Does Every Research Study Need a Theoretical or Conceptual Framework?

Not every research study needs a named theoretical or conceptual framework in the same form. What matters is whether the study has a defensible intellectual foundation and whether an explicit framework genuinely helps shape the research rather than being added merely to satisfy convention.

01 · The Question

Does Every Study Really Need a Framework?

You may have been told that every research study must have a theoretical framework, a conceptual framework, or perhaps both. In some universities, the requirement is so familiar that choosing a framework can become an almost automatic step in proposal writing: identify a topic, formulate the research questions, find a theory, and draw a diagram.

But research methodology is not quite that mechanical.

Different research traditions use theory and conceptual frameworks differently. Some studies are explicitly designed to test, apply, extend, or challenge an established theory. Others use a researcher-constructed conceptual framework to organize relevant concepts and anticipated relationships. Still others, particularly certain inductive or exploratory approaches, may deliberately avoid imposing a detailed framework at the beginning because doing so could constrain what emerges from the data.

The useful question, therefore, is not simply whether every study must contain a section labeled “Theoretical Framework” or “Conceptual Framework.” The more important question is what intellectual structure the study actually needs and what role that structure should play in the research.

No. Not every research study necessarily needs a formally named theoretical or conceptual framework, and whether one should be used depends on the research question, methodology, purpose, disciplinary conventions, and institutional or publication requirements.

Every defensible study still needs an intellectual rationale: its questions, assumptions, design choices, and interpretation should be grounded in relevant knowledge. An explicit framework is valuable when it genuinely organizes or explains the inquiry, but attaching a theory merely because a template requires one can produce a weaker study rather than a stronger one.

03 · What You Need to Know

The Real Issue Is What Intellectual Work the Framework Performs

A framework is not just a required diagram or chapter heading

One reason this question causes confusion is that “framework” can refer to several different things. A theoretical framework generally involves applying an existing theory, or theoretically grounded set of ideas, to a particular research problem. A conceptual framework is more commonly constructed by the researcher to organize the concepts, assumptions, literature, and relationships relevant to the particular study.

The distinction is not perfectly standardized across disciplines. Authors sometimes use the terms differently or even interchangeably. What matters more than the label is whether you can explain where the framework came from and what it actually does in the study. If you are uncertain about the distinction, understanding how theoretical and conceptual frameworks differ should come before deciding whether your study needs either one.

Theoretical framework Typically applies an existing theory or theoretical perspective to help explain, interpret, predict, or investigate the phenomenon being studied.
Conceptual framework Typically organizes the concepts, assumptions, evidence, and proposed relationships that the researcher considers important for understanding the particular study.

Neither should exist merely as an ornament in the literature review. If a framework is claimed to guide a study, readers should usually be able to see its influence somewhere in the research questions, variables or concepts, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or discussion.

Every study needs grounding, but grounding is not identical to naming a formal theory

A study cannot be intellectually unanchored. Researchers make decisions about what counts as a problem, which questions deserve investigation, what evidence is relevant, how concepts should be understood, and what conclusions can reasonably be drawn. Those decisions are informed by existing knowledge, methodological traditions, assumptions, and prior scholarship.

That does not mean every project must be organized around a named formal theory.

Consider a study documenting the prevalence of a newly observed practice in a particular population. If its purpose is primarily descriptive, forcing an explanatory theory onto the study may add little. The researchers still need clear definitions, a rationale for what is measured, defensible sampling and measurement decisions, and engagement with relevant literature. Those elements provide intellectual and methodological grounding even if the article does not claim to test or apply a formal theory.

This is why a study can potentially be rigorous without naming a formal theory. The absence of a named theory and the absence of intellectual grounding are not the same condition.

Some studies have a strong reason to use an explicit theoretical framework

An explicit theoretical framework becomes particularly useful when the study is concerned with explanation rather than description alone. If you want to understand why people behave in a certain way, how particular mechanisms operate, why variables may be related, or how an established explanation performs in a new context, theory can provide a structured basis for deciding what to examine.

A theory may influence the formulation of research questions, selection or operationalization of constructs, hypotheses, data collection, analytical categories, interpretation of findings, and comparison of results with existing explanations. The relevant issue is therefore what the theory actually contributes to the study, not whether its name appears prominently in a chapter.

A theoretical framework is especially defensible when the research purpose explicitly involves testing, applying, extending, refining, or challenging theoretical explanations. In those situations, removing the theory could substantially change the logic of the study.

