Does Every Study Really Need a Framework?
You may have been told that every research study must have a theoretical framework, a conceptual framework, or perhaps both. In some universities, the requirement is so familiar that choosing a framework can become an almost automatic step in proposal writing: identify a topic, formulate the research questions, find a theory, and draw a diagram.
But research methodology is not quite that mechanical.
Different research traditions use theory and conceptual frameworks differently. Some studies are explicitly designed to test, apply, extend, or challenge an established theory. Others use a researcher-constructed conceptual framework to organize relevant concepts and anticipated relationships. Still others, particularly certain inductive or exploratory approaches, may deliberately avoid imposing a detailed framework at the beginning because doing so could constrain what emerges from the data.
The useful question, therefore, is not simply whether every study must contain a section labeled “Theoretical Framework” or “Conceptual Framework.” The more important question is what intellectual structure the study actually needs and what role that structure should play in the research.

The Real Issue Is What Intellectual Work the Framework Performs
A framework is not just a required diagram or chapter heading
One reason this question causes confusion is that “framework” can refer to several different things. A theoretical framework generally involves applying an existing theory, or theoretically grounded set of ideas, to a particular research problem. A conceptual framework is more commonly constructed by the researcher to organize the concepts, assumptions, literature, and relationships relevant to the particular study.
The distinction is not perfectly standardized across disciplines. Authors sometimes use the terms differently or even interchangeably. What matters more than the label is whether you can explain where the framework came from and what it actually does in the study. If you are uncertain about the distinction, understanding how theoretical and conceptual frameworks differ should come before deciding whether your study needs either one.
Theoretical framework
Typically applies an existing theory or theoretical perspective to help explain, interpret, predict, or investigate the phenomenon being studied.
Conceptual framework
Typically organizes the concepts, assumptions, evidence, and proposed relationships that the researcher considers important for understanding the particular study.
Neither should exist merely as an ornament in the literature review. If a framework is claimed to guide a study, readers should usually be able to see its influence somewhere in the research questions, variables or concepts, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or discussion.
Every study needs grounding, but grounding is not identical to naming a formal theory
A study cannot be intellectually unanchored. Researchers make decisions about what counts as a problem, which questions deserve investigation, what evidence is relevant, how concepts should be understood, and what conclusions can reasonably be drawn. Those decisions are informed by existing knowledge, methodological traditions, assumptions, and prior scholarship.
That does not mean every project must be organized around a named formal theory.
Consider a study documenting the prevalence of a newly observed practice in a particular population. If its purpose is primarily descriptive, forcing an explanatory theory onto the study may add little. The researchers still need clear definitions, a rationale for what is measured, defensible sampling and measurement decisions, and engagement with relevant literature. Those elements provide intellectual and methodological grounding even if the article does not claim to test or apply a formal theory.
This is why a study can potentially be rigorous without naming a formal theory. The absence of a named theory and the absence of intellectual grounding are not the same condition.
Some studies have a strong reason to use an explicit theoretical framework
An explicit theoretical framework becomes particularly useful when the study is concerned with explanation rather than description alone. If you want to understand why people behave in a certain way, how particular mechanisms operate, why variables may be related, or how an established explanation performs in a new context, theory can provide a structured basis for deciding what to examine.
A theory may influence the formulation of research questions, selection or operationalization of constructs, hypotheses, data collection, analytical categories, interpretation of findings, and comparison of results with existing explanations. The relevant issue is therefore what the theory actually contributes to the study, not whether its name appears prominently in a chapter.
A theoretical framework is especially defensible when the research purpose explicitly involves testing, applying, extending, refining, or challenging theoretical explanations. In those situations, removing the theory could substantially change the logic of the study.
A conceptual framework may be more appropriate when no single theory organizes the problem
Research problems often draw on several bodies of literature without being adequately represented by one established theory. In such cases, a conceptual framework can make the researcher's reasoning explicit by identifying the concepts considered relevant and showing how they are expected to relate within the study.
For example, a study of university students' continued use of generative AI might be informed by previous research on perceived usefulness, assessment practices, AI literacy, institutional rules, and student confidence. If the researchers are not claiming that one established theory explains these elements, presenting them as though they all belong to a single theory would be misleading. A researcher-developed conceptual framework may more accurately represent the intellectual architecture of the study.
