When Should You Leave a Research Gap Unfilled?

Finding a genuine research gap does not create an obligation to fill it. Leaving a gap unresolved can be reasonable when the answer has little value, adequate evidence already exists, feasible studies would remain uninformative, costs or burdens are disproportionate, or more important uncertainties deserve the available resources.

01 · The Question

When Is Not Studying a Research Gap the Better Research Decision?

Research training often teaches you to find a gap and then design a study to fill it. That sequence is useful, but it can quietly create the impression that every defensible gap is an invitation to conduct more research.

It is not.

Some gaps are genuine but inconsequential. Others concern important questions that cannot currently be studied well enough to produce useful evidence. A proposed study may cost far more than the likely value of its answer, repeat what is already known, or consume resources that could address a more consequential uncertainty. Sometimes the apparent gap disappears when the literature is searched more carefully or updated.

Recognizing when not to conduct a study is therefore part of responsible research prioritization, not a failure to find something novel.

02 · The Short Answer

Leave a Gap Unfilled When Research Is Unlikely to Produce Enough Useful Knowledge to Justify It

In Brief

You should consider leaving a research gap unfilled when resolving it has little scientific or practical value, adequate evidence already answers the important question, feasible research would not meaningfully reduce the uncertainty, the costs or burdens are disproportionate to the likely benefit, or higher-priority uncertainties offer a better use of limited research resources.

"Unfilled" does not necessarily mean "never." A gap that is low priority or infeasible today may become important or answerable later as methods, technology, data, costs, stakeholder needs, or surrounding evidence change. The decision should therefore concern whether additional research is justified under current conditions, not whether the question deserves permanent burial.

03 · What You Need to Know

A Real Research Gap Does Not Automatically Create a Research Need

First ask whether the gap actually still exists

Before deciding whether to leave a gap unfilled, make sure you are dealing with a genuine current gap.

A gap described in an older review may have been addressed by subsequent studies. Relevant evidence may exist under different terminology, in another discipline, or in a population you did not initially search. Several studies may also provide an adequate answer even though nobody has conducted the exact study you originally imagined.

This distinction matters because "nobody has done my proposed study" and "important evidence is missing" are not equivalent claims.

If uncertainty is already adequately resolved, the appropriate response is not to leave a gap unfilled. There may no longer be a meaningful gap to fill. Before making the decision, check whether existing or recent research has already addressed it.

Leave it alone when the missing knowledge would change very little

A question can be genuinely unanswered while the answer has negligible consequence.

Suppose you could determine an unknown fact with considerable precision, but no plausible result would materially change theory, methodology, practice, policy, an important decision, or the direction of subsequent research. The information would be new, but its incremental value might be very small.

That does not make curiosity illegitimate. Basic and exploratory research can have value without immediate application. Yet when research requires meaningful funding, participant involvement, institutional capacity, or years of researcher effort, opportunity cost becomes harder to ignore.

If the likely answer would change almost nothing of consequence, the gap generally has a weaker claim to those resources.

Leave it unfilled when the only available study cannot resolve it

An important gap does not make an uninformative study informative.

Perhaps the question requires longitudinal evidence but only a small cross-sectional dataset is available. Perhaps causal inference is central, but the feasible design cannot address major alternative explanations. Perhaps the necessary subgroup is too rare for the available sample to provide a useful estimate.

In these circumstances, conducting the study may increase the number of publications without substantially improving the answer.

Important unanswered question A reliable answer could make a meaningful scientific or practical difference.
Informative feasible study A study that can reduce the important uncertainty enough to improve what can reasonably be concluded or decided.

The first does not guarantee the second. When the only feasible study would provide evidence too weak to move the question forward, waiting for better methods, data, collaboration, infrastructure, or resources may be more defensible.

Leave it unfilled when the cost is disproportionate to the likely information gained

Some questions are answerable, but only through studies requiring substantial funding, infrastructure, time, participant burden, or risk.

