Funding and Collaboration Grow From Credible Research Relationships
Research Can Demonstrate What You Are Capable of Doing
Completed research provides evidence of capability. It can show that a researcher or institution understands a field, can use particular methods, has access to relevant populations or datasets, can manage a project, can collaborate, and can communicate findings.
A publication record may contribute to this evidence, but capability is broader than publication count. A potential collaborator might be interested because your team possesses a specialized laboratory, longitudinal dataset, qualitative expertise, software system, field site, theoretical perspective, or relationship with a particular community.
The key question from a prospective partner is often not simply, “How many papers have you published?” but “What can you contribute that helps us answer this question?”
Small Projects Can Generate Preliminary Evidence for Larger Ones
Research often develops iteratively. An exploratory or pilot study may establish feasibility, refine procedures, identify effect sizes or patterns where appropriate, reveal recruitment challenges, generate preliminary data, or clarify which questions deserve larger investigation.
Such work can strengthen later proposals when preliminary evidence is relevant to the funder's criteria. It can demonstrate that the research team has already engaged seriously with the problem rather than proposing an entirely untested plan.
This does not mean every grant requires preliminary data. Requirements vary by funder, program, discipline, and funding mechanism. Applicants should always consult the current solicitation rather than assuming that conventions from one scheme apply to another.
Funding Usually Follows Fit, Not Merely Quality
A strong project can still be unsuitable for a particular funding opportunity. Funders operate with defined missions, eligibility requirements, program objectives, budgets, timelines, geographic scopes, and evaluation criteria.
Researchers therefore need to distinguish between having a worthwhile project and having a project that fits a particular call.
Research quality
Whether the proposed inquiry is rigorous, important, feasible, ethical, and capable of producing credible knowledge.
Funding fit
Whether the proposal aligns with the specific funder's objectives, eligibility rules, scope, priorities, budget, and evaluation criteria.
A scientifically strong proposal can be rejected because it is outside scope. Conversely, alignment with a funding priority does not excuse weak methods.
Funders Assess More Than the Research Question
Major research funders commonly evaluate several dimensions of a proposal. The exact criteria differ, but reviewers may consider intellectual or scientific merit, significance, approach, investigators, research environment, feasibility, broader benefits, or related factors.
For example, the U.S. National Science Foundation currently evaluates proposals using its two National Science Board-approved merit review criteria, Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts, alongside additional solicitation-specific criteria where applicable. NIH peer review uses a different framework, and individual funding opportunities can add further considerations.
The practical lesson is not to memorize one universal grant formula. There is none. Researchers should read the current criteria of the actual funder and program to which they are applying.
Research Can Reveal Why Collaboration Is Necessary
Some research problems exceed the capabilities of one person or organization. A project may require expertise from several disciplines, access to multiple sites, specialist equipment, community knowledge, large datasets, clinical populations, engineering capability, implementation partners, or international comparison.
In these situations, collaboration is not decorative. It exists because the research question requires complementary capability.
A strong partnership can therefore make a project possible that no participating institution could conduct as effectively alone.
Complementarity Is More Valuable Than Simply Adding More Partners
Research consortia sometimes become large because collaboration itself is viewed as desirable. Yet every additional partner creates coordination costs, communication requirements, governance questions, data-sharing issues, and potential conflicts over responsibilities or credit.
A useful partnership should have a clear rationale. One organization might contribute methodological expertise, another access to participants, another specialized infrastructure, and another implementation knowledge.

Trust Is Research Infrastructure Too
Partnerships require more than complementary CVs. Collaborators need confidence that others will meet commitments, communicate problems, manage data appropriately, allocate credit fairly, respect agreements, and act responsibly when difficulties arise.
Trust often develops through smaller interactions before major collaborative projects appear. Researchers may meet through conferences, scholarly networks, previous projects, professional organizations, shared supervision, working groups, or informal exchanges of expertise.
Repeated successful collaboration can reduce uncertainty about future partnerships because participants already understand each other's working practices and capabilities.
Authorship and Credit Should Be Discussed Early
Collaboration can become difficult when expectations about contribution, leadership, authorship, data ownership, intellectual property, dissemination, or decision-making remain implicit.
Where publication is expected, teams should use applicable authorship and contributorship standards rather than allocating authorship solely according to seniority, institutional status, funding authority, or anticipated career benefit.
Large projects may also require formal agreements covering data access, confidentiality, intellectual property, financial responsibilities, governance, and dispute resolution.
Watch Out
Do not postpone difficult partnership questions until the manuscript is being written. Roles, governance, data responsibilities, expected contributions, decision processes, and principles for credit should be discussed early and revisited when the project changes.
International Collaboration Can Expand Capability but Also Create Inequities
International research can combine different populations, settings, infrastructures, and perspectives. It can make comparative research possible and connect institutions with expertise unavailable locally.
However, partnerships can reproduce inequalities when one institution controls funding, research questions, analysis, authorship, and dissemination while another primarily supplies participants, field access, or data.
Capacity-building initiatives such as ESSENCE on Health Research have emphasized equitable research partnerships and research-capacity strengthening, particularly in collaborations involving different levels of institutional resources.
A productive partnership should therefore consider not only what each party contributes to the current project, but also whether opportunities for leadership, learning, infrastructure, authorship, and future capability are distributed appropriately.
Funding Can Build Capacity for Future Funding
A successfully managed grant can develop budgeting expertise, research administration, reporting systems, project leadership, data infrastructure, technical capabilities, and relationships with collaborators. These capabilities may make later applications more feasible.
This creates a cumulative cycle. Existing capacity can improve an institution's ability to compete for research opportunities, while successful projects can strengthen institutional research capacity further.
Yet cumulative advantage can also create disparities. Institutions with substantial existing resources may be better positioned to obtain additional resources. Funders and policymakers sometimes respond through capacity-building programs, institutional-development awards, geographic initiatives, or other mechanisms, but these differ considerably across funding systems.
Research Visibility Can Help Potential Collaborators Find You
Researchers cannot collaborate with expertise they cannot identify. Publications, conference presentations, research profiles, institutional websites, repositories, scholarly networks, and other forms of dissemination can make expertise discoverable.
Visibility should not be confused with quality. It simply increases the chance that relevant people can encounter the work. Once contact occurs, the credibility and suitability of the researcher or institution still need to be assessed.
Funding and Partnerships Can Benefit Institutions Beyond the Immediate Project
External projects can bring resources, training opportunities, equipment, networks, student opportunities, and expertise into an institution. They may also connect research with government, industry, healthcare, schools, communities, or other sectors.
These are among the broader benefits research can provide to universities and research institutions.
Institutions should nevertheless consider costs. Complex partnerships consume administrative and academic time. Grants may require co-funding, reporting, infrastructure, compliance, or long-term commitments. External funding should therefore be assessed for strategic and scientific value rather than treated as an unqualified gain.
A Partnership Is Successful Only if the Relationship Works
Researchers often evaluate collaborations through outputs: Was the paper published? Was the grant awarded? Was the project completed?
Those outcomes matter, but sustainable collaboration also depends on process. Did partners communicate effectively? Were responsibilities fulfilled? Was credit allocated fairly? Were disagreements managed? Did each organization gain something appropriate? Would the participants willingly work together again?
A project that produces one publication while destroying trust may be less valuable institutionally than its output count suggests.
