Does Every Missing Piece of Knowledge Deserve a Study?

Something can be genuinely unknown without being worth investigating. A defensible study requires more than a gap: the missing knowledge should matter, and research should have a reasonable chance of producing useful evidence.

01 · The Question

If Something Is Unknown, Is That Enough Reason to Study It?

Once you start looking closely at a literature, missing pieces are remarkably easy to find. A population has not been studied. A variable has not been tested with another variable. A study has not been replicated in a particular setting. A possible comparison remains unexplored.

These may all be genuine absences in the literature. But does every absence justify a new study?

No research field has unlimited researchers, participants, funding, laboratory capacity, institutional support, or time. Choosing to investigate one question therefore means directing resources toward it rather than somewhere else. The relevant question is not merely whether something remains unknown, but whether reducing that uncertainty would be sufficiently useful to justify the research required.

02 · The Short Answer

No. Missing Knowledge and Worthwhile Research Are Not the Same Thing

In Brief

No. Every missing piece of knowledge can be described as an uncertainty, but not every uncertainty creates a research need worth pursuing.

A stronger justification considers what could be gained by obtaining the missing evidence, who could use it, how consequential the uncertainty is, whether the answer could change understanding or decisions, and whether a feasible study can meaningfully reduce the uncertainty. Research-gap frameworks themselves distinguish gaps in available evidence from research needs that matter to decision makers.

03 · What You Need to Know

A Research Gap Is Only the Beginning of the Justification

A gap tells you what is missing, not whether it matters

A useful distinction is between identifying an absence in knowledge and deciding that the absence deserves additional research.

In work on identifying research gaps from systematic reviews, Robinson, Saldanha, and McKoy defined a research gap as missing or inadequate information that limits the ability to reach a conclusion for a question. They separately described a research need as a gap that limits decision makers. Within that framework, a gap may therefore exist without necessarily becoming a research need.

Research gap Information relevant to a question is missing, inadequate, inconsistent, biased, or otherwise insufficient for a conclusion.
Research need The unresolved evidence matters enough that addressing it could provide information useful to relevant decision makers or other users of the research.

The terminology varies across disciplines, so you should not treat this distinction as a universal definition. The underlying principle is more general: identifying uncertainty and prioritizing uncertainty are separate judgments.

Novelty does not establish value

"No previous study has examined X" can establish that X appears to be unstudied. It does not tell you why anyone should study X.

This matters because the space of possible unanswered questions is enormous. You can often produce novelty simply by changing a population, location, measurement, combination of variables, or analytical technique. If novelty alone were sufficient, almost every unexplored combination would deserve investigation.

A stronger argument asks what becomes possible if the missing knowledge is obtained. Could it improve an important theoretical explanation? Resolve uncertainty affecting practice or policy? Establish evidence needed for a consequential decision? Correct potentially misleading existing evidence? Enable more informative future research?

If the likely answer would change little in theory, practice, policy, or future research, the mere existence of the gap provides a weak reason for prioritizing it.

Importance is partly about the consequences of remaining uncertain

One useful way to evaluate a gap is to imagine that nobody studies it for the next several years. What happens?

For some questions, very little changes. Researchers remain unaware of a minor detail, but no important explanation, decision, intervention, or subsequent investigation depends on knowing it.

For other questions, continuing uncertainty may have substantial consequences. People may have to choose between interventions without adequate comparative evidence. Policymakers may allocate resources under considerable uncertainty. Researchers may continue building studies on an assumption that has never been tested adequately.

This is why even a small gap can sometimes deserve considerable attention when the consequences of uncertainty are large.

Priority depends on more than scientific curiosity

Curiosity is indispensable to research, but research prioritization often requires additional considerations. AHRQ's work on prioritizing research gaps, for example, discusses criteria such as potential research impact, whether research addresses foundational questions, and timeliness. It also emphasizes transparent prioritization and stakeholder involvement.