High cost alone does not make research unjustifiable. A very expensive study can provide excellent value when it resolves uncertainty affecting consequential decisions. Conversely, even a moderately expensive study can represent poor value if its answer matters little.

The relevant comparison is between what the study requires and what better information could accomplish.

Formal value-of-information methods provide one approach to evaluating whether the expected benefits of reducing uncertainty justify further research in decision contexts where such modeling is appropriate. More generally, research prioritization frameworks recognize that limited funding makes comparison among research needs necessary.

If an extremely expensive study would produce relatively little useful information, leaving the gap unresolved may be reasonable.

Leave it unfilled when the study would be unnecessarily redundant

Replication and confirmation are important parts of science. Redundancy is therefore not simply the existence of previous research.

The relevant question is whether another study would add information that matters.

A replication may test whether an influential finding is reproducible. A larger study may provide needed precision. A study in a different population may test an important boundary condition. A stronger design may address bias in earlier evidence.

But repeating a well-established result using essentially the same design, population, measurements, and inferential limitations may add little. The literature can become larger without becoming substantially more informative.

Concerns about avoidable research waste have therefore included whether new studies are justified by what is already known and whether systematic reviews of existing evidence inform decisions to undertake further research.

Leave it unfilled when the question is artificially novel

Almost any mature literature can be subdivided until an untouched combination appears.

No study has examined Variable A with Variable B among Population C in Location D using Method E during Period F. That statement may be factually correct and still provide almost no reason for conducting the study.

If changing the population, location, variable combination, or method does not address a meaningful limitation or consequential uncertainty, the gap may amount to novelty by construction.

This is precisely the situation to avoid when trying not to invent a research gap merely to justify a study.

Leave it unfilled when the answer is unlikely to arrive in time to be useful

Research value can depend on timing.

AHRQ's work on research-gap prioritization identifies timeliness among possible criteria for setting priorities. In rapidly changing areas, evidence may need to become available within a particular decision window. A five-year study may be methodologically excellent but less useful for a policy decision that must be made next year.

This does not mean long-term research should automatically be abandoned. Some important questions necessarily require years of investigation, and failing to begin them simply pushes the answer further into the future.

The useful question is whether the expected evidence will remain relevant when it becomes available.

Leave it unfilled when another uncertainty deserves the resources more

Research prioritization is comparative.

You may identify two gaps that are both genuine, important, feasible, and ethical to study. Yet your research team, institution, or funder can support only one.

Choosing the higher-priority gap means the other may remain unresolved even though it would have been worthwhile in isolation.

AHRQ's work on prioritizing research gaps emphasizes explicit criteria because limited funding requires choices among many legitimate research needs. Potential impact, foundational importance, underfunded areas, timeliness, and stakeholder perspectives are among the considerations that may enter such decisions.

Thus, "worth studying" does not necessarily mean "worth studying before everything else."

Ethical considerations can override informational value

Some knowledge may be valuable but cannot ethically be obtained through the study that would be required to answer the question.

Research involving humans must satisfy applicable ethical requirements concerning matters such as risk, informed consent, participant selection, and the relationship between burdens and anticipated benefits. An unanswered question does not suspend those obligations.

When the informative study would expose participants to unjustifiable risk or burden and no acceptable alternative exists, the gap may need to remain unresolved.

Sometimes another design can provide indirect or less definitive evidence ethically. In other cases, uncertainty is simply the scientifically honest outcome.

"Leave it unfilled" can mean "not yet"

Research feasibility is not static.

A rare population may later become accessible through international collaboration. New measurement technology may make a previously impossible variable observable. Administrative datasets may become linkable. Costs may fall. Better analytical methods may improve what can be learned from observational evidence.

Stakeholder priorities can change too, as can the consequences attached to an uncertainty.

A decision not to study a gap now should therefore record why. That makes it possible to reconsider the question if the relevant conditions change.