A conceptual framework may be more appropriate when no single theory organizes the problem

Research problems often draw on several bodies of literature without being adequately represented by one established theory. In such cases, a conceptual framework can make the researcher's reasoning explicit by identifying the concepts considered relevant and showing how they are expected to relate within the study.

For example, a study of university students' continued use of generative AI might be informed by previous research on perceived usefulness, assessment practices, AI literacy, institutional rules, and student confidence. If the researchers are not claiming that one established theory explains these elements, presenting them as though they all belong to a single theory would be misleading. A researcher-developed conceptual framework may more accurately represent the intellectual architecture of the study.

That framework should still be defensible. Concepts should come from relevant literature, empirical evidence, methodological reasoning, or clearly stated assumptions rather than being assembled because they look plausible in a diagram.

Qualitative research requires particular care

Qualitative research illustrates why universal rules about frameworks are difficult to defend. Theory can be extremely useful in qualitative inquiry. It may sensitize researchers to particular aspects of a phenomenon, shape interview questions, guide coding, support interpretation, or provide a language for explaining patterns in the data.

Yet the relationship between theory and qualitative inquiry varies considerably across methodologies. Published methodological discussions note both the value of theoretical frameworks and the danger of allowing a predetermined framework to suppress unexpected findings. In strongly inductive work, beginning with a highly prescriptive theoretical structure may direct attention toward what the theory says should exist rather than what participants and data actually reveal.

Consequently, asking simply whether qualitative research needs a theoretical framework misses an important methodological question: when, where, and for what purpose should theory enter the inquiry?

Exploratory research does not automatically mean theory-free research

“Exploratory” and “theory-driven” are not necessarily opposites. Researchers may use theoretical concepts as sensitizing ideas while remaining open to patterns that the framework does not anticipate. Alternatively, theory may become more important later, when researchers interpret findings or relate emerging explanations to existing scholarship.

The crucial issue is consistency. If a study claims to be highly inductive but constructs every interview question and analytical code directly from a predetermined theory, the methodological claim deserves scrutiny. Conversely, calling exploratory work “atheoretical” simply because it does not begin by testing a theory may overlook the assumptions and concepts already influencing the inquiry.

The relationship between exploratory research and theory can therefore range from deliberately open-ended inquiry to theoretically sensitized exploration.

Descriptive studies may have less need for explanatory theory

A purely descriptive question asks what exists, how frequently something occurs, how something is distributed, or what characteristics a population or phenomenon has. Such a question does not necessarily require a theory explaining why the observed pattern occurs.

Suppose researchers ask, “What proportion of faculty members used generative AI for assessment-related tasks during the previous academic year?” A carefully designed survey could answer that question without invoking a behavioral adoption theory. Adding one would not automatically improve the measurement of prevalence.

If the question becomes “What factors explain faculty adoption of generative AI for assessment?”, however, an explanatory framework may become considerably more useful. The shift from describing a phenomenon to explaining relationships changes what the study needs conceptually.

Whether descriptive research needs a theoretical framework should therefore be judged from what the study is trying to accomplish, rather than from the design label alone.

Methodology can already contain theoretical commitments

Some research methodologies are themselves built on particular epistemological, ontological, or theoretical assumptions. Grounded theory is an obvious example of why simply asking researchers to select an external theory before beginning may be problematic. Different traditions of grounded theory handle prior theory and literature differently, but the methodology is specifically concerned with developing theoretical understanding from systematic engagement with data.

Phenomenological, ethnographic, critical, constructivist, realist, and other traditions can likewise carry assumptions about knowledge, experience, society, interpretation, or causation. These assumptions should not casually be treated as interchangeable with a study's theoretical framework, but they demonstrate why research is rarely intellectually neutral simply because no standalone “theory” section appears in a report.

Institutional requirements and methodological necessity are different questions

Your university may require every thesis or dissertation to contain a section called “Theoretical Framework,” “Conceptual Framework,” or “Theoretical and Conceptual Framework.” A journal may also expect explicit theoretical positioning in a particular field.

If so, that requirement matters. A thesis must satisfy the regulations under which it will be examined, and a manuscript must communicate effectively within the conventions of its scholarly community.

But an institutional template is evidence of a reporting requirement, not proof of a universal methodological law.

Watch Out

Do not confuse “my university requires a framework” with “all research universally requires this type of framework.” Follow applicable institutional requirements, but choose and explain the framework in a way that remains methodologically coherent with the study.

A useful test is whether removing the framework would change the study

Imagine deleting the framework from your proposal. Would your research questions change? Would you select different constructs, participants, measures, interview questions, observations, analytical categories, or interpretations?

