The Labels Matter Less Than the Claims Behind Them
A theory tries to explain
In research, theory usually goes beyond identifying concepts. It proposes something about how or why phenomena occur, how concepts are related, or what mechanisms may account for observed patterns.
A theory may contain constructs, assumptions, propositions, mechanisms, boundary conditions, or predicted relationships. Not every theory contains all of these in the same form. What distinguishes theory from a simple collection of concepts is its explanatory ambition.
Suppose researchers observe that students who believe a technology will improve their academic performance are more willing to use it. Merely identifying that association is not necessarily a theory. A theory would provide a broader account of why such beliefs should influence behavioral intention and how those concepts relate to other relevant factors.
That explanatory function is why understanding what theory actually does in a research study is more useful than memorizing a definition.
A model represents something selectively
A model is generally a simplified representation of a phenomenon, system, process, or proposed set of relationships. It deliberately leaves things out. That is part of its usefulness.
Models can take many forms. A conceptual model may depict relationships among constructs. A statistical model expresses relationships mathematically. A process model may represent stages or sequences. A computational model may simulate the behavior of a system. Consequently, “model” does not refer to one uniform research object.
In theory-oriented research, a conceptual model often translates selected theoretical ideas into a more specific representation of what will be examined. For instance, a broad theory might contain numerous constructs and relationships, while a particular study models only three constructs and two hypothesized paths relevant to its research question.
The model is therefore not necessarily a competing explanation. It may be a more focused representation of part of the explanation.
A framework organizes how you look at the problem
Framework is perhaps the broadest and most inconsistently used of the three terms. It commonly refers to an organized structure of concepts, categories, assumptions, or relationships that helps researchers determine what matters and how elements of a problem fit together.
A framework does not always make the same explanatory claims as a theory. Some frameworks primarily classify or organize phenomena. Others identify domains that researchers should consider. Still others incorporate established theories and empirical findings into a structure tailored to a particular problem.
Research frameworks can therefore function as intellectual scaffolding. They help make the logic connecting the problem, literature, concepts, research questions, methods, and interpretation visible.
Theoretical framework is not simply another word for theory
A useful distinction is between a theory itself and the theoretical framework of a particular study.
The theory exists independently of your project. Your theoretical framework describes how that theory, or relevant parts of it, is being used to structure your investigation.
If an established theory contains eight constructs but your research question concerns only three, reproducing all eight does not automatically strengthen your study. Your framework should explain which theoretical elements matter, why they matter, and how they inform the research design.
This also explains why deciding how much of a theory your study actually needs is a substantive decision rather than a formatting exercise.
A conceptual framework may integrate more than one source of reasoning
A conceptual framework is often constructed for a particular study. It may draw on established theories, empirical findings, prior conceptual work, methodological assumptions, and carefully justified researcher reasoning.
For example, researchers studying faculty adoption of generative AI might combine concepts concerning perceived usefulness, AI literacy, assessment practices, institutional support, and perceived risk because the literature suggests that all are relevant to the research problem. If they are not claiming that these concepts collectively constitute an established theory, calling the resulting structure a conceptual framework may be more accurate.
This distinction between theoretical and conceptual frameworks is especially useful when deciding how strongly your study is tied to an existing explanatory system.

A theory can have a model
The distinction becomes easier to understand when you stop treating theory and model as mutually exclusive labels.
A theory may be represented through one or more models. Researchers can construct a model from selected theoretical propositions and test that model empirically. The results may then provide evidence relevant to the theory.
This matters because testing one model derived from a theory is not necessarily equivalent to testing the entire theory. A study may examine only selected constructs, relationships, populations, or conditions.
A framework can contain theories and models
Frameworks can operate at a broader organizational level. A framework developed for a particular research problem might incorporate constructs from an established theory, findings from previous studies, and a conceptual model showing the relationships that the researchers intend to investigate.
That does not mean the words are interchangeable. It means they can be nested or related.
Theory

These are useful heuristics, not universal definitions. A particular scholarly tradition may define them differently.
Terminology genuinely varies across disciplines
There is no single international authority that assigns every scholarly idea to an official category called theory, model, or framework. Published methodological literature repeatedly documents inconsistent terminology.
In some fields, a model may be highly formal and mathematically specified. In others, “model” may refer to a conceptual diagram. Some authors reserve theory for explanatory systems with considerable empirical support, while others use the term more broadly for organized propositions capable of generating explanation or prediction.
Framework is similarly elastic. Researchers may encounter theoretical frameworks, conceptual frameworks, analytical frameworks, implementation frameworks, evaluation frameworks, and methodological frameworks. These structures do not necessarily perform identical functions.
Watch Out
Do not rename an established scholarly theory as a “model,” or a published model as a “theory,” merely because another label sounds more appropriate to you. Check how the original developers describe it, examine subsequent literature, and explain its function in your study. Terminological precision is particularly important when the distinction affects the claims you make.
The diagram does not determine what something is
A theory can be illustrated with boxes and arrows. So can a model. So can a conceptual framework.
The visual appearance tells you very little by itself.
A diagram becomes meaningful only when you understand what its elements represent and what the connecting arrows claim. Does an arrow mean correlation, causation, influence, sequence, moderation, mediation, information flow, or simply conceptual association? Those are substantially different claims.
Calling a diagram a framework does not resolve this ambiguity. Researchers should define the concepts and explain the meaning of proposed relationships in the accompanying text.
04 · A Practical Example
How Theory, Framework, and Model Can Appear in One Study
Hypothetical Example
Explaining faculty adoption of generative AI
Suppose researchers want to understand why university faculty members decide to adopt generative AI for teaching. Their literature review identifies an established technology-adoption theory as relevant, while previous studies also suggest that institutional AI policies and AI literacy may matter in their particular context.
Theory The established adoption theory provides an explanation for why particular beliefs may influence behavioral intention and technology use.
Framework The researchers develop the intellectual structure of the study by connecting relevant theoretical constructs with additional concepts justified by previous research on AI literacy and institutional conditions.
Model They represent the specific relationships they intend to examine in a diagram showing the selected constructs and hypothesized paths among them.
The three terms are related, but they are not performing identical jobs. The theory contributes explanatory logic. The framework organizes how that logic and other relevant knowledge inform this particular study. The model represents the specific relationships selected for investigation.
Another discipline might label these elements somewhat differently. What makes the study understandable is not merely getting the nouns “right,” but explicitly stating what each element represents and how it is being used.
06 · What This Means for You
Identify What You Have Before Deciding What to Call It
When you encounter a theory, model, or framework that may be useful, start with the original publication or another authoritative source describing it. Determine what its developers call it, what components it contains, and what claims it makes.
A simple decision framework
If the structure principally explains how or why phenomena occur or constructs relate
You are probably dealing with theory or a theoretically specified explanation.
If it principally represents selected components, relationships, processes, or mechanisms
Model may be the more appropriate description.
If it principally organizes concepts, perspectives, domains, or assumptions for examining a problem
Framework may be the more appropriate description.
If the original literature uses several labels
Acknowledge the terminology and explicitly define how you are using the term in your study rather than pretending the inconsistency does not exist.
Once you establish that you are working with a theory, the next question is whether it actually fits your problem. Choosing an appropriate theory requires examining its constructs, assumptions, explanatory scope, empirical use, and compatibility with your research question rather than selecting it because it is familiar.
Terminology should clarify your reasoning. It should not become the research problem itself.
