can evaluate candidate theories according to whether they address that mechanism or process.

This is central to choosing a theory without forcing one to fit.

There are several different kinds of theoretical mismatch

Saying that a theory “doesn't fit” is too vague to guide a methodological decision. Identify the nature of the mismatch.

Type of mismatch What it might mean Possible response
Phenomenon mismatch The theory explains something substantially different from your research problem. Search for another theoretical tradition rather than stretching the theory.
Construct mismatch The theory addresses the phenomenon but omits a concept central to your question. Consider whether extension or a broader conceptual framework is justified.
Context mismatch The theory may explain the phenomenon, but its assumptions or prior applications do not transfer straightforwardly to your context. Apply it cautiously, investigate boundary conditions, or consider modification.
Level-of-analysis mismatch The theory explains individuals while your problem concerns groups, organizations, institutions, or interactions across levels. Seek a theory at the appropriate level or consider complementary perspectives.
Purpose mismatch The theory answers a different kind of question from the one your study asks. Reconsider whether theory is needed in that role at all.
Epistemological or methodological mismatch The assumptions embedded in the theory conflict with how your study conceptualizes knowledge or explanation. Consider another theoretical perspective or explain carefully how theory will be used.

These problems require different responses. Adding another citation cannot solve a mismatch you have not identified.

An imperfect fit does not automatically make a theory unusable

Theories are abstractions. They rarely reproduce every detail of a particular empirical setting.

A theory may still be useful if its central mechanism or propositions apply to the research problem even though some contextual factors fall outside its scope. In that case, the researcher can acknowledge the boundaries rather than claiming perfect coverage.

This distinction matters because expecting a theory to contain every variable relevant to a phenomenon misunderstands what theory does. A useful theory provides explanatory structure; it does not need to function as an encyclopedia of possible influences.

The question is whether what the theory omits is peripheral to your research question or central to it.

A conceptual framework may be more honest than a poorly fitting theory

Sometimes no single established theory adequately organizes the problem, but the literature still provides strong evidence about relevant concepts and relationships.

In such cases, a researcher-developed conceptual framework may be appropriate.

The framework might synthesize concepts from prior empirical findings, established theories, methodological literature, and other defensible sources without pretending that the resulting structure is itself an established theory.

This option is particularly useful when the research problem is interdisciplinary, emerging, or organized around several concepts that have not previously been unified theoretically.

However, “conceptual framework” should not become a convenient label for unsupported intuition. Every important component and proposed relationship still requires justification.

Understanding the difference between theoretical and conceptual frameworks helps prevent that substitution from becoming merely semantic.

You may need more than one existing theory

No single theory may fit because the phenomenon spans mechanisms or levels that different theories address separately.

An individual-level theory might explain motivation while an organizational theory explains institutional constraints. Neither alone is sufficient because the research question concerns the interaction between individual and institutional conditions.

Using more than one theory may then be defensible.

But multiple theories should not become a rescue strategy for an unfocused study. Each additional perspective should solve an identifiable explanatory problem.

You may be looking at an opportunity to extend an existing theory

Suppose an established theory explains most of the phenomenon well, but your research problem reveals a missing construct, relationship, contextual condition, or sequence.

That does not necessarily mean the theory should be discarded.

The gap may create an opportunity for theory elaboration or extension. Methodological scholarship describes theory elaboration as developing new theoretical insight from preexisting conceptual ideas by specifying, contrasting, or restructuring constructs and relationships in response to empirical observations.

For example, researchers might identify a previously unspecified moderator that explains when a theoretical relationship becomes stronger or weaker. They might distinguish two constructs previously treated as one, specify a missing sequence, or clarify how a relationship changes across contexts.

This is more demanding than simply adding a variable to an existing model. If you intend to modify or extend an existing theory, the proposed change should solve a theoretical problem and preserve clarity about what belongs to the original theory and what you are proposing.

You may genuinely have an undertheorized phenomenon

Some phenomena are insufficiently explained by existing theory. This may occur when technologies, practices, social conditions, or empirical patterns emerge faster than theoretical development, or when established literatures have overlooked particular populations and contexts.

Research on an undertheorized phenomenon can be valuable precisely because existing explanations are incomplete.

Methodological debates about theoretical contribution have warned against assuming that every empirical study must begin with a mature theory. Empirical findings for which existing theories provide inadequate explanations can themselves motivate theoretical development.

But claiming that a phenomenon is undertheorized requires literature work. You need to demonstrate what theories have been considered, what they explain, and where their explanatory limitations lie.

No existing theory may mean theory building is appropriate

If existing explanations genuinely fail, one possible research contribution is to develop theoretical explanation from empirical evidence.

Theory building is not simply drawing a framework after collecting data. It involves developing concepts and specifying meaningful relationships, mechanisms, conditions, or propositions that explain observed phenomena.