If the answer is yes, the framework is probably doing substantive intellectual work.

If absolutely nothing would change, the framework may have been added after the research design was already complete. That does not necessarily make it useless, but it should prompt you to reconsider whether the framework genuinely guides the study or merely decorates it.

A framework earns its place by helping the researcher think, design, analyze, or explain more coherently. Its value does not come from occupying several pages between the literature review and methodology.

04 · A Practical Example

How the Same Topic Can Require Different Framework Decisions

Hypothetical Example

Three studies of university students' use of generative AI

Imagine three research teams investigating the same broad phenomenon: university students' use of generative AI. Their topics sound similar, but their research purposes differ substantially.

Study A: Describe The researchers ask how frequently students use generative AI for different academic activities. Their principal purpose is to estimate and characterize patterns of use. They need defensible definitions and measurement decisions, but an explanatory theory may not be necessary merely to report those patterns.
Study B: Explain The researchers ask why students intend to continue using generative AI for learning. They select an established theory containing constructs relevant to behavioral intention and use those constructs to formulate hypotheses and select measures. Here, a theoretical framework performs substantial explanatory and design work.
Study C: Explore The researchers conduct open-ended interviews to understand how students themselves make sense of appropriate and inappropriate AI assistance. They deliberately avoid imposing a detailed explanatory model at the outset because they want participants' distinctions and reasoning to emerge. Existing theory may later become useful in interpreting the findings.

None of these decisions follows simply from the topic “generative AI.” The appropriate role of a framework changes with the research purpose, question, methodology, and intended contribution.

The lesson is straightforward: do not begin with “Which theory can I attach to my topic?” Begin by asking what you are trying to understand and what intellectual structure will help you investigate it coherently.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Deciding Whether a Study Needs a Framework

Misconception

Every study must have a named theory

A study needs defensible intellectual grounding, but that is not equivalent to requiring a named formal theory in every research design. The necessity and role of theory vary with the research purpose, methodology, discipline, and reporting context.

Misconception

If there is no theory, you can simply call the diagram a conceptual framework

A conceptual framework is not a fallback label for an unsupported collection of boxes and arrows. Its concepts and proposed relationships should have a defensible basis in scholarship, evidence, assumptions, or reasoned synthesis. Drawing variables into a flowchart does not by itself create a meaningful conceptual framework.

Misconception

Adding a famous theory automatically makes the study stronger

A prestigious or frequently cited theory can still be poorly suited to a particular research problem. If the theory does not help determine what is examined or how findings are understood, its presence can create conceptual inconsistency. The better question is whether the theory fits the phenomenon and research purpose.

Misconception

The framework only needs to appear in the literature review

If a framework genuinely guides the research, its influence should normally be visible beyond the section where it is introduced. Depending on the study, it may shape questions, hypotheses, constructs, instruments, interview prompts, coding, interpretation, or discussion. A framework that disappears immediately after being described is difficult to characterize as genuinely guiding the study.

Misconception

Using a framework is always better than not using one

Frameworks focus attention, which is precisely why they can be useful. The same focusing effect can also become a limitation. In an inductive study, rigid adherence to a predetermined framework may encourage researchers to privilege expected concepts and overlook findings that do not fit. The framework should serve the inquiry rather than discipline the data into obedience.

Misconception

If your supervisor requires a framework, the methodological debate no longer matters

You should follow legitimate institutional requirements, but you still need to make the framework intellectually defensible. A required section does not justify selecting an arbitrary theory. If an explicit framework must be presented, explain one that accurately represents the conceptual or theoretical grounding of the research.

Decide From the Research Problem Outward, Not From the Theory Inward

If you are planning a study, resist the temptation to search for a theory simply because you think research is supposed to have one. First clarify the problem, research purpose, questions, methodological orientation, and type of contribution you intend to make. Then determine what conceptual or theoretical structure would help you accomplish that purpose.

A simple decision framework

If your study explicitly tests, applies, extends, or challenges an established explanation
An explicit theoretical framework will usually be central to the study.
If several concepts from the literature need to be organized but no single established theory adequately represents the problem
A researcher-constructed conceptual framework may be more appropriate.
If your study is primarily descriptive
Ask whether a framework contributes anything beyond clear definitions, relevant literature, and sound methodological reasoning. Do not add explanatory theory automatically.
If your methodology emphasizes inductive discovery
Consider whether introducing a detailed framework early would support the inquiry or prematurely constrain it. Theory may enter at another stage.
If your institution, supervisor, funder, or target journal explicitly requires a framework
Meet the requirement, but select and present a framework that remains coherent with your research question and methodology.

