How Much of a Theory Do You Actually Need to Use?

You do not automatically need to use every construct or proposition in a theory. Use the parts required by your research question, but explain what you selected, what you omitted, and why a partial application still preserves the theoretical logic relevant to the study.

01 · The Question

If You Choose a Theory, Do You Have to Use All of It?

You find a theory that fits your research problem well, but the theory contains eight constructs, several propositions, multiple pathways, and perhaps more than one version developed over time.

Your research question concerns only three of those constructs.

Do you need to include everything?

Researchers sometimes assume that choosing a theory creates an all-or-nothing obligation: either reproduce the entire theory or risk using it incorrectly. The opposite mistake is equally common. Researchers extract one convenient construct, cite the theory's name, and describe the study as though it represents the complete theoretical explanation.

Neither extreme is particularly useful. A theoretical framework should be proportionate to the research question, but selective use requires enough understanding and transparency to avoid misrepresenting the theory.

02 · The Short Answer

Use What the Research Question Needs, but Preserve the Relevant Logic

In Brief

You do not necessarily need to use every construct, proposition, or component of an established theory; using a theoretically coherent subset can be defensible when those elements are the ones required by your research question and design.

Selective use becomes problematic when omitted elements are necessary for the theoretical explanation you claim to examine, when constructs are removed from relationships that give them meaning, or when a partial application is presented as a test of the entire theory. State clearly which theoretical elements you use, what you omit, and why.

03 · What You Need to Know

A Theoretical Framework Is Usually More Focused Than the Theory It Draws From

The theory and your study's theoretical framework are not identical

An established theory exists independently of your particular research project. It may be designed to explain a broad phenomenon across many contexts and contain more concepts and propositions than one study could reasonably investigate.

Your theoretical framework is the way relevant theoretical ideas are translated into the specific inquiry you are conducting.

Recent methodological guidance describes constructing a theoretical framework as applying a theory's foundational elements and structure to the phenomenon being studied. Because theories are abstract and intended to travel across contexts, researchers necessarily make decisions about how theoretical concepts and propositions relate to the specific phenomenon under investigation.

This is why theory and theoretical framework should not simply be treated as interchangeable labels.

Start with the research question, not with the number of constructs

There is no methodological rule stating that a valid application requires 100 percent of a theory's components.

The appropriate amount depends on what the research question asks.

If a theory contains constructs concerning beliefs, intentions, behavior, contextual constraints, prior experience, and social influences, but your question concerns only the mechanism connecting beliefs with intention, including every construct may make the study unnecessarily broad.

The better question is: which theoretical components are necessary to answer the research question without distorting the explanation?

This also means theory selection and question development should remain connected. Researchers should not expand the research question merely because the chosen theory contains more constructs than the study originally needed.

Using a subset can be theoretically legitimate

Researchers routinely focus on particular propositions, mechanisms, or constructs within broader theories.

A study might examine one pathway because previous evidence concerning that pathway is inconsistent. Another might focus on one theoretical mechanism in a population where its operation is uncertain. A qualitative study might use selected theoretical concepts as sensitizing resources without attempting to operationalize the complete theory.

Selective use can therefore produce a more focused study.

The key is to identify the selected theoretical elements accurately and explain why those elements form a coherent basis for the inquiry.

But constructs cannot always be separated cleanly from the rest of the theory

Theoretical constructs acquire meaning partly through their relationships with other concepts and assumptions.

Suppose a theory defines intention as the immediate precursor of behavior while also specifying conditions under which intention is expected to translate into action. Studying the intention-behavior relationship while ignoring those conditions could produce a misleading representation of the theoretical proposition.

Similarly, a construct that looks independent in a diagram may depend conceptually on assumptions established elsewhere in the theory.

Before omitting components, determine whether they are peripheral to the particular question or logically necessary to the theoretical relationship you intend to examine.

Using one construct is not necessarily using the theory

This is an important boundary.

