A study can be strong without organizing itself around a named formal theory, but it cannot be intellectually ungrounded. The research problem, concepts, methods, and interpretation still need a defensible basis in prior knowledge and methodological reasoning.

01 · The Question

If You Cannot Name a Theory, Is Something Missing From the Study?

You have a clear research problem, a defensible methodology, carefully defined concepts, and a substantial body of relevant literature. Yet your study is not organized around a named theory.

Does that automatically make the research theoretically weak?

Researchers receive conflicting advice on this question. Some methodological traditions place theory near the center of scholarly inquiry and argue that research is always influenced by theoretical assumptions, whether researchers acknowledge them or not. Other methodological discussions recognize that formal theorizing is not equally necessary for every kind of study, particularly when the research purpose is descriptive, exploratory, or practically oriented.

The disagreement partly reflects different meanings of “theory.” A study can lack a named formal theory without lacking concepts, assumptions, prior knowledge, methodological commitments, or an intellectual rationale.

The important question is therefore not simply whether you can place a famous theory's name under a heading. It is whether the study has enough conceptual and methodological coherence to make its questions, decisions, and interpretations defensible.

02 · The Short Answer

A Named Theory Is Not the Only Source of Research Coherence

In Brief

Yes. A study can be rigorous and valuable without organizing itself around a named formal theory, particularly when its purpose and methodology do not require one, but it still needs a clear intellectual foundation for what it investigates and how it interprets evidence.

The relevant foundation may come from established concepts, prior empirical literature, a conceptual framework, methodological or philosophical commitments, or other defensible scholarly reasoning. Whether a formal theory should be named depends on the research purpose, methodology, discipline, and applicable institutional or publication requirements.

03 · What You Need to Know

No Formal Theory Does Not Mean No Intellectual Framework

Formal theory is only one way of grounding research

A formal theory usually provides an established explanatory structure. It may identify constructs, propose relationships or mechanisms, specify assumptions, and help explain how or why a phenomenon occurs.

That can be enormously useful when explanation is central to the research question.

But not every research question requires the same kind of explanatory structure. Some studies primarily document a phenomenon, characterize a population, explore a poorly understood process, evaluate a practical intervention, develop concepts, or investigate experiences for which no single existing theory provides an adequate account.

Such studies still need intellectual grounding. They simply may not obtain all of it from one named theory.

Conceptual framing and formal theory are not identical

Published methodological literature does not use “theoretical framework” and “conceptual framework” consistently. Some authors distinguish them sharply, while others use the terms more broadly or interchangeably.

One useful distinction treats a theoretical framework as involving identifiable formal theory, while a conceptual framework is broader and can connect prior literature, relevant concepts, methodological assumptions, contextual knowledge, and researcher reasoning into a coherent account of the study.

Recent guidance on reporting qualitative research similarly notes the variation in terminology and emphasizes coherence among research questions, methods, and interpretation regardless of the framework's label.

This is why understanding the difference between theoretical and conceptual frameworks matters before concluding that a study without a formal theory has no framework at all.

A study still needs to explain why these concepts matter

Imagine a survey describing how university instructors use generative AI. The researchers do not select a formal technology-adoption theory because they are not attempting to explain adoption.

They still need to decide what counts as generative AI use. They need a defensible classification of teaching activities, an appropriate population, valid or otherwise justified measures, and a rationale for the dimensions included in the survey.

Those choices should come from somewhere.

Relevant scholarship, prior empirical findings, established classifications, methodological literature, and carefully justified conceptual decisions can provide that foundation.

A study becomes weak not because it lacks a named theory, but when readers cannot determine why particular concepts, categories, measures, comparisons, or interpretations were selected.

Descriptive research may have limited need for explanatory theory

Descriptive research provides a straightforward example.

If the question is “What proportion of faculty members currently use generative AI for assessment-related tasks?”, an explanatory theory may contribute little to estimating that proportion.

The study still needs a clear definition of AI use, an appropriate sampling strategy, defensible measurement, and recognition of the population to which the estimate can reasonably apply.

If the question becomes “Why are some faculty members more likely to use generative AI for assessment?”, the intellectual task changes. The researcher now seeks explanation, and theory may become much more valuable.

Whether descriptive research needs a theoretical framework therefore depends substantially on what the study is trying to accomplish.