If you determine that an established theory is appropriate, the next task is not to choose the most famous one. You need to select a theory without forcing it to fit the problem. A theory should clarify the inquiry, not require you to rewrite the inquiry merely to accommodate the theory.

You should also be able to state the framework's job in one or two sentences. For example: “The framework identifies the constructs examined in the study and specifies the relationships to be tested,” or “The framework provides sensitizing concepts for interpreting participants' accounts while allowing additional themes to emerge.”

If you cannot explain what the framework changes, directs, or clarifies, reconsider why it is there.

Before Deciding That Your Study Needs a Framework

Before selecting or omitting a framework, check:
State whether your research purpose is primarily descriptive, explanatory, exploratory, interpretive, predictive, evaluative, theory-testing, or theory-building.
Check whether your methodology carries assumptions about how theory should enter the research process.
Determine whether an established theory genuinely explains or organizes the phenomenon you are investigating.
Consider whether a conceptual framework would represent your study more accurately than claiming allegiance to a single theory.
Identify exactly how the proposed framework would influence your questions, constructs, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or discussion.
Ask whether the framework could constrain important observations or emergent findings that your methodology is intended to discover.
Verify your university, program, ethics review, funder, or target journal requirements rather than assuming that conventions are universal.
Make sure every concept and proposed relationship in a researcher-developed framework has a defensible basis.
Imagine removing the framework and ask what would actually change in the study. If the answer is “nothing,” reconsider its function.

Questions Researchers Ask About Whether Frameworks Are Required

Can I conduct research without a theoretical framework?

Potentially, yes. Some studies do not organize the inquiry around a formal theoretical framework. They still require a clear research rationale, engagement with relevant scholarship, coherent concepts, defensible methods, and an explanation of how the study is intellectually grounded. Institutional or disciplinary requirements may nevertheless require an explicit framework.

If I do not have a theoretical framework, do I need a conceptual framework?

Not automatically. A conceptual framework is useful when explicitly organizing relevant concepts, evidence, assumptions, and relationships improves the coherence of the study. It should not be created merely as a substitute label because no formal theory was selected.

Does quantitative research always need a theoretical framework?

No universal rule makes a formal theoretical framework mandatory for every quantitative study. Theory is particularly valuable when hypotheses, constructs, or proposed relationships are derived from an explanatory account. A primarily descriptive quantitative study may have a different need for theory, although it still requires conceptual clarity and scholarly grounding.

Does qualitative research always need a theoretical framework?

No single answer applies to all qualitative methodologies. Theory can guide qualitative research at several stages, but some approaches emphasize inductive development and may avoid imposing a detailed predetermined framework. Researchers should explain when and how theory enters the inquiry and ensure that this is consistent with their methodology.

Can I develop a conceptual framework from the literature instead of using one theory?

Yes, when that approach accurately represents the logic of the study. A conceptual framework may synthesize relevant concepts and relationships drawn from prior research and other defensible sources. The researcher should explain why those elements were selected and how they inform the study rather than presenting the resulting diagram as self-evident.

What if my university requires both a theoretical and conceptual framework?

Follow the applicable institutional requirements, but clarify how your program defines the two terms because terminology varies. Ideally, the theoretical framework should identify how existing theory informs the study, while the conceptual framework should represent the specific conceptual structure of your research. Avoid manufacturing an artificial distinction merely to populate two required headings.

Can I choose a framework after I have already written my research questions?

Sometimes, but the relationship is not always linear. Questions may lead researchers toward an appropriate theory, while engagement with theory can also refine the questions themselves. What matters is eventual coherence between the research problem, questions, framework, and methodology. The question of when theory should enter research-question development therefore depends partly on what role theory is intended to perform.

How do I know whether I am forcing a theory into my study?

A warning sign is that the research problem, questions, variables, or interpretation must be distorted simply to match the theory. Another is that the framework has no meaningful effect on the study after it is introduced. A good fit should be defensible in terms of the phenomenon, purpose, assumptions, and analytical needs of the research.

The Bottom Line

Not every research study needs a formally named theoretical or conceptual framework in the same way, but every study does need a coherent and defensible intellectual foundation.

Use an explicit framework when it genuinely helps define, organize, explain, investigate, or interpret the research problem, and respect methodological and institutional requirements that apply to your work. Do not select a theory simply to fill a required section: the strongest framework is one whose contribution can actually be seen in the logic of the study.