Imagine that an established theory contains a construct called self-efficacy. You measure self-efficacy because it is relevant to your research, but none of the theory's propositions, mechanisms, or relationships informs the study.

Are you using the theory?

Perhaps only in a very limited sense. You may simply be using a construct that has a theoretical history.

A theory is more than a vocabulary list. If the study borrows one concept while ignoring the explanatory structure in which that concept operates, describing the entire study as “based on” the theory may overstate the relationship.

Using a theoretical construct A concept developed or elaborated within a theory is used in the study.
Using a theory The theory's explanatory relationships, propositions, assumptions, or interpretive structure materially influence the study.

A partial application is not a complete theory test

Suppose a theory contains five major propositions and your study examines one.

You can provide evidence relevant to that proposition. You cannot reasonably claim that the study has comprehensively validated or falsified the entire theory.

The distinction is particularly important in quantitative research, where researchers sometimes estimate a reduced model and then describe the results as a “test of Theory X.”

A more precise description would identify the theoretical relationship or subset of propositions being examined.

Understanding the difference between testing and applying theory helps keep the claim proportional to what the study actually investigates.

Leaving something out is different from arguing that it should be removed from the theory

Your study may omit a construct because it is irrelevant to the research question, impossible to examine with the chosen design, or outside the scope of the project.

That does not mean you are proposing that the theory itself should no longer contain that construct.

The distinction is straightforward but consequential:

Study-level omission This project does not investigate a particular component of the theory.
Theoretical modification The researcher argues that the theory itself should be changed by removing, adding, redefining, or restructuring theoretical elements.

If you believe an element should actually be removed or changed, you are moving toward modifying or extending the theory, which requires a stronger theoretical argument.

The reason for omission matters

Not all justifications are equally persuasive.

“This construct is outside the research question” may be reasonable.

“This relationship has already been well established and our study focuses on a disputed mechanism” may also be defensible.

“The questionnaire would become too long” is a practical constraint, but it does not by itself establish theoretical coherence. If the omitted construct is necessary to interpret the relationships you retain, convenience may weaken the theoretical test.

“The variable was unavailable in the dataset” is similarly a design limitation rather than a theoretical justification.

Researchers should distinguish decisions made for conceptual reasons from those imposed by practical constraints.

Do not choose theoretical components after seeing which ones work

Selective theory use becomes especially problematic when selection occurs after examining the results.

Suppose you measure six theoretically specified constructs but report only the three that produce statistically significant relationships, presenting those as the theoretical framework.

That is not the same as defining a focused theoretical model in advance.

When confirmatory claims are being made, researchers should distinguish theoretically justified prior selection from post hoc model modification. Preregistration can be useful when appropriate because it makes the intended theoretical test and analytical decisions visible before results are known.

Qualitative studies can also use selected parts of theory

Selective use is not limited to variable-based research.

A qualitative researcher may use several concepts from a broader theory as sensitizing ideas. Those concepts might inform interview prompts or interpretation while other portions of the theory are not relevant to the phenomenon.

Recent guidance on theory in qualitative research emphasizes that theoretical frameworks translate abstract theory into the specific context of a study and should remain responsive to what researchers encounter empirically.

In such work, the researcher should explain why selected concepts are useful without implying that the complete theoretical architecture controls the analysis.

The theory may be too broad for the study

Some theories operate at a level of abstraction far beyond what one research project can examine.

A broad social theory may address relationships among institutions, culture, identity, power, and historical change. A doctoral study investigating one particular educational practice may need only a carefully justified portion of that theoretical perspective.

Trying to operationalize the entire theory could make the research question incoherent or methodologically impossible.

The challenge is finding the right theoretical resolution. If the framework includes far more than the study can meaningfully investigate, the theory may be too broad for the particular research problem.

A theory can also become too narrow after excessive trimming

Selective use has a limit.

If you remove enough constructs, mechanisms, assumptions, and relationships, the remaining fragment may no longer represent the explanation that made the theory useful in the first place.