Watch Out

Do not use "low priority" as a convenient label for questions that are merely difficult, unfashionable, or important to groups with little influence over research agendas. Before leaving a gap unresolved, make the criteria explicit and consider whose consequences and priorities are represented in the decision.

04 · A Practical Example

When Not Conducting the Study Is the More Defensible Choice

Hypothetical Example

A novel educational technology question with little expected information value

Suppose a researcher discovers that no published study has compared two slightly different animations used when an online learning platform displays a student's progress.

The apparent gap The exact comparison appears genuinely absent from the literature.
The possible study A large randomized experiment could estimate whether students slightly prefer Animation A or Animation B.
The consequence test Suppose both animations are equally accessible, cost the same, produce equivalent task performance, and have no credible relationship with learning, persistence, or another consequential outcome.
The resource requirement Obtaining a precise estimate would require recruitment, participant time, data collection, analysis, and institutional support that could instead be directed toward unresolved questions about accessibility and learning outcomes.
The decision The researcher leaves the gap unfilled. The reason is not that the gap is imaginary, but that the expected value of resolving it is too small relative to competing uses of the resources.

Now change one assumption. Suppose one animation may trigger substantial accessibility problems for a group of students. The same narrow gap now carries a potentially consequential uncertainty. Leaving it unresolved requires reconsideration.

The example illustrates why the decision should follow from the value and consequences of the missing evidence rather than the mere size of the gap.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes About Leaving Research Questions Unanswered

Misconception

If a Gap Is Real, Doesn't Science Eventually Need to Fill It?

No. The number of possible unanswered questions is effectively much larger than the research capacity available to investigate them. Some gaps can reasonably remain low priority indefinitely unless their scientific or practical significance changes.

Misconception

Is Leaving a Gap Unfilled the Same as Saying It Is Unimportant?

No. An important question may remain unstudied because the necessary research is currently infeasible, unethical, prohibitively costly, methodologically inadequate, or lower priority than another urgent question. Importance of the gap and feasibility of addressing it are separate judgments.

Misconception

If Previous Studies Exist, Is Another Study Automatically Wasteful?

No. Replication, improved precision, stronger methods, new populations, changing conditions, or unresolved inconsistencies can justify additional research. The issue is whether another study adds useful evidence, not whether it is literally the first.

Misconception

If a Study Is Cheap, Why Not Do It Anyway?

Low financial cost lowers one barrier but does not eliminate researcher time, participant burden, publication effort, ethical responsibilities, or opportunity costs. A cheap study can still have negligible informational value.

Misconception

Does Not Studying a Gap Mean We Must Stop Thinking About It?

No. A gap can be documented, monitored, incorporated into a research agenda, or revisited when methods, data, resources, or circumstances improve. Deferring research can be a deliberate decision rather than abandonment of the question.

Misconception

Should Researchers Avoid Questions With No Immediate Practical Application?

No. Basic, theoretical, methodological, descriptive, and exploratory research can have substantial scientific value without immediate application. The issue is whether some credible value justifies the research, not whether every study changes practice tomorrow.

06 · What This Means for You

Give Yourself Permission to Conclude That a Gap Should Not Become Your Study

When evaluating a potential research gap, do not assume that the process must end with a research proposal. "Do not study this now" is a legitimate outcome of careful appraisal.

The strongest decision usually follows from evaluating the gap, the consequences of uncertainty, and the feasible research together.

A simple decision framework

If adequate current evidence already answers the important question
Do not manufacture a narrower gap merely to preserve the planned study.
If the gap is genuine but resolving it would change little of scientific or practical consequence
Give it lower priority unless another credible form of value justifies the research.
If the gap is important but the only feasible study would leave the central uncertainty essentially unchanged
Wait, redesign, collaborate, develop better methods, or address a worthwhile narrower question instead.
If the informative study would require disproportionate resources, burden, or risk
Look for more efficient approaches and compare the project with alternative uses of those resources.
If the question is worthwhile but another gap has substantially greater priority
Document the lower-priority gap and leave it available for future research rather than treating every worthwhile question as immediately actionable.
If circumstances could plausibly change the decision later
Record what would need to change, such as new methods, data access, funding, stakeholder need, or a different evidence base, before reconsidering the gap.

