Why Does Research Matter in Global University Rankings?

Research matters substantially in major global university rankings because ranking systems use indicators related to research reputation, publications, citations, funding, collaboration, and research influence. The exact indicators and weights differ, however, so there is no single formula for turning research into ranking performance.

01 · The Question

Why Can Research Have Such a Large Effect on a University's Global Rank?

A university may educate thousands of students, provide professional training, serve its community, and produce excellent graduates. Yet when global university rankings are discussed, attention often shifts quickly to publications, citations, research reputation, international collaboration, and research funding.

Why does research occupy such a prominent position?

Part of the answer lies in what global rankings can compare across countries. Student learning, curriculum quality, community contribution, and educational experience are difficult to measure consistently across thousands of institutions operating in very different systems. Research, by contrast, generates internationally visible data through scholarly publications, citations, funding, collaborations, and reputation surveys.

That does not mean research is the only important function of a university. It means that research is particularly visible within several influential global ranking methodologies, and institutions seeking to understand their ranking performance need to know exactly how each system measures it.

02 · The Short Answer

Research Matters Because Major Rankings Give It Substantial Weight

In Brief

Research matters in global university rankings because major ranking systems assign substantial weight to indicators such as research reputation, citation impact, research productivity, research income, research excellence, and international research collaboration.

The exact relationship depends on the ranking methodology. QS and Times Higher Education, for example, measure research differently, use different indicators and weights, and normalize bibliometric data in different ways. A university therefore cannot assume that simply producing more papers will improve every ranking in the same way.

03 · What You Need to Know

Global Rankings Convert Selected Dimensions of Research Into Indicators

A Ranking Is a Measurement System, Not a Direct Observation of University Quality

A global ranking begins by deciding which aspects of universities it wants to compare. It then selects indicators, obtains data, applies normalization and other methodological procedures, assigns weights, and combines scores into a ranking.

The resulting rank therefore reflects performance according to that particular methodology. Change the indicators or weights and the ordering can change.

This distinction is essential when interpreting research performance. A university's position does not directly measure an abstract property called “research quality.” It reflects how the university performs on the research-related indicators included in that ranking alongside the ranking's other components.

QS Gives Research and Discovery Half of Its Current Overall Weight

In the current QS World University Rankings methodology, the Research and Discovery lens accounts for 50% of the overall score. Academic Reputation carries 30%, while Citations per Faculty carries 20%. QS describes this lens as measuring research quality, volume, and reputation within the academic community.

Research also appears elsewhere in the QS methodology. The International Research Network indicator contributes 5% under Global Engagement and measures the geographic diversity of an institution's sustained international research partnerships.

This means research-related activity influences QS through more than publication volume alone. Reputation, citation performance, and international research relationships all matter within the current methodology.

Times Higher Education Gives Research an Even Broader Methodological Role

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 uses 18 indicators grouped into five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry.

Research Environment accounts for 29% of the overall score. It includes Research Reputation at 18%, Research Income at 5.5%, and Research Productivity at 5.5%.

Research Quality accounts for another 30%. It includes Citation Impact at 15%, Research Strength at 5%, Research Excellence at 5%, and Research Influence at 5%.

Research also contributes to International Outlook through international co-authorship, which carries 2.5%. Industry measures include research-related dimensions such as industry income and patents.

Research is therefore embedded across a substantial portion of THE's overall methodology rather than represented by one publication or citation indicator.

Research Reputation Matters Because Rankings Include Peer Judgments

Not every research indicator is bibliometric. Both QS and THE incorporate academic reputation.

QS's Academic Reputation indicator asks academics to identify institutions demonstrating academic excellence within relevant subject areas. It carries 30% of the flagship ranking.

THE separates teaching and research reputation. Its Research Reputation indicator carries 18% in the 2026 overall ranking and draws on its Academic Reputation Survey.

Reputation can reflect accumulated scholarly visibility, historical standing, influential researchers, research networks, and perceptions of institutional excellence. It may therefore change more slowly than annual publication counts.

Citations Matter Because Rankings Use Them as Signals of Scholarly Influence

A citation occurs when one scholarly work references another. Ranking organizations use citation data partly because citations provide observable evidence that research has entered subsequent scholarly communication.

QS uses Citations per Faculty, dividing citation counts by faculty numbers to account for institutional size. THE uses several citation-based indicators within its Research Quality pillar, including citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence.

The methodological details differ considerably, which is why citations matter differently across university rankings.

Citations should nevertheless not be interpreted as direct measures of research quality. Papers can be cited for many reasons, citation practices differ among disciplines, and influential work is not necessarily correct or socially beneficial.

Rankings Try to Account for Disciplinary Differences

Raw publication and citation counts would systematically advantage fields in which researchers publish and cite more frequently. Major rankings therefore apply normalization procedures.