Imagine taking a theory concerned with a sequence from beliefs to intentions to behavior and retaining only one belief construct and behavior. The resulting two-variable model may no longer capture the mechanism the theory proposes.

At that point, citing the original theory as the framework may create more confusion than clarity.

You may instead need a narrower theory, a conceptual framework, or a more modest claim that the study draws on selected theoretical concepts.

The original source should determine what counts as central

Do not decide which parts of a theory are essential based solely on diagrams reproduced in secondary articles.

Return to foundational publications and major revisions. Determine how the theory defines its constructs, which propositions are central, which conditions qualify them, and whether the theory has changed over time.

A component that looks optional in a simplified textbook diagram may be central to the original explanation.

Conversely, a variable frequently included in empirical adaptations may not belong to the original theory at all.

Watch Out

Do not call a reduced empirical model “the theory” unless it actually represents the theory's relevant explanatory structure. Distinguish the established theory from the subset, adaptation, or study-specific framework you are using.

You should be able to justify every inclusion and important omission

A useful framework is neither the largest possible version of the theory nor the smallest version capable of fitting on one page.

Each included theoretical element should have a reason to be there. Important omitted elements should also have an explanation when their absence could affect how readers understand the theoretical claim.

This is the principle of theoretical proportionality: use enough theory to support the intellectual work the study claims to perform, but not so much that the framework overwhelms the research question.

04 · A Practical Example

Using Only the Part of a Theory Your Question Requires

Hypothetical Example

Studying whether intention translates into actual AI use

An established behavioral theory contains several constructs concerning beliefs, social influences, perceived capability, intention, and behavior. A researcher is specifically interested in why strong intentions to use generative AI do not always translate into actual classroom use.

Define the theoretical question The study focuses on the theoretically proposed relationship between intention and behavior and the conditions that may affect that transition.
Identify necessary components Intention and behavior are clearly necessary. Any theoretical construct directly defining the conditions under which intention becomes behavior must also be considered before reducing the framework.
Omit peripheral pathways Other constructs explaining how intention originally develops may fall outside the research question if the study is not attempting to explain variation in intention itself.
State the scope accurately The researchers describe the study as examining a specific theoretically derived relationship rather than as a comprehensive test of the entire theory.
Interpret within that boundary Findings are used to discuss the focal proposition and its conditions, not to declare that the complete theory has been validated or rejected.

The framework is smaller than the full theory, but the reduction follows the research question rather than convenience or statistical results.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Using Only Part of a Theory

Misconception

If you choose a theory, you must include every construct

Not necessarily. A focused study can examine a theoretically coherent subset when the research question concerns only part of the broader explanation. The selection should be justified rather than arbitrary.

Misconception

You can remove any construct that is inconvenient to measure

Practical limitations do not automatically make a construct theoretically unnecessary. If an omitted component is required to interpret the relationships you retain, the reduced model may no longer provide a credible test of the theoretical claim.

Misconception

Using one construct means the whole study is based on the theory

A construct can have theoretical origins without the complete theory guiding the research. Describe the relationship accurately, particularly when none of the theory's propositions or mechanisms is being used.

Misconception

A partial model can validate the entire theory

Evidence concerning selected propositions cannot automatically establish the validity of theoretical components that were not examined. Keep conclusions at the level of the relationships and assumptions actually investigated.

Misconception

Removing a construct from your study means you modified the theory

Omitting something from one research design is not the same as arguing that the established theory should be revised. Theory modification requires a theoretical claim about how the explanation itself should change.

Misconception

The smallest possible framework is always more parsimonious

Parsimony does not mean stripping away theoretically necessary components. A simpler model is useful only when it preserves enough explanatory structure to address the research question coherently.

