A Real Research Gap Does Not Automatically Create a Research Need
First ask whether the gap actually still exists
Before deciding whether to leave a gap unfilled, make sure you are dealing with a genuine current gap.
A gap described in an older review may have been addressed by subsequent studies. Relevant evidence may exist under different terminology, in another discipline, or in a population you did not initially search. Several studies may also provide an adequate answer even though nobody has conducted the exact study you originally imagined.
This distinction matters because "nobody has done my proposed study" and "important evidence is missing" are not equivalent claims.
If uncertainty is already adequately resolved, the appropriate response is not to leave a gap unfilled. There may no longer be a meaningful gap to fill. Before making the decision, check whether existing or recent research has already addressed it.
Leave it alone when the missing knowledge would change very little
A question can be genuinely unanswered while the answer has negligible consequence.
Suppose you could determine an unknown fact with considerable precision, but no plausible result would materially change theory, methodology, practice, policy, an important decision, or the direction of subsequent research. The information would be new, but its incremental value might be very small.
That does not make curiosity illegitimate. Basic and exploratory research can have value without immediate application. Yet when research requires meaningful funding, participant involvement, institutional capacity, or years of researcher effort, opportunity cost becomes harder to ignore.
If the likely answer would change almost nothing of consequence, the gap generally has a weaker claim to those resources.
Leave it unfilled when the only available study cannot resolve it
An important gap does not make an uninformative study informative.
Perhaps the question requires longitudinal evidence but only a small cross-sectional dataset is available. Perhaps causal inference is central, but the feasible design cannot address major alternative explanations. Perhaps the necessary subgroup is too rare for the available sample to provide a useful estimate.
In these circumstances, conducting the study may increase the number of publications without substantially improving the answer.
Important unanswered question
A reliable answer could make a meaningful scientific or practical difference.
Informative feasible study
A study that can reduce the important uncertainty enough to improve what can reasonably be concluded or decided.
The first does not guarantee the second. When the only feasible study would provide evidence too weak to move the question forward, waiting for better methods, data, collaboration, infrastructure, or resources may be more defensible.
Leave it unfilled when the cost is disproportionate to the likely information gained
Some questions are answerable, but only through studies requiring substantial funding, infrastructure, time, participant burden, or risk.
High cost alone does not make research unjustifiable. A very expensive study can provide excellent value when it resolves uncertainty affecting consequential decisions. Conversely, even a moderately expensive study can represent poor value if its answer matters little.
The relevant comparison is between what the study requires and what better information could accomplish.
Formal value-of-information methods provide one approach to evaluating whether the expected benefits of reducing uncertainty justify further research in decision contexts where such modeling is appropriate. More generally, research prioritization frameworks recognize that limited funding makes comparison among research needs necessary.
If an extremely expensive study would produce relatively little useful information, leaving the gap unresolved may be reasonable.
Leave it unfilled when the study would be unnecessarily redundant
Replication and confirmation are important parts of science. Redundancy is therefore not simply the existence of previous research.
The relevant question is whether another study would add information that matters.
A replication may test whether an influential finding is reproducible. A larger study may provide needed precision. A study in a different population may test an important boundary condition. A stronger design may address bias in earlier evidence.
But repeating a well-established result using essentially the same design, population, measurements, and inferential limitations may add little. The literature can become larger without becoming substantially more informative.
Concerns about avoidable research waste have therefore included whether new studies are justified by what is already known and whether systematic reviews of existing evidence inform decisions to undertake further research.
Leave it unfilled when the question is artificially novel
Almost any mature literature can be subdivided until an untouched combination appears.
No study has examined Variable A with Variable B among Population C in Location D using Method E during Period F. That statement may be factually correct and still provide almost no reason for conducting the study.
If changing the population, location, variable combination, or method does not address a meaningful limitation or consequential uncertainty, the gap may amount to novelty by construction.
This is precisely the situation to avoid when trying not to invent a research gap merely to justify a study.
Leave it unfilled when the answer is unlikely to arrive in time to be useful
Research value can depend on timing.
AHRQ's work on research-gap prioritization identifies timeliness among possible criteria for setting priorities. In rapidly changing areas, evidence may need to become available within a particular decision window. A five-year study may be methodologically excellent but less useful for a policy decision that must be made next year.
This does not mean long-term research should automatically be abandoned. Some important questions necessarily require years of investigation, and failing to begin them simply pushes the answer further into the future.
The useful question is whether the expected evidence will remain relevant when it becomes available.
Leave it unfilled when another uncertainty deserves the resources more
Research prioritization is comparative.
You may identify two gaps that are both genuine, important, feasible, and ethical to study. Yet your research team, institution, or funder can support only one.
Choosing the higher-priority gap means the other may remain unresolved even though it would have been worthwhile in isolation.
AHRQ's work on prioritizing research gaps emphasizes explicit criteria because limited funding requires choices among many legitimate research needs. Potential impact, foundational importance, underfunded areas, timeliness, and stakeholder perspectives are among the considerations that may enter such decisions.
Thus, "worth studying" does not necessarily mean "worth studying before everything else."
Ethical considerations can override informational value
Some knowledge may be valuable but cannot ethically be obtained through the study that would be required to answer the question.
Research involving humans must satisfy applicable ethical requirements concerning matters such as risk, informed consent, participant selection, and the relationship between burdens and anticipated benefits. An unanswered question does not suspend those obligations.
When the informative study would expose participants to unjustifiable risk or burden and no acceptable alternative exists, the gap may need to remain unresolved.
Sometimes another design can provide indirect or less definitive evidence ethically. In other cases, uncertainty is simply the scientifically honest outcome.
"Leave it unfilled" can mean "not yet"
Research feasibility is not static.
A rare population may later become accessible through international collaboration. New measurement technology may make a previously impossible variable observable. Administrative datasets may become linkable. Costs may fall. Better analytical methods may improve what can be learned from observational evidence.
Stakeholder priorities can change too, as can the consequences attached to an uncertainty.
A decision not to study a gap now should therefore record why. That makes it possible to reconsider the question if the relevant conditions change.
Watch Out
Do not use "low priority" as a convenient label for questions that are merely difficult, unfashionable, or important to groups with little influence over research agendas. Before leaving a gap unresolved, make the criteria explicit and consider whose consequences and priorities are represented in the decision.
