Can You Use More Than One Theory in the Same Study?

A research study can use more than one theory when each perspective contributes something necessary to understanding the problem. The challenge is not the number of theories but whether their roles, assumptions, and relationships are coherent.

01 · The Question

Is Using Two or More Theories Methodologically Acceptable?

You find one theory that explains part of your research problem very well, but another theory captures something important that the first one overlooks. Can you use both?

Yes, potentially. Researchers sometimes use multiple theories to examine different dimensions or levels of a phenomenon, generate complementary explanations, compare competing explanations, or construct a more comprehensive theoretical account.

The difficulty begins when additional theories are included without a clear reason. Two theories do not automatically provide twice the explanatory power. They can instead produce duplicated constructs, contradictory assumptions, an oversized research model, or a theoretical framework whose pieces never actually connect.

The question is therefore not simply how many theories a study is allowed to have. It is what each additional theory enables you to understand that the others cannot adequately address.

Yes, but Every Additional Theory Needs a Job

In Brief

Yes. A research study can use two or more theories when doing so is justified by the research question and each theory contributes a distinct or complementary explanatory perspective.

Multiple theories can deepen analysis, address different levels of a phenomenon, or permit competing explanations to be examined. They can also create redundancy and conceptual inconsistency. More theory is therefore not inherently better; the researcher must explain why each theory is needed and how the perspectives relate.

03 · What You Need to Know

Multiple Theories Are Useful Only When They Add Distinct Explanatory Value

There is no general one-theory-per-study rule

Research problems do not organize themselves according to the boundaries of individual theories. A complex phenomenon may involve individual behavior, interpersonal relationships, organizational structures, institutional conditions, cultural meanings, or broader social forces. One theory may illuminate only part of that landscape.

Methodological literature discusses multiple-theory approaches under several labels, including theoretical pluralism, theoretical triangulation, multi-theoretical research, and theoretical integration. These terms are not always synonymous, but they share a recognition that more than one theoretical perspective can contribute to understanding a phenomenon.

Recent qualitative methodological scholarship likewise recognizes that researchers may remain open to several theoretical perspectives rather than assuming that one framework must monopolize interpretation.

There is therefore no methodological principle stating that every research study must select exactly one theory.

Multiple theories can explain different parts of the same problem

One of the clearest reasons to use multiple theories is complementary coverage.

Suppose a study examines university instructors' adoption of generative AI. One theory may explain individual behavioral intentions. Another may explain how organizational norms, institutional structures, or professional communities influence adoption.

If the research question genuinely operates across those levels, using both perspectives could reveal something that either theory alone would miss.

This does not necessarily mean merging the theories. Researchers can use them as distinct but complementary perspectives, provided they explain which part of the problem each theory addresses.

Theories can operate at different levels of analysis

A frequent justification for multiple theories is that a phenomenon crosses analytical levels.

Consider teacher technology use. An individual-level theory might explain beliefs, motivation, or intentions. A group-level perspective might address peer norms or collaborative practices. An organizational theory might explain leadership, resources, policies, or institutional routines.

If the research question concerns interactions across those levels, relying exclusively on one individual-level theory may leave organizational processes unexplained.

But adding a theory at each conceivable level is not automatically sophisticated. Researchers must still determine which levels are necessary for answering the actual question.

Theories can offer complementary explanations at the same level

Multiple theories do not need to operate at different levels. Two theories may address the same phenomenon from different conceptual perspectives.

For example, theories of learning can emphasize different mechanisms even though all concern learning. Contemporary guidance on theory use notes that theories addressing a similar phenomenon may share concepts while connecting those concepts differently and directing attention toward different aspects of the phenomenon.

Using more than one perspective may therefore expose dimensions that would remain less visible under a single lens.

You can use theories competitively rather than combining them

Sometimes the point is not to make theories cooperate.

Two theories may offer competing explanations for the same phenomenon. Researchers can derive expectations from each and examine which explanation is more consistent with the evidence under specified conditions.