THE states that its citation data are normalized to reflect disciplinary differences. Its research productivity measure is also normalized by subject and scaled for institutional size.

QS similarly uses methodological adjustments within its citations indicator to address differences among fields and divides citations by faculty size.

Normalization reduces some distortions, but it does not make every disciplinary difference disappear. Bibliometric coverage, publication formats, language, collaboration patterns, and field structures still affect what becomes visible to ranking systems.

Research Productivity Is Not Simply the Number of Papers

THE's Research Productivity indicator counts publications in Scopus-indexed journals relative to the number of scholars and normalizes the measure for subject profile. QS's flagship ranking does not use a standalone publication-count indicator with the same structure, although research volume contributes indirectly to citation performance and its broader Research and Discovery lens.

This distinction illustrates why institutions should not ask simply, “How many publications do we need to improve our ranking?” The denominator, subject normalization, citation performance, eligibility rules, and other indicators may all affect the result.

Research Funding Can Matter Directly in Some Rankings

THE includes Research Income at 5.5% within its Research Environment pillar. Research income is scaled against academic staff numbers, adjusted for purchasing-power parity, and normalized for subject profile.

THE acknowledges that research-income comparisons are influenced by national policy and economic circumstances. A university operating in a well-funded national research system may face a very different environment from one in a country with limited competitive research funding.

QS's flagship methodology does not use an equivalent direct research-income indicator. This is another example of how the same university can present a different research profile under different ranking systems.

International Collaboration Can Affect Ranking Performance

Research increasingly crosses institutional and national boundaries, and global rankings capture some of this activity.

QS's International Research Network indicator carries 5% and focuses on the geographic diversity and sustainability of international research partnerships. THE's International Outlook pillar includes International Collaboration at 2.5%, based on the proportion of relevant publications with at least one international co-author, with methodological adjustments including subject and country considerations.

International collaboration should not be pursued merely to manufacture a ranking indicator. The strongest collaborations exist because partners contribute expertise, data, infrastructure, settings, or perspectives needed for the research. As discussed in research funding, partnerships, and collaboration, partnership quality matters beyond the existence of international co-authorship.

These figures describe the current published methodologies and may change in future editions. Institutions should verify the methodology for the exact ranking year being analyzed.

Subject Rankings Can Use Different Research Weights

Even within one ranking organization, the importance of research indicators can change by subject.

THE's 2026 subject rankings use the same broad set of indicators as the overall ranking but recalibrate their weights to reflect disciplinary research cultures. Citation impact, for example, receives less weight in Arts and Humanities than in several science-based subjects because publication and citation practices differ.

QS subject rankings also use subject-specific publication thresholds and adjust citation-related weights according to disciplinary patterns.

An institutional strategy based only on the overall ranking methodology may therefore fail to explain performance within particular disciplines.

Eligibility Rules Can Make Research Volume Matter Before Scoring Even Begins

Research output can also determine whether an institution is eligible to receive a rank.

For THE's World University Rankings 2026, institutions can be excluded if they produced fewer than 1,000 relevant publications over the five-year period from 2020 to 2024, with a minimum of 100 per year. THE also applies other eligibility criteria.

This means research output may sometimes matter not only because it contributes to a score, but because insufficient output prevents an institution from entering the ranked table under that methodology.

Eligibility requirements should not be generalized across rankings. QS uses its own inclusion and methodological rules.

Ranking Performance Is Not the Same as Research Quality

Research quality The credibility, rigor, significance, transparency, originality, or fitness for purpose of research, assessed using evidence appropriate to the work.
Research ranking performance How an institution performs on the research-related indicators, normalization procedures, and weights defined by a particular ranking methodology.

The two can be related without being identical. A university may conduct excellent research in areas poorly captured by the databases or indicators used by a ranking. Another may improve ranking performance by increasing outputs or collaborations that fit the methodology without every additional study being more important than what came before.

Rankings Can Create Institutional Incentives

Because rankings are visible to students, governments, partners, donors, faculty, and the media, universities may allocate resources specifically to improve ranking performance. Research recruitment, publication incentives, international collaboration, research funding, and citation strategies can all become part of institutional planning.

This creates a legitimate management question but also a potential distortion. If the ranking indicator becomes the target, the institution may begin optimizing the metric rather than the underlying research capability or contribution.

This is why research quality and research quantity in university rankings need to be distinguished carefully.

Watch Out

Ranking methodologies change. Never build institutional policy around remembered weights, screenshots, secondary articles, or a previous edition. Verify the current methodology directly from the ranking organization before making strategic decisions.

A Ranking Captures Only What Its Methodology Chooses to Measure

Universities produce forms of value that may be difficult to represent in a global league table. Local community research, scholarship in languages with limited database coverage, specialized professional contributions, teaching innovations, cultural work, and research addressing small populations may have substantial value without producing large citation counts or global reputational visibility.