Different disciplines and research systems will reasonably use different criteria. A theoretical discipline may place substantial value on explanatory significance even when immediate practical application is limited. Applied research may give greater weight to decisions faced by practitioners, communities, organizations, or policymakers.

Consequently, asking whether a gap is "important" requires you to specify important for what purpose and to whom. This is also why researchers are not necessarily the only people whose judgments matter.

The right response to a gap may not be a new primary study

Even an important gap does not automatically imply that you should collect new data.

The relevant evidence may already exist but remain unsynthesized. Existing datasets might permit a suitable secondary analysis. A replication may be more informative than another novel study. Methodological work may be necessary before the substantive question can be answered credibly.

Cochrane guidance on implications for future research similarly encourages reviewers to consider what further research would actually be desirable in light of the current evidence, including the populations, interventions, comparisons, and outcomes that should be addressed more effectively.

A worthwhile gap also needs a credible route to better evidence

Suppose a question is undeniably important, but the only feasible study would provide evidence too weak to reduce the uncertainty meaningfully. The importance of the question has not disappeared. Yet the proposed study may still be difficult to justify.

This separates the value of the question from the value of a particular study. You can have an important gap and a poor research design for addressing it.

Before committing resources, therefore, ask whether the proposed research can actually improve the evidence. If the only feasible study would provide weak evidence, postponing the research, changing the design, or developing better methods may be more defensible than conducting a study simply because the gap exists.

Watch Out

Do not work backward from a study you already want to conduct and search for any missing detail that can be presented as its justification. That approach makes novelty easy to manufacture. Start with the uncertainty and its importance, then ask what research, if any, would address it adequately.

04 · A Practical Example

Two Genuine Gaps Can Have Very Different Research Value

Hypothetical Example

Choosing between two unanswered questions about a learning platform

Suppose a university research team studies a widely used online learning platform and identifies two questions for which it cannot find adequate evidence.

Gap A No published study appears to compare whether students prefer one of two visually similar dashboard icon arrangements.
Gap B Existing studies do not establish whether an automated intervention used to identify struggling students systematically performs differently across important student groups.
Both are gaps Assume careful searching confirms that the relevant information is genuinely missing in both cases.
The consequences differ Uncertainty about the icon arrangement may have little effect beyond a minor interface preference. Uncertainty about differential performance could affect which students receive support and whether the system is used responsibly.
The research priority differs Other things being equal, Gap B presents a stronger case for research because resolving it could inform a consequential decision. Gap A remains a genuine absence of knowledge, but its existence alone does not make it a high research priority.

The comparison is intentionally simple. In actual research prioritization, costs, feasibility, theoretical significance, stakeholder priorities, existing evidence, and the expected informativeness of the proposed study may alter the judgment.

The point is that "nobody knows" and "we need to know" are different claims. The second requires an argument that the first does not.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Turning Missing Knowledge Into a Study

Misconception

If Nobody Has Studied It, Doesn't That Make It Important?

No. Absence of prior research establishes novelty more readily than importance. Some questions may be unstudied precisely because researchers and stakeholders have had little reason to prioritize them. You still need to establish what is gained by answering the question.

Misconception

Does Every Limitation in a Published Paper Create a Future Study?

No. Authors routinely acknowledge limitations, but not every limitation materially threatens the conclusions or creates a consequential unanswered question. A useful future study should address an uncertainty that matters, not merely convert every limitation paragraph into a research agenda.

Misconception

If a Study Is Easy and Cheap, Is That Enough Reason to Do It?

Feasibility is relevant, but ease does not create importance. A low-cost study that produces information of negligible value may still be a poor use of participants' time and research effort. Conversely, an important question may justify substantial resources if the expected knowledge is sufficiently valuable.

Misconception

Does Every Gap Need New Data?

No. The appropriate response may be evidence synthesis, secondary analysis, replication, methodological development, or no additional research at present. The research method should follow from what is needed to reduce the uncertainty.

Misconception

Can Researchers Decide Importance Entirely by Themselves?