This strategy is sometimes described as theoretical triangulation or a competing-theories approach. It can be valuable because it makes alternative explanations explicit rather than treating the researcher's preferred theory as the only plausible account.

However, a simple contest between theories can be misleading if the theories explain different aspects of the phenomenon or operate under different assumptions. Evidence supporting one prediction does not necessarily invalidate an entire competing theory.

You can use theories sequentially

Theories can also contribute at different stages of a study.

One theoretical perspective might inform the research questions or sampling strategy, while another becomes useful during interpretation because unexpected patterns emerge. A mixed-methods study might use one perspective to structure quantitative relationships and another to illuminate processes or meanings examined qualitatively.

Such arrangements require transparency. Readers should be able to see when each theory entered the research process and what role it played.

Using multiple theories is different from combining them into one framework

This distinction is important.

You can use Theory A and Theory B alongside each other without claiming that they form one integrated theory. For example, each may analyze a different dimension of the phenomenon, or their explanations may be deliberately compared.

Combining them goes further. It requires specifying how constructs, assumptions, mechanisms, or propositions from the theories connect within a coherent explanatory structure.

Research guidance on hypothesis development warns that multiple theories can appear ad hoc when researchers use each one merely to justify a different hypothesis. Meaningful integration requires explaining why the research question needs the theories and how their theoretical logics connect.

Whether combining theories strengthens a study or creates a mess therefore depends on the quality of the integration rather than the number of citations involved.

The assumptions behind the theories matter

Two theories can contain appealing constructs while resting on substantially different assumptions about human behavior, knowledge, causation, organizations, or society.

This does not automatically make them impossible to use together. Theoretical pluralism sometimes deliberately preserves different perspectives because their tensions reveal different dimensions of the phenomenon.

Problems arise when researchers combine constructs while ignoring the assumptions that give those constructs meaning.

A concept removed from its theoretical context may not mean quite the same thing after transplantation. Researchers should therefore examine not only whether the variables “fit” together but whether the theoretical reasoning behind them is compatible, complementary, deliberately contrasting, or genuinely contradictory.

Watch Out

Do not construct a multi-theory framework by selecting attractive variables from several theories and connecting them with arrows after the fact. The resulting diagram may be larger, but unless the theoretical relationships are justified, it is not necessarily more explanatory.

Overlapping constructs can create redundancy

Different theories sometimes describe similar ideas using different terminology. If two theories contain constructs representing closely related phenomena, including both without examining conceptual overlap can produce redundancy.

This can become a measurement problem as well as a theoretical one. Two scales may appear to measure different theoretical constructs while capturing substantially overlapping content.

Before combining theories, compare their constructs carefully. Ask whether they are genuinely distinct, partially overlapping, nested, differently defined, or alternative representations of the same underlying idea.

Parsimony still matters

A systematic review of studies combining implementation frameworks noted a central trade-off: multiple frameworks can address different purposes, levels, theoretical perspectives, or operational needs, but they can also introduce unnecessary complexity and redundancy when one framework would have been sufficient.

The same principle applies more broadly to theories.

If Theory A already provides the explanatory resources required to answer the research question, adding Theory B because it contains one interesting variable may not improve the study. Researchers should be able to state the unique contribution of every additional theoretical perspective.

The objective is not to minimize theory at all costs. It is to avoid complexity without explanatory return.

Multiple theories can be especially useful for complex phenomena

Some research problems resist explanation from a single vantage point. Studies of educational technology, health behavior, organizational change, policy implementation, inequality, or professional practice may involve mechanisms distributed across individuals, relationships, institutions, and contexts.

Multiple perspectives can make such complexity more visible.

Yet “the phenomenon is complex” is not sufficient justification by itself. Nearly every phenomenon becomes complex when examined closely. The researcher still needs to identify which dimensions matter for the question and why particular theories are needed to explain them.

The research question should determine whether theoretical plurality is necessary

The strongest justification for multiple theories usually returns to the research question.