Exploratory research can begin without committing to one formal theory

A poorly understood phenomenon may not yet have an obvious theoretical explanation. Researchers may deliberately preserve openness to concepts, mechanisms, or relationships that existing theories do not anticipate.

This does not mean the researchers know nothing about the phenomenon. Prior literature still informs the research problem, and existing theoretical ideas may operate as sensitizing concepts or later points of comparison.

The study may eventually engage strongly with theory during analysis or interpretation. It may also reveal that an existing theory explains the findings surprisingly well, that several theories are needed, or that the phenomenon remains insufficiently theorized.

Consequently, exploratory research can be theory-informed without requiring a rigid formal framework from the outset.

Qualitative research exposes the disagreement particularly clearly

There is genuine methodological disagreement about how explicitly theory should appear in qualitative research.

Some scholars argue strongly that theory is central to high-quality qualitative inquiry because it helps researchers move beyond surface description, informs design and interpretation, and connects findings with broader knowledge. Others caution against allowing conceptual frameworks to become prescriptions that substitute predetermined categories for deep engagement with data.

Empirical reviews also show substantial variation in practice. One review of qualitative health education and behavior research found studies using theory as sensitizing constructs, to inform data collection, to guide sampling, or as a product of analysis, while a substantial portion of the reviewed articles did not mention theory.

The implication is not that theory is optional because some published papers omit it. Rather, qualitative researchers should make deliberate decisions about the role of theory and explain those decisions in relation to their methodology.

The more specific question of whether qualitative research needs a theoretical framework therefore cannot be answered by a universal yes or no.

No named theory does not mean theory has no influence

Researchers do not observe the world from a perfectly neutral position.

Concepts, disciplinary assumptions, methodological traditions, and prior scholarship influence what researchers regard as a meaningful problem, what they notice, what they ask, and how they interpret evidence.

Qualitative methodological scholarship sometimes describes knowledge as theory-laden for precisely this reason. Recent research on experts' views of theory in qualitative inquiry likewise emphasizes that theory can enter and leave at different stages of the research process and that its influence should be described explicitly.

This creates an important distinction:

No named formal theory The study is not explicitly organized around an established theory such as a particular behavioral, learning, organizational, or social theory.
No intellectual grounding The researcher cannot adequately explain why the concepts, questions, methods, categories, or interpretations used in the study make scholarly sense.

The first can be defensible. The second is much harder to defend.

A conceptual framework can provide coherence without pretending to be a theory

Suppose several bodies of literature identify concepts relevant to your problem, but no single formal theory integrates them.

You might construct a conceptual framework showing how those ideas organize the inquiry. The framework could identify relevant domains, assumptions, contextual influences, or tentative relationships without claiming that an established theory already explains them.

This approach can be particularly appropriate for interdisciplinary and emerging research problems.

However, a conceptual framework is not a license to draw whatever seems plausible. Its components should be justified through scholarship, evidence, methodology, or explicit reasoning. A list of variables and an attractive diagram do not by themselves provide conceptual coherence.

Your methodology may provide substantial intellectual structure

Research methodologies carry assumptions about what constitutes knowledge, what kind of evidence is relevant, and how researchers should move from evidence toward claims.

Phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory, case study, narrative inquiry, and other traditions are not interchangeable data-collection techniques. Their methodological commitments influence what researchers ask and how they interpret evidence.

That methodological grounding should not automatically be renamed a theoretical framework. Still, it demonstrates why a study can possess substantial intellectual structure without adopting an external formal theory as its central explanatory lens.

A study without formal theory can still contribute to theory

Research does not need to begin with one formal theory to become theoretically consequential.

A descriptive study may reveal a pattern that existing theories later need to explain. An exploratory qualitative study may identify a process not represented adequately in existing theory. A study may expose concepts that eventually support theoretical development.

Theory can therefore be an outcome or later interpretive resource rather than only a starting point.

This does not mean every novel finding constitutes theory building. Developing a theoretical explanation requires more than identifying themes or drawing relationships. Researchers should distinguish carefully among applying, testing, extending, and building theory.

A formal theory should not be added simply to make the study look scholarly

There is an understandable temptation to select a familiar theory because a proposal without one seems intellectually exposed.

This can produce what might be called ceremonial theorizing: several pages explaining a theory that has little relationship with the research questions, methods, analysis, or interpretation.