Researchers provide essential scientific judgment, but importance can depend on who will use or be affected by the evidence. Patients, communities, practitioners, policymakers, funders, and other stakeholders may identify consequences or priorities that are not obvious from the academic literature alone.

06 · What This Means for You

Move From “What Is Missing?” to “What Is Worth Knowing?”

When you identify a gap, resist treating discovery of the gap as the end of your justification. It is better understood as the beginning of a second evaluation.

A simple decision framework

If the information is missing but resolving it would have little scientific or practical consequence
Acknowledge the gap, but do not assume it deserves a study.
If the uncertainty affects an important theoretical claim, decision, population, policy, practice, or subsequent line of research
Evaluate it as a potentially important research need.
If the question matters but existing evidence could answer it through synthesis or reanalysis
Consider those approaches before collecting new data.
If the question matters but no feasible design can substantially reduce the uncertainty
Reconsider the proposed study rather than equating importance of the gap with usefulness of any study addressing it.
If the gap matters and a feasible study could generate meaningfully better evidence
You have a substantially stronger basis for proceeding.

This reasoning also helps when several legitimate gaps compete for your attention. Instead of asking which is most novel, compare what could be learned, how consequential the uncertainty is, and whether the proposed research can actually improve the evidence.

Sometimes the appropriate conclusion will be that a research gap should remain unfilled, at least for now. That is not a failure to find a research topic. It is research prioritization doing its job.

Before Turning a Knowledge Gap Into a Study, Check This

Before deciding that a missing piece of knowledge deserves research, check:
Verify that the information is genuinely missing or inadequate rather than merely difficult to find.
State precisely what remains uncertain and why the existing evidence cannot answer the question adequately.
Identify who could use the answer or what scientific problem the answer would help resolve.
Ask what meaningful consequence follows from continuing to lack the information.
Determine whether resolving the gap could change understanding, decisions, methods, policy, practice, or subsequent research.
Consider whether new primary research is actually the best way to obtain the needed evidence.
Check whether a feasible design can reduce the important uncertainty rather than merely produce another publication about it.
Compare the expected value of addressing this gap with other plausible uses of the same research resources.

Questions About Which Research Gaps Deserve Studies

Is every research gap a research problem?

Not necessarily. A gap describes missing or inadequate knowledge, while a research problem usually requires a more specific justification for why that uncertainty deserves investigation. Terminology differs across disciplines, so explain how you are using these concepts rather than assuming universal definitions.

How do I know whether a research gap is important enough?

Consider what depends on the answer, who would benefit from better evidence, the consequences of remaining uncertain, the potential scientific or practical contribution, and whether feasible research could substantially improve what is known. These judgments are contextual rather than reducible to a single threshold.

Can a completely new topic still be a weak research idea?

Yes. Complete novelty does not guarantee scientific or practical significance. An unstudied question may be less valuable than a poorly studied question whose answer has substantial consequences.

Can a very small research gap still deserve a study?

Yes. The physical or conceptual size of the missing piece is not the only consideration. A narrow uncertainty may deserve research when an important decision depends on resolving it or when small uncertainty carries large consequences.

Who should decide which gaps receive priority?

The appropriate participants depend on the research context. Researchers can assess scientific significance and methodological feasibility, while stakeholders may contribute knowledge about practical consequences, lived priorities, implementation, and decision needs. Transparent criteria make those judgments easier to examine.

Can I mention a gap even if I do not think it deserves another study?

Yes. Describing uncertainty accurately does not obligate you to recommend further research. In a review or discussion section, you can explain that information remains limited while also explaining why additional research may currently have low priority.

Do Not Confuse the Existence of a Gap With the Need for a Study

The Bottom Line

No. A missing piece of knowledge deserves a study only when there is a defensible reason to reduce that uncertainty and an appropriate form of research can provide useful evidence.

Finding something nobody knows is comparatively easy. The harder and more important task is showing why knowing it would matter. Treat the research gap as the starting point of that argument, not its conclusion.