Ask what the question requires you to explain. Then determine whether one theory can reasonably provide that explanation.

If not, identify precisely what remains unexplained and whether another theory addresses that gap. This protects against accumulating theories simply because they appear relevant to the broad topic.

It also connects multiple-theory use to a more fundamental principle: theory should be selected for conceptual fit, not familiarity or prestige.

04 · A Practical Example

When Two Theories Explain More Than One

Hypothetical Example

Understanding faculty adoption of generative AI

Suppose researchers want to understand why faculty members adopt generative AI for teaching and why adoption differs substantially among departments within the same university.

What Theory A contributes An individual-level technology adoption theory explains how faculty beliefs about the technology may influence intention and use.
What remains unexplained Faculty members with similar individual beliefs still behave differently across departments, suggesting that individual cognition alone may not capture the whole problem.
What Theory B contributes An organizational or social perspective helps explain how departmental norms, leadership, resources, or collective practices shape the conditions under which individual adoption occurs.
Why both are used The research question explicitly concerns both individual adoption and variation across organizational contexts. Each theory therefore addresses a distinguishable component of the explanation.

This is a stronger rationale than saying, “The study uses Theory A and Theory B because both have previously been used to investigate technology adoption.” Prior use establishes relevance, but it does not establish necessity.

Now imagine that Theory B adds several constructs that substantially duplicate concepts already represented by Theory A and contributes no new level, mechanism, prediction, or interpretation. In that case, adding it may create more work without increasing explanatory value.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Using Multiple Theories

Misconception

Using more theories makes the framework stronger

The number of theories is not an indicator of theoretical sophistication. A focused study using one theory coherently may provide a stronger explanation than a sprawling framework containing four theories with unclear relationships.

Misconception

If one theory misses a variable, you should add another theory that contains it

Theories are explanatory systems, not variable catalogs. Adding an entire theory to obtain one construct may introduce assumptions and relationships that the study does not need. First determine whether the additional concept can be justified through other literature or whether incorporating it genuinely constitutes theoretical extension.

Misconception

Theories that discuss the same topic are automatically compatible

Shared subject matter does not guarantee compatible assumptions or explanations. Two theories may define similar concepts differently, operate at different analytical levels, or make competing claims about mechanisms. Their relationship needs to be examined rather than assumed.

Misconception

Using two theories means you must merge them

No. Theories can be used complementarily, comparatively, competitively, sequentially, or at different levels without being synthesized into one framework. Integration is only one possible multi-theory strategy.

Misconception

You can assign one theory to each hypothesis

You can derive different hypotheses from different theories, but doing so without an overarching rationale risks creating an ad hoc theoretical collection. The study should explain why the research problem requires those perspectives and how the hypotheses collectively address the central question.

Misconception

Contradictory theories cannot appear in the same study

Contradiction can itself be analytically useful. Researchers may compare competing explanations or deliberately examine a phenomenon through perspectives with different assumptions. What matters is that the tension is acknowledged and methodologically purposeful rather than concealed.

06 · What This Means for You

Give Every Theory a Distinct Reason to Be There

If you are considering a second theory, do not begin by asking whether multiple theories are permitted. Ask what the second theory adds.

A simple decision framework

If one theory adequately explains what your research question requires
Prefer the simpler framework unless another perspective provides a clear additional benefit.
If different parts or levels of the phenomenon require different explanations
Multiple theories may provide complementary perspectives. Specify the domain or explanatory role of each.
If two theories offer competing explanations
Consider comparing them explicitly rather than pretending they form one unified account.
If you intend to integrate theories
Examine their constructs, assumptions, mechanisms, scope, and points of overlap before building the combined framework.
If you cannot state what the additional theory uniquely contributes
Leave it out.

A useful exercise is to write one sentence for each theory: “We use Theory A because it explains...” and “We use Theory B because it explains...” Then write a third sentence explaining why the research question requires both explanations.