06 · What This Means for You

Build the Framework Around the Theoretical Claim You Actually Need

A simple decision framework

If your question concerns the complete explanatory process proposed by the theory
A broad representation of the theory may be necessary, subject to what the research design can actually examine.
If your question concerns one proposition, mechanism, or pathway
Use the theoretical components required to represent that focal explanation and its relevant conditions.
If an omitted construct is logically necessary for the relationship you retain
Include it, narrow the theoretical claim, or explain why the resulting limitation can be tolerated.
If you use only one isolated construct from a much broader theory
Consider saying that the study draws on that theoretical construct rather than claiming that the entire theory serves as the framework.
If the theory remains overwhelmingly broad even after defensible selection
Consider whether another theory or conceptual framework fits the research question more precisely.

Before finalizing the framework, make two lists: “theory components relevant to the research question” and “theory components not examined.” For every omission that could plausibly affect the focal explanation, write one sentence explaining why it is outside scope.

This exercise makes selective use transparent and often reveals whether you are using a coherent portion of the theory or merely collecting the constructs that are easiest to measure.

Before Using Only Part of a Theory

Check the theoretical scope:
Read the foundational source and major revisions before deciding which theoretical components are central or optional.
Identify the exact proposition, mechanism, relationship, or interpretive function the theory contributes to your study.
Include all theoretical elements necessary to represent that focal explanation coherently.
Explain why major omitted constructs or propositions fall outside the research question or design.
Distinguish theoretical reasons for omission from practical limitations such as questionnaire length or unavailable variables.
Do not select the final theoretical components based only on which relationships become statistically significant.
Distinguish using a theoretical construct from applying the broader theory.
Describe a partial theory test as partial rather than generalizing conclusions to components that were not examined.
Make clear whether you are merely omitting components from the study or proposing an actual modification of the theory.

Questions About Using Part of a Theory

Do I have to use every construct in a theory?

No. You can focus on a theoretically coherent subset when the research question concerns only part of the theory. Explain what you selected, why those elements are sufficient for the focal question, and which parts of the theory remain outside the study.

Can I remove variables from an established theoretical model?

You can omit constructs from your study when justified, but distinguish a reduced study-specific model from a claim that the established theory itself should be changed. If the omitted variables are necessary to the theoretical proposition you intend to test, their absence may weaken the interpretation.

Can I use just one construct from a theory?

Yes, but describe the relationship accurately. If you borrow only one construct and none of the broader theory's explanatory relationships informs the research, it may be more precise to say that the study draws on a construct from the theory rather than that the whole study is based on that theory.

If I use only part of a theory, is it still my theoretical framework?

Potentially. A theoretical framework can apply selected elements of a broader theory to a particular research question. The selected elements should form a coherent structure and their relationship with the original theory should be made explicit.

How do I justify excluding constructs?

Connect the decision to the research question, theoretical scope, level of analysis, population, mechanism being examined, or another defensible conceptual reason. Practical constraints can also be reported, but they should not be disguised as theoretical reasons.

Does using only part of a theory mean I modified it?

No. A study-level decision not to investigate every component does not by itself alter the theory. Modification occurs when you argue that the theoretical explanation itself should be changed.

Can I add constructs from another theory to the subset I use?

Potentially, but the resulting framework needs additional justification. Depending on what you do, you may be using multiple theories, integrating theories, constructing a conceptual framework, or extending the original theory rather than merely applying a subset.

How do I know if I have removed too much of the theory?

Ask whether the remaining elements still represent the theoretical mechanism or proposition you claim to use. If removing a component changes the meaning of the retained constructs or eliminates a necessary explanatory step, the reduced framework may no longer represent the theory adequately.

Use Enough Theory to Preserve the Explanation, Not Every Box in the Diagram

The Bottom Line

You do not need to use every component of a theory when your research question concerns only a coherent part of its explanation, but the elements you retain must be sufficient to represent the theoretical claim accurately.

Let the research question determine theoretical scope, justify consequential omissions, and distinguish a partial application from a comprehensive test or modification of the theory. Selectivity can make a study more focused; selective citation of only the convenient parts can make it theoretically misleading.