That framework should still be defensible. Concepts should come from relevant literature, empirical evidence, methodological reasoning, or clearly stated assumptions rather than being assembled because they look plausible in a diagram.
Qualitative research requires particular care
Qualitative research illustrates why universal rules about frameworks are difficult to defend. Theory can be extremely useful in qualitative inquiry. It may sensitize researchers to particular aspects of a phenomenon, shape interview questions, guide coding, support interpretation, or provide a language for explaining patterns in the data.
Yet the relationship between theory and qualitative inquiry varies considerably across methodologies. Published methodological discussions note both the value of theoretical frameworks and the danger of allowing a predetermined framework to suppress unexpected findings. In strongly inductive work, beginning with a highly prescriptive theoretical structure may direct attention toward what the theory says should exist rather than what participants and data actually reveal.
Consequently, asking simply whether qualitative research needs a theoretical framework misses an important methodological question: when, where, and for what purpose should theory enter the inquiry?
Exploratory research does not automatically mean theory-free research
“Exploratory” and “theory-driven” are not necessarily opposites. Researchers may use theoretical concepts as sensitizing ideas while remaining open to patterns that the framework does not anticipate. Alternatively, theory may become more important later, when researchers interpret findings or relate emerging explanations to existing scholarship.
The crucial issue is consistency. If a study claims to be highly inductive but constructs every interview question and analytical code directly from a predetermined theory, the methodological claim deserves scrutiny. Conversely, calling exploratory work “atheoretical” simply because it does not begin by testing a theory may overlook the assumptions and concepts already influencing the inquiry.
The relationship between exploratory research and theory can therefore range from deliberately open-ended inquiry to theoretically sensitized exploration.
Descriptive studies may have less need for explanatory theory
A purely descriptive question asks what exists, how frequently something occurs, how something is distributed, or what characteristics a population or phenomenon has. Such a question does not necessarily require a theory explaining why the observed pattern occurs.
Suppose researchers ask, “What proportion of faculty members used generative AI for assessment-related tasks during the previous academic year?” A carefully designed survey could answer that question without invoking a behavioral adoption theory. Adding one would not automatically improve the measurement of prevalence.
If the question becomes “What factors explain faculty adoption of generative AI for assessment?”, however, an explanatory framework may become considerably more useful. The shift from describing a phenomenon to explaining relationships changes what the study needs conceptually.
Whether descriptive research needs a theoretical framework should therefore be judged from what the study is trying to accomplish, rather than from the design label alone.
Methodology can already contain theoretical commitments
Some research methodologies are themselves built on particular epistemological, ontological, or theoretical assumptions. Grounded theory is an obvious example of why simply asking researchers to select an external theory before beginning may be problematic. Different traditions of grounded theory handle prior theory and literature differently, but the methodology is specifically concerned with developing theoretical understanding from systematic engagement with data.
Phenomenological, ethnographic, critical, constructivist, realist, and other traditions can likewise carry assumptions about knowledge, experience, society, interpretation, or causation. These assumptions should not casually be treated as interchangeable with a study's theoretical framework, but they demonstrate why research is rarely intellectually neutral simply because no standalone “theory” section appears in a report.
Institutional requirements and methodological necessity are different questions
Your university may require every thesis or dissertation to contain a section called “Theoretical Framework,” “Conceptual Framework,” or “Theoretical and Conceptual Framework.” A journal may also expect explicit theoretical positioning in a particular field.
If so, that requirement matters. A thesis must satisfy the regulations under which it will be examined, and a manuscript must communicate effectively within the conventions of its scholarly community.
But an institutional template is evidence of a reporting requirement, not proof of a universal methodological law.
Watch Out
Do not confuse “my university requires a framework” with “all research universally requires this type of framework.” Follow applicable institutional requirements, but choose and explain the framework in a way that remains methodologically coherent with the study.
A useful test is whether removing the framework would change the study
Imagine deleting the framework from your proposal. Would your research questions change? Would you select different constructs, participants, measures, interview questions, observations, analytical categories, or interpretations?
If the answer is yes, the framework is probably doing substantive intellectual work.
If absolutely nothing would change, the framework may have been added after the research design was already complete. That does not necessarily make it useless, but it should prompt you to reconsider whether the framework genuinely guides the study or merely decorates it.
A framework earns its place by helping the researcher think, design, analyze, or explain more coherently. Its value does not come from occupying several pages between the literature review and methodology.