If the first two sentences are nearly identical, you may have redundancy. If the third sentence is difficult to write, the relationship between the theories probably needs more work.

If the theories genuinely need to be integrated rather than simply used alongside one another, examine when combining theories produces a coherent explanation before constructing the final framework.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Using More Than One Theory

For every additional theory, check:
State the specific part of the research question that each theory helps explain.
Identify the unique explanatory contribution of each theory rather than citing general relevance to the topic.
Compare overlapping constructs and determine whether they are genuinely distinct or conceptually redundant.
Check whether the theories operate at the same or different levels of analysis.
Examine whether their underlying assumptions are compatible, complementary, or deliberately contradictory.
Decide whether the theories will be integrated, compared, used in parallel, or assigned distinct analytical roles.
Remove any theory that adds complexity without a clear explanatory or analytical contribution.
Make sure your data and methods can actually address the concepts and relationships introduced by all included theories.
Explain the multi-theory rationale explicitly so readers do not have to infer why the perspectives appear together.
08 · Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Using Multiple Theories

How many theories can I use in one study?

There is no universal numerical limit. Use only as many as the research question genuinely requires and the study can apply coherently. Each additional theory increases the burden of conceptual justification, operationalization, analysis, and interpretation.

Is using two theories better than using one?

Not inherently. Two theories are useful when the second contributes explanatory or analytical value that the first cannot provide adequately. If one theory answers the theoretical needs of the study, adding another may simply reduce parsimony.

Can two theories contradict each other?

Yes. Researchers can use competing theories deliberately to examine alternative explanations. The contradiction should be made explicit, and the study design should be capable of producing evidence relevant to the competing claims. Contradictory assumptions should not simply be blended without explanation.

Do I need to combine two theories if I use both?

No. They may be used as complementary lenses, compared as alternative explanations, applied to different analytical levels, or used at different stages. Combining them into one integrated framework is a stronger claim that requires additional theoretical justification.

Can I use one theory for the quantitative part and another for the qualitative part?

Potentially, particularly when the theories serve distinct purposes that correspond to the different components of a mixed-methods design. You should still explain how the theoretical perspectives relate to the overall research question and how their resulting insights will be interpreted together.

Can qualitative research use multiple theories?

Yes. Multiple theoretical perspectives can be used to illuminate different meanings, processes, or dimensions of qualitative data. Theoretical plurality should be methodologically justified, and researchers should remain clear about what each perspective foregrounds and potentially obscures.

What if two theories contain similar constructs?

Compare their definitions, theoretical roles, assumptions, and measurement implications before treating them as distinct. Similar labels can conceal different meanings, while different labels can sometimes represent substantial conceptual overlap.

Can I add another theory after the study has started?

Sometimes. An additional perspective may become relevant as analysis develops, particularly in iterative or qualitative research. In confirmatory studies, adding theory after examining results raises different concerns and should not be presented retrospectively as though it generated hypotheses or design decisions that were actually made earlier.

The Bottom Line

You can use more than one theory in the same study when each theory makes a necessary and identifiable contribution to answering the research question.

The strongest multi-theory studies do not accumulate perspectives for appearance. They explain why one theory is insufficient, what each additional perspective contributes, and whether the theories complement, compete with, or integrate with one another. If an additional theory does not change what you can explain or understand, it probably does not need to be there.

When Does Combining Theories Actually Improve an Explanation?

One theory explains individual beliefs well, but another captures the institutional context. A third contains a construct that seems relevant to your findings. It can be tempting to bring all three together and describe the result as an integrated theoretical framework.

Sometimes that is exactly what a research problem needs. Theoretical integration can connect complementary explanations, reveal relationships across levels of analysis, reduce fragmentation among overlapping theories, or produce an account that explains more than any constituent theory could independently.

But integration is not accomplished by placing constructs from several theories in the same diagram.

Theories contain assumptions, concepts, propositions, mechanisms, boundaries, and levels of explanation. When those elements are combined without examining how they relate, the resulting framework may become larger without becoming more explanatory.