The theory is present, but it is not doing anything.

That is not necessarily stronger than a study that openly explains its conceptual foundation without claiming allegiance to a formal theory.

Watch Out

Do not mistake the presence of a theory section for theoretical strength. If removing the named theory would change nothing about the research questions, evidence collected, analysis, or interpretation, its role may be largely decorative.

Sometimes the absence of a fitting theory is itself informative

You may discover that no existing theory adequately explains the research problem.

That conclusion should come after a serious theoretical search, not before one. Relevant explanations may exist under different terminology or in neighboring disciplines.

If a broad search still reveals substantial theoretical limitations, the study may use multiple perspectives, construct a conceptual framework, extend an existing theory, or pursue theory-building work.

The appropriate response when no existing theory fits the research problem is not to select the least unsuitable theory simply to fill a section.

Institutional and publication requirements can override methodological preference

A university may require every thesis or dissertation to contain a section labeled “Theoretical Framework.” A supervisor may expect one. A journal in your discipline may strongly favor explicit theoretical positioning.

Those requirements matter.

Methodological arguments about whether formal theory is universally necessary do not exempt a thesis from the regulations under which it will be examined.

Check what your institution actually means by “theoretical framework.” Some programs use the term broadly enough to encompass conceptual framing, while others specifically require an established theory. If a formal theory is mandatory, choose one that genuinely contributes to the study rather than treating compliance as permission to force an inappropriate theory into the research.

04 · A Practical Example

What Strong Research Without a Named Theory Can Look Like

Hypothetical Example

Mapping how faculty members currently use generative AI

A research team wants to document how university faculty members use generative AI across teaching activities. The study asks which tools are used, for what purposes, how frequently, and under what institutional conditions. It does not attempt to explain why individual faculty members adopt the technology.

Ground the concepts The researchers review empirical and policy literature to define generative AI use and identify meaningful categories of teaching activity.
Justify what is measured Survey domains are derived from previous research and documented academic practices rather than assembled according to convenience.
Use an appropriate design Sampling, measurement, and analysis are selected to answer the descriptive questions rather than to test relationships borrowed from an unrelated adoption theory.
Interpret within limits The researchers compare observed patterns with previous studies and relevant institutional contexts without claiming to explain the psychological mechanisms causing adoption.
Generate future questions Unexpected differences across institutions provide a basis for subsequent research investigating why those differences occur and which theories might explain them.

The study has no named explanatory theory, but it is not conceptually empty. Its concepts, measures, categories, methods, and interpretations all have a defensible scholarly basis.

Adding a famous technology-adoption theory would strengthen the study only if that theory helped answer the actual research questions. Otherwise, it would mainly increase the reference list's workload.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About Research Without Formal Theory

Misconception

No formal theory means the study is atheoretical

A study can be informed by concepts, literature, methodological traditions, assumptions, and theoretical ideas without organizing itself around one named formal theory. Researchers should still make those intellectual influences visible where they matter.

Misconception

Every rigorous study must name an established theory

The need for formal theory varies with research purpose, methodology, discipline, and reporting conventions. Formal theorizing may be especially valuable for explanatory questions, but some descriptive, exploratory, and applied studies can be rigorous without adopting one named theory.

Misconception

A literature review is automatically enough

Simply summarizing previous studies does not necessarily provide conceptual coherence. Researchers should connect relevant knowledge to the research questions, concepts, design decisions, and interpretation rather than treating the literature review as a warehouse of citations.

Misconception

A conceptual framework can contain anything you want

A researcher-developed framework still needs justification. Its concepts, boundaries, and proposed relationships should arise from defensible literature, evidence, methodology, contextual reasoning, or clearly stated assumptions.

Misconception

Adding any theory is safer than having none

An inappropriate theory can distort the research problem and encourage researchers to collect or interpret evidence according to constructs that do not fit. A transparent and well-grounded study without a formal theory can be more coherent than one built around a poorly matched framework.

If theory appears after data collection, the study was badly designed

Some methodologies deliberately allow theoretical engagement to intensify during analysis or interpretation. The key is to report when and how theory entered rather than retrospectively claiming that it guided decisions made before it was selected.