Qualitative approaches are often associated with theory development because they can reveal processes and meanings not adequately captured by existing structures. But theory building is not restricted to qualitative research, and not every qualitative study is designed to generate theory.

The intended contribution should therefore be explicit. Are you describing a poorly understood phenomenon? Generating concepts? Developing propositions? Elaborating an existing theory? Constructing a new explanation?

Those are related but not interchangeable objectives.

Novel context alone does not prove that existing theory is inadequate

A common theoretical argument is: “This theory has never been applied to our university, country, profession, technology, or population; therefore, a new framework is needed.”

That conclusion does not necessarily follow.

A new context may provide a useful opportunity to examine the scope or boundary conditions of an existing theory. But geographical or technological novelty alone does not establish theoretical novelty.

You need to explain why the new context should alter the theoretical mechanism, assumptions, constructs, or expected relationships.

If the theory's mechanism should operate similarly, applying it in a new setting may be worthwhile replication or generalization research rather than evidence that the theory does not fit.

A theory that fails may itself become the research opportunity

Sometimes the theoretically interesting question is not “What other theory should I use?” but “Why does this theory fail here?”

If an established theory predicts a relationship that repeatedly does not appear under particular conditions, those conditions may expose its boundaries. If participants behave in ways the theory cannot explain, the discrepancy may reveal an omitted mechanism or assumption.

Rather than hiding such mismatch, researchers can potentially challenge the theory with evidence.

Theoretical progress does not require every study to make the chosen theory look correct.

Watch Out

Do not declare that “no theory exists” merely because familiar theories in your immediate discipline do not fit. Search adjacent literatures, examine alternative terminology, consult foundational and review literature, and distinguish a genuine theoretical gap from a search gap.

Your institution may still require a framework

A thesis template or program may require a theoretical or conceptual framework even when the study concerns an undertheorized phenomenon.

That reporting requirement should be respected, but it does not require pretending that an established theory provides a perfect explanation.

You might instead present the closest relevant theoretical perspectives, explain their limitations, and develop a literature-grounded conceptual framework appropriate to the research question, if your institutional conventions permit that approach.

The broader issue is whether the study actually needs a theoretical or conceptual framework and what form that framework should take.

04 · A Practical Example

What to Do Instead of Forcing the Closest Theory

Hypothetical Example

Understanding faculty resistance to mandatory generative AI use

A researcher wants to understand why some university faculty members resist an institutional requirement to incorporate generative AI into teaching. The researcher initially considers a widely used technology adoption theory but discovers that the study is not primarily about voluntary acceptance. It concerns professional autonomy, institutional authority, perceived pedagogical risk, and resistance to a mandated practice.

Do not force the nearest theory The researcher does not redefine resistance as simply low behavioral intention merely because an adoption theory provides convenient constructs.
Broaden the theoretical search The literature search expands beyond technology adoption to organizational change, professional autonomy, innovation resistance, institutional processes, and related explanations.
Diagnose the remaining gap Several theories explain parts of the phenomenon, but no single theory adequately captures the interaction between professional judgment and institutional mandate.
Choose a defensible strategy Depending on the final research question and methodology, the researcher might use complementary theoretical perspectives, construct a literature-grounded conceptual framework, or design an exploratory study intended to develop a more adequate explanation.
State the contribution accurately The researcher explains what existing theories illuminate, what they leave unresolved, and what the present study is positioned to investigate rather than claiming prematurely to have invented a new theory.

The absence of an obvious theory has improved the research problem. It forced the researcher to specify what actually requires explanation rather than translating the phenomenon into whichever theoretical vocabulary happened to be most familiar.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When No Theory Seems to Fit

Misconception

You must choose the closest theory anyway

A poorly fitting theory can distort the research question, constructs, measures, and interpretation. An explicit account of theoretical limitations is preferable to presenting an inappropriate theory as though it explains the problem.

Misconception

If no theory uses your exact topic terminology, the phenomenon has no theory

Theoretical explanations often travel under different disciplinary vocabularies. Search for underlying mechanisms and concepts rather than only the surface terminology of the research topic.

Misconception

A new technology automatically requires a new theory

Novel technologies can create new phenomena, but they can also instantiate processes already explained by existing theory. Researchers should establish what is theoretically different rather than assuming that technological novelty requires theoretical novelty.

Misconception

If an existing theory is incomplete, you can simply add variables

Adding variables may improve empirical prediction without improving theoretical explanation. A defensible extension should explain why the new construct matters, how it relates to the existing mechanism, and what theoretical limitation the modification addresses.

Misconception

If no theory fits, your study is automatically theory-building

No. A study may be descriptive, exploratory, concept-generating, framework-developing, or theory-building. Theory construction requires an explicit theoretical contribution rather than merely the absence of an existing framework.