The real question is whether combining the theories solves an intellectual problem or merely creates a more complicated one.

Integration becomes problematic when researchers combine theories mainly to accumulate variables, ignore conceptual overlap or incompatibility, or cannot explain what the combined framework accomplishes that the individual theories do not. Theoretical integration requires synthesis, not assembly.

Theoretical Integration Is More Than Using Several Theories at Once

A study can use more than one theory without combining them.

Researchers might use one theory to explain individual behavior and another to examine organizational context. They might compare two competing explanations. A qualitative study might interpret the same phenomenon through different theoretical lenses. In each case, the theories can remain conceptually distinct.

Integration makes a stronger claim. It brings theoretical ideas into a common explanatory structure and specifies how their concepts, propositions, or mechanisms relate.

That distinction matters. Before attempting integration, first decide whether you actually need to use more than one theory in the same study. If separate perspectives already answer the research question adequately, forcing them into a unified framework may contribute little.

Integration should begin with an explanatory problem

A defensible integration starts with something that existing theories cannot adequately explain independently.

Perhaps Theory A explains individual intentions but says little about institutional constraints. Theory B explains institutional conditions but provides limited insight into how individuals respond to them. If your research question concerns how institutional conditions shape individual decisions, connecting the two may address a genuine theoretical gap.

Another possibility is fragmentation. Several theories may describe closely related phenomena using overlapping constructs and propositions. Integrating them may reveal redundancies, clarify distinctions, or produce a more parsimonious explanation.

In either case, the rationale should be more specific than “both theories are relevant.” Many theories are relevant to broad topics. Integration requires explaining why the relationship between them matters.

There are different ways to understand theoretical integration

Theoretical integration does not have one universally standardized form. Recent methodological discussions distinguish at least two broad possibilities.

One approach places theories within a common conceptual structure while preserving their constructs and propositions. The resulting framework helps researchers see how distinct explanations occupy different parts of a larger theoretical landscape.

A stronger form of integration attempts to merge overlapping constructs or propositions, reducing conceptual redundancy and producing a more unified explanation.

Organizing theories together Theories are situated within a common framework but retain their distinct concepts and explanatory identities.
Integrating theories Concepts, propositions, or mechanisms are synthesized to create a more unified theoretical explanation.

The second approach demands considerably more justification because researchers are not merely comparing theories. They are making claims about which theoretical elements can legitimately be connected, reconciled, or consolidated.

Complementarity is one good reason to integrate

Theories may be complementary when each explains a different but connected part of the phenomenon.

Consider a study of faculty adoption of generative AI. One theory might explain how perceived characteristics of the technology influence individual intention. Another might explain how organizational norms and institutional arrangements shape opportunities for adoption.

If the research question concerns how institutional conditions influence the relationship between individual beliefs and actual use, the theories may connect meaningfully. The integration creates a bridge between explanations that otherwise remain separate.

This can be especially useful when a phenomenon crosses levels of analysis, although researchers must explain how those levels connect rather than merely placing individual-level and organizational-level variables in the same model.

Convergence can justify integration

Different theories sometimes contain constructs or propositions that substantially overlap despite using different terminology.

Recent work on theoretical integration in motivation science argues that integration becomes particularly plausible when theories target the same or related phenomena and their constructs or propositions converge. In such circumstances, synthesis may reduce theoretical fragmentation and improve parsimony.

But apparent similarity can be deceptive.

Two theories may use the same label for concepts that have different definitions. Conversely, two differently named constructs may describe substantially similar phenomena. Researchers should therefore compare definitions, assumptions, mechanisms, and empirical operationalizations before deciding that concepts can be merged.

Different assumptions can make integration difficult

Theories do not consist only of variables.

They may embody assumptions about human agency, rationality, social structure, causation, knowledge, time, or the level at which explanation occurs. Cross-disciplinary theory integration is particularly vulnerable to hidden incompatibilities because theories developed in different intellectual traditions may begin from fundamentally different premises.