Ask What Provides Coherence If a Formal Theory Does Not

A simple decision framework

If your research question explicitly seeks explanation of mechanisms or relationships
Examine whether an established theory can provide a defensible explanatory structure before deciding to proceed without one.
If your study is primarily descriptive or mapping an emerging phenomenon
Prioritize well-defined concepts, relevant literature, appropriate classification, and methodological rigor rather than adding explanatory theory automatically.
If several bodies of knowledge inform the problem but no single theory organizes them adequately
Consider a clearly justified conceptual framework that represents the actual intellectual structure of the study.
If your methodology deliberately limits early theoretical specification
Explain how the study remains conceptually grounded and when existing theory will enter the research process.
If an institution or target journal explicitly requires formal theory
Follow the applicable requirement while selecting a theory whose role in the study can be defended.

Try removing the phrase “theoretical framework” from your proposal and asking a more demanding question: what makes the logic of this study coherent?

You should be able to explain why the problem matters, where the major concepts come from, why the questions follow from what is known, why the chosen evidence can answer them, and how interpretations will be constrained by the design and literature.

If you can do that convincingly, you have intellectual structure. Whether that structure also requires a named formal theory is the next question, not the first.

Before Proceeding Without a Named Formal Theory

Check the intellectual foundation of the study:
State what kind of question the study asks and whether it genuinely requires explanatory theory.
Search relevant and neighboring literatures before concluding that no useful formal theory applies.
Define the major concepts and explain their scholarly basis.
Connect prior literature explicitly to the research problem and questions rather than merely summarizing previous studies.
Explain the methodological or philosophical assumptions that materially shape the inquiry where relevant.
If using a conceptual framework, justify its components and relationships rather than treating the diagram as self-explanatory.
Make clear when theory enters later stages of an exploratory or iterative study.
Verify university, supervisor, funder, and target-journal requirements before deciding that a formal framework can be omitted.
Ask whether adding a formal theory would materially improve the questions, design, analysis, or interpretation rather than merely satisfy appearance.

Questions About Conducting Research Without Formal Theory

Can a thesis be written without a theoretical framework?

Methodologically, some studies may not require a formal theoretical framework. Institutionally, your thesis program may still require one. Check the handbook and supervisory expectations because a local reporting requirement can apply even when no universal methodological rule does.

Does research without a formal theory lack academic rigor?

Not automatically. Rigour depends on the quality of the research problem, conceptual grounding, design, evidence, analysis, transparency, and claims. A formal theory can strengthen these elements when it fits, but its mere presence does not guarantee them.

Can I use a conceptual framework without a formal theory?

Potentially. A conceptual framework can synthesize relevant concepts, literature, contextual knowledge, and assumptions without being organized around one established theory. Its components still require a defensible scholarly basis.

Is all research ultimately theory-based?

That depends partly on what is meant by theory. Some scholars argue that observation and knowledge are inevitably theory-laden because researchers work through prior concepts and assumptions. That philosophical position is different from saying every empirical study must name and apply one formal theory.

Can quantitative research be conducted without a formal theory?

Yes, depending on its purpose. A descriptive quantitative study, for example, may estimate prevalence or characterize a population without testing an explanatory theory. Quantitative studies making explanatory or predictive claims should nevertheless provide a defensible rationale for the relationships they investigate.

Can qualitative research be conducted without naming a theory?

Yes, in some methodological traditions and research purposes, although qualitative scholars disagree about how explicitly theory should be articulated. Researchers should make their conceptual and methodological positioning sufficiently clear and explain how prior theory influenced the inquiry where relevant.

Does not using a theory mean I can create my own framework?

You can develop a conceptual framework when justified, but it should not be an arbitrary collection of preferred variables or concepts. Explain where each component comes from, why it belongs, and what relationships or boundaries the framework proposes.

What if my supervisor insists that every study needs a theory?

Clarify what your program means by “theory” and what the formal requirements are. If a theoretical framework is required, meet that requirement. You can still choose a framework whose function fits the research rather than selecting a theory solely because it is familiar.

The Bottom Line

A strong study does not always need to organize itself around a named formal theory, but it does need a coherent and defensible intellectual foundation for its questions, concepts, methods, and interpretations.

Use formal theory when it genuinely improves explanation or guides the inquiry. When it does not, make the study's conceptual grounding explicit through relevant literature, well-defined concepts, methodological reasoning, or an appropriate conceptual framework. Omitting theory should be a reasoned decision, not a shortcut, just as adding theory should not be a ceremonial one.