This approach completes the distinction between finding a research gap and deciding that it is worth filling. The goal is not to maximize the number of gaps closed. It is to direct research toward uncertainties where better evidence can make a worthwhile difference.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Deciding to Leave a Research Gap Unfilled, Check This

Before deciding not to pursue the gap, check:
Verify that the gap genuinely remains after searching current and relevant evidence.
Ask what meaningful scientific, practical, methodological, or informational consequence would follow from obtaining the answer.
Determine whether different plausible findings would actually change an important conclusion or decision.
Assess whether a feasible study could reduce the important uncertainty enough to be informative.
Compare the expected value of better information with financial cost, participant burden, time, risk, and opportunity cost.
Check whether a less costly design, existing dataset, evidence synthesis, collaboration, or narrower question could address the need credibly.
Compare the gap with other important uncertainties competing for the same research resources.
Consider whose priorities and consequences are represented before labeling the gap low priority.
If you defer the question, record what future change would justify reconsidering it.

Questions About Research Gaps That Should Remain Unfilled

Does every research gap eventually need to be filled?

No. Some gaps have little scientific or practical value, some cannot be investigated informatively or ethically, and others remain lower priority than competing uncertainties. The existence of missing knowledge does not create an obligation to produce it.

How do I know when further research is unnecessary?

Consider whether adequate evidence already answers the important question and whether additional evidence is likely to change a meaningful conclusion or decision. Further research may have low value when another study would add little relevant information, although replication or stronger evidence can still be warranted when important uncertainty remains.

Can an important research gap reasonably remain unfilled?

Yes. The gap may require a study that is currently infeasible, unethical, excessively costly, or incapable of producing sufficiently informative evidence. The appropriate decision may be to preserve the question for later rather than answer it badly now.

Is it research waste to study something that has already been studied?

Not automatically. Replication, better precision, improved methods, changing contexts, new populations, or unresolved disagreement can make additional research valuable. Redundancy becomes more concerning when a new study fails to address any meaningful remaining uncertainty or ignores an adequate existing evidence base.

What if my dissertation requires me to identify a research gap?

You still need a question that is both feasible and capable of making a defensible contribution. A degree requirement does not make an artificial gap scientifically meaningful. If the original gap is unsuitable, refine the question, identify a different unresolved problem, or pursue a contribution that is methodological, theoretical, confirmatory, or contextual for a defensible reason.

Can I mention a research gap without recommending another study?

Yes. You can report accurately that uncertainty remains while explaining that further research currently has low priority, would be unlikely to resolve the issue, or requires conditions that do not yet exist. Identifying a gap and recommending research are separate judgments.

Can a low-priority research gap become important later?

Yes. New technologies, policies, scientific findings, stakeholder needs, risks, methods, data sources, or changes in cost can alter the consequences of uncertainty and the feasibility of studying it. Priority judgments should therefore be revisited when relevant conditions change.

Who should decide that a gap is not worth filling?

The appropriate decision makers depend on the context. Scientific experts can assess the evidence and methodological feasibility, while affected stakeholders, practitioners, policymakers, funders, or institutions may contribute information about consequences and priorities. As with deciding whether a research gap is important, the criteria and relevant perspectives should be explicit.

Good Research Judgment Includes Knowing Which Gaps Not to Fill

The Bottom Line

Leave a research gap unfilled when additional research is unlikely to produce enough useful knowledge to justify its costs, burdens, risks, or opportunity costs, or when the important question has already been answered adequately.

A genuine unknown is not automatically a research priority. Sometimes the responsible decision is to redirect resources toward a more consequential uncertainty, wait until stronger research becomes possible, or accept that a low-value question can remain unanswered. Research is not improved merely by making the map of unknowns smaller.