This does not mean theories with different assumptions can never appear in the same research project. Their disagreement may itself be analytically productive.

But using two theories in tension is different from claiming they have been integrated into one coherent explanation.

Watch Out

Before combining constructs, examine the assumptions that make those constructs meaningful within their original theories. Two theories can contain apparently compatible variables while offering fundamentally different accounts of what those variables mean or how explanation works.

Integration should preserve conceptual meaning

Suppose Theory A defines autonomy as freedom from external control, while Theory B uses a related concept to describe an internally experienced sense of volition. Treating the two as interchangeable because both concern “independence” could erase an important theoretical distinction.

The same problem occurs when researchers extract one attractive construct from a theory while ignoring the propositions that give the construct its explanatory role.

Theory integration requires tracing concepts back to their theoretical definitions. If a construct changes meaning in the integrated framework, that change should be acknowledged and justified.

Adding arrows is not the same as explaining relationships

Integrated frameworks often culminate in diagrams. The visual representation can be useful, but it can also conceal weak reasoning.

Suppose Theory A contains constructs A1 and A2, while Theory B contains B1 and B2. A researcher places all four constructs in one diagram and draws an arrow from A2 to B1.

Why should that relationship exist?

If the answer is simply that previous studies found a correlation, the researcher may have constructed an empirical model rather than theoretically integrated the two explanations. Integration requires reasoning about why the theories connect and what mechanism or proposition supports the new relationship.

A successful integration should produce something the original theories did not

This is perhaps the most useful test.

After integration, what can you explain, predict, conceptualize, or question that neither theory could accomplish independently?

Theoretical integrative reviews explicitly pursue this kind of synthesis by critically examining multiple theories and bringing them into conversation to reformulate, integrate, or construct theoretical understanding. Cross-disciplinary theory integration similarly aims to generate insights from the intersections and tensions among theoretical perspectives.

If the integrated framework merely contains every construct that appeared in the source theories, it may be comprehensive in volume but not in explanation.

Parsimony can improve through integration rather than suffer from it

Combining theories sounds as though it must create a larger framework. Good integration can sometimes do the opposite.

If two theories contain overlapping constructs or propositions, careful integration may identify redundancy and reduce the number of concepts needed to explain the phenomenon. Recent theoretical work distinguishes this kind of synthesis from simply hosting several theories inside a larger conceptual structure.

Parsimony does not mean making a theory simplistic. It means avoiding distinctions and components that do not improve explanation.

Not every inconsistency should be resolved

Researchers sometimes assume that theoretical integration requires eliminating disagreement.

It does not.

Differences between theories may reveal competing assumptions, alternative mechanisms, boundary conditions, or aspects of a phenomenon that resist synthesis. In those circumstances, maintaining theoretical plurality may be more intellectually honest than manufacturing a unified framework.

If two theories make genuinely competing claims, you might be better served by examining why different theories explain the same phenomenon differently rather than combining them prematurely.

Integration can itself become a theoretical contribution

When researchers systematically compare theories, identify their limitations and convergences, reconcile concepts, and specify new relationships, the resulting integration may contribute to theory rather than merely borrow it.

That contribution should be described proportionately. Adding one contextual variable to an established theory is not automatically a new integrated theory. More substantial theoretical claims require stronger conceptual development and evidence.

The distinction becomes important when deciding whether the research is simply applying existing theories or actually extending or building theoretical explanation.

From Two Relevant Theories to One Coherent Explanation

Hypothetical Example

Why faculty members with positive attitudes still do not adopt AI

Researchers find that an individual-level technology adoption theory explains why faculty members develop intentions to use generative AI. Yet intention does not consistently translate into actual classroom use. A second organizational theory suggests that institutional rules, resources, and professional norms constrain what individuals can actually do.

Identify the limitation The individual theory explains intention well but provides an incomplete explanation of why similar intentions lead to different behaviors across institutional settings.