Misconception

A conceptual framework lets you include whatever seems relevant

A researcher-developed framework still needs intellectual discipline. Its concepts and proposed relationships should be supported by literature, evidence, methodological reasoning, or clearly articulated assumptions.

06 · What This Means for You

Treat Poor Theoretical Fit as a Diagnosis, Not an Emergency

A simple decision framework

If you have searched only your immediate topic terminology
Broaden the search to underlying mechanisms, constructs, neighboring disciplines, and alternative terminology before concluding that no theory fits.
If one theory explains the central mechanism but misses peripheral contextual factors
Consider using it within clearly stated boundaries rather than expecting it to explain everything.
If an existing theory is useful but misses something central to the research question
Consider whether a theoretically justified modification or extension is warranted.
If different theories explain distinct necessary parts of the problem
Consider using multiple theories or a carefully integrated framework.
If no established theory adequately organizes the relevant concepts
Consider a literature-grounded conceptual framework rather than falsely presenting it as established theory.
If substantial literature searching confirms that existing explanations cannot account for the phenomenon
Consider an exploratory, theory-elaborating, or theory-building design appropriate to the research question and methodology.

Document the reasoning behind your decision. A strong justification might explain that several established theories were considered, identify why each was insufficient for the specific explanatory problem, and show why the selected alternative is more appropriate.

That is considerably more persuasive than writing, “No existing theory was found, so the researcher developed a framework.”

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Concluding That No Existing Theory Fits

Verify the theoretical gap:
Define the phenomenon or mechanism you need the theory to explain rather than searching only for your topic wording.
Search alternative terminology, synonyms, constructs, and related processes.
Examine theories from neighboring disciplines when the research problem crosses disciplinary boundaries.
Consult review articles and foundational sources that compare theoretical explanations of the phenomenon.
Identify exactly why each plausible theory is insufficient: construct, context, purpose, level, assumption, or explanatory mismatch.
Distinguish an imperfect theory from a genuinely inappropriate theory.
Consider whether a conceptual framework, multiple theories, or an extension of an existing theory would address the problem before proposing an entirely new theory.
Do not claim theoretical novelty solely because the population, country, institution, or technology is new.
Match any theory-building claim to a research design capable of developing and supporting theoretical explanation.
08 · Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Research When No Theory Fits

Can I conduct a study if no existing theory fits?

Yes. The absence of a suitable theory does not make a research problem invalid. You still need to explain how the study is intellectually grounded and why existing explanations are insufficient. Depending on the purpose, the research may use a conceptual framework, multiple perspectives, theory elaboration, or a theory-building approach.

Can I create my own theoretical framework?

You can develop a conceptual or theoretical structure for a study, but terminology matters. A researcher-developed framework should not be presented as an established theory without appropriate theoretical development and evidence. Explain which elements come from prior theory, empirical literature, and your own synthesis.

Can I modify an existing theory because it does not completely fit?

Potentially. Modification should address an identifiable theoretical limitation and be justified conceptually rather than made solely to improve statistical fit. Clearly distinguish the original theory from your proposed extension or adaptation.

Does a new research topic need a new theory?

No. A new topic may involve mechanisms that existing theories already explain. The need for new theory depends on whether existing explanations can account for the phenomenon, not simply whether the empirical setting is novel.

What if a theory fits most of my study but not one important factor?

Determine whether that factor is central to the research question and whether the theory is expected to explain it. You might treat the factor as contextual, develop a conceptual framework around the theory, or propose a justified extension. An incomplete theory is not necessarily an unusable theory.

Can I use several theories if no single theory fits?

Yes, when different theories make distinct contributions required by the research question. Do not assemble several theories merely to cover every variable. Explain what each perspective contributes and whether they remain separate or are genuinely integrated.

How can I prove that no suitable theory exists?

You generally cannot prove the nonexistence of every possible theory. Instead, conduct and document a sufficiently broad literature search, identify the most plausible theoretical perspectives, and explain their limitations relative to the specific research problem. Phrase the conclusion proportionately, such as stating that no adequate framework was identified in the literature reviewed.

Can the absence of a suitable theory be a research gap?

Potentially. A phenomenon may be undertheorized when existing explanations leave important mechanisms, relationships, or conditions unresolved. Demonstrating that gap requires critical engagement with the relevant theoretical literature rather than simply reporting that you could not find a theory.

No Theory Is Better Than the Wrong Theory

The Bottom Line

If no existing theory adequately fits your research problem, do not force one into the study; establish why the available explanations fall short and choose a theoretical strategy that reflects the actual needs of the research.

Broaden the search before claiming a theoretical gap. If the mismatch remains, an existing theory with acknowledged boundaries, a conceptual framework, multiple perspectives, theory extension, or genuine theory development may be appropriate. A poor fit is not merely an inconvenience. Sometimes it is where the theoretically interesting part of the study begins.