This does not make ranking indicators meaningless. It means they should be interpreted for what they are: selected measures designed to compare institutions at global scale.

The Same Research Improvement Can Affect Two Rankings Differently

Hypothetical Example

A University Strengthens Its Research Program

Suppose a university invests over several years in researcher development, improves grant support, increases high-quality publications, develops international collaborations, and produces research that begins receiving greater scholarly attention.

Publication growth The university's research output increases, potentially affecting indicators where publication volume or productivity contributes directly or indirectly.
Citation growth More of the institution's research is cited, which may affect QS Citations per Faculty and several THE Research Quality measures through their respective methodologies.
Grant success Research income increases, which can contribute directly to THE's Research Income indicator but does not have an equivalent direct indicator in the flagship QS methodology.
International collaboration The institution expands sustained international research partnerships, potentially contributing to both rankings through different international research indicators.
Reputation If scholarly recognition grows over time, academic or research reputation indicators may eventually change, although reputational effects need not follow immediately from annual output changes.

The university has one evolving research system, but QS and THE translate that system into different scores. This is why a strategy based on “improving the rankings” is underspecified until the institution identifies which ranking, which indicator, and which underlying capability it intends to improve.

Common Misunderstandings About Research and University Rankings

Misconception

Global Rankings Measure Research Quality Directly

Rankings use indicators intended to represent dimensions of research performance. Citation impact, reputation, funding, and productivity can provide useful information, but none is identical to the methodological quality or importance of every study conducted by the institution.

Misconception

Publishing More Will Automatically Improve a University's Rank

Additional publications can affect some indicators, but overall ranking performance depends on methodology, normalization, faculty size, citations, reputation, research quality measures, other non-research indicators, and the performance of competing universities. This is why producing more research does not automatically improve a university's ranking.

Misconception

QS and THE Measure Research the Same Way

They do not. QS currently concentrates its flagship research measurement heavily in Academic Reputation and Citations per Faculty, with International Research Network elsewhere in the methodology. THE separates Research Environment and Research Quality into several indicators and also includes international collaboration and industry-related measures.

Misconception

Citations Are the Same as Research Quality

Citations indicate that research has been referenced by other scholarly works. Citation patterns are informative but affected by field, publication type, topic, collaboration, age, and other factors. Rankings apply adjustments because raw citation counts are not directly comparable across disciplines.

Misconception

A Higher-Ranked University Must Produce Better Research in Every Field

An overall institutional rank combines many indicators across the university. It does not establish that every department or research group at the higher-ranked institution outperforms every counterpart at a lower-ranked institution.

Understand the Methodology Before Turning Rankings Into Research Strategy

For researchers, ranking indicators provide context for institutional decisions but should not determine whether an individual research question is worthwhile. For university leaders, the methodology can help identify why an institution performs as it does, but improving the underlying research system is generally more defensible than chasing isolated indicators.

A simple ranking analysis framework

If you want to understand an institution's ranking
Identify the exact ranking edition, indicators, weights, data windows, eligibility rules, normalization procedures, and data sources.
If a research indicator is weak
Determine whether the underlying issue concerns productivity, citation visibility, reputation, funding, collaboration, institutional size, disciplinary profile, or another methodological factor.
If improving the underlying capability also advances institutional mission
Investment may create value beyond the ranking and may be more sustainable than an indicator-specific intervention.
If a proposed intervention exists only to manipulate an indicator
Examine whether it creates genuine research value, unintended incentives, or risks to research integrity and institutional priorities.

A ranking can tell an institution how it performs according to a particular model. It cannot decide what the university's research mission ought to be.

Before using ranking data for research decisions, check:
Which ranking and exact edition are you examining?
What research-related indicators are included and what weight does each carry?
Which indicators use bibliometric data, institutional submissions, surveys, or other sources?
How are institutional size and disciplinary differences handled?
What publication and citation windows are used?
Are there minimum research-output or other eligibility requirements?
Are you distinguishing research ranking performance from research quality itself?
Would the proposed research strategy still benefit the institution if the ranking methodology changed?

Does international research collaboration improve rankings?

It can. QS currently assigns 5% to International Research Network, while THE assigns 2.5% to International Collaboration. The indicators measure international research relationships differently, so simply increasing international co-authorship does not guarantee identical effects.

Does a high global rank prove that a university's research is better?

No. A high rank indicates strong performance under the ranking's complete methodology. It does not prove that every study, researcher, or discipline at that university is superior to those at lower-ranked institutions.

The practical lesson is not simply to produce more research. Universities need to understand which research dimensions a particular ranking measures, how those indicators are calculated, and whether efforts to improve them also strengthen the underlying research system. Ranking performance is an outcome of a methodology, not a universal definition of research excellence.
